As a key partner to the hospital since its creation, the Fondation has seen fifteen wonderful years of great achievements and success, all for the benefit of CHUM patients. These fifteen years have been filled with campaigns and activities that have helped raise a significant amount of money, making possible the purchase of cutting-edge technology as well as aiding research and education. Thanks to the support of a committed business community, the capital fundraising campaign Giving Ourselves the Best in Health care is currently heading towards its objective. In the fall of 2013, we inaugurated the Centre de recherche du CHUM (CRCHUM) – this was Phase 1 of the new CHUM construction project. This state-of-the-art centre is a source of great pride for the Fondation du CHUM, whose support for research is unwavering. For the past 15 years, the Fondation has made every effort to support the CHUM’s teams and ensure that the hospital remains a unique place and a leader in its field, where patients can be assured of receiving the very best care. Thanks to the Fondation, we are confident in our ability to go even further in our pursuit of excellence, and convinced that we can continue giving our patients the best in healthcare. To all donors and partners, dedicated women and men, thank you for your generous and constant commitment to the CHUM! Jacques Turgeon, Ph. D. Executive Director CHUM 4 Jean-Claude Deschênes Chairman of the Board CHUM AN HISTORIC YEAR Since its creation in 1998, the Fondation du CHUM has rallied an entire community whose actions have helped shape the CHUM into what it is today: a major institution. It is one of the largest teaching hospitals centres in North America, recognized for its excellence in healthcare, education and research and for the expertise of its teams. Over the years, thanks to the support of good-hearted people who believe that together we can help in giving patients the best in healthcare, we have witnessed many superb achievements, all for the greater benefit of patients. It is with pride and appreciation that the Fondation concludes 2013-2014 – a year marked by the celebration of its 15th anniversary, with nearly $19 million donated to the CHUM. An historic first due primarily to the loyalty and generosity of each of our donors and partners, whom we would like to thank most sincerely. This outstanding contribution enables us to provide the best possible care to patients of the CHUM. The significant accomplishments, which we are pleased to present to you in this activity report, are a testament to, and a reflection of, your involvement and commitment toward the CHUM and its patients. We look forward to a promising future with the development of the new CHUM, which is taking shape and progressing every day. Over the next year, we will continue to pursue our mission relentlessly. We will do so by ensuring that each contribution is managed rigorously and by constantly striving to maintain low administrative costs so that your every gesture continues to make a big difference. If the Fondation is the lung that enables the CHUM to breathe – as a physician of our hospital centre once said – then you, dear donors and partners, are without a doubt its beating heart. We would like to express our deepest gratitude for your unwavering support. Thank you. It will open its doors to the first patients in 2016. THE NEW CHUM IS: • A $2.5 billion project in 3 phases: • A surface area of 268,100 m2 • 2013 • 2016 • 2020 (= Place Ville Marie + 40 floors) • 772 individual patient rooms • Some 40 operating rooms • A cornerstone of the future Quartier de la santé A WORLD-CLASS RESEARCH CENTRE The first phase of the new CHUM, the CRCHUM, was inaugurated in the fall of 2013. This world-class research centre was completed on time and on budget. It also incorporates the Integrated Centre of Teaching and Education (CIEF), the most important hospital simulation centre in Quebec. It is composed of a team of 1,900 people, including 435 researchers with access to state-of-the-art facilities and equipment such as: • 75 laboratories • 36 clinical examination rooms • 1 cyclotron • Spectrometry platforms FONDATION DU CHUM 2013-2014 ACTIVITY REPORT 9 GIVING THE BEST IN HEALTH CARE Thanks to the generosity of its donors, the Fondation was able to donate $18,685,911 to its hospital centre this year. You played an important role in the many accomplishments made possible in 2013-2014. Here are a few examples: $15,004,090 Care, equipment and health promotion In the summer of 2013, the first patients benefited from the innovative capabilities of the new dual energy CT scanner and planning MRI of the CHUM’s radiation oncology Department. The CT scanner: • Enables faster examinations, often within a second or less, which means less discomfort for the patient • Provides more accurate, higher quality results • Combines the efficiency of two devices in one, due