The Key School is founded upon the conviction that children are innately curious about themselves and the world;
they want to learn, they want to discover, and they want to create. The School’s role is to nourish and guide this natural
exuberance, energy, and delight in the search for meaning, so that each student may develop into an informed, thoughtful,
and constructive member of society, with a lifelong commitment to learning.
—From The Key School Mission Statement
deceased
Engaging
Minds
For 50 years, The Key School community has worked to bring
students, teachers and parents together to fulfill the Mission
of the School by fostering a program where engaging minds
and inspiring ideas is fundamental to its very core.
and
Inspiring Ideas
In this special Annual Report, in addition to expressing our
gratitude to those whose generosity has helped the School
to grow and thrive, we stop to contemplate the words of
Key School alumni whose thoughts and reflections summarize that which they hold most dear about their experiences
at The Key School. We honor and thank those whose legacy
paints an awe-inspiring picture of the importance of their
Key School education. Together these words from alumni of
a variety of decades, backgrounds and life experiences tell
the story of their belief in the Mission of Key School.
What could be a better testimony to the wisdom and vision
of the founders of Key School? There is no doubt that Key
provides a strong foundation from which students go out
into the world as informed, thoughtful and constructive
members of society, with a lifelong commitment to learning.

Life is to be lived in the present—fully, creatively, passionately—says a popular adage. We have witnessed admirable examples of such zestful living, amply seasoned with
creativity, passion and engagement during this past school
year. Not to chronicle student and faculty highlights, as
we place the final punctuation point on 2007-2008, would
be an oversight. Hence, I devote this all too brief précis
to noteworthy moments of the year we have just lived,
emblematic as they are of Key’s programmatic richness and
of its Mission-fueled values and priorities.
Two faculty presentations, highlighting Key signature
programs (The CHUMS school partnership and the
Fourth Grade Islamic Studies unit), delivered to packed
conference halls, filled with AIMS colleagues, avid to hear
about Key’s global perspectives initiatives and to learn
from our teachers’ expertise.

of geography, literature, history, and politics, and which
enabled the students to make their learning “visible”
through portfolios and public exhibits. Fascinating was
a student’s account of his father’s flight from Nasser’s
oppressive regime, as was the inspirational exchange between students and organizers of beleaguered Mexican
migrant workers.
P oignancy abounded as educator/guest speaker Rodney
Glasgow told his life story, thereby facilitating an Upper
School student/faculty discussion on issues of race, class
and other differences. Equally moving was the Parents’
Association’s sponsoring of the film God Grew Tired of
Us, providing a moving cinematographic depiction of
young Sudanese victims of multi-decade tribal conflicts.
The presence that evening of two such victims, with
their horrifying testimonies of the hardships they had
endured, captivated the audience of young and old.

to their fans throughout the winter months and brought to
Key the coveted MIAA League Championship.
A
student led exchange with architects designing the
upcoming Barn renovation, in which the students’ extensive
research into “green” practices and construction methods (inclusive of cost/benefit analyses) gave impetus to
architects to incorporate many of these suggestions into
their plans, and to praise the students’ passion and depth of
commitment to environmental stewardship.
A
first time service learning trip to Belize, undertaken by
globally committed Key citizen/students, whose sweat
and brawn enabled a small village to add walkways to the
mud-filled paths children traverse en route to school, and
to begin a rehabilitation project within their modest school
house.
A
workshop sponsored by Key’s Learning Department and
led by Dr. Gerard Gioia, Division Chief of Pediatric Neuropsychology at the Children’s National Medical Center,
continuing our faculty’s examination of emerging research
on children’s brain development and on its implications for
teaching and learning.
Visually arresting theatrical productions—Arabian Nights,
Once on this Island, and Shining Princess of the Slender Bamboo—whose exotic themes informed and entertained. And
musically sophisticated culminating performances in every
division, one of which highlighted Key’s Orfeo Alliance partnership with the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, brought
its distinguished maestro to campus as artist in residence,
and promoted lively Iberian repertoire, thanks to exquisite
interpretation from Key’s dancers and singers.

rduous preparations in advance of Key’s 50th anniversary
in 2008-2009, a year in which we hope to continue “Inspiring Ideas and Engaging Minds.”
Needless to say, the notable items that could further define
2007-2008 are unending; but space constraints impose measure and discipline. Suffice it to say in closing that we have
lived life fully throughout this last academic cycle and, in so
doing, we have perpetuated our ideals: fostering a commit-

To all those supporters of The Key School who have given
of their volunteer time or financial resources to make us the
School we are and the one we so cherish, I express heartfelt
thanks. You have served as excellent stewards of the vision we
inherited from our founders, and provided us with the means
to perpetuate and transmit Key School’s essential values.

