2013 Housewares Show Introduces
News Trends and Innovations
BY ANA VENNE
The 2013 International Home +
Housewares Show, which ran March 2-5
at McCormick Place in Chicago, Ill., had
over 2,000 exhibitors that featured
products in categories such as Tabletop,
Home Storage and Small Appliances.
Along with the vast amount of new
products exhibited on the show floor, the
show also offered a variety of seminars
and displays for attendees, among them
the Pantone ColorWatch exhibit, which
featured color forecasts for the year. Events
at the show included Global Innovation
M AY 2013
Awards, the IHA Innovation Awards, and
the Housewares Charity Foundation Gala.
A number of trends seemed to be emerging
on the show floor, notably the presence of
a large amount of juicers, food processors
and other small electrics. Hurom released
their HH Series Premium Slow Juicer,
which can make smoothies along with its
juicing capabilities. Other companies that
offered juicers included Fagor, which
introduced its new Enerjuicer, which can

sandwiches. Eggplant parmigiana. Falafel
and hummus. Roasted acorn squash with
brown sugar. Today, more and more
families across the country are preparing
many of their favorite dishes without
meat. A number of factors seem to be
driving this trend. In a down economy,
some cash-strapped consumers may be
eschewing animal protein in favor of
less expensive ingredients. Health concerns
surrounding the saturated fat content
of meat, as well as concerns about the
possible ingestion of hormones, antibiotics
and other chemicals are convincing
others to stay away. In addition, as
vegetarian ingredients become increasingly
available in markets throughout the
country, and as awareness of vegetarian
cooking spreads, home cooks are
simply more interested in experimenting
with meat-free recipes in the kitchen.
However, with so many consumers

Cooks’ Emporium Caters to
Customers’ Love of Learning
BY LORRIE BAUMANN
Should you happen to find yourself in
Ames, Iowa some Saturday morning, you
might want to wander over to Cooks’
Emporium, where, chances are, you’ll find
a cooking class taught by a local chef or
food enthusiast. Bring your kitchen wish
list along, because the $5 fee for the class
gets you not just the lesson, but also the
recipe, a tasting of what has been prepared
and a 10-percent discount coupon that’s
good on any regularly-priced merchandise
in the store.

Classes draw anywhere from 20-30 people,
which is about the limit that the space in
Cooks’ Emporium can accommodate, says
Owner Margaret Junkhan. Shelving units
in that part of the store are on wheels so
they can be pushed out of the way to
accommodate chairs for those in attendance.
The store as a whole occupies about 2,000
square feet of space, but once the shelf units
are moved aside, about one fourth of that
becomes demonstration kitchen space. The

Teflon Brand Retail Program
Sticks With Consumers
Take Care of Your Feet
with the FootMate System
In celebration of more than 50 years of
sautéing, scrambling and searing, the makers
of DuPont™ Teflon® nonstick coatings have
launched a new marketing campaign.
“Nothing Messes With It” is the articulation
of how the superior durability, release and
reliability of Teflon nonstick coatings create
peace of mind in the kitchen, because nothing
messes with Teflon nonstick coatings.
coatings, not even a metal spatula or
dishwasher,” said David DeVoe, North
American Consumer Marketing Manager
for DuPont Teflon Consumer Finishes. “In
the kitchen, Teflon nonstick coatings protect
pans from everyday wear-and-tear and
protect cooks from the stickiest situations
that threaten to take time away from family
and shorten the life of cookware.”
Foot care is a daily challenge, but the
FootMate® System makes optimal foot health
easy. It is a complete foot care system for
cleaning, soothing, stimulating and massaging
your feet every time you shower. The
FootMate’s wide, gentle inner bristles massage
your tender soles, while the stiffer outer
bristles smooth rough skin and calluses and
stimulate circulation.
Consumers turn to the number one brand
of nonstick coatings for great
homemade, healthy meals
and easy clean up,
because Teflon nonstick
coatings outperform and
outlast ceramic coatings seven
to one. The superior nonstick coatings’
performance and durability can also mean
less cookware destined for a landfill, less
energy used in manufacturing and less
cookware packaging to be discarded. Teflon
nonstick coatings have been affirmed safe
for use by regulatory agencies around the
world and are made without using
perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA).
Dupont is also introducing two
delectable new nonstick coatings
colors to its product line. The
existing 2012 colors, which
include Hot Chili (a spicy red),
Lavender Blue (a rich blue),
Champagne Gold (a classic shimmer)
and Ivory (an elegant neutral), will be
joined by Spicy Olive (a stylish green) and
Aubergine Purple (a vibrant eggplant).
The FootMate System
was used by Dawn
Harper, the 2008
Olympic
Gold
Medalist in the 100M
hurdles, to catapult
herself to a Silver
Medal in the same
event at the 2012
London Olympic Games. “The FootMate
System allows me to take care of my feet so
that problems do not occur. During and
immediately after heats, I use the FootMate
System so that my feet and legs do not
cramp. In the evening, I use it in the shower,”
said Harper. “Proper foot health is important
for an athlete as foot fungus, dry, cracked
skin and odors can affect performance. The
FootMate System has helped solve these
issues for me and was instrumental in my
winning the Silver Medal.”
“Cooking should be fun, and clean-up
should be easy. Fish won’t flounder and
eggs over-easy come off even easier, because

