We had the helicopter scandals and the electoral fraud which resulted in the resignation of senator Juan Miguel Zubiri who stood proud in announcing his resignation amidst the electoral protest on his winning four years ago. He was praised by his colleagues in the senate with his show of moral courage in stepping down from his post. Zubiri also said he has not benefited from having held his post in the past 4 years. “No amount of power, position or wealth is worth sacrificing one’s honor and integrity.” he said. I personally salute Sen Zubiri in his decision as the ultimate measure of a person is not where he/she stands in moments of comfort, but where he/she stands at times of challenge and controversy. His resignation made it easy for the electoral tribunal and senate committee to decide on the proclamation of Atty Koko Pimentel as the winning candidate in the 2007 senatorial election. While anomalies on the AFP pabaon and others are not yet finished, here comes another anomaly on the alleged ‘Helicopter Scandal’ which is under investigation in the senate. Twenty Seven years ago after the so called birth of democracy and good governance, which we set to commemorate this month, I thought corruption and anomalies will be gone after these historic changes in our country but it seems that only the players were changed but the results are still the same as before or even worse. I hope that one day all our leaders will realize the importance of Democracy and freedom that we have achieve in those years and will continue to restore it in the years to come for the sake of our children and the future generations. Though there is a saying that no one is perfect, if we however want to change, we can always make it as it only depends on our willingness to change. It is also the same as what we look forward to an individual’s daily encounter in life. Each of us will pass through all of our experiences and daily tasks but once. Any good therefore that we can do, or any kindness we can show, let us do it now. Let us not put back or neglect it as we shall never pass this way again. We have to plan for tomorrow but live for today as life is like a drawing without an eraser. What will happen to us today cannot be erased tomorrow. We have to learn which bridge in life we will use or which one to break off. We have to keep in mind to first say to our self on what we would want to be; and then do what we have to do. As I always point out in every OFW association gathering here in Hong Kong, to keep in mind the spirit and importance of solidarity and strength among their members. Keep in mind that God will always give us difficulties to make us strong, to test our strength and faith in Him and our colleagues. He will always give us problems to solve to test our wisdom. In our life we seldom think of what we receive but always think of what we missed. Perhaps God would want us to become acquainted with many different people in the course of our life so that when we meet the right ones we will appreciate and be grateful for them. For myself I received nothing I wanted, but received everything I needed. Remember that there are two things to aim in life; first to get what you want, and second is to enjoy it. We have to live life without FEAR, we have to confront all obstacles and know that we can overcome them. Always keep in mind that all true achievements and success depends at last upon our self. Our greatest achievements are not based in never falling, but in rising every time we fall. Happy Reading ! Mabuhay ang Pinoy. Arnold P. It was not able to reach its targeted number of copies for the year due to financial difficulty, “declared LFHK Founder/ President Chloe Belle D. Dogeno during their assessment. The group gathered in Repulse Bay Beach on 24 July 2011 to celebrate their one-year anniversary and general assembly with a simple lunch and get-to together amongst the members. A one- year assessment of LFHK’s activity was scrutinized and discussed during the meeting and future plans for the group was unveiled to the members. Their schedules of seminars and livelihood skills training until December 2011 was also disclose for the members reference. New livelihood skills training in Fish Processing, Food Cart Yummies, Baking 2 (all cakes) and Baking 3 (all cookies) were presented to the group. and Drug Safety (Batch 1 & 2) w/ St. James Settlement, Financial Literacy w/ Banco de Oro, Philippine National Bank & TP3, Breast and Cervical Cancer w/ St. John’s Cathedral HIV Education Center and LIFE Foundation, Physiotherapy Training also w/ StJCHIVEC. As much as possible we do not want to ask for sponsorship for our funds, only for the venue of our seminars because we want to practice managing our group independently,” Dogeno said. Also inviting OFWs on their seminar: 28 August- Cardiovascular Diseases, 25 September- Drug Administration and Drug Safety (Batch 3) and to their Recognition Day on 23 October 2011 in Bayanihan Trust Center. “Up to date, we have 172 members but 8 were expelled and 3 had resigned. Some of our members had already gone home for good, others were inactive and have international day- offs,” according to Dogeno. “I do want them all to learn livelihood skills to equip themselves for their reintegration. But a pity to those who can not attend due to various reasons because LFHK is only until 2013 in Hong Kong. We will cease here and move to Philippines,” she added. In one- year since its establishment in 18 July 2010, the group had implemented 23 