Pastor’s Notebook - October 26, 2014
Fr. Brian and I have been slowly walking us through each part of the Mass, explaining more deeply the
meaning of the words and actions so as to give us a greater understanding and appreciation of what we
pray and celebrate. This week we move into the Liturgy of the Word and the profound power of Sacred
Scripture.
Ever since Jesus sent out his disciples with the great commission: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of
all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,” the Church
has sought in every age and time to fulfill Jesus’ command.
In case you haven’t yet heard, we now have a Catholic radio station in Olympia. Yes, KGY 1240 AM, which
was originally begun by the monks at St. Martin’s, is now part of the Sacred Heart Radio group. With the
help of some former parishioners, we began searching for a way to make the Catholic message heard
and known throughout this region. After almost three years of efforts, we can now listen to daily 24/7
Catholic programing. Check out the Sacred Heart Radio website at www.sacredheartradio.org for more
information. It is our hope that we can begin to do some local programing. If you have any expertise and/
or interest in something like this, please contact myself or Ralph Shawver at the office.
Another evangelistic tool is the Northwest Catholic Magazine and website. This monthly magazine is
sent free (funded through the Annual Catholic Appeal and advertisers) to every registered household in
the Archdiocese. They are conducting a readership survey. I encourage you to take some time and go
to www.nwcatholic.org. In the upper right hand corner is the link to the online survey. I did it and it only
takes about five minutes, depending on how much you want to comment. This will be helpful in suggesting ideas you would like to see in the future.
This coming weekend we celebrate All Hollow’s Eve, All Saints Day, and All Souls. We begin with our annual “Treats in the Trunk” activity down in front of St. Michael Parish School. Because of the new covered
play area, even if it rains, there will be plenty of shelter to show off saint costumes, collect candy and
treats, as well as enjoy cider, corn dogs, and prizes. If you want to have a display, please contact Leanne
Bergford at the office and come and set up at 4:30 p.m. Festivities begin at 5:00 p.m. and we go home
at 6:30 p.m. Please join us for a safe and holy evening of fun.
Saturday, November 1st is the Feast of All Saints. Because it falls on a Saturday, it is not a Holy Day of
Obligation. Nonetheless, we will have 9:00 a.m. Mass in the main church Downtown to celebrate.
Saturday evening, November 1st at 6:30 p.m. we will celebrate Evening Prayer for the Dead, remembering especially all those who have been buried from Saint Michael Parish as well as all those who have
died this past year. Please plan on joining us. This is a peaceful and moving time of remembrance and
healing.
Sunday is All Souls Day and you are invited to write the names of those who have died this past year
in our Book of Remembrance as well as bring a picture of deceased loved ones for our altar of remembrance.
Our Catholic faith is rich in prayer that speaks to the deepest places of our heart and soul. Let us delve
deeply these coming days.
In Christ, I love you,
Due to the Feast of All Saints, the first Saturday blessing and annointing of the sick will be on Nov. 8th.

Stewardship
“You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” Jesus advises the Pharisees and others who are listening to Him.
This was in answer to a “trick” question posed to him by
a lawyer among the Pharisees. The questioner wanted
the Lord to give a response that might appear to lessen
other commandments. Instead, Jesus points out that
there are some commandments from our God that
are greater than our traditional Ten Commandments.
“You shall love the Lord your God, with all your heart,
with all your soul, and with all your mind.” We are first
called to that relationship with God, a relationship which
acknowledges God’s love of us, and results in our own
love of the Lord. That is where stewardship must begin
with each of us — through developing a loving bond with
God. However, Jesus then explains to us how we must
relate to one another: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Many misinterpret Christ’s admonition to mean that we
must love ourselves first. He was not saying that we must love ourselves before we love anyone else. He was saying nonetheless that our focus as stewards needs to be on serving and loving others. The good steward respects,
regards, and loves others as he or she might expect to be treated. Love and stewardship are very much the same
— each strives to put others before our own interests.

