Off the Plan Sales
Friday 7 November 2014 was a stunning day as over 65 PGA
professionals took to the challenging Asquith Golf Club Course with
another 140 eager Amateurs as they contested the prize money on offer.
With the course in impeccable condition, top scores were expected but no
one could have imagined that PGA professional Ewan Porter would set a
new course record, shooting a faultless 64 ( 6 under Par) winning by two
shots over Anthony Summers.
Ewan currently plays on the Nationwide Tour. Porter, born in Sydney,
turned professional in 2001 and has played on the PGA Tour of
Australasia. Since that time has become one of Australia’s leading players
on the Nationwide Tour and has recently gained exemption on the Nation
Wide Tour in the United States.
“We have every expectation to host the event again in 2015,” said Sandra
Death, AGC President.

TO THE EDITOR
Dear Me,
HOW GOOD IS YOUR SMOKE
ALARM?
I was not surprised to read new
data that shows that nearly 1 in 2
NSW households have a nonworking smoke alarm, and nearly
1 in 3 households have no working
smoke alarm at all.
I found out this the hard way when
my cat knocked down a light onto
some newspaper, which started to
smoulder. I was in bed, but could
‘smell something burning’. Knowing
that my house is fully equipped
with smoke alarms, I thought it was
the smell of the neighbour’s wood
burning stove. A sniff of clean air
outside of my window disproved
this theory, but when I investigated
further, and the acrid smoke-smell
got stronger, I found the offending
lamp face-down on the paper, and
it was starting to burn. We quickly
dispatched the dangerous situation,
then wondered why our smoke
alarms, with their recently replaced
batteries, did not work.
To my horror, I discover the smoke
alarm to be faulty … it did not work!
Needless to say, all smoke alarms
in my household have been
replaced with new working models!
Please check your smoke alarms!

Brigade for help and advice

Sounds grim, but …
Disaster season has begun:
are you ready?
The Red Cross is urging all
Australians to make sure they’re
prepared for a disaster.
4 SIMPLE STEPS:
** it’s about knowing the risks in
your area,
** making a plan,
** getting an emergency kit and
** knowing your neighbours.
The last step is crucial because
it gives you an instant support
network. “When people know
others in their community they often
cope better in the long term,” said
Diana Bernardi of The Red Cross.
“Disaster can strike at any time, “
said Diana. “It’s vital people plan
and think about what they would do
in a disaster.”

“Online betting sites are becoming

Performs

Bowling Club
Former Red Wiggle understudy
to release debut ‘The Vinyl
Edge’ Album: Bim Bam Boom.
The popular local band, The Vinyl
Edge, will be releasing their highly
danceable rock and roll debut album,
Bim Bam Boom, at a free, all-ages
event at the Asquith Bowling Club
Hornsby, November 22, 2014.
A former Red Wiggle understudy,
Ryan Desaulnier, is the frontman and
rhythm guitarist for the local band,
The Vinyl Edge.
The Vinyl Edge is becoming wellknown for their covers of 1960s and
70s rock and roll music at local clubs,
and their new album contains seven
original songs written in the style of
classic rock and roll.
The album launch will be a free,
all-ages event, (minors must be
supervised by an adult), held at the
Asquith Bowling Club from 7:3011:30.
Ryan performed with The Wiggles
between 2001 and 2007, and
toured widely with the group around
the world. When asked to compare
his experiences with The Vinyl Edge
with The Wiggles, Ryan remarked,
“Actually, there was a lot of classic
rock being played while I was touring
with the guys. Every day at sound
check before a show, we would rock
out to favorite classics, Beatles, Chuck
Berry, The Rolling Stones, to a largely
empty venue. The cleaning staff really
seemed to enjoy it!”
The Vinyl Edge also features Pete
Thomsett on lead guitar, Yosip Lasek
on Bass, and Ben Davidson on
drums - all residents of the Hornsby
area. The band has been appearing
regularly at the Hornsby Inn, Asquith
Bowling Club, The Settler’s Arms Inn,
as well as numerous private functions
around the Hornsby Area.
The Vinyl Edge is also

$7 GP TAX WILL PUT
PRESSURE ON HORNSBY
EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT
Hornsby and Ku-ring-gai Hospital will be put under
pressure with almost 9,800 additional patients each year
forced into its emergency department because of the
$7 GP tax, according to the NSW Labor Party.
NSW Labor has released data based on NSW Health modeling showing
there will be a 27 per cent increase in emergency department admissions as
patients will present for non-urgent treatment due to the GP tax.
Official Bureau of Health Information data for 2013-14 showed 36,226
people visited Hornsby and Ku-ring-gai Hospital’s emergency department.
The NSW modeling shows 9,781 additional patients – every year – would
be forced to use Hornsby and Ku-ring-gai Hospital’s emergency department
(EDs) as they will be unable to afford the Liberals’ GP tax.
NSW Shadow Health Minister, Walt Secord, said: “The GP tax will mean
that waiting for treatment in emergency departments will get longer at NSW
hospitals’ emergency departments as extra numbers of people will turn up for
treatment for things they used to take to their GP.”
“Hornsby Hospital and their staff will be stretched to handle the flood of
patients that will result from the $7 GP tax.”
Earlier this year, the AMA website published a study which found that if an
additional four patients an hour turned up at NSW public hospitals because
of their inability to afford the GP co-payment – the duration of an average
emergency department visit would blow out from 5.6 to 8.5 hours.