to dual energy. It is very efficient, using less radiation, and provides better access to care. 80% This also contributes to new research opportunities. The involvement of radiation oncologists, physicians and other department employees in an internal fundraising campaign, in addition to contributions from our donors, enabled us to raise $225,000 for these activities. THE CHUM, THE FIRST HOSPITAL IN THE WORLD TO BENEFIT FROM A DUAL ENERGY CT SCANNER “It’s important for radiation oncologists and their teams to see that donors share their commitment to providing superior health care services. This equipment will enable us to improve our health care services and push research even further.” Dr. David Roberge, head of the CHUM’s radiation oncology Department 10 FOR THE WELL-BEING OF BURN VICTIMS Thanks to the generosity of the Quebec Firefighters Foundation for Major Burn Victims, a long-term partner of the Fondation du CHUM, the burn victims unit has been able to acquire the best equipment, including an intrapulmonary percussive ventilation respirator. “The device blows air into the patient’s lungs and aspirates secretions, thus improving the respiratory status of severe inhalation burn victims.” Dr. Isabelle Perreault, medical director of the burn victims unit and the Centre of Expertise for Major Burn Victims of Western Quebec, and plastic surgeon at the CHUM PREVENTING ESOPHAGEAL CANCER Patients suffering from Barrett’s Esophagus, a disease that increases the risk of developing esophageal cancer, can now benefit from a new endoscopic treatment that uses radiofrequency energy by means of the BarrxTM Flex System, for which the Fondation contributed nearly $200,000. “Radiofrequencies are used to treat precancerous cells in the esophagus with little or no pain for patients. It’s a fast and minimally invasive procedure that has excellent results. Most patients are cured after only a few treatments.” Isabelle Jordaneau, endoscopy nurse at the CHUM A BEDSIDE TECHNOLOGY FOR CARDIOLOGY PATIENTS Patients of the cardiology Department can now benefit from a new information TV channel in their room. Called the Learning Channel, this technology forms part of an awareness-raising initiative for patients suffering from cardiovascular problems and helps empower them with regard to their care. “I recently treated a patient who had suffered an infarction and I was really happy to be able to give her tools she could consult whenever she wanted.” Nathalie Duchesne, nurse at the CHUM’s cardiovascular Centre FONDATION DU CHUM 2013-2014 ACTIVITY REPORT 11 13% $2,389,265 Research Proud to support CRCHUM’s excellence, contribute to its teams’ innovative discoveries and attract promising new talent or renowned researchers, the Fondation du CHUM donated $1,824,265 to the centre this year. The CRCHUM is active in clinical, basic, evaluative and epidemiological research, and is the only facility in the Quebec hospital sector to cover the full spectrum of research. The Fondation also supports the Université de Montréal in the creation of approximately 15 research and teaching chairs and has donated a total of $5,960,000 to date, including $560,000 this year. Here are a few examples of advances made possible this year by these contributions: NEW TREATMENTS FOR OSTEOARTHRITIS “The work of researchers from the Osteoarthritis Research Unit has led to important advances in the treatment of this disease. Most notably through the development of innovative diagnostic methods, which help to identify more accurately the patients who have a better chance of success if treated with new medications. The development of new treatments for personalized medicine is one of the most promising research avenues for patients.” Dr. Jean-Pierre Pelletier, head of the rheumatology department and director of the Osteoarthritis Research Unit at the CHUM HOPE FOR TRANSPLANT PATIENTS In 2013, the research team led by Dr. Marie-Josée Hébert, transplant nephrologist at the CHUM, identified a new cause of organ rejection: anti-LG3 antibodies. Further research is being undertaken to develop new therapies that will address this problem. “It’s exciting to see that our efforts over the past 10 years have led to practical applications for patients.” HELPING THOSE LIVING WITH HIV Developed by José Côté, holder of the Research Chair on New Nursing Practices, and her team, the VIH-TAVIE (HIV-Your Life) project is the result of four years of research and development. The Web application provides personalized advice to patients living with HIV from a virtual nurse regarding their medication. It also provides them with psychological support and help in adopting a more positive attitude toward their drugs. 