This month it’s our great pleasure to introduce you to Margaret Junkhan and her store,
Cooks’ Emporium, in Ames, Iowa. We met Marg in Chicago while we were there
attending an evening reception thrown by Wüsthof during the International Home +
Housewares Show, and it didn’t take more than a few minutes of talking to her to know
that the rest of you will be as interested in what she has to say as we were.
Over the past three decades, Cooks’ Emporium has been a fixture of downtown Ames,
a university town that’s about 36 miles up the highway from Des Moines, the state
capital. Iowa is, quite obviously, America’s Heartland, a place where people grow food
for themselves and for the rest of us too. They know where their food comes from,
because it comes from their home country, and they believe in treating it with respect.
We think that’s part of the reason for Marg’s success—she respects her customers and
their need for tools that will help them prepare their food thoughtfully, carefully, and
with due respect for the gift of having something good to put on the table. She’s happy
to share with them everything she knows about how to use the equipment they can
find in her shop to ensure that they produce a meal that will satisfy a hungry family.
Marg listens carefully to her customers. When they come into her store, she wants to
know what they like to cook and to eat. She gets to know something about why that
matters to them, and she honors their choices by taking them seriously and by providing
them with knowledge as well as tools for success. It’s no wonder at all that they come
back to her on Saturday mornings to teach and learn and taste. She isn’t just selling
kitchenware; she’s helping her customers feed their families and she’s serving their souls.

The Retailer Profile this month focuses on Cooks’ Emporium, which is located in
Iowa. This month’s giftware story is about vegetarian and vegan cookbooks. Despite
being a dedicated carnivore, I found the story to be intriguing. I look forward to
checking out some of the books that were mentioned. This month’s issue also gives a
little more insight into the changes that were made to the New York International Gift

Ninja®, a leading kitchen housewares brand
from Euro-Pro, is introducing the Ninja
Frying System, a new professional fryer
that cooks your food up to 40 percent faster
with up to 30 percent less fat absorption,
providing crispier and healthier results.
The Ninja Frying System’s
heat
combination keeps cooking oil at a uniform
temperature, so foods cook to light, crispy
perfection with less oil absorption. The
Ninja Frying System also makes cooking
a snap with hands-off frying. Ninja’s
patent-pending basket lid keeps food fully
submerged in oil so food is cooked evenly
through without having to be flipped
or turned.
“Consumers are always wanting to find
faster and healthier ways to enjoy the foods
they love to eat,” says Mark Rosenzweig,
CEO of Euro-Pro, the company that
develops Ninja housewares products. “The
Ninja Frying System brings new

With the new frying system, clean-up
could not be easier. The system has a
removable enamel oil reservoir and an easyto-empty oil spout, and the lid/oil reservoir
is dishwasher safe. The fryer is easy-touse with its easy-grip basket handle, large
window lid, cool-touch exterior and a
digital timer and display.

