LABOR of LOVE Volume 28, No. 4 September 2007 NQA Chapter # OK544 From the President’s Desk Here we go again, with another wonderful program. Ruth Powers was just great. All those beautiful quilts and her choice of colors were fantastic. I was also able to attend her workshop on Friday and was grateful for all the help and hints she gave us. You think I could design my own Paducah winner? Hehe. Please mark your calendars for next month’s meeting and workshop. We want to know what kind of programs you would like to have next year, June 2008 to May 2009. Please put your suggestions in the Birdhouses so that we can start looking for lecturers. As most of you are tired of hearing about, we are still in need of several positions, President Elect, Programs Elect, and a Day Heritage person. Please consider helping in one of these areas. My little birdie has been at it again, someone left a lovely sweater at the morning meeting. Please come and claim it, it is my color and my size so hurry up, I need it for a hot date. Birdie is also looking for a cute little lady that borrowed Charlotte Hickman’s sweater at the Quilt Show while we were setting up. Charlotte would like to have this precious item back. Don’t forget the Events of Interest in this Labor of Love. See you at one of the Quilt Shows and at the Fair. Have a wonderful month, I will turn down the temperature for a beautiful fall. -Joyce Thorp Central Oklahoma Quilters Guild Board & Committees President: Joyce Thorp Pres. The evening meeting had 87 members and 5 visitors. I want to apologize to the Quilting Post in Perkins for getting the name of your store wrong during door prize time. I seemed to have a brain fog and just couldn’t get it right. Thank you for the generous way you support the guild. See you next month. Library Mary Lu Kaiser I have been enjoying the summer but getting little done. My granddaughter from Iowa was here for six weeks. We sewed quilts, she took a quilt class, played dolls and planned doll clothes. She even wants a big full skirt with crinolines like they have in the movie Hairspray. She wants me to be busy always. I, of course, got sick the minute she left and one thing has gone into another for the last six weeks. Now, I will concentrate on the new books, old books, and all the other things I would like to do. Thank you to those of you who volunteered to help me with the library. I really do appreciate your assistance. I did get three volunteers for both evening and morning so I should be set. C&T Publishing has presented a 20th anniversary collection of blocks, tips, and stories from Quilting's Best authors and designers. The articles are great, the pictures fantastic, and you will really enjoy this book, Celebrate the Tradition. I will try to put together a display of all the new books we have purchased as well as the ones that have been donated. Look forward to checking them all out at the next meeting. COQG September 2007 Day Vice President Revonda Blanding We have had a full and wonderful month! Our oldest grandson got married Aug. 4th to a sweet young lady and we enjoyed our relatives who came from out-of-state. Our August 23rd meeting was great with our guest speaker, Ruth Powers, from Carbondale, Ks. (My home state!) Everyone was so attentive during the whole meeting! It was so good to be able to hear and to see all of the beautiful quilts Ruth brought. It is hard to imagine anyone could make so many quilts and design all of those patterns, too. What a challenge to us and she was so inspiring. Thanks to the many ladies who helped with holding the quilts during "Show and Share" and also for our program. It sure gave us all a workout! The Friday class was fun and CHALLENGING. Just wish I could of had more time. Hopefully, we will all get our quilts finished someday. Our program director is one organized, talented and helpful lady. Thank you, GeorgeAnne! Looking forward to seeing lots of you girls and guys at the Oklahoma State Fair on Friday, Sept. 21st when we will be demonstrating our "quilting skills." It's a good time to get to know all the ladies better and fun, too! Remember our regular meeting September 27th and bring a friend. We will be leaving August 29th for Hawaii to celebrate our 52nd anniversary on Aug.31st. We will return Sept. 15th. We are so anxious!! I'm sure you all think I'm not old enough to be married that long. Another joke!!!! Blessing to you and yours. Aloha Ways and Means Gwen Latham Hello, we all love to shop where the price is right and they have just what we are looking for. We know it is what we are looking for because it comes from our sister quilters. A great big thanks for all the wonderful donations ...with out them we would not have a ways and means to shop for our favorite things. This book, Oklahoma Heritage Quilts, written by Pam Woolbright, was a one time publication and sale. Seven of these books were found in a garage by a former member. Evelyn Day now has these books and we are offering them for sale. We have seen sale prices on Amazon and Ebay that range from $69.95 to $148.00 plus shipping. Therefore, we have set a price of $80.00 per book which includes shipping. The way to purchase one of these books is to be one of the first seven people to send a check to COQG, C/O Evelyn Day PO Box 50353 Midwest City, OK, 73140 She will process the first seven checks received, send the books to those lucky folks, and will return the other checks to the senders. COQG September 2007 Are you headed to Houston?? If you plan on stopping by, they have requested that you call ahead at 1-936-756-7200. Their shop is located at 3401-E West Davis, 30 miles south of Huntsville, and 40 miles north of Houston, just off of 1-45. Be sure to check out their ad in this newsletter for a free coupon! Page 3 Program and Workshop for September September 27th Program: Dixie Webb Japonisme and the Crazy Quilt: Parallels between 18th-century Japanese prints and 19th-century American Crazy Quilts. The origins of crazy quilts have been the speculation of quilters and quilt historians for decades. We know today that these lavish quilts were not due to the quilters' unbalanced, or 'crazy' state of mind. One source for their creation has been the influence of Japanese art via the display of Japanese art at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. While Japonisme, the influence of Japanese art on Western art, may sound like and odd influence for quilting the phenomenon it had a profound influence on many American and European visual artists. By examining the work of 19th-century artist like Mary Cassatt, James Abbott McNeill Whistler, and Vincent Van Gogh, quilters today can see how 18th-century Japanese art, especially ceramics and color woodblock prints, could also influence the asymmetrical design and fractured patterning of the late 19th-century American Crazy Quilts. Workshop Registration Please enroll me in the following classes: Class Name/Date Cost Program and Workshop for September September 28th Workshop: Cathy Miller Hexagons Out of the Garden Start with the Grandmother's Flower Garden and then transplant it to new growing zones using the English paper piecing technique. When he got to heaven, God was showing him around. They came to a modest little house with a faded Longhorn flag in the window. "This house is yours for eternity, Mack," said God. "This is very special; not everyone gets a house up here." Mack felt special, indeed, and walked up to his house. On his way up to the porch, he noticed another house just around the corner. It was a three-story mansion with a Crimson and Cream sidewalk, a 50foot tall flagpole with an enormous OU Sooner flag, and in every window, he could see Sooner fans. Mack looked at God and said, "God, I'm not trying to be ungrateful, but I have a question. I was a good coach, I went to 7 consecutive bowl games, won a national championship, and turned around the Texas program." God said, "So what do you want to know, Mack?" "Well, why does Bob Stoops get a better house than me?" God chuckled and said, "Mack, that's not Bob's house; that's mine." Sew together a long tube of fabric that is at least as long as the width of your quilt, and add several fabric loops to its edge. When your quilt is finished, it can be rolled up, put in its sleeve and easily hung on a wooden dowel. Hanging it also helps to prevent any creases from being squished in.
