The theme this year is, “The Master’s Keys: Unlocking the Abundant Life.” This theme speaks to Central’s holistic stewardship initiative and uses John 10:10 as a scriptural anchor: “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” John 10:10 NKJV We call all people to embrace God’s holistic stewardship formula as contained in the four T’s of stewardship: time, treasure, talent, and temple (body). In addition, Central’s initiative calls for one more T, terra. This final T speaks to God’s creation, the stewardship of the land. Together, these powerful elements of stewardship invite all people into a vibrant relationship with God in which we recognize Him as Lord and partner with Him to enlarge His Kingdom throughout Central and beyond. I hope and pray these insights into our camp meeting theme will assist you in your prayerful journey…once again, welcome! Juan 10:10 JOHN 10:10 I CAME THAT THEY MAY HAVE LIFE AND HAVE IT Abundantly Hacemos el llamado a toda nuestra hermandad para acoger la fórmula que Dios nos ha dejado sobre mayordomía holística donde figuran las cuatro T’s: tiempo, tesoro, talento y templo (cuerpo). Ramiro Cano President 3 THE MASTER’S KEYS TR EA SU LE THEME MP LEGEND MEETING ROOMS TENTING AREAS unlocking the abundant life TE R • E his year’s camp meeting theme revolves around the concept of stewardship. While most Christian believers are familiar with stewardship, our time T AMENITIES CABINS TRAILER RV AREAS P PARKING AREA LUNCH TABLES RESTROOM SHOWERS COOK SHACK CASE LOTS FOOD SALES B BURGER BAR FIRST AID ADVENTIST BOOK CENTER MATRESSES at Soquel this year will give us a chance to fully explore this powerful principle that calls us to wise management of life’s God-entrusted resources. To begin our discussion, consider five significant areas of our lives that call us to stewardship: our time, our talents, our treasure, our temple (or body), and our terra (the Latin word for earth). As we respond to Christ’s invitation to use these God-given resources to serve and to enlarge the Kingdom of Heaven, they will become keys to living the full and abundant life that Jesus spoke of long ago. Below are thoughts and questions about each of them as we begin our journey together. Time Perhaps the most universal resource that God created is time. None of us have more or less of it on any given day. And yet many times we take it for granted. How then can we use our time more intentionally, more purposefully to connect with our Creator, to create meaningful experiences and to further the cause of the Kingdom in service? Talent Each of us were created by God as unique individuals. Every one of us possesses God-given talents, skills, interests, passions, spiritual gifts and experiences. When it comes to impacting the world for Christ, each of these unique talents is critical to serving those around us and to inviting them to consider the life-changing message of the Gospel. What unique talents do you possess and have you ever considered 4 them as powerful ways to advance Christ’s Kingdom? Treasure Perhaps the resource most associated with stewardship is money. As the “owner of the cattle on a thousand hills,” the Lord entrusts each person with financial resources to meet the various needs of life. How well we manage and grow those resources has a lot do with how well we can meet our personal and family needs and how effectively we can contribute to the spreading of the transformative Gospel message within our communities. Temple Another God-given resource is our body. Though we do not often think about it in those terms, the state or health of our bodies has tremendous potential for increasing the health of our spiritual life. Scripture refers to our bodies as the temple of the Holy Spirit and the care of our bodies as an “act of worship.” Consider how a healthy, cared-for body empowers you to fully live out Christ’s calling in your life, while serving others. Terra A new addition to our conventional understanding of stewardship, terra refers to the planet on which we live, created by God for us. Scripture recalls God’s instructions to mankind to care for, tend and exercise responsible authority over the earth and its resources. How well are we doing in this area? How effectively and responsibly are we using and preserving earth’s resources to expand the Kingdom of Heaven? Age Specific Program Each division leader spends months prayerfully preparing a program designed specifically for your child. This makes the program more impactful for the child. It also makes it easier for staff to relate to the hundreds of children that come to each division. Please respect the process and truthfully give your child’s age. Yellow Wristband Red Wristband Forgotten Angels Forgotten Angels is exactly that. Due to the hustle and bustle of camp meeting, some children aren’t picked up until very late. This only causes distress to the children and for the staff (who need a break before preparing your child’s next meeting). Fifteen minutes after each children’s program is over, all children