kitchenware. Small electrics come from
KitchenAid. “We feel that they are very
good quality. Not that other companies
aren’t, but they’ve been very helpful, and
they support the independent retailers very
nicely.” Cooks’ Emporium customers will
find All-Clad cookware, which they
appreciate for being made in the U.S.,
Junkhan says. “That’s something that
people are really looking for these days.
People really want something made in the
U.S.A.” NordicWare and USA Pan

kitchen itself has a two-burner cooktop, a
double oven, microwave oven, refrigerator
and work space. “Eventually, we plan to
remodel it and make the cooktop bigger,
giving our instructors more room to create,”
Junkhan says. “It’s not an elaborate kitchen.
It’s very simple and practical.”
The teachers for the classes come from Ames
and the surrounding communities. Junkhan
has developed strong business relationships
with the local chefs and works with them to
publicize their restaurants. The shop’s
Wüsthof representative teaches knife skills
classes twice a year. Local residents from the
culturally diverse community demonstrate
dishes from their culinary traditions. Local
cookbook authors often find their way to
Cooks’ Emporium to demonstrate such
topics as gluten-free cooking.
Most of the classes are taught as
demonstrations that are open to the public
on a casual walk-in basis, but occasional
evening classes are taught as hands-on
workshops. Those require pre-registration
and a larger fee to cover supplies, and
they’re limited to about 12 people at a time.
The classes draw an appreciative audience
from a community built around Iowa State
University. “Ames residents have a high
level of education. They are knowledgeable
about a lot of things. They want the right
tool to do the job,” Junkhan says of her
customers. “They want the best quality
product to do the job. They aren’t willing
to settle. They’re interested in learning
more about cooking and food and foodrelated subjects.”
The cooking classes aren’t just an idea that
came along when Junkhan was thinking
Holly Bowman and Elaine Oftedal
about how to sell kitchenware, although
they do help sell kitchenware: They’re the
beating heart of the business. Now and then
Junkhan will teach a class herself, but even
when there’s no class in session, she and her
staff spend a lot of time talking with the
shop’s customers about what they like to do
in the kitchen. That’s her favorite part of
the job, she says. “They all seem to have
interesting things that they’re doing in the
kitchen,” she says. “I hate days when I have
to get caught up on the paperwork. But you
have to do that too. I’m a people person.”
Junkhan got her start teaching cooking
classes in the local adult education
program. “Cooking was just starting to
become the ‘in-thing to do.’ Julia Child
had just come on to the horizon and
awakened interest in French cooking,”
Junkhan says. “After several years of that,
felt there was enough demand for a
kitchenware store. So I thought, let’s try
it.” At that time, there wasn’t a specialty
kitchenware retailer closer than Des
Moines, about 30 miles down the highway.
Thirty-two years later, the Cooks’
Emporium is a fixture among the other
independent retail businesses in downtown
Ames and continues to grow every year.
The secret to that growth is Junkhan’s
commitment to providing quality
kitchenware along with excellent
customer service. She offers free
delivery within a limited area for
wedding gifts and free gift-wrapping.
“People really appreciate having their
gift ready to go when they walk out
of the store,” she says.
When she brings new products into
her store, she and her staff give careful
thought to how those products can
be used to make the customers’
cooking experience better. And
always, she talks with her customers
about what they want to do in their
kitchens and how her products can
help. “We pride ourselves about being
knowledgeable about the products we
sell,” she says.
Margaret Junkhan
The shop’s stock is almost entirely
blocks and cutlery all sell well. “We just
carry a lot of different lines. It’s hard to pin
it down. Our customers’ needs are so
different,” Junkhan says. “One person’s a
baker. Another likes to do pasta. We have a
lot of different things, which makes it fun.”
Cooks’ Emporium is located at 313 Main
Street in Ames, Iowa. For more
information, call 515.233.4272, email
cooksemp@icsmail.net
or
visit
www.cooksemporiumltd.com.
And while Le Creuset is made in France
rather than the U.S.A., Junkhan offers
those products to her customers too. “They
appreciate the quality of it,” she says.
She sells a lot of linens, including aprons,
towels and dishcloths. “Everybody always
needs a new kitchen towel. It’s a fun way
to give your kitchen a bright new look or
a seasonal look,” Junkhan says. “Aprons
are a big seller now. People can wear them
as protection or just wear them because
they’re fun.”