Planned gifts are increasingly important to the life and long-term financial security of Key. The funds generated from these gifts
will help to shape Key’s academic programs, attract and retain the best and brightest teachers, enable interesting and motivated
students to attend Key, and assist with the campus up-keep and renovations which are so vital to the School.
The School recognizes the following members of the Legacy Society who have established planned gifts naming The Key School
as a charitable beneficiary. These planned gifts will help to ensure the future stability of the School and will guide Key as it
moves toward successfully achieving its Long-Range Plan.

Board of Trustees
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am pleased to
report on our activities and successes for the 2007-2008
school year.
First and foremost, we are delighted to be able to report
that the School ended the year within the financial targets established for our $13 million budget. We achieved
our internal goals by meeting our student enrollment targets, exhibiting consistent fiscal stewardship throughout
the year, and succeeding at our philanthropic objectives.
The School continues to offer a very strong educational
program that is grounded in excellence and core values.
In June, we graduated our largest class ever from the
School. A substantial majority of the students in this class
of 58 students gained admission to their first or second
choice for post-secondary studies, despite a very challenging and competitive environment for college admissions. We are very proud of their accomplishments!
T h e
Our Annual Fund raised $450,000 this year, an amount that
represented the hard work of many volunteers in the School’s
advancement program. We are very thankful for the generosity of
so many individuals and families within our Key community.
Our Endowment has grown to $4,399,633 as of June 30, 2008,
and we have more than $970,000 in pledges to be paid over the
next several years. Starting with a meager $300,000 only seven
years ago, we believe that our Endowment is one of the fastest
growing capital funds in the independent school world. We need
to continue to build on this success so that future generations
can benefit from the generosity of those who are members of
our current community.
Our most significant building project this year was the planning of the barn renovation which serves both the Middle and
Upper Schools. Thanks to the strong leadership of Building and
Grounds Committee Chairman Steve Rabbitt, the board has
now approved this project and we broke ground in June. The
renovation of the existing structure and the construction of
additional space will cost $5 million, with completion expected
early in 2010. Through a very comprehensive planning process
involving all of the users of this building, we are going to be
able to increase the size of the Barn facility by more than 10,000
square feet, providing a number of opportunities and options
for the students, faculty and administrators within the Middle
and Upper Schools.
Last spring, the board honored retiring Trustee Larry Harding for
his seven years of service to the School. His knowledge and guidance were invaluable to Key and I send my sincere thanks to him
for the time and attention he so graciously gave to the board.
Our board is growing to 26 individuals this year, with the addition of three new trustees. In addition to Joe Janney and Pam
Williams, one of our new trustees is actually a returning board
K e y

member. Trustee Emerita Georgie Berkinshaw is re-joining the
board after a year’s absence. This will be Georgie’s 18th year of
service as a Trustee and we are so honored to have her many
years of experience and wisdom on the board. What an accomplishment and a commitment to Key. Thank you, Georgie!
Let me conclude by expressing my appreciation to everyone
within the Key community for the many contributions of time,
talent, and treasure that each individual and family continue to
provide to the School. From our faculty and staff, to our parents,
our students and our graduates, we are all fortunate to be members of such a strong and active community. Many Thanks!

Endowment Giving
July 2004-June 2008
The entire Key School community would like to thank the many donors who have supported Key’s efforts to strengthen
the Endowment, one of Key’s highest fundraising priorities. The School has received over $3 million dollars through major
donations, Senior Parents’ and Grandparents’ Gifts made in honor of graduating classes, Founders’ Walk bricks, and named
funds in support of Faculty Compensation, Professional Development, Teaching and Learning, Facilities, and Financial Aid.
As we look to the future, a strengthened Endowment will help ensure Key’s financial position for years to come. We have
much to celebrate in our 50th Anniversary year!