This weekend is the World Mission Sunday collection.
This is one way that we, as a parish, can all recommit
ourselves to the missionary activities of the Church, benefiting those who live in environments and under conditions most of us could hardly imagine. Participating in
World Mission Sunday is one way our parish and families
can live out this call to work for the common good of all
humankind.
We will send 10% of our offertory collection to the archdiocese’s Missions Office in support of this world-wide
annual effort.
Don’t forget - Daylight Savings Time ends at 2:00 am on November 2nd!

Heavenly Highlights
A summary of our Ministry Meetings in October 2014
Provided by the St. Michael Parish Pastoral Council
Overview
All of our Councils and Commissions begin their meetings with prayer. This year, we are using Lectio Divina for all
meetings in the Parish. In this prayer format, we listen to the Gospel for the coming Sunday and prayerfully share our
reflections with each other.
Pastoral Council – October 18, 2014: Our members reviewed the Evaluation Forms turned in at the end of Leadership
Day in September. Many positive comments were received. We brainstormed ways to continue our work with Councils
and Commission around the Membership Engagement 25 Questions (ME25), which is the focus of our parish this coming
year. The Council members will be reading the book “Forming Intentional Disciples” in the next two months as part of
our focused priority in the ME25 area.
Finance Council – October 15, 2014: Ralph Shawver, Steward for Time, Talen and Treasure was our visitor and gave
us an update on our Stewardship of Treasure Renewal, which begins in November 2014. A visitor from the Spiritual Life
& Worship Commission gave us an update on the Eucharistic Congress and confirmed our commitment to be in charge of
the registration table that day. We reviewed the monthly financials. We currently are experiencing a shortfall in Sunday
Offertory income, which is offset a bit by a reduction in expenses. Parish staff is preparing an Annual Report to the
Parish and Fr. Jim is giving an oral report at the Westside Chapel on the weekend of October 18/19 and downtown on
October 25/26.
Stewardship Council – October 16, 2014: We added five new members to our eight member Council and learned a bit
about the varied skills that each members brings to our work. We reviewed the statistics thus far in our ongoing “JustOne”
Time & Talent campaign. We also discussed the upcoming annual Stewardship of Treasure renewal that will take place
during November and how the Council can help instill the Stewardship message deeper into the life of the parish. Father
Jim shared his philosophy of Stewardship as a way of life.
Vietnamese Commission – October 4, 2014: On October 12 – Prior to the start of Mass at 1:30, there will be a
special celebration for the traveling Our Lady of LaVang statue. Included will be Rosary and prayer. Our New Year TET
Mass will be celebrated with the entire St. Michael Parish community at the 11:30 am Mass on Sunday, February 15, 2015.
The renewal of Stewardship of Treasure will happen at our November 9 Mass.
Spiritual Life & Worship Commission – October 9: Michelle Clinton provided information about our focus for the
upcoming year. Our parish council liaison reviewed our Membership Engagement-25 Questions history and current
initiatives. The Commission completed the Engagement Plan for 2014-5. Brian Barkis will be our Point Person for
SLWC. Our work on the 2015 Eucharistic Congress continues and we finalized speakers, recruitment of help from other
ministries and dates for sign-ups.
School Commission– September 22, 2014: There was a general discussion regarding the vision of making Catholic
school accessible to all Catholic families. The principal provided a report on the school’s progress on several of the
archdiocese “from Strength to Strength” strategic initiatives and we are making progress in all areas. Currently,
enrollment is at 239 students (budgeted for 240 students) compared to 254 last year; 26 new families this year (not all
Catholic) compared to 17 new families last year.
Social Ministries and Human Concerns Commission – October 8: We reviewed the Stewardship Handbook and our
responsibilities as members of the Commission. In response to what we learned at Leadership Day, we reviewed our
accomplishments in PY2014 in the ME25 areas and discussed what our focus would be this year.
A discussion followed on strategies for social ministry outreach to both external and internal audiences and on the seven
themes of the Catholic social teaching. These themes will be incorporated into homilies on the 4th weekend of each
month. Several suggestions were shared on ways to increase awareness of parish social service initiatives in the
community (wearing of St. Michael nametags during ministry work, public service announcements, etc.)
