was very interesting talking to the GP patrons
about the cars and the club. One Gentleman commented to me that Mark Stables' 1967 1/2 Datsun
Roadster was the best car on display! The weather was somewhat average early on and those of us
that had cars on display were a little concerned

The next event was the Japanese Classic Car Show
organised by the Association of Motoring Clubs
(AOMC). For a detailed account of this event by
Karyn (VP), please go to page 16. It was fantastic
to see so many members turn up to this event. To
cap it off, the club won the "Best Club Display"!
Following a few weeks later, quite a few members
attended the Phillip Island Classic on the Saturday
and Sunday. Once again, there were a record number of entries and there was some fantastic action
out on the track. Also the club had a great site
located at the northern end of the "Shannons
Walk" thanks to our social team and Paul for
"Staking our claim". This is the biggest historic
race meeting in the southern hemisphere and is
always an event not to miss. Thankfully the weather was good all weekend which made it even more
enjoyable. The highlight for me was seeing the ex
Jack Scoville Datsun 2000 Roadster (SRL-00004),
both in the pits and on the track! I had heard that
it had been purchased from the US and that it was
in QLD. This is a very famous vehicle and has a
documented and validated history going back to
when it was sent to the US from Japan in the late
60's. Unfortunately, it was relegated to running in
the regularity events due to rulings by the VHRR.
Hopefully this will be sorted in the future and enable all enthusiasts to see it competing against other
cars, not just the clock!
On the personal front, I have been able to get to a
few events this year; however I was unable to
make it to the JCCS due to the RAAF Museum's
biennial Air Pageant being held on the same day.
Not even the threat of being sick got me out of
working! Also, another vehicle will be taking up
space in the garage shortly. We have been looking for a 240 or 260Z for a while and after a few
years of looking, we have purchased a 1976 260Z
2+2. The car was owned by a former club member and has been a project car for some time. A
good percentage of the work has been done and
credit must go to the previous owner for a job well
done. Currently in store, the Z will be making its
way to its new home when the shed mod's get
completed.
Presidential Prattle
Greetings all, and welcome to the Mar / Apr 2012
edition of Full Circuit! Firstly, sorry for the long
delay in getting the magazine to you. Unfortunately
this has come about due to the Editor position on
the committee still being vacant. In the mean time,
I've stepped back into the job (hopefully temporarily)! If you feel you would like to have a go, please
contact any of the committee members for further
information.
Don't forget, please drive safely and responsibly,
and I hope to catch up with you at a club event! If
you have any suggestions for events or questions /

A week later the Aust GP came to town and once
again the NDSOC was offered and accepted a display position. Thanks to CAMS for once again
providing the opportunity for the NDSOC and to
Leah for organising the clubs involvement. The

The Vice Report
G'Day Everyone,
What a hot day and awesome club turnout the
Japanese Classic Car Show was. Truly, a very big
thanks to the 40+ members who were part of
the day and to the others who even just came
along for a look. The Princes all lined up looked
sensational (except for your truly leaving the
accessories on and plumes of smoke pouring out
front under the bonnet as I fried my coil..) and
we had quite a few past members attend too.
Whilst there were many things that could be
improved, nevertheless the day happened. And,
the organisers were more than happy with how
the day went, which likely means another one
next year.
It's been an incredibly busy past month or so
with the MSCA round at Sandown, Island Classic
and AGP all one after another! I went to all 3.
The Island classic had perfect weather for the
event - beautiful mid 20's with a breeze, and
tons of amazing cars to wander around.
Past members Don McKay in his 240z and John
Hardy in his Renault Alpine were competing,
along with QLD Z club member Jason Lea, and
current members Rob Crichton and Bob Cutting
were in their Zeds.
Carolyn Kruger made her National Competition
debut in her Group C Skyline, with Luke Ellery
also driving it in the Group A/C races.
Apologies to anyone else I have forgotten!
The beauty of this event is the access to all area.
You can wander into the pits, stick your head in
the engine and even ask the owner all about the
car. No restricted areas, no bunting, just thousands of admirers like yourself drooling over these beautiful cars. We had a great turnout each
day of club cars too.