livelihood skills training for its members in Baking(OWWA), Food Cart Business(OWWA), Ribbon Folding, Bead Crafts, Meat Processing and Soap Carving. They named the event GOKUD Mindanao. Gokud is a Visayan word for “chase”. The nature and the scope of the game was redesigned to suit the group available time and resources. The unique concept of the game was designed not only to challenge one’s stamina but also to test the strategy and planning skills of the participants as can be viewed in the rules and mechanics of the game. Other participants were: DOMOHK, Laguna Achievers LAWA Bohol HK Federation, Visayas Alliance (VISAHK) Phil Investors and Savers Organization (PISO) Marinduque Assn, Cebu Federation Intl (CFI,) Isabela Federation, FilReflex and NOPT-HK MinMa Would like to to extend their hearfelt gratitude to GOKUD sponsors PLDT SMART 1528 and Gen EX Cargo and to all group participants for the succesfull conclusion of GOKUD 2011. Now on its 4th season GOKUD becomes a venue for friendship and camaraderie for some OFWs in Hong Kong. The experience in joining GOKUD broaden the participants knowledge and teaches them the value of camaraderie, teamwork and sportsmanship. GOKUD slowly become an annual regular event of the Mindanao (HK) Migrant Alliance. Thus, last August 7, 2011 under the soaring heat of the sun, 14 OFW groups joined another season of GOKUD. One batch traveled from Victoria Park to Central and another batched traveled from Belcher’s Park to Central. This year’s GOKUD featured 20 stations and was more meaningful since Philippine historical landmarks in Hong Kong were added in the GOKUD route. The winners of this years GOKUD are the following: Muslim Filipino Association (MUSFILA) – Champion; Leyte Samar Association (Leysam) 1st runner up; La Union Federation (LUFOH ) 2nd runner up. 8 friends International Magazine AUGUST 2011 9 At Your Service By: Rolando E. Rolly) INNOCENT MONSTER Dear Bro. Rolly, Six months ago I transferred to a new employer after my previous employer with whom I worked for six years emigrated to Australia. While I have no complaint against my new employers (Chinese couple) who treat me kindly, my problem is about their only child, an 8-year old boy who I find extremely violent and naughty. I understand that in a span of just two years they have already employed five helpers all of whom have resigned because they could not handle this boy whom they have branded “little monster”. As the sixth helper, I feel that I will also follow my predecessor’s fate. During the first month of my employment, I noticed right away the boy’s bad behaviour especially as only the two of us are left in the flat all day long because both my employers are working. Every morning I dress him up for school, he would kick me, even spit on me and yell at me telling me he hates me. We eat breakfast and dinner together because his parents come home late almost every day. He would throw food right on my chest and spill his drinks on my dress and then yell at me with anger. Several times he threw spoons at me and really hurt me. When I told him, one time, I will leave because he is very naughty he really begged me to stay and cried and cried. I have never seen him very scared than at that moment and I really pitied him. He promised he will behave but after a few days he was back to “normal” again. I have informed my employers for so many times about their son’s behaviour but they said it is my job to look after their son while it is their job to look for money to pay for my salary. I am really bothered by their carefree attitude towards their son They are able to sit down together as a family only once a week and yet I have not seen them talk to him nicely and show that they care as parents. They would shout at him and even hit him every time he makes mistake. A few days ago, this monster boy once again kicked me while I was dressing him up and I almost hit him back but it’s a good thing I did not lose control of myself. I am planning to resign as I am afraid I might hurt him one of these days. I need your counsel as I want to work for another employer because I have four children who I am supporting . Carina, Fan Ling, NT Dear Carina, That boy is not a monster, he is a sick child. He has got a huge psychological problem. He needs love, care and attention which obviously he does not get from his parents. The syndrome is clear - he is a sad boy wanting to get across his message to his parents that he needs them but he could not and so he does naughty and bad things to send that message to get their attention. It is common in Hong Kong to see both husband and wife working due to high cost of living and as a result, most of the time, parenting is left in the hands of the domestic helper. The domestic helper then becomes the “shock absorber” of an “attention-starved” child like in your own particular case. It is abnormal for any boy of that age not to be naughty. However he became even naughtier 10 because of the present circumstance. I would counsel instead that you take the role of being a mother of that boy. As you are a parent yourself I am sure it is easy for you to understand when I tell you that you can fill up the missing gap in that boy’s life – a mother’s love and attention. Be his mother for the time being. Give him a motherly hug when he feels sad, read bed-time stories for him, take him to the park, tell him to speak out, play games with him, etc. Treat him like your own son. Remember he became very scared and begged you to stay when you