La Romanée, the jewel of the domain within whose boundaries it lies exclusively, is the smallest appellation d’origine contrôlée in France (8400 m2). In the prolongation of Romanée-Conti, this fabulous terroir has been recovered in its entirety by the Liger-Belair family who are resolved to take it to the very highest level. Dominique Lafon succeeded his father in 1984, at first with his brother Bruno. The estate is composed of 16.3 hectares split amongst four villages: Meursault, Volnay, Monthélie and Chassagne-Montrachet, and covers 15 appellations. Volnay 1er cru Santenots du milieu 2012 150 € Volnay 1er cru Santenots du milieu 2013 160 € Domaine Leroy The wines of Lalou Bize-Leroy continue to inspire and amaze. This woman with her extraordinary palate nurtures one of the most personal visions of wine in all of Burgundy to produce what are some of the greatest wines in the world. The vines are tended using biodynamic methods, without compromise, no matter what the implications. No matter if nature sometimes makes her pay dearly, this great lady remains unwavering in her choices. That's why I give great care to work the soil. My vines are conducted in organic farming since 1999. Proud of the heritage passed on to me my ancestors, I like to keep a healthy soil, capable of giving its multiple traits to each of my wines. My wine wants to be the true reflection of the terroir or addition of yeast, or reverse osmosis, or too technical interventions or too much wood that denatures the wine. I like the finesse and elegance, Chardonnay Pinot aging ... which pinote ... and pleasure above all! Pommard 1er Cru Epenots 2011 120 € Pommard 1er Cru Rugiens 2011 120 € Domaine Tortochot Chantal Tortochot returned to the domain in 1996 and is little by little adopting organic methods. Fining and filtering were abandoned in 1999, and the wines have progressed well in recent years, leaving behind some of the irregularities of the past. They possess a forthright style with fine fruit characters. Their perfectly reasonable pricing structure makes this an excellent address for those in search of good value. Jean-Nicolas Méo tends his vines meticulously and is a skilful winemaker who knows how to produce great Burgundy; smooth and polished at first, rising in intensity and developing luxuriant texture. The aromas mature after several years’ bottle ageing and the wines increase in depth. It goes without saying that all of these qualities are known to the whole world, and his entire production is sold in advance. In 2003, Cécile Tremblay inherited her great grandparents’ vines, scattered in small, but ideally situated parcels at Vosne, Morey, Chambolle and Gevrey. She naturally opted for organic agriculture, with the objective of going biodynamic in the longer term. A believer in whole bunch vinification, she aims not for overly powerful wines but those with a harmoniously balanced structure and luxuriantly velvety textures. The domaine was created in 1981 by Joël Hudelot (inherited largely from his father Paul) and his wife Chantal Baillet. Joël retired in 2004 and passed along the reins to his son-in-law Dominique Leguen, who had been working with him at the domaine since 1998. The viticultural philosophy is basically organic though the domaine is not technically certified. There are no insecticides used and sexual confusion is employed instead to combat problematic bugs. The harvest is performed manually with sorting work done in the vineyards and again at the cuverie if necessary. Perpetuating the family tradition Bernard Dugat-Py embarked on his first vintage in 1975, and created the Domaine Bernard Dugat-Py in 1994 (combining his name with his wife’s maiden name, Py). Working closely with his wife and his son he forms part of the elite of the Côte d’Or, with vineyards that are some of the most beautifully tended in all of Burgundy. These old vines originating from their own root stock (massal selection) confer a unique flavour on the grapes. Made with a minimum of intervention, using a high proportion of whole clusters, they give deeply coloured, powerful wines that carry the imprint of the terroir. Slow to develop, they only reveal their full splendour after several years ageing. Organic methods started to be put in place in 1966, and the domain received certification in 2005. Guillaume Berthier was appointed Technical Director in 2013 and this young team are already producing very convincing wines. Mazoyères Chambertin Grand Cru 2013 210 € Domaine Georges Roumier Christophe Roumier continues to work in all serenity to produce wines of consummate balance. The domain possesses an extensive heritage of old vines and magnificent terroirs in Bonnes-Mares, Musigny, and in the Cru of Les Amoureuses. Le Clos de la Bussière, acquired in 1953 and replanted in the eighties, represents, in the most recent vintages, an excellent introduction to the wines of this domain. Few producers are making wines of such beauty, whatever the vintage. Chambolle-Musigny 2013 120 € Morey-Saint-Denis Clos de la Bussière 2012 150 € Domaine Armand Rousseau For several years Eric Rousseau, son of Charles and grandson of Armand, has been making an impression with a subtle combination of elegance, nobility and density, but also silkiness of texture and softly spicy notes that render his wines immediately recognisable. The conservation of the biodiversity, the problem of the collapse of grounds, the energy consumption, the constant search to limit inputs are constant working track and correspond to no satisfactory label. Less well-known than their cousin Jean-Louis Trapet, the Rossignol brothers - Nicolas and his younger brother David - have always placed the greatest importance on the way the vineyard is run. They first adopted biodynamics in 1997, with the conversion of the entire domain in 2004. From the simplest Gevrey-Chambertin to the greatest Grand Crus, Nicolas and David make remarkable wines that are full and incisive with, at the zenith, an amazingly accomplished Chambertin. Latricières Chambertin Grand Cru 2010 200 € Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru 2010 200 € Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat has extensive vineyard holdings based around the Noëllat heartland of VosneRomanée and covering all the villages from Nuits St Georges to Chambolle-Musigny. Charles Hudelot arrived at the domaine to take over from his grandfather Alain in 2008, assisted also by Vincent Munier who has been working there since 2005. There is no intention to deviate from the previous style of fine, fragrant wines however. Small changes include the purchase of a new destemmer which sends the grapes into the fermentation vats uncrushed. The vineyards continue to be run according to lutte raisonnée though Charles is open to an organic approach in the future. New oak remains unobtrusive, with 20% for the village wines and up to 50-60% for the grands crus wines.