Many of you know I am one of the WAMS
(Women of Australian Motor Sport) members.
We've been very busy of late, with our inaugural
Grand Prix luncheon held on the Thursday of
the GP. We had people from the sport, business
and media sectors along with some women who
excel in their discipline. Corinne East-Johnson is
the 2011 National Motorkhana Champion and
had a chat about her year. Caitlin Wood is a
young karter whom - selected by WAMS - lined
up against eight aspiring female kart racers
from across the globe in the shootout with the
winner receiving a funded drive in the 2011 CIKFIA Karting Academy Trophy courtesy CIK-FIA
and Women & Motor Sport Commission. She
didn't win, but spoke about the vast improvements she's made since then. We had some
bloke called Michael ........ Schumacher that is,
come along for a chat.
Nope, not joking, not a look alike but the 7 time
world champion who was a lot shorter than I
expected. He chatted about all things motor
sport, and assisted us launching our new scholarship (see elsewhere in mag). It was a huge
success, which made the frantic days prior more
than worthwhile. The following day I attended
the Women in Business breakfast at the track,
and met some very inspiring women. So, it was a
busy week. Leah and Jason did a stirling job with
all the events, and especially getting everyone in
for the Grand Prix. Amongst others, I took in
Mark's roadster, and thanks to Kriston and his
carload for guiding me into the area. Because I
was moving cars throughout the day, it meant I
had to come in a bit later than planned, and relished the chance to drive Mark's beautiful roadster. It does get cranky sitting idle in the warm
weather, but then again don't we all..?

I apologise for no update from me in the last and
first magazine for the year, it has been a little
busy for me personally for the beginning of 2012
and does not look like easing up...
However, I would like to welcome back all of the
people who have renewed for 2012, it has been
great to see so many renewals promptly coming
in before and after Christmas and no one forgot
to put in details when doing bank deposits...sterling job!
Now to welcome the new members for 2012, as
there were a few, I have not put in their rides,
but I thought that I would put their names in and
hopefully throughout the year we can encourage
them to fill out a members profile and submit it
with their details and this will give us all a far

During the long weekend in March, we headed to
Phillip Island for the annual Phillip Island Classic.
On Saturday, we had 12 cars on display in Shannons Walk and 10 cars on Sunday. The weather
was perfect, which made a change. Previous years
we have been blown away by near cyclonic winds
or melted in intense heat. Once again the racing
was adventure packed, with the highlight being
Carolyn Kruger’s inaugural race in her Skyline
DR30. Both Carolyn and car did us proud.
In the not so distant past, many of us had our
cars on display at the AGP. Naturally our dozen
cars show cased the Datsun-Nissan eras extreme-

Highgate in Derimutt as there is plenty of room and
there are the pits to roll the cars over. Stay tuned
for date and time of the next inspection day, the
format will be the same with a BBQ and a lot of idol
chit chat, a great opportunity to give your car an
airing and essential if your car has not been inspected in the past 12 months. (Renewals will not be
signed off without an inspection).
Please also be reminded that Permit Plate Holders
are expected to attend a minimum of six events
over the course of the year, so please make sure
you make the effort to get along to events.
NDSOC Club Event Entry Cancellation Policy
The purpose of this document is to clarify for all persons what the club’s policy is on Cancellations received
prior to or on the day of an event:
1.
Where the club has not paid for your spot to attend an event and you cancel more than 14 days prior
to that event – you are entitled to a refund of moneys paid less a 10% handling charge to cover the costs of
banking, postage etc.
2.
Where the club has paid for your attendance in advance (i.e. things such as many motorsport events,
Shannons Christmas with the Clubs, etc) you will not be entitled to a refund. However, if it is possible for another member to take your place at this event then we are happy to have them pay direct to you for your
place rather than waste the money. All that is required in such instances is for the member involved to let the
organizer of the event know that the other member is taking his or her place.
3.
Any special extenuating circumstances that may require further consideration will be dealt with at the
sole discretion of the executive committee or responsible officer at a committee meeting. Minor illnesses,
work commitments, car troubles and the like will not be considered as special circumstances so please do not
ask.

Competition Report
After two rounds of the MSCA competition it is good
to see a nice mix of some of the regular competitors
with a few new names and a few old names we
haven’t seen for a while starting to fill up the score
sheet. I missed the first round at Winton in January
but made it along to the Sandown round in March
where a full field (100+ cars) enjoyed a fine day
after a damp start. That damp start played havoc
with the Regularity competitors who were first out
and then had to nominate a time based on a wet
track, I spoke to Rod Thompson with the Roadster
who had never competed at Sandown before and
found himself some 6 seconds under his time in the
dry. The only sour part of the day was the fact that
it was supposed to be one of two rounds this year
with a passenger session, but for some reason that
did not happen. I have been told that the passenger
session will now take place at the next Sandown
round on the first of July and I will be doing everything I can to make sure that happens.

about then the next round is on May 6th at Rob Roy

The next round of the MSCA is Winton on the 29th
of April and if my poor car can survive a full Driver
Dynamics track day on the 14th with Jen and my
son Alex driving (I’m playing crew chief) then I will.