12 TOWARD AN AGE OF “À LA CARTE” MEDICINE “In 2010, we created one of the largest biobanks in Canada, where a large collection of tumour samples from patients suffering from liver, pancreatic and bile duct cancer is stored. The ultimate goal of the research on human tissue is to personalize and individualize each patient’s treatment, to eventually achieve a form of ‘à la carte’ medicine.” Dr. Réal Lapointe, holder of the Roger Des Groseillers Chair in hepatobiliary/pancreatic (HPB) surgical oncology and head of the Department of HPB surgery at the CHUM GREAT PROGRESS IN THE FIGHT AGAINST BREAST CANCER “We have been pioneers in the development of preoperative patient assessments. This new approach helps to accelerate the implementation of new treatments and, in some cases, even makes the tumour disappear completely.” Dr. André Robidoux, holder of the Scotiabank Chair in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, and oncology surgeon at the CHUM 7% $1,292,556 Teaching In the spring of 2013, CHUM physicians and health professionals were awarded postdoctoral fellowships totalling $1 million. These bursaries were provided by the Council of physicians, dentists and pharmacists (CPDP) and the Fondation du CHUM. “Thanks to this bursary, I can pursue a two-year high-level training program in cornea and refractive surgery at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary at Harvard. In my work, I have developed an eye drop treatment for severe inflammation of the eye surface and have had the opportunity to present my results at many international conferences.” Marie-Claude Robert, MD, FRCSC (ophthalmology), fellow in cornea and refractive surgery at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School and future ophthalmologist at the CHUM “The practice of pharmacy in a hospital centre like the CHUM requires additional training in order to provide high quality care to patients suffering from hematologic cancer. This internship has allowed me to gain valuable clinical experience and become a better teacher, researcher, clinician and manager – all for the greater benefit of our patients.” Jean-Philippe Adam, pharmacist specializing in hemato-oncology at the CHUM FONDATION DU CHUM 2013-2014 ACTIVITY REPORT 13 THE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN The capital campaign is one of the most important financing campaigns in the Canadian health sector and aims to provide our hospital with essential resources for the continuous improvement of patient care. It is vital to the expansion of the current CHUM and the development of the new CHUM. Most of the funds raised through the campaign Giving Ourselves the Best in Health care will go toward the purchase of advanced equipment for the CHUM, the CRCHUM and the CIEF. A few examples: • A simulator for cardiac ultrasound and a simulator for laparoscopy and urology, with a total value of more than $320,000, which are enabling CIEF students to practice and perfect their skills as part of their training. • 4 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) devices, totalling more than $5 million in value, making it possible to provide precise images of tissues and organs in fields such as cardiology and neuroscience. TARGET: $300 MILLION WE ARE 60% THERE AT $179 MILLION* Guy Savard, C.M., FCA Special Counsel, Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt Yves Des Groseillers Chairman of the Board, President and CEO, Groupe BMTC inc. HONOURING OUR DONORS All those donors who contributed to the purchase of the da Vinci SI surgical robotic device were invited in March to a special tribute event. Many of the attendees had the chance to experience the stateof the-art device close up, as well as meeting CHUM professionals who made this important achievement possible. The ultra-precise da Vinci SI robot permits minimally invasive surgical procedures with many benefits for patients, including significant reductions in postoperative pain and much smaller scars. FONDATION DU CHUM 2013-2014 ACTIVITY REPORT 15 GESTURES THAT INSPIRE HOPE Since its inception, the Fondation has been privileged to count on nearly 113,000 donors who have helped shape the CHUM of today and tomorrow. Every gesture they make is significant and inspires hope of providing the best healthcare to the hospital’s patients. We are profoundly grateful to them, because their generosity enables CHUM professionals to save lives every day. There are various ways of donating to the Fondation du CHUM, including planned gifts, and “In Honour” and “In Memoriam” donations. These are all excellent ways of investing in one of our most vital resources – health – while benefiting from tax advantages. TYPES OF PLANNED GIFTS: Life insurance policy: Testamentary bequest: allows you to make a significant donation while paying only a portion of the capital donated. allows you to leave a sum of money, a specified property or a percentage of your assets. Publicly-traded securities: may suit a donor who holds securities that have gained significantly in value since their acquisition. Charitable annuity: allows you a constant and guaranteed