T I D E WAT E R Z C A R C L U B August 2012 The NewZ NISSAN DATSUN 240Z, 260Z, 280Z, 280ZX, 300ZX 31, 300ZX 32, 350Z, 370Z & G Series 2015 Nissan Z May Be Lighter, Leaner LONDON — The 2015 Nissan Z will be lighter, leaner and appeal to a more mainstream audience, Nissan's design boss Shiro Nakamura told Inside Line in a recent interview. Work on the new Z is "at an early stage," he said, with a concept version of the car in the works. Unveiling of the new Z concept could come as early as the 2014 Detroit Auto Show. Presumably, a lighter Nissan Z would return better gas mileage than the current version. The 2013 Nissan 370Z returns 19 mpg in city driving and 26 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA. The 370Z coupe has a curb weight of 3,314 pounds. The current 370Z has not enjoyed quite the same success as the 2002 350Z, which revived the Z car reputation and sold well in the U.S., Japan and Europe. "The next one has to have a stronger impact," says Nakamura. And that won't be achieved by making it bigger. "It cannot be any larger," he says. "It's at its maximum size now and should go leaner." By that he means lighter too, with the new model to feature a down-sized engine, probably a four-cylinder turbo rather than today's 3.7-liter V6. "It needs to be lighter, and more accessible to open the door to more people," he adds. Nissan must also juggle the product planning implications of this move to a lighter, leaner, downsized Z, because the current car not only shares its FM platform with the conceptually close Infiniti G Coupe, but also the G sedan and the Infiniti FX. The Alliance tie-up with Daimler may also mean that the next Z can draw on Mercedes hardware, although the German company's higher-cost components may limit the scope for platform-sharing. Speaking more widely about the Nissan range, Nakamura says that "Excitement, substance and agility" will feature in the design of future models. These new qualities will be combined with the above-average Inside this issue: The PresZ SayZ 2 Events/Activities 2 Meeting Minutes 3 Financial Report 3 Auto-X/Racing 4 Stuff 5-9 Preferred Venders 10 Next Meeting Club Officers 12 roominess of today's models, a task Nakamura admits will be "quite challenging," although the European-market Qashqai and Juke show the way ahead. "They are already sporty, and have a nice stance. Over the next few years Nissans will have a more consistent look," he adds, explaining that such "a diversified range, from Micra to Titan, is in some ways a strength, but also a challenge." Inside Line says: Nissan will have a challenge maintaining the continuity of the heavier, more brutal Zs of the past with the next lighter, leaner iteration. The 2015 Nissan Z will be lighter, leaner and appeal to a more mainstream audience, Nissan's design boss Shiro Nakamura told Inside Line in a recent interview. Work on the new Z is "at an early stage," he said, with a concept version of the car in the works. Unveiling of the new Z concept could come as early as the 2014 Detroit Auto Show. By Richard Bremner, Correspondent | Published Jul 11, 2012 I think we all are feeling a little lighter this month (losing a few pounds of sweat) after weeks on end of blazing hot temperatures and heat indexes well over 100 degrees. This excessive heat has kept many folks off the road and chilling inside for a good bit of the summer. But not all is lost. This month is the TZCC Annual Pig Pickin at my place. See info inside this newsletter and check your emails also. The pig will be cooked on a new grill (supplied by Steve and Wendy Smith) and will be some of the best pork around. So make plans to attend one of the clubs best member attended events, contact Mandi with your covered dish intentions and I’ll zee you on August 19th. Also remember to attend the club’s All Import Car & Truck Show on September 8th hosted by Hall Nissan of Chesapeake. We need you to get the word out, attend (with The your Z Car) and help at the show. Flyers are in your emails. The 25th PreZ SayZ International Z Convention is September 18 thru 23rd, so if you’re Todd Wagner planning on going, you had better make reservations fast as time is running out. Don’t forget about the club meeting at Mario’s on Monday the 13th. So many Z’s so little time. Z ya there! We have a new member, bringing the total to 62 members with 42 subscriptions to Nissan Sport magazine. The