Pot + Pantry Offers Both
Gently Used and New Kitchenware
BY LORRIE BAUMANN
Donna Suh founded Pot + Pantry in
2010 with an idea that shoppers who’d
buy used books or used clothing might
also be willing to consider buying
gently used kitchenware. The past two
years have proven her right, and Pot +
Pantry is still going strong in San
Francisco’s Mission District.
“I think San Francisco’s particularly
receptive to second-hand goods, partly
because it’s so expensive to live here,” Suh

idea of second-hand cookware appealing,
so it’s not for everybody, but I can see it

Most of the kitchenware that Suh sells in
Pot + Pantry is new, the basic cooking

Panasonic Announces New Line of
Stylish Small Kitchen Appliances
Panasonic, a leader in consumer electronics
technology, recently announced the launch
of the Panasonic Breakfast Collection, a new
range of small kitchen appliances, including
a toaster, coffee maker and kettle. Featuring
bold and ambitious design aesthetics, the
Panasonic Breakfast Collection offers new
form and functionality to kitchen appliances.
“With our new Breakfast Collection,
Panasonic aimed to create functional small
kitchen appliances that offered sleek, modern
looks for today’s kitchens,” said Nicholas
Monaco, Product Manager, Small
Appliances, Panasonic Consumer Marketing
Company of North America. “Instead of
storing a toaster or coffee maker when they
aren’t in use, the Panasonic products were
designed to stand out and become a part of
a consumer’s kitchen.”
The Panasonic NT-ZP1 Toaster is designed
with transparent glass and stainless steel,
adding a touch of elegance to the kitchen.
The toaster includes seven browning levels,
as well as reheat and defrost indicators, all
displayed directly onto the glass front in blue
LED lights. Convenient controls allow for
easy selection of menu items. As Panasonic
knows that not all bread slices are the same,
the Panasonic Toaster is equipped with ultrawide bread slots to fit even thicker styles of
bread or bagels. The device offers a built-in
warming rack, ideal for keeping buns and
croissants warm prior to eating. The seven
browning levels allow users to perfectly toast
bread to their desired taste. And a reheat and
defrost function makes it quick and easy to
toast frozen foods or leftovers.
The Panasonic NC-ZF1 Coffee Maker fuses
well-engineered design with modern
functionality. Featuring a strong cubic shape
and boasting a high-quality stainless steel
and glass finish, the Panasonic Coffee Maker
complements any kitchen style. For single
users or families who enjoy different strengths
of coffee, the Aroma Selector allows for the
easy adjustment of water flow into the pot,
making
coffee
stronger or milder.
This
function
allows multiple
users to purchase
the same coffee
grinds but get a
different pot taste
based on their
needs. An 8-cup
capacity double
walled stainless
steel carafe will
help keep coffee
warm and fresh,
and an automatic
shut-off function
provides a safety
guard for users
who may forget to
turn off the pot.
The Panasonic
Coffee Maker also features an easy-to-see
water level gauge on the exterior, transparent
blue LED to indicate power and a convenient
paperless filter.
Finally, the Panasonic NC-ZK1 Kettle offers
users a quick and easy way to boil water,
without waiting minutes for
their traditional tea kettle to
heat up on the stove. With
a 1.4-L water capacity, the
Panasonic Kettle is designed
with high-quality stainless
steel on both the interior
and exterior, which can help
keep water warm longer. A
pop open top makes filling
water a cinch, and an
ergonomic handle and spout
makes it easy to pour water
without spilling. The
Panasonic Kettle is also
equipped with a washable
scale filter to prevent scale
particles from entering a
user’s drinking water.
Family-friendly features
include a cool-touch exterior
and automatic shut-off.
The Panasonic Breakfast Collection
appliances will be available in May in two
color options: violet and smoke. Pricing and
availability will be announced prior to the
ship date.

