AMERICAN RED CROSS 2010 ANNUAL REPORT
American Red Cross 2010 Annual Report For anyone who has read our previous annual reports, you will quickly notice we’ve done something different this year. We’ve decided to focus the 2010 Annual Report on the heart of SEPA Chapter; its one-of-a-kind Red Cross House – The Center for Disaster Recovery. “I AM LARGE, I Contain Multitudes.” In the pages that follow, you will learn all about Red Cross House and what it means to the people -Walt Whitman who live in Philadelphia, Delaware, Montgomery, Chester, and Bucks counties. You will read the stories of families, who would not have had anywhere to go in their moment of crisis without Red Cross House. You’ll hear from the people who’ve entrusted the Red Cross SEPA Chapter to care for its most vulnerable citizens. You’ll hear from some of the people who believe in Red Cross House and its mission so much they generously gave of their time, their treasure, and their talent, to see to it Red Cross House was built and will remain open for many years to come. Even though nearly 2,400 families have come through Red Cross House since it opened in April 2003, this still truly is just the beginning. as it was seven years ago, probably even more so. These words by poet Walt Whitman signify how Whitman saw himself, as a composite of all the people in his life – his neighbors, his family, his friends, and his countrymen. At the Red Cross, we too are large. Our multitudes are the one million people who received preparedness education last year, the 100,000 people who learned to save a life last year, and the 10,000 people who needed your help after a disaster last year. They are all symbolized by Red Cross House and the more than 1,000 people who stay there each year and the more than 12,000 volunteers who help us live our mission of helping people prevent, prepare for, and respond to life’s emergencies. You too are large and contain multitudes, so on behalf of all those who benefit from your great generosity and support, we thank you. - I Michael Coslov Chairman American Red Cross Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter 1 The American Red Cross, Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter a humanitarian organization led by volunteers 23rd and Chestnut Streets and guided by its Congressional Charter and the Philadelphia, PA 19103 Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross 215.299.4000 Movement, will provide relief to victims of disasters and help people prevent, prepare for, and respond www.redcrossphilly.org The quote in the mural on Red Cross House, “I am large, I contain multitudes,” is as apropos now Photo: Alex Lowy American Red Cross facebook.com/redcrossphilly twitter.com/redcrossphilly to emergencies. “We carry men, women, and children out of burning buildings and place them in the arms of the Red Cross. When the hoses are rolled up and the last fire truck pulls away, the Red Cross is there with the fire victims, and we can rest, knowing they are in good hands.” - Lloyd Ayers Philadelphia FiRe Commissioner Photo: Andrea J. Stanley, The Times Herald, Norristown, PA 3 Fires account for more than 90% of disasters in the five-county region—on average, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter responds to two fires every night. “When my family and I arrived at Red Cross House, we spoke with a counselor. Then, they settled us into our room. They gave us clothes and food. They gave me peace of mind.” 5 As soon as disaster victims arrive at Red Cross House, they receive a hot meal and get settled into a private family suite. The following day, a Red Cross social worker meets extensively with the family to formulate a recovery plan that will help them get back on track in about 21 days. “The Red Cross does a wonderful job of making sure that families return to normalcy as quickly as possible. In most cases, children staying at Red Cross House are back to school the very next morning following a fire. We love working with the staff at Red Cross House, because they value education as much as we do.” - Dr. Arlene Ackerman 7 Superintendent Philadelphia School District Throughout the recovery process, families stay together and receive the guidance they need. Caseworkers encourage families to establish a regular schedule quickly to ensure a smooth recovery. “I didn’t have to worry about where I was going to lay my head. I didn’t have to worry about how I was going to feed my children. I knew that the Red Cross was going to support me through the recovery process. My mother left her home to me so that I could raise my family, and because of Red Cross House, I can give the same gift to my children.” - Annetta Johnson Red Cross House client 9 Families with strong support systems and sufficient resources can rebuild their lives relatively quickly. However, for the most vulnerable populations in our community—the working poor, the disabled, and the sick—a residential fire may mean chronic homelessness or life in the city shelter