Things Above from Fr. Bilot
As we embark on these final days
of preparation for Christmas, I would
like us to reflect if there is a gift we
hope to receive from the Lord as we
celebrate his birthday. To help us to
understand why the Lord desires to
bless us with a gift, I need to take us
back to the Book of Genesis and the
story of Adam and Eve. Why? Well,
the Church Fathers -- Clement of
Rome, Ignatius, Justin, Cyprian,
Augustine, Pope Leo the Great and others -- lived prior to
the seventh century. These wise men made a connection
between Eve (who we believe was the mother of all the
living) and our Blessed Mother, Mary, who became the
“new Eve,” and who undid the damage done by Eve and
Original Sin.
Bishop Robert Barron puts my thoughts into perfect
context. He wrote, “Our first parents, Genesis tells us, were
given a garden in which to flourish. They were given free
rein, permission to enjoy and eat of any tree in the Garden,
save one – the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
Why the prohibition? Because the very best things are not
taken; they are received as gifts. God did not block their
access to the tree because he wanted to prevent them from
having what he had; he blocked access because he wanted
to give them gifts!”
It seems that in today's society, though we receive gifts
from others, but it seems as if they are owed to us, we are
entitled to them, they are “taken.” Take a moment to reflect
on this: how often do we expect a gift from someone
because it is the norm, the expectation, at this time of year?
I believe this way of thinking is the mentality of “taking”
instead of “receiving.” How can we receive a gift from the
Lord if we are thinking it is owed to us or we are taking what
isn’t rightfully ours to ask for?
This Friday, we will celebrate the best gift ever given,
the gift of God becoming man: Jesus Christ. God asked
Mary to be the bearer of the Christ Child. She said YES
and she received the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and bore
a son. God asks us this Christmas, in a particular way, to
be a disciple of his Son, his beloved. If we say yes, we will
receive the wonderful gift of his Son, the Christ Child. Now
that will be quite the gift! In pondering and opening our
hearts to God, we will receive the Divine Child in a most
beautiful way. How that unfolds...is the gift!

Prepare For Christmas...With A Nativity Scene!
Over the years, Christmas decorations (those
both inside and outside the home) have really
evolved. Decorations are bigger, brighter, and
louder than ever before. With this said, no
decoration leaves a bigger impact on a person than
a nativity/manger scene.
Even the most
elaborately decorated homes leaves something to
be desired if they are missing a nativity scene.
While fancy decorated homes might catch one's attention
momentarily, a simple nativity scene actually speaks to a person and it
leaves a lasting impression. Even if the nativity scene was standing
next to Clark W. Griswold's house, the nativity would still leave a
deeper impact on the onlooker (if you didn't get this movie reference, I
apologize). Needless to say, everyone needs a nativity in their home!
Below is a blessing you can use this year for your nativity scene:
(The blessing of the Christmas manger or nativity scene may take
place on the Vigil of Christmas or at another suitable time.)
When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in
her womb and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cried out
in a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and
blessed is the fruit of your womb.” -Lk 1:41-42
(When the manger is set up in the home, it is appropriate that it be
blessed by a parent or another family member.)
All make the sign of the cross as the leader says:
Our help is in the name of the Lord.
Everyone replies: Who made heaven and earth.
One of those present or the leader reads a text of sacred Scripture, for
example, Luke 2:1 (lines 1-8) or Isaiah 7:10 (lines 10-15, the birth of
Emmanuel).
Reader: The Gospel of the Lord.
Everyone replies: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
The leader prays with hands joined:
God of every nation and people,
from the very beginning of creation
you have made manifest your love:
when our need for a Savior was great
you sent your Son to be born of the Virgin Mary.
To our lives he brings joy and peace,
justice, mercy, and love.
Lord, bless all who look upon this manger;
may it remind us of the humble birth of Jesus,
and raise our thoughts to him,
who is God-with-us and Savior of all,
and who lives and reigns forever and ever.

Fr. John’s Traveling Chalice
What is this?
The Traveling Chalice is a way to involve parish
households to pray for vocations.
How does it work?
Any DC family can sign it out, take it home for a
week and put it in a place of honor. Each day the
household will pray for an increase in vocations to the
priesthood and religious life. There are suggested
prayers that will be provided. The family may also
spend some time talking about the need for vocations,
ways to support our religious and ways to encourage
young people to consider consecrated life.