not picked up will be taken to the “Forgotten Angels Station,” located at the Children’s Registration Booth after morning and afternoon programs or the Primary Tent after the evening program. If the children are still not picked up, they will be sent to security. Primary: Juniors*: 7 years - 9 years 10 years - 12 years *Juniors may leave without parent pickup Green Wristband Blue Wristband Lost or Broken Wristbands • All wristband replacements happen at the Children’s Registration Booth. • If a wristband must be replaced for any reason, the registration team will replace the first one for free. • Any replaced after the first free band will be charged a $2.00 fee. • If a parent has lost his/her number, then a new band will be replaced after the parent has shown his/her picture identification to the registration team. •Serve Others so Outreach Becomes a Lifestyle It is our prayerful mission that every child will come to know Christ as their personal Savior. He has called each and every one of them. They need to know He is a personal God, who knows and loves them more than anyone else. We long for them to experience His loving and merciful heart, so that they can be transformed into His likeness. This goal doesn’t change at camp meeting. Our leaders spend months in prayerfully planning the programs, asking our Father which stories and activities will best reach each child. The staff builds personal relationships with the children, praying that through their feeble humanness Christ will be revealed. We ask that you join us in this mission. Pray for the children’s meetings or stop by before each meeting and pray with the staff. South Bay Multi-Church Evangelism Life Hope Centers A Closer Look South Bay Evangelism The preparation and training for the Fall 2015 South Bay evangelism meetings has energized members throughout the area to engage with neighbors and new believers. Selma, who serves as the Mountain View Central secretary, is so excited about what she’s learning that each Sabbath evening she takes her son along to deliver Bible study lessons to a neighbor. Meanwhile, Lisa, another member, has started studying the Bible with a new believer in the congregation. A Closer Look Health Clinics Iris, a community resident who attended the Monterey Peninsula clinic came to the medical outreach in her wheelchair. She has been in her chair since she was shot by a stray bullet in a gang-related event. CROSS Trainer Phillippe Buttin began studies with her, only to find out that she had begun studies some time earlier but never finished. She, along with two other clinic guests have since been baptized. Thirteen South Bay churches, including Milpitas, Sunnyvale, Redwood City Hispanic, Mt. View Japanese, and Los Gatos have come together to plan an area-wide evangelistic series featuring Dr. Ron Clouzet, director of the North American Division Evangelism Institute (NADEI). The churches have been involved in various planning stages over the last few months in an attempt to increase effectiveness. The multi-event series includes an Easter series, an apologetic series, and an archaeology series with the main and concluding series beginning on September 11 and running through October 10. The South Bay series comes on the heels of the San Francisco Missions Project, which sought to engage multiple churches and schools in comprehensive ministry. The project resulted in 104 baptisms in San Francisco, thus far. Total Received in Gifts and Pledges: $1,051,326.19 Total Received as of June 18, 2015: $886,960.07 This is the 11th year gifts and pledges have exceeded $1 Million! 28 The Central California Conference has recently launched a new initiative to drive the development of Life Hope Centers. These centers are intended to impact local communities by meeting needs specific to each community. Three CCC areas have already benefited from extensive training and education in how to develop effective ministries. A comprehensive proposal to purchase a three-chair mobile dental clinic (van) to serve the Bay Area has gained significant momentum thanks to the partnership of the Pacific Union, the North American Division and the General Conference. The Life Hope Centers initiative also includes the purchase of a mobile home improvement trailer, which will allow teams of volunteers to take on various charitable home improvement mission projects. Health Clinics Inspired by 2014’s Bridges to Health event, several churches throughout the Central California Conference have organized health fairs and clinics in an effort to serve their surrounding communities, introduce residents to the Seventhday Adventist Church and impact their area for the Kingdom of Heaven. Among those in or near the Bay Area are the Mountain View Japanese and Monterey Peninsula churches. Mountain View’s event, called Smiles 4 Mountain View, served 30 community members with dental and ministry services, while Monterey Peninsula’s clinic served 37 patients, of which seven requested follow-up Bible studies. Three of the guests have already been baptized. 