HEALTH AND BEAUTY
PRICELESS
PEARLS
By Ralph Estherby
From the moment it
happened there was no
doubt about it: There was
no recovery and no way to avoid the
situation – I had suffered a critical
failure of equipment.
The piece of equipment that had failed
was not a computer, it was not a motor
vehicle and not a piece of machinery I
was working on… but it was something
much closer to home and in many
ways, even more important.
Everything was fine until the moment
of failure and then my whole morning
changed…I was helping a colleague
unload some boxes out of his car and
I did a deep squat to place myself in
the correct lifting position and as I did,
my pants split from just under my groin
right up to the waistband! I felt a
sudden rush of fresh air and a sudden
surge of embarrassment and concern.
Thankfully, as always, I had heeded
the instruction of my mother in terms of
the ‘clean underwear’ department and
fortuitously my undies were black and
so the exposure was not as bad as it
could have been.
The problem was that I was required
to stand up in front of a group on
this particular day and to give a
presentation…suddenly I was feeling
less than confident and more than a
little exposed.
I made my way to the bathroom to
check the damage and to try to come
up with a solution but my ‘MacGyver
skills’ were insufficient and no amount
of ‘gaff tape’ would solve this problem.
Then I remembered, just ten minutes
away, I had a suit in my office and
so all I would need to do was to get
through until morning tea.
So started a comical dance where
I always had to be the last to leave
the room, sit on my chair as much
as possible and if I needed to move,
to always keep the front of my body
pointing to the audience.
At the break I got to my office,
changed and returned and felt much
more comfortable for the remainder of
the day.
No one likes the feeling of being
exposed; we all have things that we do
not want others to see. My torn pants
made me think about the other things I
hide away, the parts of myself I do not
let anyone else see.
“For there is nothing hidden which will
not be revealed, nor has anything been
kept secret but that it should come to
light.”

Warning for
Pet Owners
Those of us lucky enough to be
living in the greater Hornsby
District know that we are largely
a community of animal lovers,
where our pet is a valued
member of the family.
So … we should care for our pets
as we would our children:
With temperatures expected to soar
this season, the Australian Veterinary
Association (AVA) is again providing
some practical tips to keep your
pets cool.
“Pets are just as susceptible to heatrelated illness as humans,” said Dr
David Neck from the AVA.
“Unlike people, who sweat through
skin, pets cool off through the
pads of their feet and tongue.
They need to pant to regulate their
temperature, and dogs and cats
with long hair (and short snouts) can
be more susceptible to the effects of
heat,” Dr Neck from the Australian
Veterinary Association said.
Ten top tips for dogs and cats to
beat the heat are:
· Make sure there is cool, fresh
water available at all times.
Leave this in a shady area
· On really hot days it might be
worth leaving multiple bowls
of cool water in the shade that
can’t be tipped over
· Keep an eye on older pets as
they will be more susceptible
to the heat, particularly if
they have problems with their
breathing
· Dogs love to sit in the sun, but
prolonged sun exposure can
quickly lead to heat exhaustion
and can cause skin cancers so
it’s important to provide them
with a shaded area
· One way to provide them with
relief from the heat is to fill
the kids’ paddling pool with a
couple of inches of water and
leave this in a shady spot for
your dog to sit in
· Tossing a few ice cubes in your
dog or cat’s water bowl can
help to keep their temperature
down and provide some relief
on a hot day
· If you don’t have air
conditioning think about
leaving a fan on during those
really hot days in the height of
summer
· Try to exercise your dog in
the early morning or the late
evening to avoid the hottest
part of the day
· Consider putting some treats in
the freezer. They can be given
to your pet as a pet popsicle
on really hot days. They’ll help
cool your pet down and give
Get to Know Your Own Skin
Australia has one of the highest rates of skin
cancer in the world. This year over 14,000
Australians are expected to be diagnosed with
melanoma. Melanoma can be life threatening.
However, if diagnosed early enough, 90% of
melanoma cases can be treated effectively.
It’s important to get to know your own skin and
to be aware of what to look for. The ABCDE
method of skin checking has been developed to

Preventing sun damage by following safe sun
practices is also important:
• Seek out the shade when possible and avoid exposure when the sun is
at its strongest between 10am and 4pm.
• Protect yourself with a hat, sunglasses and clothing.
• Choose a broad spectrum sunscreen with a very high sun protection
factor (ideally 50+) and reapply frequently and generously.
Hornsby Heights Pharmacy is committed to raising awareness of the
importance of skin checking and can provide you with more information on
the ABCDE method and sun safety. We will be hosting a sun awareness
event in store on Thursday 4th December 2014 between 10am and 12
noon. Come in and take home valuable information to help protect you and
your family this Summer.

them something to do when
you’re out
If you own a long haired dog,
consider giving them a trim to help
them cope better with the hotter
months.
“It’s important to take your pet to
the local vet if they are displaying
any symptoms of heat stroke such
as heavy panting, fatigue, drooling,
vomiting and diarrhoea,” Dr Neck
said.
The main thing is to watch your pets
carefully on hot days and give them
extra care to help them safely enjoy
summer.

Hornsby Celebrity
Franco Vallario turned 80 years
on 6th August 2014.
Franco was brought to Australia by
the government in 1958 to work on
the administration block of the old
Parliament House in Canberra. He
stayed in a hostel on Capital Hill
where the new Parliament House
now stands.
Franco really liked the Australian
people and saw it as a prosperous
country compared to Europe at that
time. He came from San Andrea Italy.
His family had worked in marble and
sandstone for 5 generations. Franco
was around the workshops from 9
years old.
Franco spent 5 and half years
restoring sandstone on the gothic
facades at the Sydney University.
He did the Greek Style Ionic
Corinthian Capital which is the
architecture on the round pylons on
the Mitchell Library extension - the
dream of all sculptors. His expertise in
marble and sandstone is renowned.
You can see more of his history and
works on YouTube.
