Casting depends on a wide variety of factors and the final result works like an intricate puzzle. While an individual might be perfectly suited for a particular role, there might not be an appropriate counterpart to support that choice. If the casting of one role changes, often the entire cast make-up changes to end up with a balanced final result that is in the best interest of the show as a whole. Casting can be affected by variables such as height, vocal range, physicality, “chemistry” with other actors, “vibe,” vision of the Director, etc. Casting teens and young performers in both adult and child roles also requires creating a “visual logic” to enhance the audience’s understanding of the story. Therefore, regardless of how “right” someone may be for a role that does not mean he or she will get it, or that they are right for it in this production. It is essential that students and parents understand that auditioners may not get the particular role they may want. It takes every role in the script to tell the story and every role is important, regardless of perceived size. There is as much to be learned (and as much fun to be had) as a member of the ensemble or in a featured role as there is in playing the lead. Not everyone can get the lead and students and parents should understand that not getting the lead is not necessarily a reflection of the students’ talents or abilities. Each show has very specific casting needs in terms of the type of characters, size of the cast, performance skills needed, etc. The size of the stage can also limit the number of people who can participate. There is not always a role for everyone who auditions. Sometimes a performer can be called back (asked to read from the script for a specific role,) but if that role goes to someone else, that performer may not be offered any role at all. There are no consolation prizes in casting. Handling rejection is part and parcel of being an actor and if an auditioner is not fully prepared to not get a part, or to not get the role they want, then parents and students should seriously consider not auditioning. I have read the above and discussed it with my child I have read and understand the above ________________________________________ _____________________________________ Parent Signature Student Signature 3 Fax Pages 1 through 3 to 954-523-0507 or email to lauren@flctstar.org Carrie PRODUCTION INFORMATION AUDITION REQUIREMENTS Please sing 1-2 minutes of a song from a POP/CONTEMPORARY MUSICAL (Heathers, Legally Blonde, Waitress, Spring Awakening etc.) or by a POP/ROCK Artist (Demi Lovato, Taylor Swift, Nick Jonas, Justin Bieber, One Direction etc.) No monologue is required. Shy outsider with telekinetic powers. Bullied by everyone since childhood as well as her mother’s strict biblically-ordained control at home. Transforms from ugly-duckling to graceful swan, then vengeful hawk. Vocally, capable of lyrical sweetness as well as fierce power. Think Lorde meets Christina Perri. Margaret White: Carrie's mother. A woman of visceral extremes. Numb. Strict Bible fundamentalist, though slightly "off,". Even with her huge deathly hatred for society, she shows a clear maternal love for Carrie that is shown in terrifying ways. Think Norma Bates of “Bates Motel” meets Joan Ferguson of “WENTWORTH” Sue Snell: Popular, straight A's, level headed. Her unthinking participation in a cruel act, leads her to attempt to right the wrong. Delivers with a sweet sincerity and strength. Operates as the shows narrator. Think Rachel Platten meets Rachel Berry of “GLEE”. Tommy Ross: Jock, but a nice, sensitive guy. Scruffiness and innocence. Sue's boyfriend. Apprehensive but falls in love with Carrie after taking her to prom as a favor for Sue. Carrie’s version of Prince Charming. Think Zac Efron meets Seymour from “Little Shop of Horrors”. Chris Hargensen: Spoiled, sexy rich girl, used to getting her own way. A huge level of arrogant self-assurance. Loaded with sexual dynamite, she has serious daddy and anger issues. Think Hayley Williams of Paramore meets the Regina George of “Mean Girls”. Miss Gardner: Gym teacher. Can be a strict disciplinarian if needed. Carrie forces her maternal instinct to arise. She sees a lot of herself in Carrie. Stern, but sheltering. Country Accent is a plus. Think Debbie Allen meets Ms. Honey from “Matilda”. Billy Nolan Bad boy, 6th year of High School. Boyfriend of Chris. Sexy and stupid-like-a-fox. Troublemaker. Think the new Nick Jonas meets Biff Tannen from “Back To The Future” Featured Roles: Norma: Gossipy, a shameless suck up to authority. Head Cheerleader. Second in command to Chris. Freida: Sue's brainy pal. Easy going, get along follower. Tireless extracurricular volunteer. Helen: Giggly, very immature and very needing to be accepted so she easily follows the herd. Possible physical insecurity. (i.e. plus sized, skinnier than most, taller than most etc.) Freddy: The wise-cracking class clown. Official yearbook photographer. Can't believe a girl would notice him. George: Tommy's wingman since childhood. Idolizes Tommy and Freddy. Secretly in love with Tommy. Stokes: Nerdy but not enough to be uncool. Happy to be included in Tommy's posse and will do anything to stay accepted. Mr. Stephens: English teacher & Guidance Counselor. Easy going. Stretched thin in his duties to the students. Ensemble: School students divided into social groups. (i.e. Cheerleaders, Goths, Nerds, Skaters, Hipsters, and a Gay couple.) Audition Song Recommendations Songs from Heathers, Legally Blonde, Waitress, Spring Awakening etc. or by a POP/ROCK Artist like Demi Lovato, Taylor Swift, Nick Jonas, Justin Bieber, OneDirection etc. No monologue is required. Please “Act” your song. An accompanist will not be provided but it is required that you bring tracks (without vocals) to sing to. A CD player with AUX cable for playback devices (phones/tablets/pc/etc) will be provided. Singing A Cappella (without music) is NOT acceptable for this audition.