threatened to leave. That child has developed the LOVE in you, you simply have to reciprocate it, he is just confused and he could not express it rightly. Be patient because LOVE is. It is a good investment when you are able to change the life of that child – you are assured of re-contract in these hard times of too many terminations. And one thing more, that investment will not cost you any money because LOVE is always free. Bro. Rolly TO WALK OR NOT TO WOK Dear Bro. Rolly, By July 17, 2001 I shall have completed my 2-year employment contract with my Chinese employer. I am worried about the kind of release letter she will be issuing me because of the events that have happened in the past few months. We find it difficult to communicate with each other because apart from few and very limited English words she knows, I could not understand the way she pronounce them. There have been a lot of times when my employer would give me certain instructions and yet when I complied it would turn out they were not the ones she had intended me to do. The latest miscommunication happened during the last week of April this year when while I was working in the kitchen, she approached me and told me, “Gina, you take a walk”. I was surprised why she told me that. At first I did not move and stared at her, but when she screamed the same instruction again, I hurriedly left and walked towards the living room thinking that perhaps she wanted to be alone in the kitchen or perhaps she wanted me to take a break by letting me take a short walk. However she screamed again and ran towards me in the living room with the wok on her right hand which she said she will smash on my head. I then realized that she wanted me to “take the wok” and not for me to “take a walk”. This is just one example of the many misunderstandings we had in the past because of communication problem. If she issued me a bad release letter, do you think I will still be able to transfer to a new employer? Gina, Sau Ma Ping Dear Gina, Communication problem is one of the reasons why some domestic workers do not have a good working relationship with their employers. When faced with this problem, the helper would either break the contract herself or the employer would terminate the contract using communication problem as the reason for such premature termination of the contract. While some helpers are able to transfer to new employers, some are sent back home by the Immigration Department. I know of so many domestic helpers who, despite their employers’ inability to speak English and despite their inability to speak Cantonese, are able to maintain long-term and harmonious relationships with their employers. A lot of them use sign language at first to communicate with their employers and then they take such problem as a challenge and opportunity for them to have the desire to learn how to speak Cantonese, and after a while they are able to speak the language. It is also equally important to use one’s COMMON SENSE when following instructions from the employer. Relate the instruction on the situation and on the place and time it is given by the employer and than act accordingly and with a common sense. Most of the helpers I know however are generally smart and intelligent. I am reminded of one, who used to be a high school teacher, and who at one time was charged by the police of littering. One Sunday morning she went to a park and bought a sandwich and a can of softdrink . She then pulled the aluminum tab from the soft-drink can and placed it right beside her on the concrete chair. A policewoman saw what she did and approached her and charged her of littering. She argued but naturally the policewoman pre-vailed. She attended the hearing one month later and was offered a court interpreter which she politely refused reasoning out that she could express and defend herself. The judge read the case filed against her and told her, “According to police record you committed littering by throwing a piece of rubbish on the chair in the park”. “Your honor”, she said, “I did not commit littering nor did I throw a piece of rubbish on the chair. As far as I know, throwing means lifting something and then hurling it causing that thing to fly into the air and landing away from you. Your honor, the fact that I just placed the softdrink tab right beside me on the chair did not mean that I littered.” The judge asked, “So, then why did you not stand up and put the tab on the nearby rubbish bin?” And she replied, “Your honor, my intention was being prudent by putting the tab and the sandwich wrapper altogether and at the same time in the bin after I have finished eating my sandwich.” The case was dropped. But you don’t have to be a teacher to be a little bit smart when following your employer’s instructions. You have to have common sense though ALL THE TIME. Regarding your question, you can transfer to a new employer after you have completed your 2-year employment contract whether you have a good release letter or not. But whether the new employer will be interested to hire you is another question. I suggest that you try your best to impress your present employer during the last few weeks of your stay with her so that you can obtain a good release letter. employer. Bro. Rolly shared by Remely Valdez “Oh that you would bless me wonderfully, Please be with me in everything I do. Greatly expand my [Christian] borders, and Keep me from all evil, harm and disaster.” Fourth, also pray everyday telling God that we are available and ask Him to use us to be “as Jesus” in some way to every life we touch. Fifth, know what God’s Word, the Bible, teaches so we know what to believe and how to live. Strive with God’s help to always live in harmony with God’s will as taught in His Word. To do this we need to read and study God’s word regularly, if not daily. Sixth, maintain strong connections with fellow Christians to help support and encourage each other in our Christian work. “Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life, is now hidden with Christ in God.”