SCI Scandicrafts Cast Iron Tea Set
BY ANA VENNE
I am always on the lookout for cute or
interesting items to put in my kitchen, so
when I had the chance to test out the cast
iron tea set from SCI Scandicrafts, I
jumped on it. This charming tea set has a
distinctly Asian look to it and includes a
teapot with a stainless steel filter, a
matching trivet, and a set of four matching
tea cups. The teapot and cups have a glossy
enameled interior to help prevent the cast
iron from rusting.
While I was a little too paranoid to use
the cast iron pot directly on my glass
cooktop to actually boil the water for
tea, I decided it would be just as good to
fill it with boiled water to brew and
serve my tea. I tried two different types
of tea in the pot, a fruity loose leaf
white tea, and a bagged green tea. The
pot’s filter did an excellent job of
keeping the loose tea from floating
around in the pot, and by extension out of
my cup. The filter also came in handy
when using the tea bag because I am the
kind of person who is clumsy enough to
lose the bag in the pot.
One of the things I really liked about the
teapot is that the cast iron kept the tea
warm for a longer time compared to the
porcelain teapot that I borrowed from a
friend for comparison. The downside to
the cast iron was that it became very
warm to the touch, but the trivet that
came with it definitely helped that
situation, meaning I didn’t have to
set the teapot directly on the
table. The handle also sits high
enough off of the teapot that
it doesn’t get too warm.
Because the set is cast
iron, it does require
different care from other
teapots. It must be
cleaned and completely
dried after every use in
order to prevent rust. Tea
definitely not be left in it over
night and it cannot be put in
the dishwasher. While this might be
considered a downside to some people,
the cast iron teapot will last a very long
time if cared for properly. Even if it
does get a little rusty, the pot can still be
used if cleaned properly. Thankfully
the set does include detailed care
instructions, so there is no need to
remember everything. I look forward to
using this set more often, as well as
showing it off to my tea drinking friends.

CLEAN’ COOKING FRY PAN
Everyone loves the flavor, color and
caramelization that frying and roasting
imparts to foods, but no one enjoys
cleaning up the mess that is left over.
Now greasy spatters and the messy
clean up they cause are a thing of the
past thanks to the unique pan and antispatter lid design of Beka’s Clean’
Cooking fry pan. Using scientific research
Beka engineers discovered that during
frying grease particles are always
projected in a straight line. Using their
data, the engineers went on to design
a pan with a gradient that projects
grease particles towards the center of
the pan. Next they designed a lid with
six small feet around its edge that rest
on the curved rim of the pan leaving a
gap through which steam can escape
and air can circulate. This design traps
the messy spatters inside the pan while
producing perfectly fried and seared
foods that are done to perfection. The
Clean’ Cooking fry pan is constructed
from long lasting stainless steel with an
encapsulated aluminum base for
greatly improved heat conduction. It is
available in both 9.5" and 11" diameter
sizes and includes removable handles
that easily clip on and off for easier
storage. It is compatible with all cooking
surfaces including induction.

just plain perfect and that is why
KitchenHappy™ is perfectly pleased to

Compact, efficient and easy to store,
Fasta Pasta is an ideal complement to
KitchenHappy’s popular single-handed

several attributes: Each is BPA-free,
dishwasher-safe and, most importantly,
completely made in America. Sally Berlin,
owner of Crystal Crate and Cargo in
Beulah, Mich., says sales increase when
customers learn that Fasta Pasta is
manufactured in the United States.
“People don’t trust plastics made out of
this country, especially when food is
involved,” said Berlin. “They want it made
in America by Americans.” Fasta Pasta is
appealing for another very important
reason: It has only two parts to clean
(both dishwasher safe) and eliminates
the need for strainers, pots or additional
sauce pans. KitchenHappy Product
Marketing Manager Scott Mahrle said,
“In my opinion, it’s one of Fasta Pasta’s
best selling points. It lets us all enjoy perfect

JEWELSTIK 1-2-3
Highwave of California always pushes
the boundaries of form and function.
Highwave continues its “Fluid Design”
in innovations for coffee and tea, wine,
spirits and beer. Function must include
a bit of fun. Light bulbs are the icon for
a good idea, but a beer could be
considered just as good an idea —
especially when the double wall design
(made for a 12 oz. beer with a head)
keeps the beer cold until bottoms up.
Highwave has over 30 patents, and
this year they will be introducing this
and other new good ideas. The patentpending 14 oz. double wall hand
made borosilicate glasses come
boxed, and are available in three
styles: clear, frosted and Eco.
The Baking Mat and the Pastry Mat,
two additions to Tovolo®’s line of baking
products, promise ease, efficiency and
more healthful baking. The Baking Mat
offers a more healthful way to bake
because there is no greasing required.
Baked items slide right off the surface.
Because foods do not bake on, the
mats clean with a quick wipe and then
roll up for storage. The mats’ three sizes
(Cookie Sheet 13.5" x 14.5", Jelly Roll
11.5" x 16.5" and Toaster Oven 12.5" x
9") can be easily cut to fit pans. The
Pastry Mat offers a generous 18" x 25"
nonstick surface with ruler and
conversions printed right on the mat.
Durable silicone fiber is tear resistant,
fade proof, and rolls up for easy
storage. Both the Baking and Pastry
Mats are food safe, dishwasher safe,
heat resistant and BPA free.
It happened over fifty years ago when
the lens shaped diamond knife
sharpener was introduced to the
professional trade. Harlan D. Hewlett, a
pioneer of wear resistant and abrasive
coatings, and founder of Hewlett
Manufacturing, was asked to improve
on the butcher steel. Knowing that a
butcher steel is only for maintenance
of a knife edge, Harlan decided to

