According to the Russian Navy Commander-in-Chief Admiral Victor Chirkov, fifty new
ships will be enlisted by the end of 2015.
His words were proved during IMDS. Lenexpo
visitors witnessed a ceremony of St. Andrew
flag launch aboard “Stary Oskol” submarine
celebrating the ships’ entering service with
the Russian Navy. During the ceremony Admiral Chirkov said that “Stary Oskol” submarine will help to maintain security and protect
Russian national interests in the Black Sea
and Mediterranean. It was also mentioned
that the test service of the project 677 “Lada”
initial submarine (St. Petersburg) would be
completed by the end of this year while the
air-independent submarine propulsion system construction will begin in 2018.
Victor Chirkov also specified November 25 as
the date for the “Igor Belousov” S&R vessel to
enter service. The project 21300 rescue vessel
was developed by the Almaz Design bureau

to arrange S&R operations with submarines
in need in both submerged and ground positions. The vessel is also able to provide means
of rescue and air and electricity supplies for
submarines and surface ships.
The Admiral confirmed that the existing fleet
of landing craft would be replaced completely
by modern ones. The maiden ship of the “Ivan
Gren” project is to enter service by the end
of 2015. The ship has 5,000 tonnes displacement, being able to land up to 300 marines
with 40 APCs or 13 tanks. The ship’s armament includes 76 mm gun, two 30mm antiaircraft AK-630 gun mounts as well as MLRS.
The ship hosts Ka-29 helicopter on the deck.
By 2020 the Russian Navy is to receive the first
new generation large landing ship surpassing
“Ivan Gren” several times by displacement
with many helicopters on board.
Chirkov stressed that Russia is able to build a
Mistral-scale LHD independently. He mentioned that the Army-2015 exhibition presented
a mock-up of such a project which could surpass her French counterpart. The project is
planned to carry up to 16 helicopters with 450
troops and 80 vehicles.
According to the Admiral Russia is going to
construct a new set of 18 corvettes with cruise
missiles titled project 22800. The maiden ship
is to be launched by the end of the year. While
the R&D works have not been completed Chir-

Rosoboronexport is an official IMDS-2015
sponsor and a regular participant of the St.
Petersburg naval show. Russia’s sole armed
strength mediator presented a varity of
new naval ships and equipment for foreign
participants and delegates.
“Nowadays Rosoboronexport’s naval sales
portfolio includes €4.5 billion contracts
worldwide,” claimed Rosoboronexport deputy CEO Igor Sevastyanov who headed
the company delegation at IMDS.
Speaking about the show results he mentioned that Russia and India were in a
process of negotiations on a number of
questions. Russia has already delivered six
project 11356 frigates: three in 2003-2004,
another three in 2012-2013. Negotiations
are going around an extra batch of three
ships which have been highly estimated by
the Indian Navy “Now we are under discussion with the Indian side concerning this
particular contract. Negotiations are at full
strength with several options of the contract fulfillment.”

kov disclosed some of the ship’s features.
The corvettes are to be equipped domestic
propulsion system having an operational
range of 1,000 nm and 30 days endurance.
The corvettes’ combat capacity is to be close to the “Admiral Grigorovich”-type frigate.
The Russian Navy C-in-C gave comments on
the “Leader” prospect destroyer. The ships’
technical project is under development to
be approved by the Navy shortly. “Leader’s” displacement is to be around 15-17
thousand tonnes. The weaponry is to include cruise missiles as well as future generation air defence. The ship’s construction is
to start around 2019.
Sevastyanov also mentioned that Russia
was conducting talks with India on the project 75 I submarine “The related negotiations with India are under way by Rosoboronexport and Rubin Design bureau. No firm
decision has been done yet as the tender is
not officially announced.”
India is going to start license production of
the Russian designed project 2700 “Alexandrite” anti-mine vessel. India is keen on
the ship’s capabilities and wants to build a
large set. This year the Russian Navy received the project 2700 “Alexandrite” mine
sweeper – “Alexander Obuhov” with up to
30 total number of ships on demand. The
mine sweeper displacement is 890 tonnes
with a full speed 16.5 knots. The hull is
made of fibreglass to reduce the ship’s mass
and extend its lifecycle over 30 years.
Igor Sevastyanov also mentioned that several nations of Latin America, the Middle
East and South East Asia are interested in
Mangust fast patrol craft of project 12150.
According to the Vympel Shipyard CEO
Oleg Belkov, Mangust export could start
this year. He mentioned Vietnam, India,
Brazil and several African nations as prospective customers. Belkov estimated that
around 50 units could be sold in total including some jointly built.
The project 12418 “Molnia” missile boat
for the Vietnamese navy can be equipped
with new cruise missile. Boats that are under license production in Vietnam and the
national navy would like to upgrade them.
The first deal on “Molnia” was signed with
Vietnam in 2003. According to the contract
two Russian made boats were delivered
in 2007-2008 with 4 built in Vietnam under license later on. All the existing boats
have been equipped with the URAN cruise missiles, AK-176 76mm artillery mount,
2 AK-630M air-defence mounts and Igla
MANPADS.
Sevastyanov confirmed Russia’s readiness
to fulfill the contract with China on delivery and maintenance of the four ZUBR aircushion large landing craft. The Theodosiabased More plant has been a prime contractor for the PRC-Ukraine deal and with
the Crimea returning to Russia the contract
has come under Russian Federation, i.e.
Rosoboronexport responsibility.

