Troubleshooting Furnaces, Replacing Batteries, and More
With temperatures starting to fall now,
RVers are going to be having a moment of
truth—when they turn on their thermostats,
will heat come blowing out or…not?
Furnace problems can run the gamut from
the complex to the simple. Is it a voltage
problem, or is it a mouse nest in the blower?
You’ll find a detailed guide to furnace
troubleshooting in this issue that covers the
entire system, starting with the thermostat
and working through the other components.
RV Technician thanks writer Greg
Wischmeyer for this story and the
accompanying photos.
Next up is a story from Steve Savage
describing a simple approach to replacing
batteries in a battery bank. Replacing one or
two batteries might not be a big deal, but
when you’re dealing with six, things can get
dicey. Savage says he’s seen his share of
terminals melted on batteries when the
R
connections were incorrect. Try his method
for keeping track of what goes where and
see if it saves you time and headaches.
If you’re a certified technician, you’ve put in
the hard work and long hours to attain that
status – don’t risk losing it. Be sure you get
the continuing education credits needed for
recertification. There are more training
sources out there then you might think.
RVDA Service Consultant Tony Yerman has
started a list of offerings that qualify for
CEUs and will update it periodically.
Finally, RVDA’s convention is also a source
of training and CEUs. Check the special
convention section for what’s available. The
convention is Nov. 10-14 in Las Vegas.

Furnaces
Trouble Shooting Furnace Components
By Greg Wischmeyer
RVers expect heat to come blowing out
when the thermostat is turned on. It doesn’t
always turn out that way! This article covers
key furnace component requirements. With
all components operating, the furnace will
run as a complete system. While a short
article can’t include all furnace models and
faults, this article will help technicians
understand the individual components’
relationship within the furnace system.
Without backing up the electrical system
past the 12-volt circuit breaker, voltage
needs to be between 10.5 VDC and 13.5
VDC. Improper voltage can cause ignition
problems as well as blower speeds that are
too fast or too slow. Next, the thermostat
needs to be checked out. Many thermostats
last for years but some don’t. Thermostats
need to have voltage in and voltage out
verified.
What is power in RV terms? It’s the
available voltage and amperage to operate
the electrical systems. Demands on the
RV’s electrical system include the furnace.
Voltage at thermostat
Voltage at fuse
Some thermostats also send power to the
AC unit. The contact points and heat
anticipator strip may need to be cleaned. (I
once removed a dead lady bug from
between a set of AC relay points that had
shut down the AC on a 105-degree day).
Many thermostats draw 1.0 amp, and this
can be checked with a VOM.
(continued on next page)
Page 5
Blower motor VDC terminal
Thermostat contact points
and heat anticipator
All systems go up to this point? Time to
check the TDR (time delay relay). The TDR
should have constant voltage to the (+)
terminal and a good ground from the (-)
terminal. The TDR needs to receive signal
voltage from the thermostat to operate as
the relay that it is. A TDR is a normally open
relay and needs to close when activated.
Without the TDR closing, no VDC will be
present at the motor or blower terminal.
Additionally, the TDR will remain closed for
45-90 seconds after the 12 VDC from the
thermostat ceases. This will allow for the
blower to cool the combustion chamber.
(The 14 volts shown on the VOM are
coming from a separate converter used on
my bench testing.)
The blower is the lungs of the furnace. The
furnace blower motor is dual purpose--one
side draws combustion air in, while the
other side provides circulation. Ensure
proper voltage to the blower and ensure a
good ground. Checking the blower will
indicate if the motor itself is in good
condition. There may be restrictions on the
rotation of the motor shaft. Restrictions
could include dirt, lint, hair, nests or
restrictions on the blower wheels.