29 “Ten weeks of Youth Rush are done and I must say it has completely changed my life.” —Austin, Youth Rush student Youth Rush A Closer Look Literature Ministries Since 1999, three main channels for literature evangelism have developed – Youth Rush, CROSS training, and GLOW. The common goals of these ministries include leading people to Christ by placing as much spiritually inspiring literature in as many hands as will receive it and providing outreach opportunities for students while earning funds for Adventist education. Literature is one the simplest ways for anyone to share their faith. There are two ways this can be done: by selling it, as the Youth Rush program does; or by giving it away as thousands around the globe do with GLOW tracts. Once the literature is distributed, Bible study requests begin to appear. CROSS Trainers step in to facilitate the Bible studies, while mentoring willing local church members to give their own Bible studies. A Closer Look GLOW GLOW GLOW (Giving Light to Our World) is a ministry born in the Central California Conference that inspires and empowers members to share their faith through short, topical tracts. This past year has seen tremendous growth for GLOW with the General Conference publishing department adopting GLOW as one of its official ministries. In addition, GLOW reached the 50,000,000 printed tract mark! New tracts have been developed including, Why I Go to Church on Saturday, Secrets of Mental Health, and When Freedom Dies. The Adventist World magazine has begun printing GLOW tracts in their magazine as well! Readers are asked to cut out the tract, distribute it, then write in with their story. One such story came back to GLOW of a 70-year-old man in Brazil who cut out the tract, took it to a printing shop and had it copied 2,000 times. He then gave the tracts to 67 churches to distribute! Recently a Korean high school student found a Steps to Health GLOW tract on the ground at school. After he read it, he began to practice the health principles found in the tract and soon lost 20 pounds. When reading the part about trusting in God, he became interested in learning how to pray. He contacted a local Adventist pastor and began to take Bible studies. He is now a baptized Seventh-day Adventist Christian. 30 Literature Ministries Last summer (2014), Brian Pham from the San Jose Vietnamese Church was visiting homes in the Visalia area. Inside one home a woman named Jasmine was on her knees praying when Brian knocked. Jasmine did not answer, hoping whoever it was would leave. Brian persisted in knocking. She finally answered and gave a contribution for four books, including The Great Controversy. Brian offered to pray with her, and prayed for several minutes about the needs she had shared with him. After praying, Brian offered her Bible studies. She accepted, and within a few days CROSS Trainer Noemi Gallegos began studying with her. Ten months later she was baptized. On the day of her baptism, Brian was in attendance. Jasmine said publicly to Brian, “Ever since you knocked on my door my life has never been the same.” She added, “I don’t know if I would have gone to a church and asked for help.” One hundred twenty-nine young people in five groups are visiting nearly 500,000 homes as part of Central’s Youth Rush this summer (2015)—the most ever. The Hmong congregation started ten years ago as a church plant. The group has grown to 90 members. A company is the last step in the process of a congregation becoming an official local church. California has the largest Hmong-American population and over a third live in the Fresno area. Two evangelistic events have been facilitated yielding 15 baptisms. A Hmong language evangelistic television program is now being aired weekly and several GLOW tracts are now translated for distribution among the Hmong community. Local Church Evangelistic Meetings Forty-six public evangelism meetings funded by the evangelism offering have been hosted throughout Central since last year’s camp meeting. Meetings were held by Conference 32 Evangelist Taj Pacleb, along with associate evangelists Antonio Cano, Anil Kanda, Ivor Myers, and Howard Tello, in addition to guest evangelists. To date, SALBA has graduated 250 students, who have facilitated 300 ongoing Bible studies and have formed over 50 small groups in and around the Bay Area, together with other current students. A Closer Look Public Evangelism Bakersfield Central approached public evangelism with a new twist. While hosting a series with Taj Pacleb, series organizers ran simultaneous evangelistic series focusing on adults, teens and children. The simultaneous series resulted in 35 baptisms and 9 decisions for further study. English Women’s Retreat In 2015, over 500 women gathered for the 18th annual Women’s Retreat, about 100 of whom were not members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. This year, CCC women reflected on the idea of being “Redeemed,” as they pondered how God paid the price for each of them in His