WELCOME TO DIVINE MERCY CATHOLIC CHURCH
“REJOICE in the LORD
always! Present your needs
to GOD in every form of
prayer and in petitions full
of gratitude.”
3rd Sunday of
ADVENT
Dec. 16, 2012
~ Phil 4: 4 - 6
Message from our Pastor . . .
Rejoice!
Rejoice in the Lord Always!
Fr. Soane Kaniseli
T
oday is the Third Sunday of Advent. In the Liturgical Calendar of the Western Churches, Catholic,
Anglican, Lutheran and some Main Line Protestant Churches this Sunday is known as Gaudete
Sunday. The Latin word Gaudete is translated as Rejoice which is the first word in the introit for the
Mass of this Sunday. Gaudete Sunday can fall between the 11th and the 17th of December every year. All
Catholic Parishes are lighting the pink or rose Advent candle today to signify this joyful anticipation of the
coming of our Messiah, the King of the Universe.
The Gaudete theme may be translated into English as in the Letter of St. Paul to the Philippians (Phil. 4: 46): Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let all men know your forbearance. The Lord is at
hand. Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let
your requests be made known to God. Lord, you have blessed your land; you have turned away the captivity
of Jacob.
Prophet Zephaniah who minister to the people of Israel during their Exile in Babylon, gave the good news to
the people in bondage as we read in today’s first reading. For 182 years the people of Israel were in exile in
Babylon. You can imagine how much they need a message like what prophet Zephaniah gave them. We are
hearing today the same joyful message as we await the second coming of Christ. As prophet Zephaniah told
the Israelites: “The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a mighty Savior; He will rejoice over you with gladness,
and renew you in His love,” let us look forward for the coming of our Savior and say “God indeed is my
savior; I am confident and unafraid.”
A
s we prepare with joy for Christmas and to be ready for the second
coming of Christ, let us continue to listen to John the Baptist who is
giving us significant suggestions in today’s Gospel. God has sent John
to prepare the people for the coming of our Messiah, Jesus Christ and his
messages are still valuable today to help us get prepared for his second
coming. He is saying to all of us to have a look at our closets, to see if we have
access, and make a decision to share with those who have none; and to look
at our source of daily sustenance, to see if we have access to share with those
who have none. John also speaks to us who are working at offices and places
where we deal with people that are coming to pay taxes or file taxes, or pay
rents or bills or pay anything they owed. We need to watch that we are not charging people more than what
we are supposed to. And we must give people fair exchanges for the works they have done. John also speaks
to us who have authorities of all kinds that we must beware lest we misuse the authority and put burdens on
people unjustly.
John the Baptist preached good news to the people, as he prepared them for the coming of Christ. We are
blessed to have him preach to us today and prepare us also, so we may look forward with joy to the second
coming of Christ.

Big Thank You to Divine Mercy
Parishioners
The Divine Mercy Angels of Mercy Ministry to the Poor
would like to use this opportunity to say a BIG THANK
YOU to our Divine Mercy Parishioners for their generous
support and donations during the Thanksgiving Weekend
Food Drive for the poor in our community. Through your
support we collected over 60 bags of food and monetary
donations to help the poor in our community. Your support
during the Food Drive helped poor families in our
community to not go hungry at least for one day and is
appreciated by members of the Angels of Mercy and,
most importantly, by the families who benefited from your
donations. According
to
Matthew 25:40 “Whatever
you did for one of the least
of these brothers and
sisters of mine, you did for
Me”
We hope for your
continued support in the
future.
If interested in
providing additional financial
support for the poor in our
community, either by direct donation or joining the Divine
Mercy Angels of Mercy Ministry, please contact James
Ogbonna at (916) 419-3751.

that directs our hearts and minds to Christ’s
second coming at the end of time and also to
the anniversary of the Lord’s birth on
Christmas. The final days of Advent, from
December 17 to December 24, focus
particularly on our preparation for the

Devotion to Divine Mercy
Lost and

Acceptance and Sainthood
T
he formal beatification of Faustina involved the
case of Maureen Digan of Massachusetts. In
March 1981 Digan reported a healing, while praying
at
the tomb of Faustina. Digan had suffered from
Lymphedema (a disease which causes significant swelling due to fluid
retention) for decades, and had undergone 10 operations, including a leg
amputation. Digan reported that while praying at Faustina's tomb, she heard a
voice saying "ask for my help and I will help you" and her constant pain
stopped. After 2 days Digan reported that her shoe became too large for her
because her body stopped undue liquid retention. Upon her return to the
United States, five Boston area physicians stated that she was healed (with no
explanation), and the case was declared miraculous by the Vatican in 1992
based on the additional testimony of over twenty witnesses about her prior
condition.
F
austina was beatified on April 18, 1993 and canonized on April 30,
2000 - the first saint in the 21st century. Divine Mercy Sunday is
celebrated the Second Sunday of Easter (which is the first Sunday after
Easter). The fact that her Vatican biography directly quotes some of her
conversations with Jesus distinguishes her among the many reported visions
of Jesus and Mary. Author Benedict Groeschel considers a modest estimate
of the following Divine Mercy devotion in 2010 to be over one hundred
million Catholics
