Any physical phenomenon provides hints to geophysics: vibration, sound, mass, electric and magnetic properties, heat, radiation, and cosmic ray; as much as our imagination could lead us. With a clear understanding of the phenomenon, we can predict what is in the invisible space. With appropriate instrumentation, we can probe it. With the wildest imagination, we can develop ways to “see the invisible”. Geophysicists study the natural phenomena to understand the system. Some geophysicists design instruments right for observing the phenomena and some geophysicists interpret the data to “see” the invisible. Geophysics is a fun subject. It offers you a lot of challenge and a lot of reward. OSCAR FERNANDEZ Repsol Lecture available thanks to AAPG Visiting Geoscientist Program TUE 9:00 "Petroleum exploration and structural geology: from seismic interpretation to fracture modeling” Oscar Fernandez is a structural geologist with over 10 years in the international oil & gas business. He earned his degrees in geology and a PhD from the Universitat de Barcelona (Spain). After years in northern latitudes (working for BP, Roxar and Midland Valley Exp.), he decided to head back to a warmer climate and currently works as the senior structural geologist in Repsol, Madrid. 23 lecture room 7 SPEAKRES WITOLD SZCZUCINSKI Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań „Innovation, Integration, Motivation - Insights from a Geoscientists" MON 10:30 Innovation - new idea, device, or method Integration – the usage of different methods and multiple disciplines Motivation - Internal and external factors that stimulate desire and energy in people to be continually interested and committed to a job, role or subject, or to make an effort to attain a goal. As geoscientists we face different issues that can be handled in various ways. By finding new solutions, take advantage of existing methods we can achieve desired goals. MON 11:30 - Piotr Głowacki Institute of Geophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences "Polish Activity Experience and Investigation in European Sector of the Arctic” 24 lecture room 7 SPEAKRES ELZBIETA WOJCIK - WED 12:45 MAX Solutions „Exploration of Unconventional Reservoirs from an Operators Point of View” Exploitation of Unconventional Oil and Gas Reservoirs. Considerations for geologists and geophysicists. Completion design and monitor of fracture stimulation. MARIUSZ MAJDANSKI Institute of Geophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences "Refraction Seismic in Modern Geophysics” MON 15:30 Refracted arrivals of seismic waves has been observed and correctly interpreted for centuries. In 1940’s they were extensively used for exploration. In the last 60 years refraction seismic has been gradually abandoned with rapid development of the seismic imaging techniques based on reflection seismic. During that time refraction methods were developed and used mostly by scientific community for basic science like study of the deep Earth interior or global tectonics. In this talk I would like to present achievements of the Institute of Geophysics PAS and other Polish geophysicists in those studies, but also explain the role of the refraction seismic in currently developed methods used for exploration. 25 WORKSHOPS - TUE 14:30 - 17:00 KLUAS FISCHER Wintershall Workshop available thanks to EAGE „Case Studies in Seismic Stratigraphy” ROOM 2.21 The workshop will give a short overview on the methodology of sequence stratigraphy and especially of seismic stratigraphy. It will describe rec¬ommended workflows based on a series of case studies and examples both from siliciclastic and carbonate depositional environments in order to highlight the use of the method in exploration and production. NORBERT SMALERA Polish Oil and Gas Company Workshop available thanks to GeoTalent "Synthetic Seismograms” ROOM 2.22 The synthetic seismogram is a result of a function that merges reflection coefficients with the signal. What does it mean, what is convolution function and how does it work? Seismograms are used for example for tying seismic reflections to geological boundaries that are obtained from ex. well measurements. Compiling seismograms with seismic traces, acoustic and density logs allows the identification of acoustic impedance changes and combining them with lithology or/and reservoir properties. Seismograms may also be useful for geological modeling and calculation of its predictable seismic response, with determined signal parameters. They may be used practically in every step of seismic research. During the workshop we shall calculate reflection coefficients, convolution function and... 26 WORKSHOPS - TUE 14:30 - 17:00 SEWERYN TLALKA Geofizyka Toruń SA "From Time to Depth - Key Elements of the Seismic Data Processing” ROOM 2.23 The author will focus on the seismic data processing stage and will explain its main role in the integrated geophysical surveys. The workshop will cover the main aspects of seismic data processing techniques, both land and marine datasets for 2D, wide line, as well as 3D data. The main steps of seismic data processing will be presented starting from a geometry, coherent and