Backstreet boy Howie D
steps out on his own
GARY GRAFF
NYT SYNDICATE
OWIE Dorough isn’t
the most popular
Backstreet Boy, and
he knows it. He
doesn’t have the
youthful charisma of Nick Carter
or the blond-bombshell looks of
either Carter or Brian Littrell, let
alone the bad-boy appeal of AJ
McLean. All the same, Dorough
considers himself “the glue within the guys,” the Backstreet Boys’
rock who is a solid, steady and
comforting face for the group.
He’s not the only one who
thinks so. Carter once called
Dorough “the man in the
Backstreet Boys,” and more than
one observer has noted that,
when the Boys do their trademark walk into the audience to
bring female fans back onstage,
Dorough’s choice is likely to be
the least physically attractive of
the bunch.
With that kind of team spirit,
then, it’s not surprising that
when Dorough’s first solo album,
Back to Me, came out in
November, it had been a full five
years in the making – and not
because the singer spent that
much time in the studio.
“I never wanted to make the
group stop for my individual
project,”
the
38-year-old
Dorough explains, speaking by
telephone from his home in
Cocoa Beach, Florida “I was
working on and off, between
breaks from our tours and
recording and whatever we were
doing. But after fans kept saying,
‘Howie, when’s it coming? Come
on, is it really coming or not?,’ I
really put my head to it and knew
I had to finish my record.”
Back to Me came out rather
different, however, from the
album Dorough had been talking
about for much of those five
years.
Early on Dorough, the son of a
Puerto Rican mother and an
Irish-American father, spoke
about exploring his Latin roots,
working with the likes of Jon
Secada and Wayne Rodriguez
and even singing in Spanish.
Back to Me doesn’t sound much
different than the average
Backstreet Boys album, however,
which Dorough says was ultimately by design.
“Initially I was kind of going in
a more Latin direction,” the
singer says. “I wanted to do
something totally different than
Backstreet Boys and explore my
Latin roots, which I’m very proud
of. But when I finally put my head
into finishing this, I started doing
some soul-searching and asked,

The cover of Howie Dorough’s album Back To Me.
Backstreet Boys have an international
fan base, and fans love what we do.
I didn’t want to be one of those artistes
who does something so totally different
that people would ask, ‘Why did he do
that?’ Is he not proud?’”
‘Is this the right direction for
me?’ Backstreet Boys have an
international fan base, and fans
love what we do. I didn’t want to
be one of those artistes that does
something so totally different
that people would ask, ‘Why did
he do that?’ Is he not proud?’”
I’m very proud of being a
Backstreet Boy, so why stray too
far from the mold?”
That mold, of course, has been
very good to Dorough and his
bandmates since 1993, when the
Backstreet Boys came together in
Orlando, Florida. Dorough is a
native Orlandan and had been
bitten by the performance bug at
an early age, thanks to the proximity of Walt Disney World and
Universal Orlando Resort. He
met McLean first, and the two
caught the attention of manager
Lou Pearlman, who held auditions that brought in Carter,
Littrell and his cousin, Kevin
Richardson.
Dorough also had recruited a
fellow aspiring singer named
Chris Kirkpatrick, but he wound
up joining the rival N Sync
instead.
Taking their name from
Orlando’s Backstreet flea market,
the quintet started out performing in shopping malls and high
schools. After signing a deal with
Jive Records, however, the band
had its first success in Europe
before bringing its self-titled
debut album to the US in 1996.
Backstreet Boys sold a combined
24 million copies worldwide and
launched hits such as Quit
Playing Games and I’ll Never
Break Your Heart. That set the
table for Millennium, which had
first-week American sales of
more than 1.1 million copies and
went on to sell more than 30 million globally. All told, the
Backstreet Boys have sold more
than 130 million albums and singles worldwide and won innumerable awards.
“It’s so much more than we
ever imagined,” Dorough says.
“When we started, you could be a
star, but there had been nothing
really that huge except maybe
Michael Jackson. It wasn’t even
in the realm of imagination, you
know?”
The group’s sales declined as
the boy-band craze waned, but
Dorough and his mates have
kept the Backstreet Boys going,
touring regularly and releasing
new albums, most recently This
Is Us (2009). Though all the
members have outside interests
as well – Dorough has a management-and-production company, and played guest roles on
such shows as Roswell (2000)
and Sabrina, the Teenage Witch
(2002), and started the Dorough
Lupus Foundation after his sister Caroline died from the disease – Dorough is clear that the
band remains a growing concern, and will for the foreseeable
future.
“We just love doing it,” he says.
“We all get along well, we love
working together, we love performing, we love the fans. We’re
smart enough to know that what
happened early on wouldn’t last.
You can’t sustain that level of
success forever. But we have
great fans and we’re always able
to go out and tour and do well.
We’re really blessed.” And they’re
not dumb.
Meanwhile Dorough hopes
that his solo project, which he’s
promoted by opening for a few
concerts by Britney Spears, will
get its due. Moving away from
idea of crooning in Spanish –
which, he admits, “I really don’t
speak very well” – Dorough
opted instead to “push the tempo
a little bit, get into more
European dance stuff and also
the Backstreet Boys’ signature
sound in the slower songs.”
In fact, originally he had
pitched three of the songs –
Dominoes, Over My Head and
Shatterproof – for This Is Us, but
they didn’t make the cut. Nor did
Pure, which Carter and Dorough
had co-written. When it was
decided that Pure didn’t fit on
This Is Us, Dorough pounced.
“I said, ‘Dude, I want to keep
this for my record,”’ he recalls.
“And (Carter) was excited for
me. There’s nothing better than
to have the support of your own
guys for something you’re
doing.”
The album’s first two singles, the up-tempo 100 and
the ballad Lie to Me, were by
other writers, but that didn’t
bother Dorough, he says.
“I’ve definitely always
been open-minded to having songs written by other
people,” he says, “whether
it’s Backstreet Boys or my own
thing. I’m a firm believer in
writing your own record, because
you definitely have that personal
attachment, that personal input
to it. But, at the same time, I’m
not shy of giving credit to someone else who can write a song
better than me.”