(continued on next page)
Safety components include limit switches
and sail switches. Limit switches are
normally closed and heat activated to shut
the gas flow down. The limit switch should
not be checked by using a heat source like
a BBQ lighter. Too much heat can change
the value of the limit switch. Check it with
the VOM, and if it shows continuity, it’s
good.
Fan control circuit boards or ignition circuit
boards often can be checked by module
board field testers that facilitate trouble
shooting of the “boards.” Most larger shops
will have these units.
Fuel is also needed for an RV furnace. On
an RV furnace, the electrical system
controls the propane entering the system
through the fuel solenoid. Starting after
1985 models, dual solenoid valves were
used. These are also called redundant
valves. The dual valve gives extra
protection against propane leaking past the
valve seals. Of particular importance on the
dual valves is the (+) and (-) connections.
The fuel solenoids should draw about 30-50
ohms through their coils.
Limit switch with VOM showing continuity
The sail switch ensures that there is proper
air flow from the blower before “closing” and
sending 12VDC for ignition. Sail switches
can malfunction because of blocked return
air grills, blocked or restricted ducts and
registers, dirt on the sail switch paddle
(weighing it down), and or a bent paddle.
Gas solenoid showing 42 Ohms
At the electrode, electricity meets fuel. The
electrode needs to be checked for a
cracked ceramic insulator. This could allow
a short. The electrode will also have a
remote or built-in flame sensor sending a
milli-amp signal to keep the furnace running.

Pressure drop test
None of the above trouble shooting steps
mean anything if there’s not enough
propane at the proper pressure. A low
pressure check needs to be performed if
inadequate propane is suspected. Also,
adequate pressure may exist but the supply
may be diminished due to a defective
propane regulator or restricted propane
piping. Check copper tubing, rubber LP
hoses and black pipe. Is there a blockage in
the furnace fuel orifice?

I hope this article will help the newer
technician “break down” the furnace
components for trouble shooting purposes. I
always grin when the simplest thing can
bring everything else to a grinding halt.