RETAILER PROFILE
Greetings!
As this issue of Kitchenware News & Housewares Review goes to print, editor Ana
Venne has just returned from the IHA’s preview of this spring’s International
Home + Housewares Show bubbling with enthusiasm about the outlook for March
and also ready to get right back onto another plane to head back to New York for
the New York International Gift Fair.
Meanwhile most of the rest of our editorial staff is away in San Francisco for the
National Association for the Specialty Food Trade’s Fancy Food Show along with
editor Rocelle Aragon from Kitchenware News & Housewares Review sister publication,
Gourmet News. What these shows share is a sense of excitement about helping
consumers make their houses and apartments into homes that shelter, nurture, and
comfort their residents’ spirits as well as their bodies. The sad events of the past few
weeks have made it abundantly clear that many Americans are in need of nurturing
and spiritual solace, and in providing them with the means of achieving that, we are
pursuing a high calling indeed.
After the Fancy Food Shows each year, the vendors donate enormous amounts of
their products to the hungry in the shows’ host cities, and this outpouring of
charity as well as the joy and the enthusiasm with which it is given is a reminder
that amidst all the conflict and turmoil of 21st Century life, those of us who work
in these industries are still noble creatures pursuing noble goals as we care not only
for our own families but also for all the families who need safe and comfortable
homes as well as good food to eat and the means of preparing it.

Thanks for picking up another issue of Kitchenware News & Housewares Review. I
can’t believe it’s already the second issue of the year! This issue was being put
together as I was coming home from the IHHS press preview and getting ready to
head back out for the NYIGF, so I am glad that it actually made it out! The IHHS
press preview has gotten me really excited to see what everyone brings to the show
in Chicago.

The Housewares Show Preview Supplement in this issue should hopefully get you
excited for the show, with a sneak peek of a few of the awesome products that
exhibitors will be showcasing. There are a lot of fun and colorful products this year,
some in bright jewel tones, while others are in pastel or neon. The Barware Buyers
Guide also has a lot of cool products to offer. I particularly like the parrot-shaped
corkscrew by Alessi.
Back issue orders must be paid in advance by check.

Vessel Drinkware
President
BY ANA VENNE
Q: Tell us a
little about Vessel
Drinkware.
A: oneVessel by
Vessel Drinkware is
based in Seattle, WA. Our in-house
graphics design team sets the direction
and tone for the designs and categories
we offer the marketplace.
Q: Can you tell us a little about the
products you are introducing at IH+HS
this year?
A: This year at IH+HS we will be
introducing a few new items. First, we
have our all-new double wall fruit infuser.
This piece is intelligently designed to
provide the ultimate refreshment on the
hottest of summer days. The removable
infuser and straw make the piece versatile
enough to use for hot drinks on those
cold days as well. We are also introducing
a redesigned version of our popular 16 oz.
double wall glass tea tumbler. Finally,
we have our 360 sealing coffee tumbler,
and our flip up lid for our acrylic double
wall cup.
Q: What sort of trends do you expect will
be big this year?
A: In the state of the current economy, I
expect that we will be seeing customers
focusing on quality, value, longevity, and
customer experience. We take great pride
in our execution of each of these categories
and I believe that companies like ours,
that focus on providing great customer
experience will ultimately get further ahead
than those producers that cut corners
manufacturing their products to provide a
lesser quality product at a lower price.
Q: What sort of trends influence product
development?
A: The Art of Hydration® is about
providing our customers with great designs
on functional drinkware. We must pay
attention to trends in both the housewares
market, along with fashion trends that are
taking root as well.
Q: What sets your products apart from
everyone else?
A: Quite a few things set us apart from
the rest. First, our proprietary artwork can
only be obtained through our company.
Our domestic inventories are deep, making
our order execution lightning fast for all
of our customers regardless of size. Because
we have domestic decorating facilities, and
deep inventories, we are equipped to
provide outstanding service throughout
our customer base ranging from
independents to higher end retailers with
hundreds of locations. Of course we are
also equipped to drop-ship containers for
customers who require that of us as well.
Q: What is your favorite or most used
kitchen tool?

KAPOOSH KNIFE BLOCKS
What do you do when you have
knives from several different sets? For
the solution, think inside the block with
Kapoosh® knife blocks. The Kapoosh
freedom rods make this knife block
versatile, allowing you to mix and
match knives. The patented freedom
rod technology conforms to each
knife and holds it in place anywhere
in the block. The rods keep knives
sharper by preventing the blades
from scraping the edges like
traditional wood blocks. Kapoosh
knife blocks are also more hygienic
than wood blocks, as they can be
cleaned easily in any dishwasher.
Her choices about what used items to
include in her store are driven by her
personal aesthetic more than a formula
about what works or doesn’t work as used
goods, Suh says. “I don’t really know until
I see it. I don’t like taking second-hand
kitchen tools or plastic or something that’s
made in China. I can buy that new. It’s
informed by experience.”
When she does decide to buy a used item
for the store, she pays a standard 35 percent
of what she plans to ask for the item
herself, a price that’s informed by her
knowledge of current prices on Ebay and
Etsy.”I’ve always been selective about the