Paltrow is face of new Hugo Boss fragrance
Not too raunchy for younger fans, says Minaj
ACTRESS Gwyneth Paltrow has signed up to become the face of Hugo
Boss’ new fragrance, Nuit Pour Femme. “To me, the Boss woman is driven,
ambitious and goes after what she wants, but she balances being strong
and very feminine,” contactmusic.com quoted her as saying. The 39-yearold will be appearing in TV, print and online campaigns for the fragrance.
RAPPER Nicki Minaj has hit back at the criticism that she is too sexual
for some of her younger fans saying she does not push her raunchy side
in her music and videos. “That’s not what I’m about at all. I’m no different from any other girl out there in that way. I’m all about rapping, writing and acting - nothing else,” showbizspy.com quoted Minaj as saying.

Dolphins work with fishermen in Brazil to catch fish
Environment
guide
A VISITOR might stumble upon a strange sight in Laguna, Brazil, if they went down to the shore. Here, the local fishermen
rely on dolphins to help them with their yearly fish catch. New research has found that just one local group of about 20 dolphins work with the fishermen, while the other local dolphins don’t co-operate, finding other sources of food. The researchers
aren’t sure what separates these groups. Scientists had known that dolphins work together to herd groups of mullet, a fish
that’s an important source of food for local fishermen, toward a line of fishermen in boats or knee-deep water. Then the dolphins signal with specialised head or tail slaps when and where the fishermen should throw their nets. The co-operation is
helpful to both parties, researchers said. The two wouldn’t survive without each other. “About 200 local artisanal fishermen
are almost entirely reliant on the dolphins for catching their fish,” study researcher Fabio Daura-Jorge, of the Federal University
of Santa Catarina, in Brazil said. “The fishermen do not fish without the assistance of the dolphins and know the individual
animals from their natural marks and can recognise them by eye.” Daura-Jorge added, “The fishermen have names for the
cooperative dolphins — particular stars in this cooperation are ‘Scooby’ and ‘Caroba,’ that co-operate for more than 15 years.”