I would not be a physician but for Key. The
academic tools acquired there, particularly in science

Advancement
Throughout its fifty-year history, The Key School has seen
dramatic change. Now the largest nonsectarian independent school in Anne Arundel County, Key enrolls 700 students and has a faculty and staff roster of 150. Key’s fifteen
acre campus now boasts fifteen buildings, with renovations
and new construction that meld a home-like environment
with contemporary technology. The School’s operating
budget of $13 million, coupled with an Annual Fund of
$450,000 and an Endowment of over $4 million, further
represent Key’s growth.
Over the past few years, a group of dedicated volunteers has
been quietly raising funds for Key’s Endowment. The show of
confidence in the School, exhibited by our community’s support of recent fundraising efforts, has been highly gratifying.
Many parents, faculty and staff members, alumni, grandparents, and friends have made Key their philanthropic priority.
In 2007-2008, $450,000 was raised from Key’s generous community for the School’s Annual Fund. In addition, $30,000
was raised for the Endowment from the Parents’ Associations’
cornerstone event, the Annapolis Book Festival, and close to
$30,000 from the Senior Parents’ and Grandparents’ Gift to
the School honoring the class of 2008.
We are very pleased to announce two new named funds for
the Endowment in honor of longstanding members of the
Key community, who recently retired. The Mary Jane Milner
Environmental Stewardship Fund, named in honor of Mrs.
Milner, Lower School Division head for 32 years, will support
and enhance the health and beauty of Key’s campus that offers such rich opportunities for outdoor learning. The Whitall
Clevenger 1st Grade Scholar Fund will offer financial aid to
a deserving student. Mrs. Clevenger retired after 29 years of
teaching at The Key School.

Finance and Operations
The Barn Project consumed much of the attention of the
Finance Committee this year. The two main topics under
review included:
The Barn Project budget: The Board of Trustees approved a
budget of $5,380, 000 for this Project.
The Barn Project Financing plan: A sub-committee consisting of Jim Praley, Jack Fusco, Peter Biché, Niels Holch and
Mike Damas along with Ken Piel and Marcella Yedid held a
series of meetings to determine the specific debt vehicle.
The sub-committee decided to seek a Variable Rate Swap,
and the proposal submitted by M & T Bank was accepted.
•
•
The $9.3 million bond package will be finalized in the fall. The
proceeds of the Bonds will be used as follows:
Approximately $4.1 million will be used to refinance the
existing bond debt covering previous campus improvements
(Library/Science Building and the Manse renovation) and the
remainder will fund the Barn Renovation Project.
Careful oversight by the Finance Committee enabled Key
School to achieve a balanced budget. The Audit Review
Committee, chaired by Marie Brockhurst, provided thoughtful
analysis of new audit guidelines.

The Buildings and Grounds Committee, co-chaired by Steve
Rabbitt and Wes Jones, oversaw a PPRRSM (Provision for
Repair, Replacement and Special Maintenance) budget in
excess of $400,000 during the 2007-08 school year. Completed PPRRSM projects included, but were not limited to, the
replacement of the Smith House well pump, interior/exterior
updating of the two Dove Lane rental houses, the installation
of a new climbing toy adjacent to the Manse, updating fire
alarm panels, installing security hardware on building exterior
doors, replacement of a Pre-School sidewalk and re-configuration of the Upper School office.
A sub-committee of the Buildings and Grounds Committee, the Grounds Planning Committee, chaired by Wes Jones
brought the Key School Landscape Master Plan to completion.
Approved projects were prioritized and costs were estimated
in order to begin the budget planning phase.
Steve and Wes also coordinated the student/faculty/staff Barn
Planning Committee. Input from these groups was gathered,
discussed and shared with the Buildings and Grounds Committee and the Barn architect, Leo Wilson.
Steve Rabbitt guided the search to select the Barn architect
and construction company. Requests for proposals were
sent to several architecture firms and contractors. The
Buildings and Grounds Committee analyzed the proposals
and garnered Board approval for selection of Leo Wilson of
Hammond-Wilson as architect and Gardiner & Gardiner as
contractor.

“
I can’t think of a single story that could express how important Key School was to
me. I think The Key School experience was a feeling that everyone, no matter who,
was an accepted and integral part of the School. Key School let us, even encouraged us, to be individuals. That’s what I remember and cherish the most.

Annual Fund Volunteers
This year’s Annual Fund success would not have been possible without an exceptional group of volunteers whose
commitment was seen and felt by parents, grandparents, teachers, staff members, alumni, and friends alike. Through oneon-one conversations, hundreds of phone calls during phonathons, and stacks of hand-written notes, these volunteers
helped to “tell the story” of the importance of the Annual Fund and the need for support from all corners of The Key School
community. Many thanks to all of the following enthusiastic and loyal volunteers:

Compared to Key, classes at Stanford were a breeze. Seriously. And college will be for you, too.