Batteries
A Simplified Approach to Replacing
the Batteries in a Battery Bank
By Steve Savage
When it’s time to replace the batteries in a
battery bank, there are two things that can
get tricky -- the batteries are hard to reach,
or there are a number of them.
when connections went awry, I got to
thinking that there must be a better way.
The first task is to ensure the cables
maintain the correct polarity. In other words,
to make sure the positive ends of the cables
go back on the positive terminals and the
negatives on the negative terminals. The
second task is making sure the cables are
connected to the correct battery.
Why are these steps important? If you’ve
been a tech for a while, you’ve seen your
share of terminals melted on batteries when
connections were incorrect. I just completed
work on a system in which the inverter went
to heaven when things weren’t put back on
the way they came off.
It might not be a big deal if you’re dealing
with a travel trailer or fifth wheel with only
one or two batteries. And at first glance, it
seems like it shouldn’t be difficult, but start
disconnecting six 6-volt batteries in
series/parallel connections do-si-doing with
an inverter/solar system or in a coach where
it’s tough to even see the battery terminals
and things can get stressful.
Having recently worked on a coach where
the tech lost track of what went where, and
then on a couple of rigs where the terminals
had been blown completely off the batteries
Page 10
In the past, I’ve tried labeling and using
colored wire tape but often found it didn’t
want to stay put, wasn’t always easy to get
on, and sometimes was hard to read.
Snapping a picture with a smart phone can
be helpful, but it’s not always possible to get
the phone in the best position. With a job on
deck done by a do-it-yourselfer with six
batteries mounted in two separate
compartments, I thought there must be an
easier way to label the battery cables
without first removing any of them from the
terminals. It had to be so simple that even a
tired tech could do it, and it had to be
foolproof. Here’s what I came up with.
Step 1 Unplug the shoreline and pull the
fuse feeding the inverter or converter, if
there is one. You can also throw the
disconnect, if there is one. This step
protects everything upstream from anything
you do downstream.
Step 2 Draw a simple sketch of the battery
layout and the terminal orientation so the
new batteries can be installed in the same
position with the terminals oriented the
same way. This is just boxes with a + or showing terminal orientation.
Step 3 Assign each battery a color that
corresponds to one of the colored wire ties
you have in your possession. For example,
with a four battery system, one battery could
be green, one blue, one orange, and one
yellow. There are dozens of different
colored wire ties available online, but you
can get enough colors to handle a fourbattery bank at any Advance Auto in a set
for under $10.
Step 4 Put a red wire tie on the terminal end
of each cable connected to a positive
terminal. Next, put a white wire tie on the
terminal end of each cable that’s connected
to a negative terminal. This step insures that
when it all goes back together, polarity is
maintained. (See photo on next page.)
Step 5 Just up from the wire ties that
denote positive and negative terminals, put
a colored wire tie that matches the color you
assigned to that battery. For example, a
cable connected to the positive terminal on
the “green” battery would have a red wire tie
on the very end and a green wire tie next to
it. The end of each cable would have two
wire ties, one noting positive or negative
and one noting which battery it connects to.
This step insures that not only is polarity
maintained, but the cable connects to the
correct battery.
Page 11
Once these steps are done--none of which
require you to disconnect any cables--you
can remove cables with impunity since, as
long as you put the new batteries back in
the same position as the old, there is no
way to mistake what goes where with the
new connections. I usually put electrical
tape on the cable end as I remove it to
avoid making it look like I’m arc welding, if
the end is still connected to another battery.
Once I have the new batteries in place,
when I reattach the cables, I don’t cut the
wire ties back until I have tightened the
cable to the terminal. That makes it easy to
not forget whether I have tightened a cable
down onto the terminal. (See photo on next
page.) Once tightened, I cut the tie back to
the fastening clip but leave the wire tie in
place. I leave my simple schematic with the
customer along with a brief explanation so
the next time battery replacement rolls
around, it should take even less time.
The wire ties stay in place much better than
wire tape, they require much less time than
labeling, and they’re simpler than trying to
follow a picture taken with a smart phone. I
have found matching cables and batteries
according to wire tie color completely
removes the age-old worry of what-goeswhere when replacing multiple batteries in a
battery bank. Now the only tough part of the
job is lifting those new batteries into place!

PASSPORT TO EXCELLENCE
New location, new time, new level of excitement over
this year’s RV Dealers International Convention/Expo
By RVDA staff
B
Adding to the excitement surrounding this
year’s convention is the
return of the RVBusiness
Top 50 Dealer Awards
after a 3-year hiatus.
etter timing, a new
location, and fresh
new workshops are
spurring early
commitments and registrations for the 2014 RV
Dealers International
Convention/Expo, themed
“Passport to Excellence:
Education and Training.”
RV dealers, manufacturers,
suppliers, and educators
will all convene at Bally’s
on the Las Vegas Strip from
Nov. 10-14 to participate in
the largest event of its
kind for RV retailers.
Excitement about the new
venue was immediately evident
when RVDA announced at last
fall’s convention that the event
would be moving to Bally’s. Aptly
described as “the center of the
action,” Bally’s is at the heart of
the famed Las Vegas Strip,
surrounded by the most iconic
casino properties, bright lights, and
street attractions that characterize
Las Vegas. Convention registrants
will have easy access to all the
nightlife the city has to offer.
And by moving the convention
to November – a full month later
than usual – dealers will be able to
bring more employees along for
training and education.
“November is better for our
dealers and will allow greater
participation by more people,” says
RVDA Convention/Expo Committee
Chairman John McCluskey of Florida
Outdoors. “Employee development
opportunities will be expanded, and
we’re aiming for maximum flexibility
so dealers can plan their schedules
to include the convention.”
The Vendor Training +Plus
program will be back – and
tripled in size – after its successful
debut last year. These informative
training sessions by industry
suppliers and vendors will take
place Monday and Tuesday.
Education workshops from Tuesday
through Friday will target the hotbutton issues that affect every
dealership department. Some will
be repeated so that participants
won’t have to choose between one
must-hear workshop and another.
In addition, workshops will be
shorter to keep presentations
super-targeted and engaging.
The convention’s expo hall will
be filled to capacity with the RV
industry’s top manufacturers and
suppliers of products and services.
Exhibit space is selling faster than
at any time since before the recession, reflecting the industry’s
renewed optimism and the keen
interest in RVDA’s annual event.
Adding to the excitement
surrounding this year’s convention
is the return of the RVBusiness
Top 50 Dealer Awards program
after a 3-year hiatus. RV
manufacturers nominated their best
dealers, and the honorees will be
recognized at a reception open to
all badge-wearing convention
attendees on the evening of
Wednesday, Nov. 12. These 50
individuals were selected by an
independent panel, based on their
commitment to consumer care,
business acumen, civic involvement,
and general professionalism.