rounding it out with more new things,”
she says. “A lot of people who buy

Suh started the store after

Haeger NaturalStone
Premium Bakeware
BY LUCAS WITMAN
When preparing a casserole or a baked
pasta dish, I typically favor glass or
enamelware vessels. The smooth, shiny
surface of my enamel 8- by 12-inch pan
appears to the eye the perfect choice for
the gooey mound of cheese and creamy
pasta that I am about to bake. This is
because I want to ensure that what goes
into the oven lifts out easily with a spatula,
not clinging to the dish in burnt tatters.
For this reason, I was immediately skeptical
when presented with a collection of stone
bakeware from Haeger.
Haeger NaturalStone Premium Bakeware
does not have the visual sheen that
instills confidence that cooked food
can be easily lifted out of it. In fact,
rubbing your hands along the inside of
one of the vessels, it actually has a certain
roughness to the touch. At first glance,
one thing was clear: using this as a
casserole dish, I should be prepared for a
Your dish will come out evenly
cooked every time. In addition,
the Haeger NaturalStone
Premium Bakeware creates a
crust crispness that can simply
not be achieved with bakeware
made from other material.
burnt mess and a protracted
after-dinner cleaning project.
However, I took the plunge anyway,
using the Haeger NaturalStone
bakeware to put together a gooey
enchilada casserole.
Placing the filled Haeger casserole
dish on the dinner table in front of a
group of friends, I began the meal
with apologies. Explaining that I had
never used this bakeware before, I
equivocated that it was not my fault the
meal I was about to serve was sure to come
out of the pan a burnt mess. However, as
I finally cut into the casserole, I was about
to get a surprise.
One of the best things about the
Haeger NaturalStone Premium Bakeware
is its attractive appearance. The bakeware
features a cheerful, brightly painted
exterior. And the earthy stone interior
of the dishes evokes an Italian
country kitchen.
Slipping a spatula into my dish, I was
shocked when I pulled out a perfect slice
of cheesy, saucy enchilada casserole. It did
not stick to the pan! And in fact, the
Haeger Bakeware seemed to imbue the
edges of the dish with a perfect crispness
However, it is the bakeware’s performance
that is what really makes it a star in the
kitchen. The stone material heats the dish
remarkably evenly. You do not need to
worry about the center of the dish coming
out raw, while the edges are overcooked.
not achieved with my enamelware.
After experimenting with the Haeger
NaturalStone Premium Bakeware, my one
remaining hesitation concerns the
durability of the dishes. Stone is obviously
more fragile than Pyrex, and one needs to
treat these dishes with a certain degree of
care to ensure that they do not end up
cracked or shattered. However, Haeger
promises that its bakeware is dishwasher
safe, and as long as one take care of the
dishes, the company’s high quality
manufacturing should ensure that they
have a long life in your kitchen.
Happy to stand corrected, I am looking
forward to including Haeger NaturalStone
Premium Bakeware in dinnertime
rotation, a new option when I am looking
to impress guests with an attractive ovento-table serving vessel or when I want a
casserole, pizza or dessert to have perfectly
crispy edges.

The classic French Le Parfait Super
product line includes six sizes of jars and
six sizes of terrines. The sturdy, well-made
jars are mostly used for canning fruits,
vegetables and preserves, while the
tapered terrines are mostly used for
canning meat and fish pates. These jars
and terrines are widely used in France
and other European countries, but they
have achieved a new popularity in North
America, as interest in home canning has
surged. Le Parfait jars and terrines are also
popular for use as home storage
containers, for tabletop uses, and for
packing other items that do not require
a vacuum. For those who are not familiar
with Le Parfait, this classic design includes
a glass jar body, a glass lid and a metal
wire hinge and locking mechanism,
fastening the lid to the top of the jar. A
rubber ring is placed on the glass lid as a
gasket, forming an air-tight seal when the
locking mechanism is closed. During the
canning process, a vacuum is created,
which is maintained until the lid is opened.
For other products, the air-tight seal
maintains moisture or aroma in and keeps
moisture or infestation out. Replacement
gaskets are readily available, so the jars
and terrines can be resealed again and
again for a lifetime of use.

