NPH Haiti Under the NPH umbrella, the Father Wasson Angels of Light (FWAL) program founded the St. Anne Baby House and St. Louis Home. These homes have been a safe haven for the displaced and vulnerable children from Haiti’s devastating earthquake in 2010. Today, up to 200 children under age 16 receive care, education and spiritual formation in the loving tradition of “St. Helene,” our flagship facility in Kenscoff, Haiti. Many of the grown children of St. Helene now serve as caregivers and teachers to this new generation of NPH children. FWAL also operates a free primary school for these children and children from the community totaling 800 students. Haiti, Port-au-Prince, Tabarre Hello! My name is Aslin and I am 4-years-old and the girl next to me is Christy, she is also 4-years-old. We are in the second class of the preschool of the Father Wasson Angels of Light school, “Ange de Lumiere.“ Did you know that in Haiti, 3o% of children in primary school will not make it to third grade and 6o% will leave school before sixth grade. Christy and I know we will make it! after before Maybe you heard that we had a party because we inaugurated our new primary school campus. All the children from 1st to 7th grade are now going to the beautiful new school made out of concrete block and a metal roof. It is much better than it used to be when they were having class in the tents. Our preschool moved from tents into metal shipping containers and that is much better too. Look, this is all of us, 2oo preschool children getting ready to go into our classrooms. We all stand in lines and sing songs before entering the class. I don’t like singing all that much but Christy does! Christy and I have two really nice teachers; Madam Dorlus and Madam Benoit, we like them a lot, they are always happy and help us with the things we are doing and learning. Do you know that we learn French when we go to preschool? It sounds a lot like Creole but it is different. I like Creole more but Christy likes French because she says it sounds nice in the songs she likes to sing. Here you can see our container class rooms; we made them real nice with drawings and garlands. Of course our teachers helped us. We also have a big paper on the wall with all our names and our birthdays on it. When it is our birthday we are allowed to climb on one of the benches and the other children and our teachers sing for us. Since we are having school in the containers we now have a shaded patio to play. One of the best times at school is recess. Christy likes jumping rope and I just love to run around and play tag or jump on one of our cars and drive around with other children in the back. I have a lot of friends at school. The other really good thing about going to school is that we get a meal of rice and beans before we go home. Christy and I are very happy with this because before we went to school we did not always get a meal every day. As you can see we are happy to be in our new place in the containers. But the best is still to come. The people from the Father Wasson Angels of Light program are also planning to build a real preschool for us. So we hope that soon we also will be in a cool block building with a metal roof. We still need some more money to make this really happen and it would make us very happy if you were willing to help with this. Because going to school is the best thing ever! Christy and I will write you all again when we are in our new school and tell you all about it and show you pictures of how it looks!
