DARE WE FORGET Time Man and the Environment C reator of Hornsby’s Fountain in the Mall, Victor Cusack, arrived in the Shire last week from his north coast home to be interviewed by ABC TV’s Anne Barker for a feature on the future of his iconic artwork created in the early 1990s. Polarising at best, the Fountain is loved by many and disliked by some, but one thing is for sure: everybody has an opinion about it. According to Hornsby Shire Council who claims to have spent $600,000 on its maintenance over the last 10 years, “the water feature is a spectacular piece of art and an icon of Hornsby. However, it has only ever functioned as a clock for short periods of time.” It is plain to see that Council has increases as it ages.” One aspect of maintenance that wouldn’t cost the earth would be: the structure needs a good clean, and not from the sudsy soap detergent that some person regularly dumps in the water, but a proper wash to remove the algae. A powerful group, comprised of EXVLQHVVDQGKLJKSUR¿OHSHRSOH has re-formed The Friends of the Fountain in a move to promote the icon of Hornsby to its former glory … a combination of three waterpowered clocks – a 4th-century BC Greek clepsydra, an 11th-century Chinese water wheel clock and a 17th-century Swiss pendulum clock – plus a 17-note bronze carillion to found it a challenge to properly ring the hour based on a 250-yearmaintain the ‘water feature’ which old design found in an old English is under its care and maintenance; church. The whole assembly is the ‘clock’ component of the artwork PRXQWHGRQDÀRDWLQJSRQWRRQWKDW in the Mall has only ever worked for rotates every 12 hours giving a fourth short periods of time. Victor Cusack adheres to the fact that time indicator as a pointer sweeps past Roman numerals placed in Council has got the maintenance of the water around the fountain’s his fountain all wrong. “The fountain perimeter. needs adjusting so that it can function correctly. Council just doesn’t The obstacle to the appropriate repair and maintenance of the XQGHUVWDQGLW,WLVQRWDGLI¿FXOW SURFHGXUHWRSURSHUO\¿[WKHIRXQWDLQ Fountain appears to be a breakdown in communication between but council complains about the cost of maintenance, and so it remains … Victor Cusack its creator and Hornsby Council its carer. I’ve had a bower bird in the garden for several months now and after much patience, managed to get some interesting stills on the weekend. Looks like Mrs Bower has approved the ‘bower works’ although no sign of nest building anywhere yet. Richard Bonniface be denied that both these important aspects of modern life require proper maintenance, and that requires a budget to be allocated: neither one is more important than the other. Friends of the Fountain President and Director of Shores Restaurant, Paul O’Neill doesn’t mince his words when he says, “I talk to a lot of people here in the Mall, some who like the Fountain, some who dislike it but they all agree that it is a disgrace that it has been neglected by council.” Paul continued, “Where is the stewardship? Where is the custodianship? Council has an obligation to the ratepayers who paid over $1 million 23 years ago to build the Fountain, to maintain it. By withdrawing from the Fountain, council is cheating the people of the Shire.” Through the Friends of the Fountain and the Hornsby Chamber of Commerce, Paul will be pursuing a better deal for the future care and control of the Fountain. The words “’Dare We Forget’ emblazoned on the Fountain when it was created was indeed prophetic,” said Paul. Victor and the Friends of the Fountain are determined to present Hornsby’s unique icon as a primary tourist attraction, a place of celebration, a tangible reminder of climate change and our responsibility to our natural environment … Dare We Forget. On the other hand, Council maintains, “The water feature has always been an important meeting place in the centre of Hornsby and will remain so. However, nobody has ever used it to keep the time and it’s unclear if they ever will”? ABC TV will screen a feature on the future of the fountain on its national weekend program. Mt Kuring-gai Hall … All OK By Cllr Mick Gallagher of Mt Colah T he 2015 AGM of the Mt Kuring-gai Community Centre/hall (Mt KCC) held on Monday14th September saw the election of a band of dedicated local residents to the new committee for 2015-2016. Along with my fellow Councillor Robert Browne (B Ward) of Pennant Hills, I attended the AGM with Julia Morton, Hornsby Council’s Co-ordinator for Community & Cultural Facilities. Councillor Browne YROXQWHHUHGDVWKH5HWXUQLQJ2I¿FHU and declared all positions vacant. The new elected committee members are: Chair Stephen Floyd, Secretary Neil Gow, Treasurer Letitia WatsonLey, General Committee Ric & Donna Purcell. “I thank the Mt Kuring-gai committee especially Letitia, and our community for rallying together in saving our historic hall from possible