(Colossians 3:1-3) A faithful Christian once said, “We are doing a Bible study on spiritual gifts.” Do we have any ideas on how Christians can become more spiritual in their everyday living, and what constitutes a spiritual person? Well, being a born-again Christian, a lot of things happened in my life especially the transformation within myself especially the way i talk, the values of life and the wisdom and knowledge i had. I always act in different way not same as before. God done many changes in my life since the day that i repent and surrendered my life to Him..But being a Christian, need also to be strong coz the devil knows the Word of God so well, the devil continuously seeks to find ways to nulify the lives of people who truly believe the Words of God. The devil uses countless words to neutralize our faith and consequently destroy us. The devil causes strangers to befriend those who are weak in the faith and sow words of critism in their hearts. The devil uses relatives and friends with the same objective. Lies are one of the many methods the devil uses and unfortunately, many have been destroyed by this weapon. Those who have heeded the devil’s lies are already part of Satan’s family and live in darkness. So, in order to fight the devil’s work, we need to obey the Word of God and put our trust in Him and use our faith in action not in words only. And how can we determine that we, Christians become more spiritual in our daily living and how can we become genuinely spiritual? need to have a strong desire for this and be fully committed to it, because authentic spirituality doesn’t come naturally to most of us. The halfhearted never make it. Second, ask God to give us the desire to be all that He has planned for us to be and the desire to do what He wants us to do. Third, it is very helpful to pray every day, committing our life and way to God, including a prayer such as that of Jabez: Seventh, be faithful in worship in our church and in service to others, using the spiritual gifts that God has given to us. Remember, too, that while using spiritual gifts is very important, having these gifts is not the measure of spirituality. The real test is the test of love. As the Apostle Paul wrote: “If I speak in the tongues [languages] of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” (1 Corinthians 13:1,13) Passi City (Iloilo) Association HK Events/Activities Passi City (Iloilo) Association HK Members PCA-HK’s Macau Escapade The Ten (10) Contestants for Best Speaker ‘11. On behalf of UMELA Officers and members I’d like to extend my deepest gratitude to all of them for their benevolent support. In UMELA WE UNITE, WE SERVE & WE “DARE TO DREAM”! GOD BLESS US! What are the chances of getting the Hong Kong High Court to rule in our favour? What must domestic helpers do? Anna of Shatin The hottest topic for all domestic helper visa holders in Hong Kong is the coming judicial review cases to be heard by the High Court of Hong Kong this August and in October 2011. The 3 petitions were filed by our kababayans namely Evangeline Vallejos, a domestic worker here since 1986; Daniel and Irene Domingo who worked here as domestic workers from 1982 to 2007 and from 1985 to 2007; and Josephine Gutierrez, a domestic worker since 1991. THE ASPIRATIONS of many who worked in Hong Kong for at least 7 years is definitely to become Permanent Residents of Hong Kong. Even without doing a proper survey, this statement is accurate. There are many reasons but not limited to the fact that there are jobs for domestic helpers in Hong Kong, with good pay including food, accommodations, and trips back to Philippines. Yes the hours are long but the working conditions are mostly opulent and luxurious given that Employers are screened by the Immigration Department to be financially able to employ domestic helpers. Compared this to being a day worker or per hour worker on the decoration, building and retail and services industries where the worker pays for his living expenses outside. Undeniably, income in HK is much higher than from home. OTHER REASONS: HK is very close to Philippines. If you live in America and Europe, the distance, the cost & time of travel will be greater. Include the cultural differences including food, customs, traditions, weather, and more, HK is a good place to earn a living and have a cohesive social life, with Philippines just 1-½ hours away. Important, is the efficient, effective infrastructure and excellent governance of HK government plus strong rule of law. Overlooking the tiny space, high prices, restricted democratic election of leaders, Hong Kong is “ALMOST PARADISE IN ASIA”. THE LAW: ENTITLEMENTS AND BARRIERS are real for domestic visa holders. Immigration Ordinance, Cap 155, Section 2 defines “WHO IS A PERMANENT RESIDENT” (PR) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region as a person who is within one of the following categories is a permanent resident of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region- 