Fame and Friendship: Pope, Roubiliac
and the Portrait Bust
No literary figure in 18th-century Britain was
more famous or more widely depicted than
the poet Alexander Pope. Some of the most
celebrated painted portraits of Pope are shown
alongside a selection of his printed texts and
eight versions of Louis François Roubiliac’s
marble bust of Pope. This major loan
exhibition, a collaboration with the Yale
Center for British Art, explores how fame
and friendships could be celebrated through
sculpture, and the central role of replication
in 18th-century sculptural practice.

AT WAddEsdoN:
BRUCE MUNRo
12 November - 4 January
Continuing our exploration of light at
Waddesdon, we are delighted to be
collaborating again with artist Bruce
Munro who returns for the third phase
of his residency. Munro, hailed by The
independent’s Adrian Hamilton as
“discovery of the Year” for his work at
Waddesdon in 2013, will once again
transform the Gardens with a series of
immersive and imaginative light works,
an experience not to be missed.
New for this year is a commission inside
the House. snow Code is a digital
installation blending light, language,
technology and sound. Bruce writes,
“i recently discovered that the inuit
people have 19 (plus) words for snow.
i asked myself how such a climatic frozen
deposit could be so diverse in description,
but i soon learned that the meaning of
‘snow’ encompasses a whole range of
states of frozen precipitation. i find the
idea rather poetic. Here the inuit words
for ‘snow’ have been transcribed into
Morse-coded flecks, in an exploration
of language, graphics, and light.”