Eagle repository struggles to
keep up with tribes’ needs
DAN FROSCH
NYT SYNDICATE
ILES from downtown
Denver, in a small warehouse on the city’s edge,
Bernadette
Atencio
watched as two men
methodically bundled piles of dead
eagles into boxes, careful to include
enough frozen gel packs so the remains
would not thaw.
“This one’s going to Prescott,”
Atencio said, nodding toward one bird
tightly parceled in plastic. “That one’s
going to Pendleton.”
Despite appearances, this was not
some surreptitious animal-smuggling
ring. It was a typical Wednesday at the
National Eagle Repository, the only
place where American Indians can
legally obtain bald and golden eagles
from the federal government for traditional ceremonies.
Through a series of federal acts dating to the 1940s, bald and golden
eagles have been fiercely protected. It is
illegal to hunt the birds and also to collect feathers or eagle parts without the
proper permit.
So, for more than 30 years, this US
Fish and Wildlife Service programme
has been shipping thousands of eagle
carcasses and parts to American
Indians, who view the animal as
sacred.
But a growing backlog of applications, and a slew of recent court battles
over when American Indians can lawfully obtain eagles on their own, has
raised questions about whether the
repository is sufficient.
Currently, tribal members seeking an
immature golden eagle, the most coveted bird, must wait about four and a half
years. The waiting time for a bald eagle
is two years. Despite the efforts by the
Wildlife Service to ship animals as
swiftly as possible, the waiting
list has swelled to more than
6,000 applications.
“More and more of our
young people are going
back to our spiritual
way of life, and we
can’t do our ceremonies without the
eagles,” said Lee
Plenty Wolf, an
Oglala Sioux who
lives in Fort
Collins,
and
received a bald
eagle on April
26 after waiting
for
almost three
years.
T h e
Federal
law, however, forbids
anyone without a specialised permit
who finds a
dead eagle or
eagle
feathers
from taking them.
Each week on an average,
the
repository
receives dozens of dead
eagles or parts sent from
across the country by the
state and federal wildlife officers. Some have died naturally; others were roadkill or
electrocuted by power
lines.
But with 4,500 requests
coming in each year, the
repository simply does not
have enough eagles, said
Atencio, who supervises the
warehouse, in an old Army
maintenance building.
“It’s a supply and demand

Having to wait
so long to use eagles
in religious ceremonies
has become a source of
frustration for many tribes.
“Eagles are sacred to us, so of course
we are interested in the eagle protection,” said Melissa Holds the Enemy, a
lawyer for the Crow tribe in Montana.
“But there is a huge disconnect that is
not being addressed. Protecting eagles
and accommodating Indian religious
freedoms do not need to conflict with
one another.”
Driven by the delays, the Crow have
been fashioning a plan to present to
Fish and Wildlife officials that would
allow tribal members with permits to
keep
dead
eagles found
on tribal land.
D a n
A s h e ,
director of
the Fish
and Wildlife
Service, said
in an email
that the agency
was especially sensitive to American Indians’
religious needs and recently
streamlined the application process
to reduce wait times.
Ashe also cited a special programme that has, in recent years,
allowed five tribes to keep eagles too
injured to be released in the wild. The
tribes are permitted to distribute naturally molted feathers for ceremonial
use, but cannot kill the birds.
“We understand the importance of
eagles to the religious beliefs of tribal
members, and we are committed to
doing everything we can, within the
boundaries of federal law and our mandate to ensure healthy eagle popula-

tions in the wild, to improve tribes’
access to eagles for religious purposes,”
he said.
Debate over the issue has also played
out in courtrooms of late. In 2005, a
Northern Arapaho man, Winslow
Friday, was arrested after killing a bald
eagle on tribal land. Friday’s lawyer,
John Carlson, argued that the repository’s wait time was intolerably long and
that when birds were sent to the tribe,
they were often too badly burned or
decomposed for use.
A federal judge in Wyoming, William
F Downes, dismissed the charge
against Friday. But the 10th US Circuit
Court of Appeals, in Denver, overturned the ruling. Friday eventually
pleaded guilty in tribal court and paid a
$2,500 fine.
In March, the Fish and Wildlife
Service granted the Northern Arapaho
a permit to “take,” or kill, two bald
eagles for religious purposes. The tribe,
which initially applied for the permit
more than two years ago, had filed a
federal lawsuit in 2011 saying the
process was taking too long.
Applications for such permits are rare.
On March 30, a lawyer for the
Northern Arapaho filed an amended
complaint in federal court calling the
permit “a sham” because it forced the
tribe to obtain the eagles off its reservation, which left tribal members subject
to prosecution under state law.
According to Jerome Ford, assistant
director of the Fish and Wildlife
Service’s migratory bird programme, a
joint tribal statute between the Eastern
Shoshone tribe and the Northern
Arapaho, who share the Wind River
Reservation, prohibits the taking of
eagles on the actual reservation.
The permit was “the only option that
did not create a conflict” between the
two tribes, he said.
As that case continues, Fish and
Wildlife Department officials planned
to meet this summer with tribal governments to figure out ways to speed
the process for receiving eagle feathers.
“This is an issue across all tribal
nations,” said Myron Pourier, who sits
on the executive board for the Oglala
Sioux tribe in South Dakota, which
hopes to build its own eagle repository.
“All of them are going through the
same federal red tape when they
shouldn’t be. Especially when this is a
part of our way of life.”