income for life or for a fixed period, in exchange for an irrevocable contribution of money. FONDATION DU CHUM 2013-2014 ACTIVITY REPORT 17 MEMORABLE AND SUCCESSFUL FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES Some of our fundraising activities are quickly becoming established traditions, and with their continued success they are making tangible contributions to the well-being of CHUM patients. The fact that so many people participate in these prestigious events is very gratifying since it reflects their confidence in our commitment to the CHUM. 2013 DNA EXPERIENCE With its second successful DNA Experience urban ball, the DNA Committee - the Future of the Fondation du CHUM has demonstrated that its original idea of staging a must-attend evening to attract a new generation of philanthropists was a brilliant one. The event, which took place in October at the St. James Theatre, attracted some 500 young professionals and succeeded in raising $260,987! “I’m lucky to have benefited from the latest treatments, and especially to have been able to count on the healthcare professionals of the CHUM. They saved me and allowed me to continue appreciating every moment of my life. They made, and are still making, an enormous difference for me.” Sandra Van Tassel, patient of the CHUM’s Digestive Surgery Unit, who told her story during the event BENEFIT PREVIEW AT THE 2014 MONTREAL INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW Some 4,500 philanthropists and car enthusiasts helped raise $641,759 at this event held at Montreal’s Palais des Congrès in January. The entire amount was turned over to the Fondation du CHUM to help support the research of Dr. Bernard Lemieux, hemato-oncologist and head of the CHUM’s Lymphoproliferative Disorders Clinic. “When my father died, we went through a difficult time because very little information was available about the disease and support for relatives was virtually non-existent. This is why we decided to change things by getting involved.” Brigitte Laforest SPAGHETTI DAY More than 100 people attended the second annual Jacques Dumulon Spaghetti Day in honour of Mr. Dumulon’s granddaughter. Maryse Dumulon-Morin has been a patient of the CHUM Epilepsy Group and is now cured of the disease thanks to the care provided by Dr. Alain Bouthillier, neurosurgeon, and Dr. Dang Nguyen, neurologist. The initiative by this grateful grandfather from Laval raised $2,000 for the Fondation du CHUM, to go towards research on epilepsy. DJ CHAMPION ALBUM LAUNCH AND FUNDRAISER Maxime Morin, aka DJ Champion, a CHUM patient in remission from blood cancer, used the launch of his latest album as a fundraiser. Donation boxes were set up and the money collected was turned over to Dr. Danielle Charpentier, co-director of the CHUM Integrated Cancerology Centre and the oncologist who treated Maxime in 2010 while he was suffering from lymphoma. FONDATION DU CHUM 2013-2014 ACTIVITY REPORT 27 15 YEARS OF YOUR GENEROSITY What a delight it is to speak to you, dear donors, as I celebrate another year of working with the Fondation du CHUM. The Fondation team has been busy in recent months, and so have I! At the CHUM, I have met with many dedicated professionals, generous volunteers and courageous patients and their relatives who have been through some difficult times. It has always been extremely inspiring. I think especially of Lina Gagnon, who lost her 19-year-old daughter Laura to cystic fibrosis last January. I was deeply moved by our meeting, because, despite her grief and suffering, Lina continues the fight to facilitate organ donations, offering us a great lesson in resilience. I was also very touched when I visited, with Judi, people receiving chemotherapy. We were there because these patients are at the very heart of our cause, and because we were celebrating the Fondation’s 15th anniversary. It made me realize how much each donor, volunteer and professional is making a real difference in her or his own way to the lives of patients. Every gesture helps in giving the best care to the 500,000 patients who pass through the doors of our hospital each year. As the volunteer spokesperson for the Fondation, I am privileged to witness so many acts of kindness. My greatest wish is that, in reading the pages of this report, you will also be bitten by the bug and feel motivated to help the CHUM and its Fondation. This is one bug that should be spread around! I hope that your generosity will be contagious, for the greater benefit of our hospital. It really is very inspiring and we are so extremely grateful to kindhearted donors like you! I had asked for a special gift for the Fondation’s 15th anniversary, and with the record amount raised, as announced in this report, I can say that I got it! Thank you for being at our side for the past 15 years and we hope that you will continue your commitment for the benefit of all those patients to come.