14 under sub section (d), A person not of Chinese nationality who has entered Hong Kong with a valid travel document, has ordinarily resided in Hong Kong for a continuous period of not less than 7 years and has taken Hong Kong as his place of permanent residence before or after the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, who, before the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, had the right of abode in Hong Kong only. The above section by itself would entitle many DH visa holders the right of abode and thus become permanent residents of HK. But, there is an interpretation of the meaning of ‘ORDINARILY RESIDENT” of HK. Section 2(4)(a)(vi) of Immigration Ordinance Cap 115, says that (4) For the purposes of this Ordinance, a person SHALL NOT BE TREATED AS ORDINARILY RESIDENT in Hong Kong- (a) during any period in which he remains in Hong Kong- (Amended 122 of 1997 s. 2) (vi) while employed as a domestic helper who is from outside Hong Kong; or (Added 122 of 1997 s. 2). It is because of this interpretation under s 2(4) (a)(vi), that excludes all holders of DH visa from qualifying as PR of HK, because by law, their stay is not considered as Ordinarily resident of HK. It is this interpretation that the 3 petitioners who are all Pinoys and our Kababayans mount the Judicial Review at the High Court. LEGALLY UNFAIR, IRRATIONAL, UNREASONABLE, AND UNCONSTITUTIONAL: The Judicial Review will be based on the above legal standards of fairness, rationality, reasonableness and constitutionality. On a layman’s language, one can ask, why is an engineer who works in HK for 7 years can become PR but not the DH? Both are working albeit different nature of job; Both are from Philippines and worked and stayed in HK for 7 years; Both contributed to the economic success of HK, the engineer more direct and obvious and the DH indirectly by freeing the spouse to join the work force and have a 2nd income in the family; Both has reasonable means to support themselves; Both are of good character without any criminal convictions; Both are settled in HK by the time they apply for PR; Both are paying taxes, the engineer pay salaries tax while the DH through levy or because they are exempted in any event because their salaries are lower than the allowable tax deductions for calculations of tax payable to the HK Internal Revenue. With the different entitlements in law, it is simply unfair and discriminatory. HONG KONG BILL OF RIGHTS GUARANTEED EQUALITY: Chapter 3 of the Basic Law of HK, Article 24, states that, Hong Kong Residents shall include PRs and Non PRs. The PRs are those (4) Persons not of Chinese nationality who have entered Hong Kong with valid travel documents, have ordinarily resided in Hong Kong for a continuous period of not less than seven years and have taken Hong Kong as their place of permanent residence before or after the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. This right does not exclude DH Visa holders as compared with the Immigration Ordinance Cap 115. Article 25 of the same Basic Law states, All Hong Kong residents shall be equal before the law. This equality extends to all residents whether PRs or Non PRs. If the DH Visa Holder is considered HK Resident, then he or she is entitled to the equality espoused by the Basic Law. Why must they be excluded? The Basic Law speaks of Equality and is more superior law that the Immigration Ordinance which is discriminatory and contradictory to the Basic Law. Every one of us is facing our future and unsure of what the next year would bring. Nobody knows what God’s will is. Does a lack of certainty about the future translate in not knowing God’s will? The concept of knowing God’s will is often limited to discerning what specific situation we will be in at some future time. Although seeking God’s specific leading is a part of it. The aspect that is just as vital is to follow clearly defined elements of Gds will each and everyday. Like, it is gods will for us to be good in our work to fellow creatures, friends, to be a good citizen in general as a challenge to those opposed to Christ. (1 Peter 2:15) We should give thanks to God no matter what happen to us, avoiding immorality (1 Thessalonians 4:3) to live under the Holy Spirit’s control (Ephesians 5:18) to praise and sing to him and submit and befriend to other believers. Like my father’s death, I considered it as Gods will. Looking at him in his hospital bed diagnosed of colon cancer lat Novembe3r 2010, I saw him in incredible pain, I pitied him, unable to draw full breath, experienced those several injections, colonoscopy medications, op- KnowingGod’s Will eration oral and chemotherapy and we know its very painful watching him. Last March 11, 2011, I took my emergency exit to see him, I was definitely block out and fainted that day. I believe God is with me, because from that experienced I opened my mind and when I saw him I feel that he was sleeping towards eternity. He told me, Anak, LET’S TRUST THE LORD AND THANK HIM FOR FORGIVENESS OF MY SINS, he lamented with his soft voice. When he saw me crying he said I’m okay now and I’m ready to go to Heaven and meet God. I was clothed with warm embrace by my mommy and with God. Looking back, at my father’s tragedy, I considered it as Gods will, we accepted it. What encourage me and my family and siblings, I read to then Job 33:4. It says the Spirit of God has made me and the (Spirit) breath of the Almighty gives me life. Its really very painful losing our love one but if we keep