In the early fall, wine festivals proliferate in the towns along the Rhine and Mosel rivers and each festival tries to outdo the next with a fireworks display. It had been decades since I was last in Germany but this cruise along the river Rhine brought back so many fond memories! The Rhine River is Europe’s most important waterway, running 766 miles from Switzerland all the way to the North Sea. Coursing through Switzerland, France, Germany, Austria and the Netherlands, the Rhine is a popular itinerary for river cruises. While the whole Rhine is romantic (what’s not romantic about a river cruise?), the part of the river in central Germany is most commonly referred to as the “Romantic Rhine”. Steep cliffs rise almost vertically from the water, castle ruins dot the hills and medieval towns like Speyer and Rüdesheim line the riverbanks. Poets and artists have gained inspiration from traveling along the Rhine. Because it’s all about the scenery, most of the public areas of the ship had walls of windows. Even my cabin had floorto-ceiling windows, so I never missed a castle or a church. And the rooftop deck allowed breathtaking, unrestricted views of the whole river. I listened intently for the song of the Lorelei as we neared St. Goarshausen. Legend tells of a beautiful maiden who sat on this huge rock that juts into the river. Her song and her beauty distracted many a shipman, causing them to crash their ships onto the rock. I heard nothing but maybe it’s just as well: I really didn’t want anything distracting our captain! The Rhine has many ties to music. We had already visited Worms, famous for Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation. Luther wrote some pretty famous hymns but he was no match for Richard Wagner who revolutionized opera with his “Ring of the Nibelungen”, which starts out in the Rhine River. Further up the Rhine, we would visit Bonn, the hometown of Ludwig von Beethoven, whom some of us consider the greatest composer of all time. In between, we saw the best of the wine country, with mile upon mile of vineyards planted with Riesling and Dornfelder grapes climbing up the hillsides. To my delight, we had the opportunity to stop during a wine festival and wander through town sampling new and old vintages with our tiny wine glasses hung on a cord around the neck. As it got dark, the sky lit up with fireworks. Fire came tumbling down the side of the requisite castle ruin on the hill, which, I was told, represented the losing side in an ancient battle. It was magnificent! Sound appealing? 2014 river cruises are still available! Welcome to the 2014 Spring Traveler For many of us, it felt like spring would never arrive! I just came back from a trip to France. At JFK airport I saw people using kiosks to get through Customs. How can I take advantage of that next time I travel internationally? A. What you saw are Global Entry kiosks installed at most of the larger international airports in the U.S. Members of the U.S. Customs Trusted Traveler program can scan their passports and make their customs declaration at the kiosk, bypassing the regular Customs lines. Joining the program requires a rigorous background check and a personal interview, and there’s an application fee, but many frequent international fliers find that the time they save using these kiosks to clear Customs in the U.S. more than makes up for the protracted application process. TIP Check your passport. If it’s due to expire within the next six months, get it renewed now. Many countries will not allow entry if your passport will expire soon. Don’t wait until you arrive to find out! Q. While staying at a nice hotel in Orlando, my son ordered a hamburger from room service. That was a $37 hamburger! Why is room service so expensive? A. As convenient as room service is, it’s definitely not economical. There are a lot of hidden costs built into that hamburger. The most obvious are tax and gratuity. That’s in the tiny print at the bottom of the room service menu and can frequently add 25% or more to the bill. Not quite so obvious is overhead — what it costs Call us at 800-533-0324 today to join one of these once-in-a-lifetime travel experiences, or to ask about the benefits of creating a custom group travel experience of your own. the hotel to make that hamburger. The hotel has to staff the kitchen 24/7 so that someone’s there to make your hamburger if you happen to ask for it outside normal restaurant hours. And then there’s simple supply and demand. As long as people keep paying $37 for the hamburger, the hotels will keep charging those rates. TIP Keep yourself hydrated when traveling. The changes in your daily routine caused by a vacation or business trip can lead to dehydration, which can lead to headaches and extreme fatigue. Try to keep a bottle of water with you at all times to stay hydrated and you will find yourself more refreshed and ready to go. Q. I hate to pack. I always use my largest suitcase when I go on vacation and even then it barely closes or it’s overweight. What can I do to make packing easier? A. Many people suffer from over-packing syndrome but with practice and determination, it’s possible to take all you need in a smaller suitcase. The key word here is what you “need”. • Start with a smaller bag and force yourself to stay within