We have also had 3 rounds of the State Hillclimb
championship since the last mag and Richard Monty
in his 260Z has been dominating in the Marque
Sports class by winning all three of them putting him
in 1st place with three rounds to go. My bad finish in
the first round hurt me but with a 3rd at Broadford
and a pair of 2nds behind Richard (pushing the
Porches back to 3rd and 4th) at Mt. Leura I’m now

Nissan's Electric Future Began in 1947!

had selected the new lithium-ion batteries from Nissan,
which were extremely efficient on a weight basis."
The above quote could easily be from a government official at a pitch for a future fleet of zero emission vehicles. In reality, the source is a scene from Michael Crichton’s 1990 novel – and later blockbuster movie – Jurassic
Park.
Nearly two decades later, Nissan is still an industry leader
in lithium-ion battery development. However, the real
story of Nissan's history of Electric Vehicles starts much
earlier, though not quite in the Jurassic era, in 1947. It
was a unique period in the auto industry and the development of electric vehicles. Due to the post-World War II
energy shortage at that time, the Japanese government
encouraged entrepreneurs to produce EVs to cope with
the crisis.
One of the most unusual applications of the Prairie EV was
the years it spent under extreme polar conditions as a
support vehicle for the Japanese National North Pole Exploratory Team. In 2000, when the Prairie EV was undergoing cold weather testing at Nissan’s Hokkaido Proving
Ground, the owner of the inn where the evaluation group
was staying told them that the International Arctic Research team was looking for an EV to use at their research
station in Ny-Alesund, Svalbard, Norway – which at 79°N
is the world’s most Northerly settlement.

for an extended extreme cold test – which they themselves could monitor from warmer locations. It was arranged to loan the arctic researchers a Prairie EV fitted

Long after the first import of 24 Datsuns into Australia
in 1934, it was to be another 24 years before Datsun
returned. Datsun entered into the Sixth Mobilgas
Around Australia Trial from August 20th to September
7th 1958 with two Datsun 210 Bluebird 1000s. This
contest, which was the longest in the world at that
time, was a 16,000-kilometre, 19 day endurance trial
that went clockwise around the Australian continent.

held again. Entered in the 1958 event were 67 vehicles
from all over the world.

The two Datsuns were driven by Japanese drivers one by Namba and Okuyama with local navigator

achieving first in class (25th overall) and the other
fourth place in their class in the long and tough rally,
bringing about a new appreciation for Datsun cars.
The Datsuns shone - the Datsun 210, which had gone
on sale the previous year, was an ambitious model,
powered by Nissan’s first OHV engine (Type C).
Bruce Wilkinson had a suitable background, working
for his family’s mechanical business and having participated in the 1954 Redex Trial and the 1957 Mobilgas
Trial. Bruce answered an unbranded advert in the Sun
newspaper advertising for team drivers for the 1958
Mobilgas Trial; to his surprise he was successful. Mr
Katayama from Nissan Japan ran the team, both Bluebirds were ‘run in’ from Sydney to Melbourne, picked
up Wilkinson and travelled back to Sydney. The team
was established in an old boat shed out the back of a
house in Rushcutters Bay. The 210 was a heavy car
for the time, sitting on the Datsun one tonne chassis.
‘There was a lack of speed in the engine’, recalls Wilkinson, ‘so we had to make the car work.’

four starters finished after a gruelling race over deserts and hills in the area. Wilkinson said the Cedric
handled beautifully without mechanical problems.