minutes were passed as written. For the treasurer’s report, please see elsewhere in this newsletter. Seven members turned out for the last club event. It was a nice drive to the Weeping Radish brewery in Grandy, N.C. They posted a welcome to the club on their sign out front. There was a quick tour and then tasting the product. The ZCCA convention is September 18 – 23 in Arizona. Four members are presently planning to attend. The website is http://www.zccazconvention.com/conventions/2012/index.htm for registration, hotel and events. For new business: We’ll be back at Mario’s in August. Kevin Surface has been to Virginia International Raceway twice for driving events. Fred and Todd are also going and all of them would like company. The next club event is the country drive and potluck picnic on Sunday, July 22. The starting point is the Eagle Harbor shopping center, the finish is historic Fort Boykins in Isle of Wight County. Angela Brown has kindly offered to host the potluck at her house if the weather is rainy. On Saturday, September 8, the club sponsors the All-Import Show at Hall Nissan on Western Branch Boulevard in Chesapeake. Treasurer Matt Zentz is trying to get the club’s PayPal account working again, for show registrations etc. Vice President Mark Garrenton will check on what it would take to make the club a formal non-profit organization. The annual pig picking is Sunday, August 19, at Todd and Mandi Wagner’s house. The club plans to buy or build a pig cooker, which will allow the pitmasters to fine-tune their techniques and timetables. Whatever is chosen, it will be gas-fired, which will eliminate the tedious job of tending the charcoal and provide more consistent temperatures. There’ll be a smoker box to throw wood chips into. The meeting was then adjourned. TZCC August 1, 2012 FINANCIAL REPORT Secretary Wendy Smith Treasurer Matt Zentz TZCC is pleased to welcome the following returning & new members. We greatly look forward to seeing you at the activities, meetings and events! The man saw a cop in an unmarked car running radar near his home. So he hopped into his car and parked down the street and flashed drivers to warn them about the radar. This didn't make the police happy so he was ticketed with the "improper flashing of lights" and fined $166. Then he decided to hire an attorney and fight for his First Amendment right to flash lights. The judge agreed that the officer misapplied a law meant to ban motorists from flashing after-market emergency lights and ruled that the law does not apply to people using headlights as a form of communication. The court decided this was, in fact, a violation of one of his Constitutionally-protected rights. Next he filed a lawsuit aimed at the entire Florida Highway Patrol, which has agreed to stop citing drivers for flashing their headlights until litigation is complete. Apparently flashing lights is a form of communication and protected by the Constitution. 2012 NICOfest Tail of the Dragon The 2012 NICOfest Tail of the Dragon event will take place Aug. 31-Sept. 2. All the books & magazines which were collected by TZCC over the past months were dropped off and donated to the US Veterans Hospital Hampton, VA on the behalf of TZCC in July. Here is one that might fit the bill. Print page out and do the work. The answers can be found if you read the newsletter front to back. Good Luck! The weather temps were perfect for a country drive in Isle of Wight, as they had been above 95 for days previously. This made for a great activity for a potluck cookout which would end at the site of Fort Boykin. The group met at a local shopping center just south of the James River Bridge where Mark Garrenton (VP) took the lead for the drive on the Sunday (July 22). There was a good group plus a few visitors joined us. The picnic area had a shelter, tables and cook area. A good self tour of the Fort Boykin area was marked with historical markers and a path that lead down to a beach area along the James River. One could see the across to the dead fleet ships. Once the walking of the area was over, it was time to get the food cooking. Tidewater Z members love to eat! Mark & Todd did the cooking (a guy thing) while other folks laid out the other fine food. A good selection of goodies. What potluck, yummy! Then came some tall tails, jokes, tire kicking and etc. Day ended after an area clean up and all left for home.