JK Rowling’s first novel for adults will be ‘blackly comic’
Books
guide
JK Rowling’s first book for adults will be a “blackly comic” novel set in an idyllic English town where all is not what it seems, its publisher said recently. The
title of the closely guarded 480-page novel by the prolific Harry Potter author will be The Casual Vacancy. It and will be available worldwide in English on
September 27 in hardback, e-book and in audio form, Little, Brown and Company said in a statement. The publisher promised it will be “blackly comic,
thought-provoking and constantly surprising,” and offered some general plot details. Rowling’s foray into the adult fiction world begins when a character
called Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly, leaving a town called Pagford in shock, before readers will realise that behind Pagford’s facade is a town at war,
according to the publisher. “Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils...
Pagford is not what it first seems,” said the statement. “And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war
the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations?” When the novel was first announced in
February, Rowling, 46 said the successful Harry Potter series had given her the “the freedom to explore new territory.” The seven-book series sold 450 million copies worldwide and resulted in eight top-grossing movies. The Casual Vacancy is the British writer’s first novel directly aimed at the adult market.

Advaita Kala
A poster of the film Kahaani
Bollywood must give women more
space, says Kahaani writer Advaita
Kala, whose novel speaks
for the power of
30-something single
working women in India
through the genre of ‘chick
lit’, says ‘women must
have better representation
in Bollywood’
MADHUSHREE CHATTERJEE
IANS
HE film Kahaani, for which
she wrote the story, grossed
Rs54.55 crore. Advaita Kala,
also considered a pioneer of
India’s chick lit genre, says
women are also heroes and need a better representation in Bollywood.
“A woman cannot be used as a commodity and cast in a certain mould. The
hero needs to acknowledge the heroine
because women are also heroes. The
gender-sensitive mindsets in Indian
cinema will have to go,” Kala said in an
interview citing Kahaani as an example.
It isn’t surprising that she struck the
right chord with the story of a pregnant
Vidya Bagchi looking for her husband
on the streets of Kolkata in Kahaani as
she had wooed readers with her maiden
novel Almost Single in 2009. It had
reportedly sold more than 100,000
copies.
Kala, whose novel speaks for the
power of 30-something single working
women in India through the genre of
“chick lit”, says “women must have better representation in Bollywood. A perfect heroine is one who can express her
sexuality.”
Now she is set woo television audiences and says the script of her serial is
unusual.
“It was a great experience conceiving
the story of Kahaani, but now I am
looking forward to scripting for a new
television serial. I hate looking back,”
Kala said.
“The concept of the television script I
am working on is very unusual. The
producers are backing the right kind of
script. It is creeping in - the ability to
think out of the box,” she added.
The young writer rates the new movie
scripts in Bollywood high on the cre-
T
Vidya Balan in a scene from the film Kahaani.
ative scale and said, “The scripts now
are very interesting.”
Although director Sujoy Ghosh’s
movie Kahaani turned the economics
of the box office by running to packed
houses for more than four weeks and
earning Rs54.55 crore, the writer votes
Pan Singh Tomar as “the best movie of
the year”.
As far as Kahaani is concerned, she
said: “I had met Sujoy Ghosh around
2009 and he encouraged me to conceive
the movie.” But now she slams the lid
firmly back on the Kahaani experience
saying the future was more important
and wants to put Kahaani behind.
Kala does not find travelling across
genres difficult, including “participatory journalism”.
“I do the same things. I create characters and dialogues in scripts. My books
have a lot of dialogue as well. It is basically how it reaches the audience. The
genres are pretty much the same. I am a
storyteller,” she said.
The writer almost completed working
on her new novel, which is not chick lit.
She has set up a book club for power
women, which will meet this week to
“discuss a gamut of issues from literature to gender”. As an author, issues of
copyright occupy Kala more than anything else.
“The copyright laws for writers in this
country needs to change. Writers need
to be empowered and contracts need to
be looked into. I know government
lawyers are working on it,” Kala, who is
in her early 30s, said.
The fact that writers are often at the
receiving end of the publishing chain
has a lot to do with the literary culture,
the writer-scriptwriter said.
“The writer and the content creator
has to be looked upon in a more
favourable light. Lyricist and poet
Javed Akhtar’s campaign for change in
the copyright structure to protect
authors and performers needs to be
applauded,” added .
She, however, refused to comment on
whether she had faced any copyrightrelated issues.

