Page 1 1 PRESIDENTIAL MESSAGE GARY C.K. HUANGPRESIDENT 2014-15 December 2014 If you take a look at the Rotary calendar, it's easy to see where our priorities as an organization lie. The Rotary year begins in July; in August we mark Membership Month, in September we celebrate New Generations, October is for vocational service, and so on, turning our attention to different topics that are important in Rotary. It's a great idea to do this, because it reminds us to talk about subjects that we might otherwise overlook during our busy Rotary year. But we all know that every topic on our calendar – from fellowship to our Foundation – is important. All of them are part of what makes Rotary what it is, and what makes all of us Rotarians. In Rotary, December is Family Month. Looking back on my years as a Rotarian, I have seen how important family is in Rotary – and how important Rotary can be to our families. My wife, Corinna, chose to join Rotary just a few months ago, after many years as a Rotary spouse. All three of our children are also Rotarians. All of them joined their own club, in their own time. All of them have found unique interests in Rotary. As we have watched them find their own paths, we have been struck by how wonderful it is to have so many members of our family involved in Rotary service. Rotary gives us something good that we can all do together. With Rotary, we always have interesting things to talk about at dinner. We are all involved in different service, in different clubs, so when we sit down together, we are talking about humanitarian needs of every kind, in every part of the world. There is always something new to learn. Our conversations are also a wonderful way to teach our children, through our own actions, what is really important in life. They learn about what life is like in different parts of the world, and how all of us have an obligation to help others when we can. I can think of no better lessons to teach our families than the lessons of Rotary service. I hope that in this Rotary year, many of you will encourage your family members to join Rotary, Rotaract, or Interact. Bringing your family into Rotary doesn't just Light Up Rotary – it lights up your own lives as well. Page 2 2 DISTRICT GOVERNOR MESSAGE December is Rotary Family Month. During my years in Rotary I have seen how important family and how important their support is for your contributions to Rotary. The family support is crucial for your devotion and contribution to Rotary. This is the reason that we need to bring the family into Rotary and for Rotary to become a family club. As family we can have fun in Rotary and we can contribute more to Rotary together. As President Gary says ”Bringing your family into Rotary doesn't just Light Up Rotary – it lights up your own lives as well”. My personal New Year Resolution is to bring my entire family into Rotary. December is the wonderful time to enjoy holidays together with our immediate family and Rotary family. We need to show each other how important we are to each others lives and to show our compassion and love. We need to show all our Rotary family members how important is to our lives to engage more in Rotary and to do more good in the world. It is a great time for fellowship and get-together events in our clubs. We need to show each member how important all members are in the club. We need to show our Rotary family how happy we are that they are part of our lives and that we are very pleased for their efforts to Light Up Rotary. During the month of December several of you have invited me to attend your celebrations. I am very honored and thankful by these invitations. It is time to see where you are in relation to your Foundation and Membership goals and to see if your plan is working and then decide if you need to make changes. Work with your club leadership and rely on your district chairpersons to give you ideas and suggestions on how to make it happen. I am available for anything you need from me. Please don’t forget your promises that you have given to me during my visit to your club concerning the Membership and Foundation goals. The promises need to be kept. Some clubs already have achieved their club goals. I encourage others to follow them. It is very crucial to our success that all of you achieve your club goals. Please work very hard to achieve them. The best support that you can give to me personally and to our District is by achieving club goals so, that at the same time, the District achieves its goals. We need to make a difference in this Light Up Rotary Year to Rotary and our Zone. We need to try this year to make our District among the best