IMDS future
Despite impressive results the IMDS future
remains uncertain. The Lenexpo grounds
have become a private property and will
be used for commercial construction.
During IMDS-2015 the situation was actively discussed with several new locations proposed. The announced proposal of
moving Lenexpo into city federal property
looks like the best possible solution. The
draft is to be discussed by the end of September.

result of the meeting.
“Terrorism poses a direct threat to the
security of NATO countries and to international stability and prosperity. It is a
global threat that knows no border, nationality, or religion – a challenge that the
international community must fight and
tackle together. Terrorism in all its forms
and manifestations can never be tolerated
or justified. The security of the alliance is
indivisible, and we stand in strong solidarity with Turkey. We will continue to follow
the developments on the South-Eastern
border of NATO very closely.”
After the meeting NATO Secretary General
Jens Stoltenberg said about the results:
“All allies expressed their strong support
and we stand all together united in solidarity with Turkey. And all allies also condemned terrorism in all its forms. Turkey
didn’t ask for any additional military NATO
presence. What we all know is that Turkey
is a staunch ally. Turkey has very capable
armed forces, the second largest army
within the alliance.”
Answering the question, what NATO and
the representatives in the meeting think
about the Turkish plans to implement
a buffer zone inside the Syrian territory, Stoltenberg said: “NATO is not part
of these efforts. This is something which
is discussed on a bilateral basis between
Turkey and the United States.”

the three companies reduced airframe production costs by 25%. The new composite
the potential to help
ensure the type’s continuing superiority for
many years to come.
It entails primarily the addition of fuselage strakes
and leading-edge root

were stopped due to the German government’s decision and the competitors – and
not just Russian – started closing the gap. It
is interesting that the U.S. based Cummins

end of this year. The Russian Navy’s combat forces already have four ships from
this project: Steregushchy, Soobrazitelny,
Boiky, and Stoiky. All of these are part of
the Baltic Sea Fleet. Two months ago, the
corvette Sovershenny was also commissioned. The ship is currently being outfitted with equipment. After completing
tests, the ship will become part of the
Pacific Fleet. The new corvettes will serve
as the foundation of the Russian Navy in
the near maritime zone.
Project 20380 corvettes are designed to
combat the enemy’s surface ships and
submarines, as well as to support amphibious assaults during special operations.
They have a displacement of about 2,000
tons and a length of 100 metres, can reach
speeds up to 27 knots, and can travel autonomously up to 4,000 miles.
The ships have a flush steel hull and superstructure made from laminated composite materials to enable stealth technology.

(SEWIP), Lockheed Martin will provide additional systems to upgrade the AN/SLQ-32
systems on US aircraft carriers, cruisers,
destroyers and other warships with key
capabilities to determine if the electronic
sensors of potential foes are tracking the
ship.
Block 2 is the latest in an evolutionary succession of improvement “blocks” and will
add new defensive technologies and functional capabilities. In 2013 and 2014, Lockheed Martin was awarded 24 systems as
part of low-rate initial production, the first
ten of which have been delivered.

(df) Boeing’s seventh Wideband Global
SATCOM (WGS) satellite is now in orbit
and will soon provide the US and allied
militaries with 17 percent more secure
communications bandwidth and therefore
a reliable transmittion of vital information
than its predecessors thanks to a payload
upgrade.
WGS-7 sent its first successful signals soon
after being launched on a United Launch Alliance Delta IV rocket. The next three WGS
satellites will incorporate Boeing’s advanced
digital payload design, which doubles payload bandwidth and further improves connectivity. WGS-8 is scheduled for launch in late
2016. Boeing will deliver a total of 10 WGS
satellites to the U.S. Air Force.