HUROM PREMIUM SLOW JUICER
Hurom’s newest slow juicer, the Hurom
Premium Slow Juicer, makes the choice
between a smoothie and a juice much
easier than choosing between a blender
and a juicer. This is because the Premium
Slow Juicer makes both! It juices
everything from fruits and vegetables to
wheatgrass, soy and nuts, but it can also
make thick, nutrient-dense smoothies.
Leave the new pulp outlet lever open
for juice, or simply close the lever and
juice cap and turn your favorite fresh or
frozen fruits and vegetables into
smoothies. Add yogurt or milk, and you
have a smoothie that will truly feed your
body. With the addition of the pulp outlet
lever in the new Hurom Premium Slow
Juicer, users can determine the level of
pulp they desire in their juice as well,
from practically clear to thick and full of
fiber. The new juice cap allows foods to
mix more thoroughly before pouring. It
also makes cleanup easy by allowing
the bowl to fill with water for a thorough
rinsing between juices. With all of the
capabilities of the original Hurom Slow
Juicer combined with the ability to make
delicious, nutritious smoothies, Hurom
Premium is now the only juicing tool you
will ever need.

PENSOFAL PLATINO COOKWARE LINE
Responding to growing consumer demand for knives that appeal to chefs and
home cooks with smaller hands, Wüsthof now offers the 6" Extra Wide Cook’s
Knife in the best-selling Classic collection. The precision-forged, full-tang Cook’s
Knife is crafted with a wider and heavier blade compared to standard models.
The additional heft helps to power-through chopping, slicing, dicing and mincing
with minimal effort. The wider blade surface also provides the perfect tool for
crushing ingredients, as well as scraping and transporting ingredients from the
chopping block to bowls and pans. The handle of the knife is the same size as
the larger 8" Cook’s Knife to ensure optimum power, while the shorter 6" size
blade delivers greater agility and control. All Classic knives feature Wüsthof’s
patent-pending Precision Edge Technology. Using guided, state-of-the-art lasers,
an exclusive Wüsthof technology, blade sharpness has been increased by 20
percent, and all knives now maintain their edge twice as long. Wüsthof’s bestselling collection for generations, Classic knives feature the company’s signature
bolster/finger guard at the base of the blade, which accounts for the cutlery’s
heft, and solid, balanced feel. Classic knives are crafted in Solingen, Germany—
Wüsthof-Trident’s manufacturing and headquarters base since the company’s
founding in 1814, nearly 200 years ago.
It happened over fifty years ago when the lens shaped diamond knife
sharpener was introduced to the professional trade. Harlan D. Hewlett, a
pioneer of wear resistant and abrasive coatings, and founder of Hewlett
Manufacturing, was asked to improve on the butcher steel. Knowing that a
butcher steel is only for maintenance of a knife edge, Harlan decided to
diamond coat the surface to facilitate sharpening and repairing of the knife’s
edge. He also changed the shape to allow more contact area with the knife
and made it hollow and thus more lightweight. From the food trade to the
meat packing industry, Harlan Hewlett’s “JEWELSTIK” was big news and a
market success. Over the years, Harlan’s sons have turned many new ideas
into more market successes, the most popular being the JEWELSTIK 1-2-3. Three
grits on one stick to give a razor like edge to any knife, dull as it may be. The
coarse, medium and fine grits all at your fingertips make this product a true
trifecta. Hewlett Mfg. is a family-owned and operated, well respected company
that believes in American made products. All raw materials, production and
packaging is done in western Pennsylvania. The Hewlett Mfg. product line
includes a range of sizes and a range of grits, making it easy to choose the
perfect product for your customers’ needs. Hewlett Mfg. will be introducing
new ideas at the International Home + Housewares show in Chicago in March.