Lopez gets royal treatment from beau
Lohan takes up spiritual chanting
ACTRESS Jennifer Lopez’s boyfriend Casper Smart is so fond
of her that he tries to provide the best of everything to her.
“He treats her like a queen. Casper centres everything on
Jennifer,” people.com quoted a source as saying. “But her
family worries that Casper will take advantage of her. She
has fallen so hard,” the source added. Lopez has been married thrice - she first married a restaurant waiter Ojani Noa.
After parting ways from him, she exchanged vows with
dancer Chris Judd. The 42-year-old separated from her third
husband, Marc Anthony, in July last year.
ACTRESS Lindsay Lohan has decided to put her troubles behind her
and has started spiritual chanting, says her friend Courtney Love. Love,
who has practised Nichiren Buddhism since 1990, has revealed that
Lohan is a member of an all-female group which meets at her house to
practise spiritual chanting. “She comes to my house to chant. Seven
women come to chant on Friday. It’s a women’s group. She’s coming to
chant, which is good for her,” dailystar.co.uk quoted Love as saying.
“You can tell when I’m not doing it, I get in trouble and then when I
am doing it, I don’t get in trouble. It’s really, really good for me. So,
that’s my religion,” she added.

In an era that seems made for sexy bloodsuckers
with six-pack abs - TV’s True Blood and The Vampire
Diaries as well as the Twilight movies - Depp and
Burton took an opposite approach. They hark back
to the 1970s with a tongue-in-cheek homage to the
original TV show that, among its many storylines,
told of a vampire in a dark and never-ending search
for his long-ago love, Josette.
“Tim and I talked early on: a vampire should look
like a vampire,” Depp told reporters recently. “It was
a rebellion against vampires that looked like underwear models.”
Depp plays well-dressed, well-heeled vampire
Barnabas Collins who is turned into an otherworldly

Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green), a witch who then

Gloria Estefan
Depp said he used to watch the TV show when he
was a boy and always dreamed of bringing it to the
big screen. It wasn’t until he and Burton worked
together on the macabre musical Sweeney Todd: The
Demon Barber of Fleet Street that Depp discovered
Burton also was a fan of the show. There was no
question that Dark Shadows would be yet another
collaboration. Yet rather than creating an updated
version set in present day, Depp and Burton set their
sights on the 1970s, and let the eccentricities of that
era crash with Barnabas’ 18th Century comfort zone.
“I wanted Barnabas to come across as ... this very
elegant upper echelon, well-schooled gentleman
who’s cursed in the 18th century and brought back to
probably the most surreal era of our time - the 1970s
- and how he would react to things,” said Depp.
“Not just with technology and automobiles and
such, but actual items of enjoyment for people like
pet rocks, fake flowers, plastic fruit, troll dolls, lava
lamps and the macramé owls.”
Staying true to the original TV show was important, too. Dark Shadows screenwriter Seth
Grahame-Smith studied DVDs of the series, books
written about the characters and the plot lines.
At his first meeting with Depp and Burton,
Grahame-Smith recalls Depp pantomiming the vampire’s movements, while Burton was suggesting that
Barnabas’ fingers need be one joint longer.
“A lot was born in those early meetings,” he said.
“What I needed to know about the tone, I relied on
them because they were there watching the shows as
kids and loving the show. They still have that knowledge of it and that love for it.” So much love in fact,
that as Depp began exploring different ideas for
playing Barnabas, he decided “it had to be rooted” in
original actor Jonathan Frid’s stoic portrayal of the
vampire. Depp called Frid’s version of Collins a “classic monster,” reminiscent of the types found in horror magazine Fangoria coupled with “a kind of rigidity to him - that pull up the back, this elegance that
was always there.” If anyone appreciated Depp’s take
on Collins, it was Frid himself, who died last month
at age 87. “He had written me a letter a couple of
years before and signed a photograph to me - that
sort of passing the baton to Barnabas - which I
thought was very sweet,” said Depp, recalling that
Frid also brought his original Barnabas cane for the
cameo. Burton described that day of shooting as “like
having the Pope come visit ... part of the reason we
were there is because those people inspired us.”

