2014 Annual Report - Fieldstone Farm Therapeutic Riding Center
2014 ANNUAL REPORT A HORSE CAN CHANGE A LIFE Photo by Second Story Productions Our horses help people overcome the challenges of living with a disability or special need. Weakness becomes strength. Frustration turns into motivation. Sadness changes to hope. And uncertainty grows into confidence. It is the intuitive power of our horses that transforms the lives of everyone who enters our doors. Dear Friends, Photo and front cover photo by Creed Woodka Like any strong organization, we always look for ways to improve and, in our case, to engage with a broader base of needs in our community. In 2014, we doubled the number of veteran participants and have added new programs specific to their needs. We are proud to have served 110 veterans this past year. This increase has also allowed us to conduct veterans-related research that has helped us to improve future programming. Donny first came to Fieldstone Farm as part of an Ohio Military Kids retreat. His father has been stationed abroad several times recently. He loved the horses so much that he now comes for lessons on Fridays, and volunteers on Saturdays. On the cover, Donny gives Jackson, his favorite horse, a big hug. Our Board of Trustees also looked for ways to better connect the boardroom to the barn. This past fall, several trustees spent time in the barn volunteering to simulate some of the conditions that our participants deal with, while others served as their assistants and volunteer helpers. This “hands-on” experience was enlightening as many of the trustees are not from the equine world. It heightened their respect for our students, their families, the horses, our volunteers and the staff, which will enable the trustees to better serve in their roles in the future as the governing body of our program. You, too, are a key part of our ability to serve our students in the most impactful manner possible. Great support was surely felt as a 600-person sellout crowd attended our fourth annual Chefs Unbridled event in September. While the real victory was netting nearly $200,000 for Fieldstone Farm, the event garnered the honor of being a Black Tie Award winner, which means it is one of Northeast Ohio’s top 15 benefits of the year as recognized by Currents magazine. Looking toward the future, our endowment campaign remains a high priority as we work to sustain Fieldstone Farm in the years to come. We are nearing 90 percent of our $3 million goal. For your past, ongoing and future involvement and spirit that lifts this organization to new heights each year, we are deeply appreciative! Sincerely, Allen Wiant President, Board of Trustees 2014 AR | 1 Photo by Tammie Packer “Being around horses and the farm transformed our students. They had a different energy. They were respectful and gentle with the horses and so proud of learning to ride.” – Amy Btiebet, Open Doors Academy Our partnership with Open Doors Academy continues to grow. This summer they will bring 40 students from the inner-city to interact and learn from our therapy horses. Their experiences with horses help the 2 | 2014 AR Photo by Tammie Packer teens build confidence, trust, respect and so much more. They provide a vital service to the community. I’m deeply moved when I see how they recognize the incredible achievements of these kids, achievements they thought they would never see.” – Ann Newman, Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Northeastern Ohio, Inc. They helped me get through so much.” – James, a student at Gaitway High School When James started at our alternative high school, Gaitway, three years ago he did not want to talk to anyone. But through the empathetic ears of our horses, he began to trust again. They understood him even though they could not speak. And when James was mad or sad, they comforted him. One horse helped him find amazing joy when he won first place in our horse show. “It was so awesome. I thought, I just did this!” he recalls with a big smile.