our heart and read the Gods words we will be comforted. According to John 11:35 even Jesus wept with those who wept because he understands sorrow. He said, If you’ve loss a loved one you understand my grief and loneliness. However, despite the pain there is comfort and hope because of the Promise of God, who personally interested in us and is touched with the feel- ing of our infirmities (Hebrew 4:15) there4 is a place called HEAVEN. The bible makes is it clear that when one who trust Christ dies, He or She is absent from the body and present with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:8). So, it is that we know we will be reunited someday and it has been promised that in Heaven He will wipe away all tears from our eyes. (Revelation 7:17) To my fellow brothers and sisters for our comforting verse and encouragement to ourselves if we loss our loved ones. In I Thessalonians 4:13-18 it says that when our Lord returns and our love one dies, our love one who tr5usted him will be raised from the dead. He will bring their spirits with Him from Heaven to enter their changed eternal bodies and then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air and so shall we with the Lord. This inspires me and comforted me during these days of my mourning. Fellow believers, remember Matthew 11:28 Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. We come to Him, whether through death or the Lords return, we will be together in heaven with the Lord. May it be that we and our love ones will join the LORD in HEAVEN. That’s GOD’S WILL. Article 39 states, The provisions of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, and international labour conventions as applied to Hong Kong shall remain in force and shall be implemented through the laws of the HKSAR. The rights and freedoms enjoyed by Hong Kong residents shall not be restricted unless as prescribed by law. Such restrictions shall not contravene the provisions of the preceding paragraph of this Article. The ICCPR was adopted in HK and is enforced by HK courts. While it is true that there is restriction imposed by the s 2 (4) (a) (vi) interpretations of ordinarily resident of HK, this interpretation is inferior to the higher edict of the Basic Law. There is strong legal basis to challenge the interpretation as irrational, unfair, illogical and therefore unconstitutional. The interpretation should be amended to be in line with the law of 7 years ordinarily resident in HK being equally applicable to a Working Visa holder or DH Visa Holder. (To be continued next month on other legal, social, economic, political consequences of the petition. Please read and support the Judicial Review Petition. Carillo / ORAS NG HIMALA staff 1 “ Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for a feast of the 2 Jews. Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is 3 surrounded by five covered colonnades. Here a great number of disabled people used to lie5 -the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight 6 years. When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to 7 get well?” ”Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone 8 else goes down ahead of me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” 9 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took 10 place was a Sabbath, and so the Jews said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.” 11 But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, `Pick up your mat and walk.’ “12So they asked him, “Who is this fellow who told 13 you to pick it up and walk?” The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was 14 there. Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.” John 5:1-14 Four Revelations: 1. Our Lord Jesus Christ knows our situation, condition, illness, burden, suffering, and problem. He knows our thoughts, our speech, and our deeds and even our heartbeat. Nothing is hidden from His sight. As Jesus knew the condition of the man in John 5:1-14 who was lame for 38 years, the same is true with us; He does not only know our situations and conditions, but He also knows every aspect of our lives. He knows which part of our lives that needs to be mended or to be taken care. The solution is in Him. He knows all our needs today, tomorrow and forever. He is so much concerned with us. Indeed, we are so much important in the yes of God. And because He loves us, He wants to mend and make all aspects of our lives pleasant. 2. The Lord Jesus wants to remove our hearts and minds to our negative situation, condition, suffering, illness and problems and turn it unto Him for He is the solution of it. As Jesus removed the lame man’s attention to his miserable condition and switched it unto Him who is the solution of his problem, the same thing He wants to do unto us. Definitely, He wants to remove our hearts and minds from our negative situation, condition, illness, burden, suffering, and problem. Then, we will be able to see the solution. Otherwise, we will never know the solution, and our situation may even get worse. 16 by Chloe Belle D. Dogeno things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:25-34 3. We have to believe that the Lord Jesus Christ is so much able to save us, to change us, to heal us, to bless us, and to give solution to our problems. Sickness and disease also come when we fear, when we have self-pity, when we have bitterness, and when we do not forgive those who sinned against us. So, we have to decide to refuse sinning against God. However, if we commit sin against God, we have to repent now. Our Lord Jesus did not try to heal the lame man in Bethesda, but he healed him. Therefore, we have to believe that Jesus Christ is so much able to give us the solution to all our problems. We have to believe that He is the only solution to all crises. “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 We have to expect miracles from God. Why? It is because nothing is impossible for Him to do. He can do all things. Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God. Mark 10:27 4. Jesus does not want us to keep sinning again and again. As Jesus did not want the lame man to commit sin again, He does not also want us to keep sinning against Him again and again. It is because if we fall into sin again, our lives will be ruined; our future will be destroyed. Sin destroys lives, family, and future. Sin creates a dark world. And the wages of sin is death in the fire of hell. When we live in sin, whether we like it or not, we will get sick. Jesus said that illness is connected with sin. Sickness comes when we worry for anything. Anxiety shortens life span and it gives sicknesses and diseases. 25 “ Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more im26 portant than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than 27 they? Who of you by worrying can add a 28 single hour to his life? ”And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the 29 field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splen30 dor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O 31 you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, `What shall we eat?’ or `What shall we drink?’ 32 or `What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father 33 knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these Ardan, Secretary: Faith A. Campillanos, Assistant Secretary: Mercy R. Villarta, Treasurer: Edna R. I now forgive everyone who sinned against me. I release forgiveness and forget what they have done or said against me. I now also forgive myself. Lord Jesus, I now accept you as my Lord and Savior and my healer. Lord Jesus, I invite you to come into my life and reign in my heart. I need you, and I will abide in you. Eddie Villanueva Unpaid bills. Failed relationship. Unsuccessful project. Impossible employer. Deteriorating health. Rebellious child. Cheating spouse. When life hits you hard, don’t let it knock you down. John Piper worded it for us clearly, “Life is not a straight line leading from one blessing to the next and then finally to heaven. Life is a winding and troubled road. Switchback after switchback. And the point of biblical stories like Joseph and Job and Esther and Ruth is to help us feel in our bones (not just know in our heads) that God is for us in all these strange turns. God is not just showing up after the trouble and cleaning it up. He is plotting the course and managing the troubles with far-reaching purposes for our good and for the glory of Jesus Christ.” Life, in other words, is essentially good lumped with the bad – with the bad intended only to bring out the good in us. Hence, when the bad turns up and comes along, we should remember that everything happens for a reason. It is in our dire times that we must purposefully choose to trust steadily in the faithfulness of the God who promised that He knows the plans He has for us (Jeremiah 29:11). In the midst of life’s difficulties, we are not left alone and helpless. God has a standing invitation to us: “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me— watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly” (Matthew 11:27-30, MSG). It is most comforting that at our most trying times, the preceding Bible verses point us to the fact that 1) God cares, 2) God is available to us, and 3) God is in control. God cares. We all know this in good times, of course. It is when we hit rock bottom that we question if He really does. president Nestor V. Tan. We can always turn to God for help; He has given us the invitation to come (Matthew 11:27). He has also called on us to call unto Him. “Let your cry come to me, and I will give you an answer, and let you see great things and secret things of which you had no knowledge” (Jeremiah 33:3, Bible in Basic English). The problem, really, is that we take our independence too seriously that we think we can live separately from God. BDO, through its global remittance service brand BDO Remit, offers specialized remittance services that cater to the needs of the Overseas Filipinos and migrants. With almost 3,000 Cash Pick-up locations all over the country and thousands of combined BDO Remit offices abroad, international remittance partners and agent locations worldwide, BDO guarantees convenience, security and reliability. Clearly we go through life alone because we choose to, not because we have to. The thing is, we can’t tackle life even with our best and greatest strength, wisdom, money, power, influence, and fame all built into one tall “Tower of Babel.” Apart from the LORD, even our best efforts will come tumbling down – sooner than later. Ultimately, therefore, God is in control. To the believer whose life fully depends on God, this is a fountain of joy and assurance. But to him who wrestles against the LORD, this is a fair warning. God has sworn in His Word, “I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say: My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please” (Isaiah 46:10). Only a fool will work against the will of this God who “… stretches out His heavens over