Class of 2008 Gift to the School
In keeping with Key’s effort to make environmentally sustainable decisions whenever possible, the Class of 2008
has purchased a solar panel to power the golf cart used by our Facilities and Athletic departments. Previously
powered by batteries that required charging each night, the solar powered cart will continually charge throughout
the day. In addition to its myriad of daily uses on campus, the cart will also be used by various classes as a teaching
tool about alternative energy sources. Also, the Class of 2008 has made a gift toward the creation of a miniamphitheater where an engraved stone bearing their class year will be placed in recognition of their support.
In addition, the Class of 2008 adorned the Arts Building with their interpretation of “Where the Wild Things Are”
under the direction of the Art faculty. Our newest mural joins those inspired by The Giving Tree, Dr. Seuss, Alice in
Wonderland, and other whimsical tales.
“

saw others face concerning public speaking, in college and
grad school, was one I had already dealt with at Key.

I think about the hours I put into that School along with my class-

us want to spend our weekends building sets with John Devine or Chip

Annual Fund Donors by Club Level
Each year, The Annual Fund generates needed income through charitable gifts from all corners
of The Key School community. These gifts support the current operating budget of the School
and enhance the day-to-day life of every student and faculty member. Annual Fund monies are
raised and spent in the same fiscal year.
year to the Annual Fund provided $628 per student to cover the budgeted expenses of the
School. The Annual Fund is critical to Key’s annual operating budget. 70 cents of every dollar
raised supports faculty and staff salaries and benefits. The other 30 cents provides support for
academic programs and campus facilities.
Contributions to the Annual Fund provide necessary funding to support the School’s
exceptional academic programs, as well as co-curricular programs such as fine and performing
arts, athletics, and outdoor education. In addition, the fund allows teachers access to
professional development opportunities and supports the technology, equipment, and
supplies needed in classrooms, labs, and libraries throughout the entire School. Gifts last
Key’s Annual Fund has made steady growth over the last few years thanks to increased gifts
and participation from parents, alumni, grandparents, past parents, faculty and staff, current
and past Trustees, and friends. Your gifts truly make a difference to each and every student!

Grandparents with Key Grandchildren
Grandparents are a vital and important part of The Key School community giving of their time and resources to advance the
Mission of the School. Although the official Grandparents’ Day is held every other year, the School welcomes the interest and

Parents of Alumni
Many Parents of Alumni continue their generosity towards Key even after their student moves on from Key to college and
beyond. This is particularly meaningful because of the confidence it shows from those who know the School best and
understand the importance of a Key School education.

Faculty and Staff Donors
Over and above the dedication that faculty and staff show each day in the classroom, on the playing fields, and throughout the School, the
following faculty and staff have also supported Key with their generous gifts to the Annual Fund, the Endowment, the Annapolis Book Festival,
and Key’s other fundraising efforts. The students, parents, grandparents, and fellow faculty and staff are grateful for their commitment to
ensuring that the day-to-day financial needs of the School are supported.

Ways of Giving to The Key School
When considering a gift to Key, there are many opportunities that will not only support the excellence of the
School’s outstanding programs, but may also provide a tax-deductible contribution to the donor.
Cash Contributions
Unrestricted gifts of cash are the
most popular and easiest way to
support Key School. The School
accepts gifts of cash including
payment by Visa, MasterCard, and
American Express. Checks should
be made payable to The Key School.
Installment Payments
Using EFT
A pledge can be paid by spreading
the payments over several months
(specified by the donor) through
electronic funds transfer which
automatically debits your checking
account on a specified date each
month. Please contact the Advancement Office for more details on
how to get started on this troublefree method of giving.
Matching Gifts
The impact of a contribution can
be greatly increased by a matching
employer gift. When considering a donation, consult with your
employer, and, if applicable, forward
the completed matching gift form
to the Advancement Office with
your contribution. A matching gift
can dramatically increase your support for the School.
Stocks and Securities
Gifts of stocks or securities benefit
the donor and the School. This
type of gift is a tax-deductible
contribution and the donor may
avoid paying capital gains tax on
the appreciated stock or security.
Your broker and the Advancement
Office can provide information and
assistance.
Deferred or Planned Gifts
Gifts of real estate, tangible personal property, bequests, life insurance, and Charitable Trusts are of
great value to the School and may
provide many advantages to the
donor. Please contact your personal
financial advisors or the Advancement Office for information on
planned giving opportunities.
