A walk through the City Centre - route 2
Rynek – Tourist Information Centre is situated here. The “Zenit” department store is in the place of the former Welt Hotel, in which J. Strauss gave
a concert. Leaving the Rynek, at 3 Maja Street it is worth seeing house no 6,
“Under a shoe”.

A Neo-Baroque bourgeois tenement house at the corner of 5 Pocztowa
and 2 Młyńska Streets. Erected in 1989 on a triangular layout. The bugle call
of Katowice is played from here every day at noon.
3 The post office building erected in the style of a Neo-Renaissance palace (1893), after the reconstruction in the interwar period obtained features
of Neo-Classicism.

The first in Silesia “Rialto” cinema-theatre, built in 1912 by Martin
Tichauer. Now it belongs to the Network of Art and Local Cinemas.

The garrison church – the first modernistic sacred building in Poland. Inside - genuine Art Deco equipment. Nearby a Monument to Katyń Victims in Andrzej Square.

“The Skyscraper” – the building of the Revenue Office in 15/17 Żwirki
i Wigury Street, the first Polish 14-storey skyscraper, built acc. to the design by
Tadeusz Kozłowski and Stefan Bryła. At that time this was one of the highest
buildings in Poland. The building is included in the Katowice Route of Modernism.

11 The historical complex of Regional Court buildings, Neo-Renaissance
(1988) and Neo-Baroque (1913). Eclectic buildings of Detention on Remand,
1888.
12 Silesian Insurgents House, 3, Jana Matejki Street - 1937, Functionalism,
built acc. to the design by Zbigniew Rzepecki.
13 Wolności Square – one of the oldest squares in the city, surrounded by
historical, 19th century, tenement houses. At number 12a - a Neo-Renaissance
villa of the Goldstein family; now the Registry Office.
14 The seat of H.M. Górecki Silesian Philharmonic /2, Sokolska Street/ - the
first concert hall in Katowice. It was the venue of Jan Padarewski piano recital
in 1901. Prof. Karol Stryja - the originator of the Grzegorz Fitelberg International Conductors’ Competition - was once its director and conductor. After
a major refurbishment the building gained, among others - a patio under the
sky, “a music lover zone” and a seminar room with a café.
15 The A. Mickiewicz 3rd Grammar School – a Neo-Gothic historical building
erected in 1900, with a characteristic rose window.
16 The former municipal eclectic bath house built in 1911 . A bust of Richard
Holtze, one of the city founders, is situated on the building.
17 The Former building of Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego /State Economy
Bank/, 3, Mickiewicza street (1930) - is one of facilities in the Katowice Route
of Modernism.
18 The Monument to Silesian Insurgents commemorates three uprisings
of Silesian people in the years of 1919-1921.
19 The “Spodek” Entertainment-Sports Arena – constructed in 1971, up to

interwar period Katowice gained the name of “Polish Chicago”.

8 The Neo-Gothic Church of St. Apostles Peter and Paul, dating back to

20 The new building of Silesian Museum – its substantial part is situated
underground; not only exhibitions are organised there, but also concerts, conferences and workshops.
9 The Palace of Youth, 1951 /Mikołowska street 26/ - a monumental edifice
in the style of late Modernism and Socialist Realism. An establishment of extra-school education. It houses - among others - a swimming pool, a theatre
for 450 spectators and a courtyard with a fountain. The building was subject
to major refurbishment.
10 The Jewish cemetery, dating back to 1868, with approx. 1400 graves preserved (including the Goldstein family).
21 International Congress Centre – a multifunction facility, the venue of
European Economic Congress as well as of other conferences, concerts, sport
events and banquets; it houses 15,000 persons.
22 The concert hall of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra – the
building constructed acc. to the world standards in cooperation with a Japanese acoustic laboratory; performers included Krystian Zimmerman and the
Vienna Philharmonic.