those confines. • When in doubt, leave it out. Don’t pack something just because you might need it. • Don’t pack an outfit for every weather scenario. Take clothes you can layer. • Color-coordinate your travel wardrobe. Stick with neutral colors or the same color family and you’ll find you’ll have more outfit options with fewer pieces. pg 2 | Call the experts at Carlson Wagonlit Travel or CWT Vacations today! On a European cruise, you’ll find both charming and exotic destinations in your choice of southern or northern settings. Nearly all the major cruise lines have ships positioned in Europe during the summer months, offering a virtually endless list of itineraries from which to choose. Whether you want to spend a week immersing the kids in ancient history, pamper yourself on a luxury ship for an extended vacation, or visit unique and secluded ports aboard a small ship or barge, there is a cruise that will fit your travel style and interests. The Mediterranean and Adriatic feature one alluring stop after another. • Athens is like stepping into a history book — the Parthenon, a temple on the Acropolis, is widely regarded as one of the world’s greatest cultural monuments. • Italy will give you the opportunity to roam the villages in the Tuscan countryside. Gourmands and wine aficionados will surely want to come back for a longer stay! • Ancient ruins, Renaissance treasures, d r a m a t i c vo l c a n i c c l i f f s a n d spectacular colors await you in the Greek Isles — it’s no wonder the Greek Isles have been named “Top Island Destination” by Condé Nast Traveler. • Lisbon, Portugal’s capital and cultural hub, is a cosmopolitan city offering a combination of history, cultural arts, modern life and great beauty. • East meets West in Istanbul — your senses will spring to life as you walk through the spice market and sample Turkish food. In contrast, voyages to Northern Europe and the British Isles offer a very Funjet LIKe AVIP different experience: from the fabled and majestic fjords of Norway to the tsarist treasures and opulent palaces of St. Petersburg. • In Copenhagen, visitors of any age will enjoy Tivoli Gardens (the amusement park that inspired Walt Disney to create Disneyland). • Tallinn, Estonia, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. You’ll take pleasure meandering through the winding streets, past ancient towers and the old city wall, and you’ll feel like you’re taking a step back into a medieval storybook. • A cruise to the British Isles can take you to destinations with illustrious pasts and contemporary significance. Here are some of our favorites! 3JAMAICA My title for this image is “Skinny”. In Jamaica, vendors are not allowed on the beach, so they paddle up and down the shoreline to sell their wares. We had settled ourselves on the beach when we noticed people in the water on kayaks or surfboards. We realized they were vendors and were not breaking the rules - ingenious businessmen! Skinny got our attention and said to remember him if we wanted to buy anything. He then paddled off to greet his next potential customer. From Elaine Dills – Winston-Salem, NC 3ALASKA Kayaking in Kings Bay near Prince William Sound, Alaska, while sailing with Un-cruise. It was during the summer solstice and at 2 AM it was still twilight. It never got completely dark—the night started getting brighter again at 4 AM! We enjoyed the marine life, especially the breaching humpback whales. The landscape was spectacular with sightings of bears, eagles and moose. Our cabin was at water level and we were able to watch the sea otters float by and touch the pieces of blue ice from the calving glaciers. Everyone should visit Alaska once in their lifetime. This will allow the universal travel charger to power and recharge any device that has a USB host port. • Portable Battery Pack – For those times you don’t have the ability to plug-in, a portable battery pack is the answer. Choose one that is compact and lightweight so that it is easy to pack. • Noise-Cancelling Earphones – Whether you’re on an airplane, train or bus, the most important aspect of travel listening is to isolate yourself from outside noise so you can relax and enjoy your journey and your music. In-ear earbuds are the most highly recommended for noise cancelling, but there are great options for closed-back headsets, too. • Mobile Boombox – How can you take your favorite music, books, or other audio entertainment with you on the go—whether in your hotel room, at the beach, in the park, or anywhere else your trip takes you? A wireless speaker is the way to go. • iPhone Binocular Adapter – This adapter case snaps right onto your iPhone and allows you to hook it up to the eyepiece of most standard binoculars so you can take enhanced pictures or videos. It may look slightly awkward but functionally, it works! • Travelpro Platinum® Magna™ Suitcase – The original inventor of the Rollaboard took home first place for the Travel Goods Show’s Innovation Awards with its Platinum® Magna™ design line. With such variety, it’s not surprising that Vietnam has become one of the top travel destinations in Asia. No visit to Vietnam would be complete without spending a few days in Ho Chi Minh City. Vietnam’s largest city sets the cultural and economic pace for the country. Formerly known