ZIPLOC VACUUM SEALER
Ziploc, the #1 brand in food storage
(as determined by a 2010 Millwood
Brown Study) is redesigning the way
you store food! The new Ziploc™
Vacuum Sealer System is one of the
most advanced vacuum sealer systems
in America! The Ziploc Vacuum Sealer
System keeps food fresher longer, but
it can also save you time and money
as well as promote healthier eating
habits. Almost all users of vacuum food
sealers know that by sealing out air and
moisture, you prolong the time before
your food loses its flavor and nutritional
value. Additionally, they know that
vacuum sealing their meats and
proteins can prevent freezer burn when
storing foods in the freezer for long
periods of time. But what makes the
Ziploc System even more exciting is that
it can allow the consumer to save
money by buying in bulk and save time
by pre-planning their meals.

HOME CANNING USING LE PARFAIT
Le Parfait, French for “The Perfect,” has
designed three perfect containers that
offer alternatives for home canning of
fruits, vegetables, meats, sea foods,
soups, pickles, preserves and many other
food products. The company offers Le
Parfait Super Jars in six sizes, Le Parfait
Super Terrines in six sizes and Le Parfait
Familia Wiss Terrines in six sizes. Le Parfait
Super Jars and Le Parfait Super Terrines
both use a glass lid with a rubber gasket
and a metal wire structure with hinge
and locking mechanism for closing the
glass lid to the glass jar. The difference
between the two is the shape of the glass
body. The jars are rounded, and the
terrines are tapered. Le Parfait Familia
Wiss Terrines use a screw-on lid for closing
and a flat metal cover for sealing to the
glass jar. Familia Wiss is similar to the more
familiar North American home canning
jars but is heavier, more rugged in
appearance, and sturdier in use. The oldfashioned designs signify quality.

KITCHENWARE NEWS & HOUSEWARES REVIEW
EKOBREW REUSABLE FILTERS
J.K. ADAMS PRESENTS 1761
More versatile than a traditional box
grater, the Edgeware® Container
Grater is a great option for the
consumer with a compact kitchen. This
grater offers three patent pending
etched blade styles along with a slicing
blade. All of these blades store inside
the container. These stainless steel
blades feature the Edgeware signature
non-stick coating for easy clean up and
smoother grating. The V-shaped teeth
are designed to quickly and effortlessly
grate a wide variety of foods from the
hardest cheeses to soft vegetables. The
V-shaped teeth also easily grate soft
cheese. Their nonstick coating keeps
these softer foods from sticking to the
blades, which is a feature other etched
style graters struggle to provide. The
slicer blade of the Edgeware Container
Grater makes quick work of slicing
cucumbers, zucchini and carrots. The
clear container features measurements
in both ml and cups and offers a nonslip base for excellent stability when
grating. Food can be stored in the
container for use at a later time or to
serve at the table.
Suggested Retail Price: $39.99
J.K. Adams presents 1761, a new
collection of presentation boards made
from North American Ash and designed
in an early American style. Dorset,
Vermont, the town that J.K. Adams calls
home, was incorporated in 1761. The
current craftsmen and craftswomen at
J.K. Adams created five heirloom
quality boards in honor of Dorset and
the people who have shaped the
community since the town was
founded. These handsome boards
reflect a style that is truly early American
and embrace the simple elegance of
that era. The collection includes 1761ONE, which measures 23¾" x 19¼"; 1761TWO, which measures 23¾" x 10";
1761-THREE, which measures 20½" x 16";
1761-FOUR, which measures 20" x 16"
and 1761-FIVE, which measures 18½" x
14½". For people who appreciate
beautiful wood and who strive to use
natural materials in their homes, a 1761
board is a must-have. The boards have
been enhanced with a locally made
driftwood teak oil finish so they will last
for years. If cared for properly, these
boards can be handed down to family
members. Over time, the boards will
develop their own patina. The boards
can be occasionally treated with a
food-grade wood mineral oil. Designed
for food presentation and food
preparation, each design provides a
lovely backdrop for serving breads,
cheese, crackers, fruits and more.