If you’ve ever
visited a Disney

admired how
the always
cheerful staffers
keep things running seamlessly,
you can thank Doug Lipp, this
year’s keynote speaker. Lipp –

the training team at Disney
corporate headquarters in the

recognized expert on customer
service, change, and global
competitiveness.
In his presentation,
“Even Monkeys Fall from

Jayco: Roof Ladder on Wrong Side
Jayco Inc.is recalling certain model year
2015 19RD (TP) Jay Flight trailers
manufactured from May 19, 2014, to May
21, 2014. The affected trailers may have
been manufactured with the roof ladder
installed on the door side of the trailer. This
incorrect location does not have a
reinforcing backer to hold the ladder to the
trailer.
If the ladder doesn't have the support of the
backer, the screws can pull out of the trailer
wall when the ladder is used, and the ladder
may give, increasing the risk of injury to the
ladder user.
Jayco will notify owners, and dealers will
inspect the placement of the ladder and
install a backer if the ladder is installed on
the wrong side. Owners may contact Jayco
customer service at 1-800-283-8267.
Keystone: Faulty 120V Outlet
Keystone RV Company is recalling certain
model year 2014-2015 Hideout 308BHDS
fifth wheel trailers manufactured from
October 2, 2013, to August 8, 2014. The
affected trailers may have been built with a
120V outlet in the exterior kitchen that is not
part of the GFCI protected circuit.
An outlet that’s not part of the GFCI
protected circuit has an increased risk of
providing an electrical shock if an electrical
fault exists in an appliance plugged into the
receptacle.
Keystone has notified owners, and dealers
will verify that the outside kitchen outlet is
on a GFCI circuit, replacing it as necessary.
Owners may contact Keystone customer
service at 1-866-425-4369.
Starcraft: Inadequate Venting
Starcraft RV is recalling certain model year
2015 AR-One travel trailers, models 28P,
28R, 28U, 28V, 28S, and 28W,
manufactured from April 23, 2014, to July
18, 2014. The affected trailers are equipped
with the roof AC option, eliminating the roof
vent. As such, since there is no widow in the
kitchen, there is inadequate venting for the
gases emanating from the range.
In the event of a situation where the
propane gas continues to flow, if the gas
range cannot vent, an ignition source may
ignite the propane gas, resulting in a fire.
Starcraft RV will notify owners, and dealers
will install a range hood that vents to the
outside of the trailer.
(continued on next page)

Jayco: Inadequate Venting
Jayco Inc.is recalling certain model year
2015 Jay Flight travel trailers, models
264BHW (7V) and 267BHSW (7W),
manufactured from April 23, 2014, to June
4, 2014. The affected trailers are equipped
with the roof AC option, eliminating the roof
vent. As such, since the window does not
open, there is inadequate venting for the
gases emanating from the range.
Page 26
In the event of a situation where the
propane gas continues to flow, if the gas
range cannot vent, an ignition source may
ignite the propane gas, resulting in a fire.
Jayco will notify owners, and dealers will

window that opens. Owners may contact