closure,” said re-elected Chairman Floyd. “We still however need more YROXQWHHUVWR¿OOWKHSRVLWLRQVRI general committee members to inject new ideas and lighten the load.” 4 The AGM also saw the retirement of Judith Lightowler (nee Menkhorst) who had joined the committee in 1991 as Secretary, a position she held for 19 years. Judith and hubby Les have lived in their Mt K home since 1979 having married in Christchurch NZ in 1975. Some History … The hall has been used as a focal point for the community for many years and was originally a Methodist Church. It was sold in 1977 to Hornsby Council for $30,000 with a wish that it remain in use by the craft group and children’s play group. On Saturday 9 May the Mt Kuringgai Hall committee held a 2015 Community Day. The next Mt K committee event is Halloween on Saturday 31 October. Dear Bush Tele, RE: $312K Berowra pool money Many residents have asked the question of, what happened to the $312K federal grant for Berowra pool that earned no interest in 25 years, and what’s happened to the money from the sale of property in Berowra, including those along Berowra Waters Road? Well there is not going to be any Berowra pool as we can travel to QHZRQHLQ+RUQVE\,VWKLVIDLU" The $312K will be used for something ZRUWKZKLOHLQ$:DUG,VLWIDLU years of interest was not included? Some people suggest the council VKRXOG¿QLVKWKH%HURZUDFURVV roads park as planned 15 years ago; others suggest to continue with the pool while a different group of people suggest a covered sports/rec area. What do you the residents think the $312K should be spent on? The Mayor also stated the $2.8m from the sale of the Berowra land was used in the construction of the Hornsby pool with the rest of the funding coming from the shire wide levy. Berowra residents have traditionally been the ‘heavy lifters’ of the shire as far as funding facilities are concerned. ,QWHUHVWLQJO\+RUQVE\SRROLVWREH expanded because it’s full. What do residents think about this? Do you think at least a bit of the money from sale of Berowra assets should be used for something north of Hornsby? Review SUZUKI VITARA by Mark Higgins Compact SUVs are all the rage these days and the newest kid on the block is the just launched Suzuki Vitara. While the nameplate is familiar – it was first seen in 1988 – the Vitara is all-new and according to Suzuki blends SUV lifestyle and urban convenience. After sampling both models in the new Vitara range, the entry RT-S and the flagship RT-X, I’d have to agree. Both models radiate an eye-catching style with standard features including 17-inch alloy wheels, a reversing camera, LED Daytime Running lights and privacy glass. The RT-X also gets a panoramic sunroof and suede/leather interior. Inside it is extremely roomy, comfortable and quiet and Suzuki’s engineers have done an excellent job of separating the occupants from road and other outside noises. There’s also plenty of luggage space. The dash features an easy-to-use seven-inch touchscreen for the satnav, digital HVAC controls, entertainment system and Bluetooth. While the RT-S is front drive only, the RT-X gains Allgrip 4WD with four modes and greater off-road ability. The ride and handling of both models is very car-like, dispatching bumps easily and cornering with poise. Both share a very frugal 1.6 litre, four-cylinder engine that drives through a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic. Pricing is RT-S from $22,990 manual, $24,990 auto. RT-X auto is from $32,990. All Vitaras have loads of standard kit, a quality feel, excellent driving dynamics, and a five-star ANCAP safety rating. To me the Vitara RT-S manual was the pick of the bunch at outstanding value. Hornsby Suzuki Whether you're around town or up at the snow, nothing stands out like the all-new Vitara. With looks that are overtly capable yet undeniably stylish, this is a compact SUV with an in-built ability to turn heads. 'You are what you drive' takes on a whole new meaning in the all-new Vitara. Mix and match colours, interior trims and wheels to suit your taste and make your allnew Vitara as individual as you are. B O O K A T E S T D R I V E T O D AY. LMCT11646 Thursday 1 October 2015 7 HEALTH AND BEAUTY PRICELESS PEARLS BREASTSCREEN DOUBLE CHECKS MAMMOGRAMS By Ralph Estherby very time you have a mammogram at BreastScreen 16:WKH¿OPV are reviewed by at least two specialist breast radiologists. “Two pairs of trained eyes carefully studying the mammograms will detect PRUHVLJQL¿FDQWEUHDVWFDQFHUVWKDQ one pair alone,” says Dr Jennie Noakes, Designated Radiologist of the BreastScreen NSW Northern Sydney and Central Coast. This is just one of the quality measures in place at BreastScreen NSW to maximise the detection of breast cancers. To maintain quality, radiologists are required to read a large number of mammograms, at least 2,000 every year, to work for BreastScreen. The radiologists receive regular feedback on