2014 Weekly Wire-No. 1 - Winter Equestrian Festival
WEEK 1 JANUARY 8-12, 2014 EDITOR: JENNIFER WOOD ESP Hosts Opening Press Conference for 2014 FTI WEF and AGDF Rodrigo Pessoa, Michael Stone, Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum, Gérard Manzinali, Mark Bellissimo, Havens Schatt, David Marcus, and Thomas Baur. Photo © ManciniPhotos. Equestrian Sport Productions (ESP) hosted an opening press conference on Tuesday at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (PBIEC) in Wellington, FL, to kick off the start of the 2014 FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival (FTI WEF) as well as the Adequan® Global Dressage Festival (AGDF). The press conference panel included Equestrian Sport Productions’ CEO Mark Bellissimo and President Michael Stone, Show Jumping Olympians Eric Lamaze, Meredith MichaelsBeerbaum and Rodrigo Pessoa, Dressage Olympian David Marcus, and WCHR Leading Hunter Rider Havens Schatt, along with Thomas Baur, Sport Director of Dressage for AGDF, and Gérard Manzinali, President of Jumping Chantilly. Mark Bellissimo welcomed everyone and spoke about the exciting growth and expanding support of both shows. “FTI Consulting has been very supportive with the Winter Equestrian Festival,” Bellissimo acknowledged. “We also now have a new relationship with Rolex that is going to take us to a different level. Adequan has been phenomenal for the Global Dressage Festival. I think this will be a turning point in Wellington across all of the disciplines that we have here. We will continue to work hard and invest in those things that will make us better as an operation, and we look forward to a great season.”All in all we are very excited about where we are, and the future.” Canadian Olympic Gold Medalist Eric Lamaze spoke about how the FTI WEF circuit has become a worldclass competition with many great opportunities for horses and riders. “We used to come to WEF to prepare for our seasons in Europe or wherever we were going next and this used to be, in my opinion, a great facility to train your horses for the summer tour,” Lamaze said. “Now, this equestrian festival has become world-class show jumping, so we actually arrive here and train all summer and make a plan to compete our best horses here and to expect the very best in the sport.” Three-time FEI World Cup Finals winner Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum agreed that the competition has grown greatly and that riders are now able to compete in Wellington with more options. “I’ve really enjoyed my time here. I’ve come here for many years,” Michaels-Beerbaum noted. “It has been a fantastic tool for me to ride here and bring along my young horses. Shutterfly started here as a seven-yearold. Checkmate as well started here as a seven-year-old and is returning as a 19-year-old. This has been a wonderful place to bring along horses, but it is not only that now. It is an amazing event with tremendous prize money. We can do two things at one time as riders. We can bring along our young horses, and we can compete against the best in the world and get world ranking points and prize money, so it is absolutely ideal for all of us.” Please turn to page 7 Welcome to the FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival! On behalf of the Wellington Equestrian Partners and Equestrian Sport Productions, I would like to welcome you to the 35th annual FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival (FTI WEF). We look forward to another fantastic season at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (PBIEC) with 12 weeks of outstanding equestrian sport for everyone in the community to enjoy. Heading into the 35th year of FTI WEF competition, FTI Consulting returns as our title sponsor this year, and we must thank them for their continued support of our event as well as their endless enthusiasm for equestrian sport. We are also welcoming Rolex to the ESP CEO Mark Bellissimo. Palm Beach International Equestrian Photo © Elena Lusenti. Center with an unprecedented sponsorship. We are honored to be partnered with one of the most respected brands in the world. Through this partnership, we will provide the resources to elevate the level of Show Jumping for the Americas and expose PBIEC to a broader international audience. The 5th annual FTI Consulting Great Charity Challenge presented by Fidelity Investments® (FTI GCC) will be the main event on Saturday, February 1, under the lights of the International Arena at PBIEC. This year’s fifth anniversary marks a milestone for the event as it will exceed $5 million donated in Palm Beach County alone. The goal this year is to raise over $1.5 million with 100% of all proceeds being donated to 34 local Palm Beach County charities. After its hugely successful debut in 2013, the $125,000 Trump Invitational presented by Rolex made its return to the stunning grounds of The Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, FL, on January 5. The one-of-a-kind event