EDGEWARE CONTAINER GRATER
Ekobrew started with a simple goal in
mind: to offer an eco-friendly and
money saving solution for single serve
coffee users that is easy to use. The
Ekobrew is a single unit that does not
need assembly or require the filter
holder to be removed. Ekobrew’s flat
bottom makes filling and cleaning easy.
The product is offered in two styles:
Classic (plastic) and Elite (stainless
steel). Both are reusable filters made
specifically for users of the Keurig® single
serve brewing system. The most
compelling feature of the Ekobrew is
cost savings. Users of the product save
on average 70 percent over K-Cup
packs. The Ekobrew is also an ecofriendly option, given that there are no
disposable plastic or foil cups to throw
away. Used K-Cup packs are nonbiodegradable, and there are currently
over 5 billion K-Cups in landfills. Eko
Brands is very proud to be the only
maker of reusable filters that are “Made

Nifty keeps a very close eye on all new
concepts that hit the market. The
company led the way into the single
serve coffee accessory arena all the
way back in 2004. More recently, Nifty
has been paying close attention to
Soda Stream, the home soda maker
that has taken the beverage market
by storm. Soda Stream is a way for
consumers to make quality soda in the
comfort of their own home, while saving
money and helping to keep the
environment clean. While conducting
their research of the Soda Stream
beverage maker, Nifty saw a great
opportunity. After researching common
problems consumers had with the
system, Nifty came up with a great
solution to the constant problem of
sticky overflow that consumers were
experiencing when they were filling their
soda bottles with the syrup. Nifty
created a pump that will fit the Soda
Stream Syrup bottles. The pump is
designed to pump the exact amount
of syrup needed to create the ideal mix
of syrup to carbonated water. And
because there are three separate soda
bottle sizes that all require different levels
of syrup, Nifty printed the ratios of pumps
per bottle size on top of the pump.

3-IN-1 GRATER:
YOUR NEW KITCHEN ASSISTANT
The 3-in-1 Grater is a convenient multipurpose kitchen tool to grind fresh
herbs, grate whole cloves of garlic and
shred cheese by just changing the
blade set. Each blade is engraved to
indicate its assembly position and
function. The oversized handle is
ergonomically designed and silicone
coated for easy gripping. The entire
unit is top-rack dishwasher safe. To
grate herbs there are two blades that
work to prevent pulverizing leafy herbs
into a ground paste, as is the case with
some other herb grinders. Grinding
garlic can be a messy task that leaves
everything scented with its potent odor,
but the 3-in-1 Grater is large enough to
fit plenty of garlic for any recipe. The
shredding/slicing blade is unique in that
with just the turn of the wrist it transforms
from a shredder (by turning clockwise)
to a slicer (by turning counterclockwise). It becomes less of a chore
to have freshly grated cheese for soups
and salads or finely chopped nuts and
chocolate for dessert toppings. The
possibilities are truly endless with the 3in-1 Grater. Anything you could do with
your standard hand grater you can do
with the 3-in-1 Grater, but with less mess.

PLASTIC PUSH UP MOLDS
Martellato is introducing a practical
system for making ice cream treats that
can be enjoyed all the way to the
bottom! Each Push Up Mold includes a
disposable cap, a 3.043 oz. cylindrical
chamber that measures 3-3/16" x
1-7/8" and a stem that is 3-3/4" long.
Martellato’s Push Up Molds offer a great
way to prepare, serve and eat dessert.
The stem of this plastic cup is joined to
a disk that you push from beneath,
raising the food as you eat it. The Push
Up Mold comes disassembled, but
attaching the parts is a cinch. First you
insert the stem in the disk. Then you
push those connected parts, stem first,
inside the cup. A stand can help you
prepare a bunch of cream desserts at
once. When you have finished filling
the cups, put on their lids, and freeze
the desserts in a blast chiller.