kingdom. Additionally, free personal counseling was a well received first-time offer during the weekend. For some, Camp Wawona offers a chance to hear the gospel for the first time and to learn about the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Every year, summer camp scholarships are provided for campers from the Bay Area who are not members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. This year, more than 30 Bay Area scholarships have been awarded! Youth Evangelism Team (YET) YET members have crisscrossed CCC territory over the last year training, inspiring, educating and facilitating opportunities for spiritual growth and decisions for Christ. Highlights from this year include an online Friday night Bible study, a three-week intensive at the Modesto Central church, assisting with a student-led week of prayer at Monterey Bay 34 Fifty-five guys ages 13-17 gathered from across the state for the CCC Guys’ Retreat 2015 featuring guest speaker Larry Graack, enrollment director at Pacific Union College. Using this year’s theme “Crossfit,” Graack shared that believers can be fit to carry their cross because of Jesus’ sacrifice and His promises. “It’s powerful to see over 50 guys that are supposed to be ‘too cool’ to worship singing with such sincerity,” says our conference youth director Andrew Uyeyama. The weekend included many physical fitness challenges as well as a trip to the Año Nuevo State Park where they walked throughout the park to see the giant elephant seals near the beach. While sharing and bonding with each other, attendees listened attentively while guides spoke of the elephant seal’s evolution. The teens took this opportunity to share with other park-goers about how God created the animals. During each of the four meetings, Uyeyama along with Matt Morgan, one of the retreat organizers and Tom Gearing, youth pastor of Fresno Sunnyside delivered what they called “man talk.” Topics included how to respectfully talk to a girl in a way that lifts her up, even in giving a proper handshake. These and other topics gave teens practical lessons on how to be a man of God in every day life, and how being a man of God permeates even the small things. “I was really impressed with how the guys got along so well. They all seemed to be there for the right reasons,” said one parentchaperone. By the end of the weekend many of the guys had committed or recommitted their lives to Jesus and were inspired to be godly men. The YET members met her at her high school’s basketball game. Jaira participated in a number of YET activities, eventually signing up for TBA and getting baptized, along with her parents. Struggling to decide between attending TBA or a summer basketball program, Jaira concluded, “God is always #1 in my heart,” and attended! Teen Bible Academy (TBA) TBA has experienced explosive growth this year. While the highest historical enrollments have involved around 60 teens, and the last few years have averaged 40 or so, this year TBA has enrolled 91 teens! Extra staff members (a total of 26) have been brought in to manage the extraordinarily large group. TBA is a three-week program that provides evangelistic training for teens who are not able to attend a longer training program such as ARISE, AFCOE, Mission College, or Souls West. Teen Girls’ Retreat Two hundred and eighteen girls from across the Central California Conference gathered together for a weekend of prayer, learning, and fun at Teen Girls’ Retreat 2015. Guest speaker Ruth Rivera introduced this year’s theme “I Am__.” by telling the story of the world’s loneliest whale, tying it in with the fact that Jesus always hears and understands our song even when other’s don’t, ending with the affirmation “I Am Valued.” Sabbath morning, the girls attended breakout sessions on topics such as toxic relationships, human/ sex trafficking, anxiety, inner beauty, and maintaining a personal relationship with God. For the church service, Rivera shared a compelling message on accepting God’s invitation to follow Him entitled “I Am Chosen.” That afternoon, four stations paved the way for their journey to the top of the hill. Girls learned what it’s like to carry real life burdens such as inadequacy, guilt, shame, and loneliness, discovered their spiritual gifts, learned the importance of priorities, and learned that Jesus is the only one who can completely blot out sins. Saturday night’s meeting proved to be life-changing as speaker Ruth Rivera shared her testimony “I Am His.” Tears were shed and hearts were touched as girls shared their testimonies of God’s saving power in their lives through cardboard testimonies on stage. “It was a powerful and moving experience,” reflects Elizabeth Pombo, YET audio-visual coordinator, “to see how these girls have changed or how they are now working on changing their view of themselves, now that they are focusing more on Jesus.” A Closer Look Teen Bible Academy While enjoying God’s remarkable creation, TBA students are taught how to spend meaningful time with God in prayer and Bible study.