welcomed a star-studded list of spectators and competitors for an FEI-rated show jumping competition to help raise money for the FTI GCC. This year’s circuit will be bigger and better than ever with the world’s top horses and riders competing for over $8 million in prize money. The popular $75,000 Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup presented by G&C Farm returns on Friday, February 28, during week eight’s CSIO 4* competition. The only FEI Nations Cup in the United States, the exciting competition brings horses and riders from around the globe to compete on Wellington’s international stage in an impressive night of top sport. The invaluable support of our sponsors as well as the riders, trainers, exhibitors, and owners that participate at the FTI WEF each year is what makes this event possible. I also have to thank the fantastic staff that continues to help the show grow and improve each year with their countless hours of hard work and dedication. Page 3 WEEK 1 January 8 - 12, 2014 Kent Farrington and Blue Angel Win $125,000 Trump Invitational Grand Prix CSI 2*, Presented by Rolex Kent Farrington (USA) and Robin Parsky’s Blue Angel added another victory to their roster of recent wins with a top finish in Sunday’s $125,000 Trump Invitational Grand Prix, presented by Rolex. Held at The Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, FL, the second annual event brought together many of the best in equestrian show jumping for a day of great competition and charity fundraising, set on the lawn of Mr. Donald Trump’s scenic estate. Despite substantial rain, the grass footing that was newly replaced after last year’s event held up well throughout the day’s competition to give Farrington his second consecutive victory. He won the inaugural competition in 2013 aboard Amalaya Investments’ Dynamo. International course designer Anthony D’Ambrosio, of Red Hook, NY, set the track for Sunday’s highlight competition with twenty-eight horse and rider combinations, eight of which cleared the course without fault to advance to the jump-off. Seven entries returned over the short course with three double clear efforts. Kent Farrington and Blue Angel, a 2002 Anglo European mare by Luidam x Ascendant, led the victory gallop with a time of 36.85 seconds. Candice King (USA) and Bellissimo LLC’s Kismet 50 finished second with a clear jump-off round in 38.76 seconds, and Todd Minikus (USA) and Legacy Stables LLC’s Uraguay were third in 38.88 seconds. Lauren Hough (USA) and The Ohlala Group’s Ohlala had the fastest four-fault round in 38.30 seconds for fourth place. Following an exciting class, Equestrian Sport Productions CEO Mark Bellissimo praised the event and its many contributors, including the addition of new turf footing installed by Mr. Trump. “I think this event was amazing,” Bellissimo acknowledged. “To see the riders take very significant horses into the ring and ride in this condition is a testament to the great investment that Donald had in this class. Congratulations to Kent - another great job and a gutsy ride. I also want to reach out to all of the sponsors and all of the phenomenal contributors to this event. I am very excited about this class, and I think that this will grow in stature each year.” Donald Trump had another great year hosting the event and looks forward to 2015. “I just want to congratulate Kent and our great champions,” Trump smiled. “They are amazing athletes. As a novice, I think the weather made it more exciting. Last year we had the sun beaming down, and it was hot. I had no idea that these athletes could even perform in this kind of weather. I was very surprised by it, and it was amazing. I think it really made it quite exciting.” After back to back wins, Farrington expressed his gratitude for another victory, as well as the improved conditions this year. “I think all of the riders want to applaud Donald and Mark for redoing the footing,” he stated. “I think that is a huge effort for them to undertake, and part of making this a really top-notch, high level event so that we can bring our best horses here and know that we can count on great footing even in conditions that aren’t ideal, like today. I think it is really exciting having Donald get involved in our sport. I think that raises not only the level of competition, but also the exposure here in Florida. Also thank you to Rolex for getting involved, I think that is huge for show jumping in North America.” Commenting on his success with Blue Angel, Farrington noted, “That horse was already a winner before I started riding it. Lauren Hough had a lot of success with it, and it continues to be a great horse. It’s great to win two in a row (here). A big win is always exciting and for this event, to be part of it and to win it, is really special for me.” A $5,000 Junior/Amateur Jumper Speed Exhibition class, sponsored by EnTrust Capital, was also featured on Sunday afternoon following the main event. The exhibition class gave