What is the Year
of Mercy?
Seeing the great need
for mercy and healing
in the world, Pope
Francis called for the
Year of Mercy—a
special period, also
known as a Holy
Year or Jubilee Year,
for
the
Catholic
Church. It is a time
for the Church across
the world to take approximately a year to
focus on forgiveness and healing in a special
way.
Pope Francis has asked us as individuals and
as a Church “to be a witness of mercy” by
reflecting on and practicing the spiritual and
corporal works of mercy (Pope Francis’
Announcement of the Year of Mercy).
Beginning December 8, 2015, the Holy Year
of Mercy will focus on studying and
reflecting on mercy, receiving mercy, and
being merciful towards others. To read

What is a Jubilee Year?
A Jubilee Year is when the Catholic Church
across the world takes approximately a year
to focus on forgiveness and healing in a
special way. Catholics are encouraged to
join together in prayer, go to confession, and
share the genius of Catholicism with others.
The purpose of a Jubilee Year is to help
people grow spiritually, strengthen their
faith, and encourage works of service, and to
promote unity within the Catholic Church
and society in general. The last Jubilee Year
was in 2000, called for by Pope Saint John
Paul II.
The Advent season allows us to prayerfully prepare for the incarnation of our
Lord Jesus Christ. We are grateful for this greatest gift from God the Father
and the enduring presence of Christ in our holy Catholic Church. As
parishioners of the Church of the Divine Child we are entrusted with the
responsibility of bringing people to the Lord and answering the call to holiness.
We must strive to keep the Church of the Divine Child a strong and vibrant
part of our community. One way we can all participate in strengthening Divine
Child is by attending to the needs associated with keeping our parish
financially strong.
Throughout the year, seven percent of funds donated to the Church of the
Divine Child are shared with the Archdiocese of Detroit to assist with day to
day needs, with one exception. All of the funds donated during Christmas
remain with the Church of the Divine Child. We refer to this as the annual
Christmas Fund. The Christmas Fund plays a key role in our financial stability.
Please consider donating a little extra to this year’s Christmas Fund by using
the special Christmas Fund envelope you received earlier in the year. If you
participate in Faith Direct, or would like to make an additional donation, please
label any envelope as Christmas Fund and drop in the collection basket or
deliver to the parish office. Thank you and God bless you for your generosity!

What is the Indulgence for the
Year of Mercy?
Like any Jubilee Year, a person can receive
a plenary indulgence for the Year of Mercy.
A plenary indulgence removes all of what is
called “temporal punishment” due to sins
that have already been forgiven. Sin and evil
are real. Every sin, large or small, is in some
way a rejection of the-best-version-ofourselves and a rejection of God. “Temporal
punishment” is the natural consequence of
that sin, the necessary purification following
forgiveness of sin. (See Catechism of the

Mercy)

Christmas Dinner Prayer
Loving God and Father of us all, we joyfully celebrate the birth of your Son,
the eternal Word who came to dwell with us and is born this day of the Virgin
Mary.
May the meal we share on this great feast satisfy us not only with the good food
you give us, but also grace us with the fullness of your love, which
you bestowed on our human nature when your Son took on our
very flesh. May we come to share completely in your divine life
through the coming of your Son among us. May his self-giving
love be made manifest in our hearts so that the joy of our
Christmas feast may extend beyond our family and home to touch
the lives of others with the love that makes this day holy and
makes us all children of one family in you.

Good Last Minute Advent Suggestions:
1. During the next week, spend an hour in prayer for those who are the victims of abuse or
neglect.
2. Read Matthew 25: 31-46, or another passage of the Bible.
3. As a family, prepare a basket of food and give it to a family in need.
4. Skip a meal at your favorite restaurant. Use the money to purchase a Christmas gift for a
person served by a parish organization or local charity.
5. Pray for someone you may have offended or been uncharitable towards, and send a Christmas

For weeks, we have been preparing for the birth of our savior, Jesus
Christ. Indeed, Christmas is a season when the spirit of generosity is
most evident. But Christian stewards are called to share their gifts
year-round, not just during a single season. The Catholic Services
Appeal gives us the opportunity to do this, both through our pledges
and through the valuable ministries, programs, and services the CSA
funds each day. The archdiocesan departments of Parish Life and
Services; Communications; Evangelization, Catechesis, and Schools;
and Development and Stewardship all receive support from gifts to the
CSA, as do the Office of Priestly Vocations and Sacred Heart Major
Seminary. In planning your year-end donations, giving to the CSA is
an excellent way to benefit your parish. CSA collections over the
parish target are refunded without archdiocesan assessment to be used
in parish programs and projects. More than $20.1 million has already
been pledged to the 2015 Catholic Services Appeal. If you make a gift

Priestly Vocations: “The Watchmen” Regional
Discernment Groups
Are you a man ages 16-55 who wants to actively discern your
vocation as a Catholic priest? Or maybe you are just interested in
learning more about the priesthood and meeting people who are
working toward the same goal?
These Regional Discernment groups will meet bi-monthly for a time
of prayer, presentations on discernment, and fellowship. These groups