empty space. He hangs the earth on nothing whatsoever” (Job 26:7). When life hits you hard, draw near to God, call unto Him, and trust His plans and purposes. Remember that He cares for you, He is available to you, and He is in control of your situation. Tetangco Jr. LEE Trading This is why we have the likes of Joseph, Daniel, his three friends Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, in the Bible. Because these giants of faith trusted in God and in His goodness even in the midst of their lives’ worst possible situation. Joseph, though he kept his integrity and feared the Living God, was imprisoned for a charge he did not commit. Yet he went with it, his faith unfazed by the unjustness of his situation. God saw him through the process, granted him favor in the eyes of men, and made him the second most powerful person in the kingdom. Daniel, for keeping his loyalty to God, was thrown in the hungry lions’ den. Yet nothing was said about him questioning God and His reasons for allowing him to go through what he went through. It was only when God revealed the mystery of His wisdom that He made known: His higher purpose was for the king himself to acknowledge no other God, but the God of Daniel alone. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, in the same fashion, went through the furnace heated seven times over for not bowing down to idols. Yet they did not go through it just by themselves, because God went with them. Let me underscore, these people were not spared from prison, dungeon, and furnace; they went through every possible hardship and fear and pain, but it didn’t mean God abandoned them or didn’t care for them. On the contrary, when all the pieces of the puzzle ultimately fell into place, it was revealed how God went with them each and every single step of their difficult process. This brings me to my next point: God is available to us. 20 Wholesale & Retail any kind of phone card: Smart & Globe SIM card Smart & Globe reload, Cellphone & Computer Accessories MP3, MP4 & download, Fashionable RTW and bags Fair & Lovely Cream, Anion Napkin with Negative Ion Call us on 2499 5858 Shop 279, 2/F Lik Sang Plaza, Tsuen Wan, N.T. Nagkukulitan at nagbibiruan. Bale love at first sight ang dalawa. Nagdate sila ng friendly date. Tapos, nagkakaintindihana na sila. May concert si. Solen sa Teatrino, Greenhils sa Aug 19 and 26. May pamagat na Solenn on stage! Wala pang complete entourage at principal sponsors. Halos naka-side view. Aguinaldo kaya nabuhay ito ng 94 years old. Aguinaldo. After one year saka namatay si Gen. Aguinaldo noong 1964. Dahil andito na si Nora sa bansa, ayon sa director na si Tikoy Aguiluz, maaaring lumawak pa ang role ng Superstar sa panahon na nagsasama sila ni Aguinaldo. friends International Magazine AUGUST 2011 27 friends International Magazine AUGUST 2011 HKPCG-PR-34-2011 Mandaue Children and Youth Chorus Captures Jury Prize at 2011 Hong Kong International Youth and Children’s Choir Festival The Mandaue Children and Youth Chorus (MCYC) again did the Philippines proud when they bested competition from different choirs around the world to snag the Jury Prize along with a cash prize of HK$20,000 during the Finalists’ Night of the 2011 Hong Kong International Youth and Children’s Choir Festival on 21 July 2011 at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. the Children’s Choir category in the Grand Prix competition of the First World Choir Championships in Korea in 2009. ternational Youth and Children’s Choir Festival were held in 2006 and 2008. Last Month’s Winner: Brian Sinacsi, Hung Hom friends International Magazine AUGUST 2011 31 friends International Magazine AUGUST 2011 BAWO Celebrates 21 Years of Good Leadership by Luz Narvaez It was in the springtime of 1989 when our founder and first President Mrs. Arcenia Tudlong, came out of St. John’s Cathedral and saw a group of our fellow Kababayans under the shade of a big tree. She joined them and because of curiosity, she shared them her “SEED” to plant and nurture it, so it would grow to give them shade in this former dollar colony. In a couple of months, a new set of officers were inducted. With a total of only 14 members, 8 are from Balili and 6 from Alab, Bontoc. These are the two close barangays from the only English named province in the Cordillera Region, the Mountain Prov. After two years membership soared and reach a record of 78 members. In the span of two decades, officers and members took terms in serving and leading the organization. To name our past President, the founder Mrs. Arcenia Tudlong , Mary Jimenez, Nenita Sadcat , and Jennefer Kitongon are now in the Philippines, Mylene Adace, Judith Adace, Cornelia Pooten are now in Canada, Cecilia Bagawi in Germany, Beverly Pooten in Spain and surely those who are still here Corazon Kis-ing, Rosemeniae Damogo and our current and re-elect Jenny Bagangan. The main objection of this organization is to unite all Balilians and Alabians working here in Hong Kong and to promote the rights and welfare of members. Internal and Social Activities: - Financial assistance to terminated members and mutual aids to members beneficiaries. - Credit and pocket money loans for members financial needs. - Joining bigger Organization in Supporting Migrants Rights. - Participation In Beauty and Popularity Contests - Involvement to Sports Activities - landslide victims of Kayon, Tadian Mt Provnce. Then we started a multi purpose building ALAB which is just halfwat waiting for fund and help from generous hearts.