junior and amateur riders a special opportunity to compete at this unique venue and saw an exciting win for Cloe Hymowitz and Rose Hill Farm’s Bon Vivant. The pair had the fastest of three clear rounds with a time of 53.42 seconds. Heather Hooker and her longtime partner Perle finished second with a time of 56.83 seconds. Kira Kerkorian placed third aboard Lisa Kerkorian’s Rashmo Z in 59.46 seconds. Hymowitz explained that she had not ridden in a month before Sunday’s class and was very happy with her ride. “I didn’t expect much, but I have confidence in my horse and myself,” she remarked. “With the conditions, it is definitely more challenging. With the rain, you want to be more careful and cautious when you make turns, but I went out there and rode my hardest and did my best, so I’m very happy and excited.” “It is an amazing opportunity,” she said of showing at The Mar-a-Lago Club. “This is probably the nicest horse show I have ever been to. I was really excited when I heard that I was invited to compete. It was nice to see all of the top grand prix riders compete first and be able to watch how they executed their course and learn from them. It is definitely an honor to come and ride here with all of these great riders.” The second annual Trump Invitational, presented by Rolex would not be possible without the generous sponsors that support the event. The Equine Conditioning Center designs fitness programs to best maximize the horse’s athletic abilities and brings these therapies under one convenient roof, located in the heart of the largest performance horse capital in the world. “We are trying to develop more of a conditioning and fitness atmosphere for rider, horse, and possibly canine,” said Morgan Reyer, manager of the Equine Conditioning Center. “Most popular is the Aquapacer, which is a great workout with no rider necessary. One of our main concerns is safety, which we take very seriously due to the nature of the machines and the well-being of the horses and our staff. The facility is also under new management this year. We are very motivated to produce a positive environment to our horse gym.” Find out more about all of the advanced technology and services available by calling 561-784-1136 and visit their Facebook page, “Equine Conditioning Center” online. Continued from Page 1 Brazilian Olympic Gold Medalist Rodrigo Pessoa spoke about the 10year sponsorship agreement that Rolex recently signed with PBIEC. Pessoa explained how the increased sponsorship will greatly improve the level of competition at the FTI WEF. “It is really a wonderful thing, the arrival of Rolex here in Wellington,” Pessoa acknowledged. “I will take this opportunity not only to thank them, but all of the sponsors of the FTI WEF because without them this would not be possible. This has become really important for us to develop our horses and have the opportunity to be on the same show grounds as our students and be able to develop them. It is a fantastic tool that we have to prepare our horses and our students for the year to come.” In addition to a great increase in jumper prize money and FEI classes in 2014, the hunter divisions have seen an increase in money and classes as well. WCHR Leading Hunter Rider Havens Schatt has had great success at FTI WEF for many years and spoke on behalf of the hunter competitors at this year’s competition. “My first year at WEF as a professional was 1991, and it is amazing to think what happened,” Schatt stated. “Now, the amount of classes that they offer for the hunters, for every level of horse and every level of rider, is just amazing. With the 12 weeks, you can bring a young horse along nicely and still very successfully.” The press conference concluded with Mark Bellissimo and Gérard Manzinali, President of Jumping Chantilly, announcing an exciting new partnership between FTI WEF and Jumping Chantilly to expose exhibitors of both competitions to new venues. As part of the partnership, the winner of the Jumping Chantilly Grand Prix classes will receive an invitation to the 2015 FTI WEF. The Under 25 winner of the Artisan Farm Young Rider Grand Prix Series will receive a free Wild Card entry to Chantilly Jumping CSI 2* on July 25-27. Manzinali spoke about the partnership, stating, “Wellington and Chantilly are considered the equestrian capitals of their respective countries, so it came naturally for Mr. Bellissimo and I to create a partnership with our shows. It is safe to say that this partnership will allow us to raise the allotted slots for American riders, and we are also very excited to offer an invitation to the best young American rider through the Artisan Farms Young Rider Grand Prix Series. Thank you to Michael Stone and Christian Paillot, our ambassador here in Wellington, for their assistance in making this partnership a reality.” With a full, exciting season at both facilities of the PBIEC, Equestrian Sport Productions looks forward to welcoming you to see the best in equestrian sport.