JAR OPENER
& TRIVET
Andreas Jar
Openers are
fun, functional and a
must for anyone opening
stubborn jars in the
kitchen, workshop or boat. Jars lids stick
for all kinds of reasons—heat
especially—and Andreas Jar Openers
give you that extra edge because these
silicone encapsulated fabric trivets grab
lids and do not let go. Leverage is
important and so is grip, and these jar
openers, with their natural non-slip
properties, let you use less force and
more torque. Andreas Jar Openers stick
to metal and glass, making storage
easy. Still, as the jar openers are great
looking, there is no need to hide them
away in a drawer. Always handy, always

cookbooks
Cookbooks
(Cont. from Page 1)
accustomed to placing meat at the
center of each meal, for many, creating a
satisfying vegetarian plate can still be a
challenge. For this reason, vegetarian and
vegetable-focused cookbooks are in
demand, both by those looking to punch
up their own mealtime repertoires, and for
those looking for thoughtful gifts for
culinarily-inclined loved ones. Several
recent and upcoming releases fall into this
growing genre:
Mr. Wilkinson’s Vegetables
By Matt Wilkinson
Wilkinson’s beautiful illustrated tome extolling the virtues
of flavorfully prepared vegetable dishes draws you in from
the moment you set eyes on its graphic cover. Subtitled
“A Cookbook to Celebrate the Garden,” this book truly
revels in what the land has to offer. The text is divided
among 24 popular vegetables, including everything from
corn to fennel. It features over 80 recipes, as well as more
general information on the produce itself and how best it
should be prepared. In the end, however, it is likely to be
the clever artistic sketches and bold, colorful photographs
that ultimately make this text leap off store shelves.
Meatless
From the kitchens of Martha Stewart Living
For decades, home cooks have voraciously devoured
everything doyenne of domesticity Martha Stewart has to
offer. Yet despite dozens of cookbooks sporting Stewart’s
moniker, it was not until this year that she introduced an
entirely meat-free text. Martha Stewart fans will delight
in this edited collection of the favorite vegetarian recipes
from Martha Stewart Living magazine. The range of
recipes included as well as the ease of use of the collection
is exactly what cooks have come to expect from the Martha
Stewart family of cookbooks. And a foreword to the text
penned by Stewart herself sweetens the deal.
Betty Goes Vegan
By Annie and Dan Shannon
Ever wonder what Betty Crocker, mid-century icon of
American comfort food, would have done if she had been
unable to incorporate animal products into her recipes?
The answer is elucidated in this wildly creative cookbook
from Annie and Dan Shannon that re-imagines recipes
from one of the most popular culinary texts of all time,
The Betty Crocker Cookbook, from a vegan perspective.
Betty Goes Vegan is sure to be a favorite both among
those looking for accessible vegan recipes for their families
and among cookbook collectors who will not be able to
resist such an original work.
Vegetable Literacy
By Deborah Madison
One of the most respected vegetarian cookbook authors,
Deborah Madison, recently launched her latest collection
of meat-free recipes. Vegetable Literacy is two books in
one. It is at once an impassioned study of vegetables
themselves and an expansive collection of almost 400
vegetarian recipes. Madison’s text will especially delight
vegetable connoisseurs and farmer’s market explorers,
with its recipes for more exotic garden fare. Inside, readers
will find recipes for corn, carrots and asparagus, but also
sunchokes, salsify and epazote. As produce like this becomes more and more available
to home cooks everywhere, Vegetable Literacy is destined to be a must have for those
who love to experiment with new ingredients.
The Fresh 20 Cookbook
By Melissa Lanz
The Fresh 20, created by working mother Melissa
Lanz, is a popular budget-friendly meal planning s
ervice that provides users with recipes for simple, healthy
and unprocessed dishes using just 20 fresh, seasonal
ingredients each week. Now, for the first time, Lanz is
offering devotees of the Fresh 20 service, as well as
newcomers to her philosophy, a full length cookbook,
providing families an inspiring, easy and waste-free
approach to meal planning and preparation.
Although not strictly vegetarian, The Fresh 20
Cookbook includes 60 vegetarian and vegan recipes,
making it ideal for meat eaters trying to incorporate more meat-free meals into
their mealtime rotation.
Eat Your Vegetables
By Joe Yonan
Reaching out to the single home cook who wants to
experiment with vegetarian and vegan cooking for
one, Washington Post food and travel editor Joe
Yonan has created a unique collection of recipes
designed specifically with smaller portions in mind.
The book contains over 80 delectable recipes sure to
please both vegetarians and meat-eaters alike.
However, it is not just the recipes that set Eat Your
Vegetables apart from similar cookbooks, but rather it is
Yonan’s smart, humorous essays on the evolution of
vegetarianism in this country that truly make this book a must-read.