their performance, and must meet the National Accreditation Standards. The mammogram images also undergo regular quality checks to comply with these National I thought that I could get one more day out of it but I was wrong…I squeezed and squeezed, all that came out was a small amount of toothpaste, not enough to get the task done. I even tried using the back of the toothbrush to squeeze the tube a little harder but still nothing came out. There was nothing for it but to head downstairs and across the road to the convenience store to get some more. I have been travelling quite a lot recently and I always have my soap bag ready to go but I very rarely check it before I leave – usually I am in places that I can resupply but it always seems that something runs out at inappropriate times. I knew my toothpaste was getting low but I thought that I could last one more trip but it wasn’t to be… Making sure that you have enough supplies for your family is an ongoing job; the more people who live under your roof the more challenging it becomes. Everything in my natural world seems to run out, there are limits upon my resources and I cannot do much about that…but there is one powerful thing in my life that I have found to be without limit and never runs out. I have found that the provision of the Lord has never been diminished over the 37 years that I have known Him. Never once have I felt like I have been squeezing the end of the tube or drawing out the dregs of something that is even close to approaching its use by date… So I would encourage you that the next time you come to the end of something that is important to you that you recall that there is a supply and a supplier that never runs out and that he has enough for you. So when you need to call out to “Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think” Ephesians 3:20 Do you have a comment or a question? ralph.estherby@ gmail.com ‘Breakthrough Church’ meets at 9.30am Sundays at the Performing Arts Centre (Old Bowling Club) - Edgeworth David Ave Hornsby 9477 7222 8 By Dr Jennie Noakes E Accreditation Standards. “Behind the scenes, a team of experts including breast specialist radiologists, pathologists and surgeons, regularly meet to review individual cases, make consensus decisions, and monitor the overall progress and quality of the clinical service. Galston’s New Pool Nearly Complete The new learn-to-swim pool at Galston Aquatic Centre is expected to open by the end of October, weather permitting. Hornsby Shire Mayor Steve Russell said, “This is going to significantly expand the ability for local children to learn to swim, while it’s also going to free up valuable space in the existing pool.” “At the moment only one and a half lanes can be used for learner swimmers, which only allows for four teachers at a time. The new pool will allow for an additional 950 lessons each week.” The new pool is 14.4 metres by 8.7 metres, with a depth of 1.1 metres throughout, and will be heated to 31 degrees Celsius. “One of the great benefits of this new pool is that we will now have water temperatures that suit each of the groups who use the aquatic centre,” Mayor Russell said.”The new pool will cost $450,000, though it is not going to impact Council’s bottom line.” The extra capacity for swimming lessons will mean the new pool will pay for itself within 10 years,” Mayor Russell said. However, the rain had subsided by the afternoon to allow play for the seniors in their 2nd Round of T20s. A number of regular A Graders were rested to give several young up and comers a chance to show their skillset. Dan Boyle made the most of his opportunity striking a classy 60* which included only four dot balls. The score of 127 was run down with a ball to spare, but the benefits associated with giving youth exposure outweighed the match result. Richard Nash (47*) and Liam Kissick (2/17) were the strong performers in 2nd Grade’s narrow loss to Sydney Lions. Hammad Khan (77) starred for 3rd Grade as Vahistad Patel (2/11) continued his strong pre-season form to lead the side to a comprehensive 98 run victory. The young 4th Grade side had a tough outing against an older and stronger Galston-Glenorie side. 5th Grade however extracted semi-final revenge from last year; comfortably defeating WPHC by four wickets. Juniors now have a two week break as they head into school holidays. The seniors look forward to Round 1 this weekend, which is highlighted by A Grade’s first home game of the year at Berowra Oval. 1st Grade 5/127 (D Boyle 60*, N McNay 23) def by Sydney Lions 8/128 (F Perrin 2/16, T Marriott 1/19) 2nd Grade 9/119 (R Nash 47*) def by Sydney Lions 4/121 (L Kissick 2/17) 3rd Grade 4/170 (H Khan 77 B Adams 31) def Sydney Lions 9/72 (V Patel 2/11 C Moloney 2/14 K Baxter 2/17) 4th Grade 68 (L Silver 21) def by Galston-Glenorie 2/70 5th Grade 6/79 (R Tapner 41*) def WPHC Red 75 A Reminder: Milo registrations remain open.