as Saigon, it features charming French colonial architecture, the shoppingcentric Dong Khoi Street, Ho Chi Minh Square, the Municipal Theatre and the Ben Thanh Market, the largest and oldest market in the city. A visit here is a rare opportunity to gain perspective and understand the details of the Vietnam War from a different viewpoint: the War Remnants Museum shows the conflict through Vietnamese eyes. Ho Chi Minh City features a number of war memorials and the city maintains original Vietnam War-era aircraft and tanks, some still sitting on the sites where troops deserted them at the end of the war. On the banks of the Red River is Hanoi, Vietnam’s capital. Visitors to this city can benefit from first taking a Cyclo (three-wheeled cycle taxi) ride to become accustomed to the layout of the city. Hanoi has aged well and features the Old Quarter, where you’ll find a fascinating maze of narrow streets lined with markets and pavement restaurants and cafés. (Getting lost here may be one of the best experiences of Hanoi.) It is also a city of lakes. In the middle of the city lies the peaceful Hoan Kiem Lake (Lake of the Restored Sword) with the 18th-century Ngoc Son Temple (Jade Mountain Temple) sitting on an island in its center. Don’t miss Ho Chi Minh Museum, the mausoleum erected in the Vietnamese leader’s honor, and Nha San Bac Ho (Uncle Ho’s Stilt House), the humble cottage where Ho Chi Minh lived during most of his presidency. Halong Bay (Descending Dragons Bay) is a UN World Heritage site, and its beauty makes it one of the top sites to visit in Vietnam. A four-hour drive east of Hanoi in the Gulf of Tonkin, the bay is spectacular with almost 2,000 limestone islands that rise like monoliths from the water. Legend says these islands were originally emeralds dropped from the mouths of dragons. With its unique bio-diversity, Halong Bay offers the opportunity for some active recreation such as scuba diving, caving, kayaking and even mountain climbing. A trip to Vietnam requires the assistance of a seasoned travel professional. You can rely on our team of experts to help you arrange a smooth traveling experience to Vietnam or the destination of your choice. It boasts spectacular mountains, outstanding parks, the ocean, and an abundance of wildlife, yet Vancouver is also a sophisticated city that really does have it all. No wonder it is consistently ranked #1 as the best place to live for quality of life. Vancouver is full of wonderful experiences for visitors. When in Vancouver, a visit to Stanley Park is a must! It features a breathtaking setting, as it’s almost entirely surrounded by water with spectacular mountain views. With many lovely beaches, miles of well-maintained trails, Canada’s largest aquarium and an array of can’t-miss, kid-friendly spots (including a pool, water park, miniature railway and more), this 1,000-acre haven is recognized as one of the greatest urban parks in the world. You can explore Stanley Park on your own or take the park tour by horse-drawn carriage, but pace yourself: there’s so much to do, you could spend your entire vacation in the park! Grouse Mountain attracts everyone from skiers and snowboarders to those who simply want to experience the scenic views from the top. The famous vancouver Grouse Mountain Skyride (North America’s largest aerial tram system) will take you on a one-mile aerial journey to the Alpine Station, 3,700 feet above sea level. Breathtaking panoramic views of the city, ocean and surrounding mountains unfold, culminating with a summit altitude of 4,100 feet. This is a not-to-be-missed stop. One of Vancouver’s oldest and most famous attractions is the Capilano Suspension Bridge. Originally constructed in 1889, it spans 450 feet across and hangs 230 feet above the ground. You’re sure to experience a thrill crossing the wire cable bridge, but you’ll also enjoy the rain forest, award-winning gardens, nature trails and North America’s largest private collection of First Nations totem poles within the surrounding Capilano Suspension Bridge Park. Of course, this is just a smattering of what you can experience and there’s so much more: the harbor, Granville Island, art galleries, the science museum. Allow your mind to wander as these romantic vacation ideas lure you away to an intimate hideaway. Napa Valley and the wine country offer couples a quiet and relaxing getaway. Wine tours are at the top of the activity list here, and most tours cover three or four wineries in a day. For a different take on the traditional wine tour, schedule a trip on the Napa Valley Wine Train. While on the train, you can enjoy a gourmet meal and wine tasting bar while navigating a 25-mile track through Napa Valley. For those with an adventurous side, consider taking a hot air balloon tour. You’ll be awed by the spectacular views. Couples who enjoy sports can play golf, tennis or go biking in the wine country, too. And might we suggest scheduling a couple’s treatment at one of the many spas in the area for a soothing way to wash your cares away? Italy has always ranked as one of the most romantic places in the world. Here, couples may find themselves meandering the streets of Rome, being serenaded on a gondola ride along Venice’s canals or lingering over a glass of wine in a romantic sidewalk café in Milan.