In Victoria, the Bathurst win inspired the creation of the
Datsun Rally Team, headed by well known driver Bruce
Wilkinson; the 1958 Mobilgas winner previously for
Datsun.
From late 1967 to the following year, the racing team
competed in 56 events, achieving 33 firsts, 10 seconds,
and 7 thirds. The rally team entered 4 events, taking 2
firsts in class, one first outright and one equal first outright. Both these teams contributed greatly to the ever
increasing popularity and sales of the cars both here
and abroad.
It wasn’t until 1966, after Datsuns had been selling in
the Australian market for a few years, that they raced
again under the factory banner. The Datsun Racing
Team was formed with well known Australian racing
driver John Roxburgh. To support the team Nissan sent
out from Japan three works prepared Datsun 1300
Bluebird sedans to be entered in the Gallaher 500 mile
Production Saloon Car Race at the Mt Panorama circuit,
Bathurst.
Datsun Rally Team
Also in 1964 the factory sent two specially prepared
Datsun 1200 S.S. (P411) sedans to participate in the
inaugural Sandown Six Hour International Saloon Car
Race. These cars were raced for Nissan by the Scuderia
Veloce Racing Team, managed by David McKay. The
cars finished 4th and 5th in class and 9th and 11th outright. From this the S.S. model was introduced until
replaced by the highly regarded S.S.S. In March 1966,
Bruce Wilkinson won Class C of the Australian Mobil
Economy run in a Datsun 1300 S.S. sedan, which received much attention from the Australian public. This
2,400 km distance ran from Melbourne to Bundaberg
and aimed to use the least amount of fuel over the distance. Wilkinson entered these rallies and trials as a
hobby.
This was the Beginning of the Datsun Racing
Team
Two of the cars would be driven by Japanese works
drivers and a third car by Roxburgh and Doug Whiteford. Accompanying the cars was Team manager Takami ‘Tactics’ Sugawara and factory mechanics from Nissan Racing Division. This was the first Nissan factory
sponsored team in Australian racing and also the first
time Japanese works drivers had appeared on Australian racing circuits. The end result was justified Takahashi and Kitano took first in their class and Roxburgh and Whiteford second.

team of Jim Smith and Evan Gibson, and a Queensland
team of Barry Tapsall and Hank Woelders; additionally,
two 1000s were piloted by Takahashi and Hideo Oishi ,
whilst John Roxburgh and Doug Whiteford teamed up
again (1st and 2nd in Class A).

In 1997, two years after the introduction of the Prairie EV,
Nissan revealed the lithium-ion battery equipped Altra EV
(called the R'nessa EV in Japan). This award-winning electric minivan (honoured as one of the "greenest cars" by
Green Guide to Cars and Trucks in 1999) was sold both in
Japan and the United States, though only an estimated 200
units were produced.
The initial units were delivered to utility companies, including Southern California Edison Company, Pacific Gas and
Electric Company, and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. They were even used as "meter maid
cars" (parking enforcement vehicles) by the Santa Monica
Police Department. For a brief period, you could also rent
an Altra EV at the Los Angeles International Airport.
Part minivan, part SUV, part station wagon, the Altra EV
had a relatively long wheelbase of 2,799 mm (110.2 inches) and 4,869 mm (191.7 inches) length – nearly identical
to the 2010 Nissan Maxima’s 2,776 mm (109.3 inches)
wheelbase and 4,841 mm (190.6 inches) length.
The turn of the century was a turning point for battery systems as well. Nissan took a major step forward and started developing compact laminated Li-ion batteries together
with NEC, replacing the cylindrical cell used up until
then. The newly developed laminated batteries are able to
store double the energy in the same size. In other words,
same amount of energy packed in the curry sauce, instead
of a magnum bottle of champagne.
The evolution of battery development has accelerated in
the last decade thanks in large part to innovations in home
and personal electronics, especially cellular phones.
"We can even say that battery innovation owes a debt to

You don’t have to be an engineer to appreciate this story.
A toothpaste factory had a problem: they sometimes
shipped empty boxes, without the tube inside. This
was due to the way the production line was set up,
and people with experience in designing production
lines will tell you how difficult it is to have everything
happen with timings so precise that every single unit
coming out of it is perfect 100% of the time. Small
variations in the environment (which can’t be controlled in a cost-effective fashion) mean you must
have quality assurance checks smartly distributed
across the line so that customers all the way down to
the supermarket don’t get pissed off and buy another
product instead.
A while later, the CEO decides to have a look at the
Return on Investment of the project: amazing results! No empty boxes ever shipped out of the factory after the scales were put in place. Very few customer complaints and they were gaining market
share.
“That’s some money well spent!” – he said, before
looking closely at the other statistics in the report.
It turns out, the number of defects picked up by the
scales was 0 after three weeks of production use. It
should have picked up at least a dozen a day, so
maybe there was something wrong with the report.
He requested an inquiry, and after some investigation, the engineers come back saying the report was
actually correct. The scales really weren't picking up
any defects, because all boxes that got to that point
in the conveyor belt were good.