How Anil Kapoor prepares for a character
When Shah Rukh played a race driver
ACTOR Anil Kapoor finds it tough to describe his way of preparing for
a character and says it’s a mix of lot of things. “I am not one of those
who can really express the way I prepare for a character. How I work
on my character is very instinctive and very organic. Everybody has a
very different way of working on their character,” the 52-year-old said
at the launch of author Hussain Zaidi’s book Dongri to Dubai. “It’s
research and instinct and how I feel, it’s a part of my personality
also. It’s a mixture of so many things,” he added. Anil is currently
shooting for Shootout at Wadala where he plays ACP Isaque
Bagwan, while Race 2 also has him in the role of a police officer. He
was recently seen in Tezz as an anti-terrorism officer.
SUPERSTAR Shah Rukh Khan unveiled a range of limited edition Tag Heuer watches along with Formula One driver Karun
Chandok and recalled his role as a race driver in Baazigar.
“Strangely, when I started off many years ago in a film of mine,
Baazigar, I was supposed to be a Formula One car driver
though I don’t think it was a Formula One racing car,” the 46year-old said. “It was really difficult and I said that I am going
to do the shot myself. I thought it was going really fast but the
speed was just 40 to 50 kilometres but it just seemed very
fast,” he added. Shah Rukh’s is currently shooting for Yash Raj’s
untitled film with Katrina Kaif.

ANDANA Sen says that her character of
Radha in Ashvin Kumar’s The Forest, is
the oldest she has ever played and one
which is “silk and steel”, displaying both a
sharp tongue and a soft heart.
The Forest is an ecological thriller which deals
with the dynamics of human relationships against
the dangerous and wild background of a forest. The
plot of the story revolves around a couple who meet
the wife’s ex-lover while on vacation in a forest. They
are also haunted by the presence of a man-eating
leopard in the background.
“In The Forest I played a character much older
than any role I’ve ever been cast in till date. I incorporated into Radha a great deal of interiority and
maturity - sharp-tongued but soft-hearted, confident yet fragile, Radha is all silk and steel.
Honestly, I would not play her any differently were I to play the same role
now,” said Nandana, known for

her role as Rani Mukherji’s 17-year-old sister in
Sanjay Bhansali’s Black.
The cast includes Javed Jaafri and Ankur Vikal.
Ashvin Kumar’s films are always based on serious
messages and themes. His previous works include
Little Terrorist, Inshallah Kashmir and Inshallah
Football. His characters often hold metaphorical significance and this is true for Nandana’s character as
well.
“Ashvin’s film has a powerful message about the
environment. If we destroy our wildlife and natural
resources, we will have to pay with our lives. And we
will lose that fight, because even all the trappings of
culture can never add up to the raw power and glory
of nature,” she added while talking about the subject
of the film.
The Bengali diva seemed to have mastered the art
of looking glamourous. In fact she has recently
become the brand ambassador for designer Ritu
Kumar.
“I loved working with Ritu and Label, the line she
created for The Forest shows a great combination of
casual practicality and ethnic elegance,” she said.
Priyanka in awe of Aradhana
in Teri Meri Kahaani
IANS
CTRESS Priyanka Chopra, who plays three different roles
in Teri Meri Kahaani, is excited about her character
Punjabi Aradhana and reveals that she has added a personal touch to the role.
“I wanted Aradhana to be very Punjabi-spoken, so I have
used a very Punjabi accent, a few words in Punjabi where she
speaks. I wanted her language to be influenced by Punjabi, so
hopefully that’s come across,” said Priyanka in a statement.
Her character of Aradhana belongs to the year 1910 and the
actress is in awe of the particular look in the film, which has
been designed by Manish Malhotra.
“When we were doing the research for 1910, the most
interesting thing was the look of 1910, specially around
Lahore, the Punjab-Pakistan border. Over there the ladies
would dress up with the dupattas on their heads, very delicate jewellery and a lot of phulkari, so Manish Malhotra
made sure that the clothes were very authentic and
colours were very Indian and very bright at the same
time,” she added.
The film, directed by Kunal Kohli, also features
Shahid Kapoor and is slated for a June 22 release.