WATERMELON CUTTING
& SERVING BOARD
Dexas enhances the watermelon
experience with the new Watermelon
Cutting & Serving Board. The overmolded TPE edge of this colorful
propylene board performs two
functions. The edge holds the cutting
board firmly and safely in place on the

keeping juice and seeds on the board.
The propylene surface is safe for all
foods, although it is hard to resist pairing
the watermelon board with fresh,
healthy watermelon. Watermelon leads
all bright red fruits in overall nutritional
value, particularly lycopene content.
Watermelon contains up to 40% more

shown to prevent cardiovascular
disease and some forms of cancer. The

Board is available in two sizes: 17.5" x

Never deal with warm beer again! The first and only in-bottle
beer chiller that keeps cold beer cold from the first sip to the
last—whether drinking from the bottle or as you pour into your
glass. Just freeze, insert into any bottled beer, and drink right
through the Chillsner. Made from aluminum, Chillsner uses the
same proprietary thermal gel as the famed Corkcicle. It is musthave barware for any beer drinker. Perfect for parties, tailgating,
or pretty much any occasion where beloved beers are enjoyed.
Chillsner is non-toxic and fits any 9" standard long-neck bottle.
Suggested Retail Price: $29.95 for set of two
This attractive wine glass is produced with a
classic design of patented optic ridges on
the inside of each glass, which “agitate”
the wine when the glass is rotated in an
counter-clockwise direction. As the wine is
agitated during the rotation process, a
chemical reaction takes place that results
in the release of unwanted carbon dioxide
from the wine and an immediate
heightening of the wine's flavor and aroma.
There is no need to decant or wait for the
wine to breathe. These claims are made
with the backing of scientific tests. Global
Amici’s aerating goblet is sold in an
attractive color gift box that includes a
detailed instruction sheet.

Highwave Float/Wine Preserve
Highwave’s Float/Wine Preserve is a unique, new, smart tool
to preserve the rest of your very good bottle of red wine.
Each vertical decanter and float is hand-blown and made
of borosilicate glass. Simply pour what you want to enjoy
some other time into the decanter. The FDA-approved
silicone element mimics a drop of wine bouncing off the
surface frozen in time. The float creates a blanket over the
wine surface eliminating contact with air and oxidation and
keeps your finest wines perfect for up to two weeks. The
bird’s mouth gives a fine pour when you are ready and the
hand-crafted float rides the wave when you pour that next
glass of wine.

A MONTHLY UPDATE ON THE GOINGS-ON AT INDUSTRY-RELATED SHOWS
BY LORRIE BAUMANN
As you head out for this winter’s trade
shows, remember that it’s part of your
mission to gather stories about the
products you’re buying to bring back to
your customers. The folks at all of this
winter’s home and gift markets have been
working overtime to make sure that they
have a wealth of experiences available for
you, from cooking demonstrations by
world-class chefs to collections curated by
leading designers, so take along a notebook
and a pen and jot down notes as you go.
Don’t count on your memories alone to
help you recreate the experience later for
your customers take notes! While you’re
doing that, keep your eyes and ears open
to pick up ideas from how the various
vendors are marketing their products to
you. Take notes about what appealed to
you in the various booths and what it was
that inspired you to buy.
Those thoughts are the beginning of the
conversations you’ll have and the stories
you’ll share with your customers back home
after you return from the shows. There’s

nothing fake or insincere about thinking
ahead about how you’ll share a story with
your customers and polishing that story
so that it’ll communicate clearly some of
the excitement you felt as you were
introduced at the trade show to products
you’ll be stocking in your store.
Telling a good story is all about
preparation, but that doesn’t mean that
you have to overthink it. Try it now: Take
10 minutes and write a message that
includes these three things: one main point
you hope that a customer will remember
after visiting your store, even if there was
no purchase today, one story about why
your new product is better than your
competitors’ and your contact information.
That’s all you really have to do. Don’t
struggle over it, just scribble something
down in 10 minutes.
The story is easy: You need a hero dealing
with a challenge. That’s all. So cast your
customer as the hero and tell us how she’ll
use your product to solve a problem in her
daily life. Or tell us how this product is

SHOW
At the end of 10 minutes, take what you
have and set it aside for a while. Overnight,
for preference, because a good story is like
a stew better when simmered slowly.
Then the next day, read over what you
have and then THROW IT AWAY. That’s
right, wad it up into a ball and toss it into
a trash can. Then do a fast rewrite from
scratch. You will ALWAYS find that this
second version is better and comes more
easily than that first version.
At the end of another 10 minutes, you’ll
usually have a product that’s good enough
to share around with your colleagues. Do
that and see what suggestions they can
offer you. Incorporate the best suggestions
into your draft, and then you’re done! You
don’t have to be a presidential speech writer
or a Dr. Martin Luther King-quality orator
to compose an effective message that will
communicate to your customer why you
think she’s going to love the products
you’re showing her. Just start by taking the
time to be clear in your own mind about
what you want most to get across to your
audience and then write just that.
