Organised by INTRODUCTION Thee workshop on Water and Media: Rising up to the Challenge aspires to enhance the role of media in relaying water information to the public. It is held in conjunction with World Water Day 2011 that will be celebrated in Malaysia on 12 March 2011 in Pekan, Pahang. World Water Day 2011 is dedicated to the theme “ Water ater for Cities: Responding to the Urban Challenge”, that will bring together international attention on the impact of rapid urban population growth, industrialization and uncertainties caused by climate change, conflicts and natural disasters on urban water wat er systems. It seeks to encourage action by governments, organizations, communities, and individuals around the world to actively engage in addressing urban water management challenges. The Need for Water Management In Collaboration with Water is a finite resource. Increase in population means less water available per capita. As such, there are pressing needs for water security and sustainable management of water resources not only locally, but also at international level, aiming for global cooperation for Sustainable Developme nt.. Successful water management can be achieved if water resources management is handled not only by the government alone, but also with the involvement of private sector, NGOs and most important ly, the participation of local community. Local support is th e essence of any urban conservation programme. Education will play a vital role in developing people's awareness of the relevance and potential benefits of urban conservation. Encouraging involvement through education can be done by means of media campaign, campaign information sharing on environmental issues, meetings and workshops. The Need for Media Involvement Newspapers, magazines, radio, radio TV and the internet can be useful allies in carrying out urban conservation project projects. Their role to publicise environmental issues, issue or to highlight a project needing public involvement ought to be augmented. augmented Most newspapers, radio and TV stations have key environmental journalists to cover such news. Therefore, they should be in the know of such issue as well as p roject in the pipeline, so that necessary media coverage can be done.