Districts in the Zone, the same way that we became the Best Class District in Rotary International. We are almost half way through our Rotary year and time is flying by. I just want to remind you that we can Light Up Rotary by increasing and retaining membership, helping in the fight against Polio by donating to Rotary Foundation, by bringing family members into Rotary, by organizing a Rotary Day, and by helping our communities. First Lady Afijete and I wish you and your family the most blessed holiday season and look forward to a very prosperous 2015. We wish you all a happy and healthy year. We wish you a great Light Up Rotary year, that all of you achieve your personal and club goals. DG Ruzhdi Page 3 3 Membership Club of the Month I am very happy to announce that in November, Hermitage and New Castle Rotary Clubs had a net gain of two members and are November Membership Clubs of the Month. Congratulations to Hermitage and New Castle Rotary Clubs. Keep up this great Rotary work. Please, other clubs follow Hermitage and New Castle and recruit new members! Donor Club of the Month Donor Club of the month for October is the Grove City Rotary Club with $3,680.00 donated to the Rotary Foundation Annual Fund. Thanks Grove City. Please keep up with this kind of contribution to Rotary Foundation. Donor of the Month Donor of the month for November is Presque Isle Club President Mr. Gary Ross who donated $1,200.00. Congratulations and Thank You to Gary Ross for his generous donation to the Rotary Foundation Annual Fund. President of the Month Club President of the month for November is Milford McBride III from the Grove City Rotary Club with highest Rotary Foundation Donation. Congratulations to Trip for his achievement. Page 4 4 Membership Trophy At 2015 District Conference, the club which has the largest membership net increase will receive the District Membership Trophy, which will be held for one year and next year passed to the club that has the largest membership net increase in that Rotary year 5th Major Donor One of our District Light Up Rotary Year goals is that this year our District will have 9 new Major Donors. On November 10th I had the honor and pleasure to attend the New Castle Rotary Club meeting, induct and recognize the Fifth District Major Donor –Mr. Sidney M. Shenkan. It is really a great pleasure and honor to recognize a Major Donor. In behalf of Rotary Foundation, District 7280 and myself I am thanking Mr. Shenkan for his generous donations of more then $10,000.00 to Rotary Foundation. He is a great example of generosity. I hope that others who are close to achieve Major Donor Level 1 will follow his example. Pinning the 5th Major Donor of the District – Rot. Sidney M. Shenkan on November 10th, 2014 at New Castle Rotary Club. There is no greater honor and pleasure then to pin a new Major Donor. Page 5 5 President Wilkinson’s Challenge At the District Fall Workshop, Past Rotary International President Wilkinson challenged each Workshop attendee to sponsor one member during Light Up Rotary Year. After the Workshop, President Wilkinson sent an e-‐mail to each attendee to remind them about their promise and commitment to him at the to sponsor one member. We will keep track of this challenge and inform you each month who fulfilled their promise and commitment. This month the following Rotarians fulfilled their promise: 1. Norma Thompson-‐ Linesville 2. PDG Lee Dyer-‐Evans City Thank you very much Norma and PDG Lee for keeping up your promise to President Wilkinson. Rotary Foundation Donations As I said during my visits to all clubs, one of our District Goals is that 70% of our clubs this Light Up Rotary Year are an Every Rotarian Every Year Club, which means that average donations to Annual Fund are minimum $100 and all members donate something to Annual Fund. Some clubs last month by mistake donated to other funds. I contacted The Rotary Foundation to correct their mistakes. Any donations other than to the Annual Fund don’t go toward EREY Recognition and Club goals. Please make sure to write Annual Fund in the memo line in every donation check if you wish for the donation to count toward your club and EREY goal. The benefits of donating to Annual Fund are: 1. The donation goes toward EREY. 2. The District gets back 50% of total Annual Fund Donations and we have more money for District Simplified Grants, scholarships, Global Grants etc. 3. We give 20% of all District money to the Polio Fund. 4. The donation to Annual Fund goes toward club and district goal, which is very important to achieve. I highly recommend to every club and Rotarian to donate only to Annual Fund, since we as a District donates to the Polio Fund. DG Project Update I am very happy to inform you that after many years for the first time all the Clubs participated in the District Governor’s Project Fund. We have 100% participation of District Clubs in the total amount of $20,650.00. Your support to my District Governor’s Project gives me more motivation and energy to work harder to serve all of you better. I am very proud and honored to serve as your District Governor. Your 100% support to the District Governor’s Project means a lot to me and you have made me a very happy District Governor. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR 100% GREAT SUPPORT. Page 6 6 Membership Update As we can see from the Membership Report at the end of the Newsletter, as of now we have reached only 2% of our Membership Goal. Some clubs did great, but some clubs lost many members. I call on those clubs to work very hard to compensate their loss and reach their membership goals. New members will not come themselves if we don’t put a big effort in membership recruitment and retainment. Please work on Membership. Membership and Foundation are top priority goals. Gratitude to Long-‐Standing Rotarians On November 18th Meadville Rotary Club had their traditional Thanksgiving Turkey Dinner where they recognized six members for their years of service exceeding 40 years. The following members were recognized: Don Snyder -‐ 42 years Jim Lasher -‐ 45 years Dick Burkhardt – 51 years Robert W. Waid – 51 years Dan Leech -‐ 61 years John Kerr – 62 years What a devotion and service to Rotary and Community from these incredible Rotarians. Thank you very much for your great devotion and service to Rotary. We are very proud to have you in our family. You are the living example of how we should serve and devote to Rotary. People in the photo in order:Tess Skillsky-‐Irwin, AG; Don Snyder; Robert W Waid; John Kerr; Jim Lasher; Dick Burkhardt; Dan Leech and Club President Mandy Maruska. Page 7 7 THE ROTARY FOUNDATION EARNS COVETED 4-‐STAR RATING The Rotary Foundation earned a 4-‐star rating from Charity Navigator, the largest and most prestigious independent evaluator of nonprofits in the United States. "Our foundation continues to operate at the highest ethical standard," said Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair John Kenny. "We are proud that Charity Navigator has recognized our commitment to accountability and transparency for the seventh straight year." The 4-‐star rating, the highest that Charity Navigator awards, recognizes sound fiscal management, accountability, and transparency. Charity Navigator evaluates thousands of nonprofits each year, and only one of four earns 4 stars. This year's top distinction marks the Foundation's seventh in a row, placing it in the top 3 percent of U.S.-‐ based charities. In a letter to the Foundation, Charity Navigator President Ken Berger wrote, "This 'exceptional' designation differentiates The Rotary Foundation from its peers and demonstrates to the public it is worthy of their trust." Paul Harris Fellow Opportunity A wonderful opportunity has been extended in this Rotary year by PDG Paul Rizza to encourage Paul Harris Fellows. If a Rotarian in District 7280 donates up to $500 to Annual Fund to become a Paul Harris Fellow, then PDG Paul Rizza will transfer points up to 500 to make a total $1000 for your Paul Harris. The offer works in this way: The contribution to become a Paul Harris Fellow is $1,000.00 to the Rotary Foundation Annual Fund. One may become a Paul Harris Fellow with a contribution of $1000 at one time or over a period of time, or if someone gives Paul Harris points or credits toward your giving. So here is a chance to fast-‐track your road to being a Paul Harris Fellow. Please contact DG Ruzhdi Bakalli at bvk@atlanticbb.net or814-‐726-‐9842 to discuss this opportunity. The offer also applies to spouses of Rotarians. President Elects At this point, we have only fifteen Clubs who have identified their Presidents for 2015-‐16. Letters will need to go out at the beginning of January detailing their plans and forthcoming events. Everyone knows that if a person is not designated, it is assumed the current President will be serving another term. We all know how everyone enjoys being a President, but everyone needs a break and/or intends to share the fun amongst other members. December is a short month with the parties and cancellation of meetings for the holidays. Please act on this matter as early as possible. Who wants to be bothered in the New Year? Page 8 8 Friendship Exchange with Kosova We are having a friendship exchange this year with Rotarians from Kosova.
