Faculty Services Summer Hours
• 5/6/11 NC Learn about lighthouses. The public is invited to an
open house slide presentation today on the history of lighthouses by
Anne Peskin, professor emeritus from City College. She will discuss
where and why they were built as well as how they helped sailors in
the past and currently. This one-hour presentation is sponsored by
Lifetime Learners Institute and will be held in the PepsiCo Theater,
East Campus, NCC.
• 5/6/11 Jewish Ledger—(Photos) Celebrating Freedom. Ben Engel,
a member of the Norwalk Community College Hillel, holds up a
haggadah created especially for the school’s first Multicultural
Freedom Seder. Thirty students, faculty and staff members attended
the April 11 event.
• 5/8/11 NA NCC to hold summer program. Registration is now open
for the NCC Child Development Laboratory School’s Summer program.
In partnership with Stepping Stones Museum for Young Children, the
CDLS will offer the program for pre-school children ages 3 to 5 from
June 20 through July 29. The program is open to the public and
consists of three sessions. For further information, contact Catherine
Neiswonger.
• 5/9/11 rep-am.com—State –funded film training offered only at
Quinnipiac this year. Since it began in 2008—with classes originally
offered also at Middlesex Community College in Middletown and
Norwalk Community College in Norwalk—the summer program has
produced 361 graduates.
• Spring/Summer 2011 Fairfield County Community Foundation
Smart Philanthropy—News from FCCF’s Fund for Women and Girls.
Luncheon guests’ generosity raises over $400,000. Karine Henriquez,
a single mother and member of the Fund’s Family Economic Security
Program who has graduated from Norwalk Community College, told
guests, “You changed my life.” She’s currently attending Fordham
University.
• 5/10/11 NH “Sherwood Island: The Park that Almost Wasn’t”, the
story of the history of Connecticut’s oldest state park, will be told at
1 p.m. Friday, May 13, in the East Campus PepsiCo Theater at NCC.
The presentation is sponsored by the non-profit adult education
Lifetime Learners Institute at NCC.
• 5/10/11 NH Community College merger is ‘punishing’. The
plan would eliminate the boards that now govern the four state
universities, the 12 community colleges, Charter Oak University and
the Board of Governors of Higher Education and be replaced by a
Board of Regents and an advisory committee. Having one board
governing these entirely different parts of higher education, which
compete with each other for their fair share of state funding, creates
an obvious conflict which presently does not exist… All of the 12
community colleges mean as much to their communities as NCC does
to ours. I fear…the merger will diminish what so many have built
over the last 50 years and put in jeopardy the Community Colleges
of our State.
• 5/10/11 NH Community forum to examine cyberbullying. Members
of the panel will include Catherine P. Miller of Norwalk Community
College. The forum will be held on May 12 at the East Norwalk
Library.
• 5/10/11 NH Arts center honors Westporter at the 32nd annual
Community-Sponsored Awards Exhibition at the Rowayton Arts
Center. Artist Ann Chernow selected the winners from 91 entries by
Rowayton Arts Center members. Chernow is NCC Professor Emerita.
• 5/10/11 NH NCC schedules Pinning Ceremony. The NCC Division
of Nursing and Allied Health will hold a Pinning Ceremony for nursing
students, who have completed their degree program requirements on
May 17 in the NCC PepsiCo Theater. The ceremony is an annual
tradition in which nursing pins are presented to nursing graduation
candidates prior to their graduation from NCC.