random noise elimination, signal processing, amplitude scaling, static corrections, velocity analysis, stacking and pre-stack time and depth migrations including depth imaging. The effectiveness of presented methods will be shown on a real and a synthetic data examples. FILIP BIELICKI Independent Consultant „Dude, Where’s My Play?" ROOM 2.24 The world offers various types of sedimentary basins, they differ one from another, among others, with stratigraphic infill, tectonic style or subsidence mechanisms. The workshop presents basin types, associated facies, tectonic features and points out places of economic interest. Participants will be provided with G&G data derived from selected basins, their role will be to test all reliable hypotheses versus available data and develop play concepts. Further discussion will take place, therefore everyone will be able to rise their voice to support interpretation and build final exploration recommendation. Basic knowledge of basin analysis, sedimentology and geophysics is not required, but will be helpful. 27 WORKSHOPS - TUE 14:30 - 17:00 MACIEJ MENDECKI AND MICHAL GLAZER University of Silesia "Shallow Geophysical Prospection Using Seismic and Resistivity Methods” ROOM 3.45 third floor Two groups of near-surface methods are extremely popular: seismic and resistivity measurements. The workshop will cover the physical principles of the methods using seismic waves field and electric field. The workshop lecturers will present the research methodology and results interpretation which usually is not easy and requires some knowledge of physics, geology or even hydrogeology. During the course several case studies will be shown concerning an application of these methods to investigate underground body waters, archeological objects, landslides mapping and some problems in geo-engineering study. GRZEGORZ LIZUREK AND KONSTANTINOS LEPTOKAROPULOS Institute of Geophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences ROOM 46 ground floor „A Digital Research Space To Facilitate Integrated Approach To Anthropogenic Seismic Hazard” The IS-EPOS IT-platform is an open virtual access point for researchers studying anthropogenic seismicity and related hazards. During the workshop researchers will have possibility to deal with main functionalities of the platform as: data browsing, selecting and visualizing and also perform advanced data processing out of which the probabilistic seismic analysis service group is particular rich. 28 ICEBREAKER MONDAY 11 JULY | 19:00 - 21:30 All conference participants can attend the IceBreaker Reception. The Czech border is just 100 kilometers away and bigger Polish cities like Wrocław or Kraków lie from Katowice about 200 and 80 km respectively. With 300 000 citizens Katowice is the most inhabited city in the Upper Silesian urban area and the capital of Silesian voivodeship. The main factor that caused growth of the city was quickly developing mining industry. The first coal mine was launched in 1740. In the second half of 20th century nearly 10% of Polish coal and 70% of zinc was coming from Katowice. Nowdays all coal mines belong to one of the biggest mining syndicates in Poland - Katowicki Holding Węglowy. The majority of city's monuments are related to mining but in Katowice one can also see, among others, probably the most famous Polish arena (Spodek), newly built National Sympchony Orchestra and also main square which was completely rebuild this year. The city offers wide range of tourist attractions, for example: 1. NIKISZOWIEC Nikiszowiec is a proletarian estate located in eastern part of Katowice, next to Mysłowice. Its name comes from mining shaft „Nickischschacht”. Nikiszowiec was built in the years 1908-1919 when other part of Katowice – Giszowiec – ran out of places for labourers. In the contrast to loose, single-storey buildings of Giszowiec, the architects of Nikiszowiec proposed three-story brick blocks that created quadrangles with inner yards. Nine of those blocks were constructed. Besides them there was built of course the whole infrastructure like schools and shops. The most glamorous building of Nikiszowiec - the St. Anna Church – was built in 1927. In the center of the estate there is main square where stands the building of inn with characteristic rose-themed mosaic on its facade. Many of famous Polish directors such as Kazimierz Kutz or Lech Majewski shot their movies in Nikiszowiec. 2. SPODEK (FLYING SAUCER) Legendary hall opened in 1971. It is named after its characteristic shape that resembles a UFO. The reason for its original architecture was the need for the building to be resistant to mining bumps. It is one of very few places in Poland where superstars like Sting, Tina Turner, , Elton John, , Deep Purple, Metallica, Genesis, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, Black Sabbath, Rammstein, Iron Maiden, Korn, or Slipknot performed. It is also venue of major sporting events like European Athletics Indoor Championships (1975), Volleyball World League Final (2001 and 2007), Volleyball Men's World Championship (2014) or annual Intel Extreme Masters that is the largest e-sporting event in this part of Europe. 3.