New York Market Gets
New Look, New Name
BY LORRIE BAUMANN
The New York International Gift Fair is
changing more than just its name—it’s
getting a whole new style makeover.
The gift fair has changed its name to NY
NOW, the Market for Home & Lifestyle,
the culmination of a three-year
reorganization that will refocus the
marketplace toward a broader range of
merchandise in response to changes in
greater market realities. “Increasingly, there
is demand for, and a supply of, a broader
range of design-driven fashion-forward
home and lifestyle product,” said Christian
Falkenberg, NY NOW Director and
Senior Vice President of GLM, the show’s
owner. “Gourmet housewares is, in fact, a
perfect example of category which has
exploded in recent years and is more
accurately presented under the ‘home and
lifestyle’ banner than the ‘giftware’ banner.”
as the excitement and energy of the city
itself. The show’s managers understand that
its New York location is very definitely a
draw when buyers are deciding which
markets they’ll attend throughout the
course of the year. “We feel that the new
name not only better reflects the resources
that the show offers, but also conveys the
imperative of participation in this market,”
Falkenberg said.
“The show’s reorganization into four
collections—Home, Lifestyle, Handmade
and New—and the repositioning of related
resources not only will reinforce the depth
and breadth of resources in the New York
Market, but will also better reflect the way
retailers are shopping and sourcing today,”
he added.
As part of the reorganization, the Gourmet
Housewares Show, incorporated into the gift
fair three years ago as an annual event at the
August show, will now become part of the
NY NOW Home collection of vendors,
which will put the gourmet housewares
merchandise next to home furnishings, home
textiles, decorative accessories, and tabletop
vendors. These home decor and home
fashion suppliers will flow into the Tabletop
+ Gourmet Housewares category, featuring
a wide array of home textiles for kitchen and
dining, home entertaining resources, specialty
tabletop and gourmet kitchenware, according
to GLM. Notable brands exhibiting in the
category at the upcoming August show will
include Arte Italica, Juliska, Kim Seybert,
Lifetime Brands/Savora, Mary Jurek, Match,
Michael Aram, Mottahedah, Nespresso,
Vietri, Zak Designs and Zyliss.
The intention behind the new name was
to celebrate the show as a part of New
York’s standing as a trend-leader in design,
fashion and international appeal, as well
Several design-driven gourmet suppliers,
including blomus, Chilewich, iittala,
Joseph Joseph, Menu, Mydrap, Stelton

can bring the bar home with the
introduction of the Bar10der™—the first

(1/2 oz. and 1 oz. sizes), zester, knife, stirrer,

form a bridge between the Tabletop +
Gourmet Housewares and the Accent on
Design collections within the Home
market. “This adjacency, which began with
the integration of the Gourmet
Housewares Show into the New York
market three years ago, is deliberate and
designed to enhance complementary
buying opportunities,” Falkenberg said.
NY NOW Home will be presented on
Level 3 of the Jacob K. Javits Convention
Center and will include about 1,200
vendors. NY NOW Handmade will be
presented in Javits Center North and the
Level 4 Galleria and will feature nearly
500 designer-makers and global import
resources. The NY NOW New collection
will be housed at Pier 94, where these newto-market vendors will showcase a crosscategory collection of home and lifestyle
products. Giftware, along with personal
care, stationery, fashion accessories and
children’s products will now be shown on
Level 1 of Javits Center as the NY NOW
Lifestyle market, which will include 1,100
vendors on an exhibit floor that’s been
engineered to maximize cross-category
shopping opportunities for retailers.
With the reorganization, the Tabletop +
Gourmet Housewares collection will
become a regular twice-yearly part of NY
NOW rather than following the Augustonly schedule of the past. “Suppliers who
entered the market in 2011 have had great
success cross-marketing to the show’s
independent retailer base,” Falkenberg said.
“They are looking for visibility in this
market twice a year, and we’re glad to be
able to provide that opportunity.”