system. “I didn’t know they had this until my house got burnt. It’s nice that people have a place like this.” - Eva Malone Red Cross House client Philly.com, January 6, 2010 Red Cross caseworkers and residential staff, under the direction of Yohan Weerasingha, serve as family advocates, assessing and addressing housing, financial, emotional, spiritual, and other needs throughout the recovery process. “I won’t hesitate to praise the support we’ve received. I have never experienced anything like this. The Red Cross has gone above and beyond what they needed to do.” The majority (92%) of disaster victims admitted to Red Cross House have an annual family income of less than $35,000. Without Red Cross House, they would enter the City’s homeless shelter system and be potentially separated from their family members. - Sean Wright Red Cross client Daily Local News, January 31, 2010 About Red Cross House: Within the past five years alone, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Red Cross has provided disaster relief to more than fifty thousand individuals. Families with strong support systems and sufficient resources can rebuild their lives relatively quickly. However, for the most vulnerable populations in our community—the poor, the disabled, and the sick—a residential fire may mean chronic homelessness or life in the city shelter system. Shelters are designed to accommodate the homeless—not self-sustaining families who lose their homes to unforeseen fires or floods. Shelters typically separate family members for health, safety, and availability reasons, but we believe they need to be together. The support and comfort family members provide for one another at such a time is critical, especially for children. The Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter recognized the need for a program specifically designed for disaster victims. Therefore, in November 2001, we broke ground for Red Cross House—The Center for Disaster Recovery. In the spring of 2002, we began construction, and in April 2003, we welcomed the first family. 13 Red Cross House is a two-story, 33,000 square-foot brick building located in West Philadelphia with the capacity to accommodate up to 120 individuals at a time in 26 private family suites. The facility includes social work offices, counseling and training rooms, indoor and outdoor children’s play areas, a laundry room, storage space for clients to use, and a large kitchen and dining area where clients are served three meals a day. Red Cross House is designed to help disaster victims maintain their dignity and rebuild their lives within an average of 21 days. With the help of Red Cross caseworkers, disaster victims formulate and follow a recovery plan designed to connect them with the resources they need to avoid dependence on county and city services. Since the doors of Red Cross House opened in April 2003, disaster victims have recovered and rebuilt their lives faster and at about a third of the cost of a city shelter. Most important, Red Cross House— The Center for Disaster Recovery has kept more than 2,400 families together throughout the recovery process. Philadelphia “The Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Red Cross does a phenomenal job of meeting the needs of disaster victims in the five-county area. Through Red Cross House, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter has gone above and beyond to help facilitate the recovery process for families who have lost everything.” - Jill Michal President & CEO United way of Southeastern pennsylvania “Families who stay at Red Cross House are sometimes able to return to a better standard of living, because they are made aware of available public assistance. In addition to bettering the lives of those who stay there, Red Cross House reaches even farther into the community by serving as a school for the Red Cross’ Nurse Assistant Training program, a community center for CPR and other safety training courses, and a home base for disaster victims throughout the five counties who choose not to stay at Red Cross House but who require Red Cross care.” - Dr. Susan Kinnevy Family Welfare advocate and researcher, University of Pennsylvania 15 When families leave Red Cross House, they have rebuilt their lives, secured a financially stable living situation, and begun the emotional healing process. Since April 2003, nearly 2,400 families have rebuilt their lives with the help of Red Cross House. 7 Years of service 137,450 Nights of shelter provided to families with nowhere to turn but the Red Cross 33,000 Square-foot facility, with a large kitchen, dining room, meeting room, and two play areas 26 Hotel-style family “suites” (bath, desk, sink, cabinets, dressers, and beds) 120 Daily person capacity 71% Average occupancy rate 7,812 Children and adults helped 2,412 Families helped 412,350 Meals served 373 Workshops for adults and families (about one a week) 2,304 Adult participants in workshops–stress management, financial planning, fire safety, etc. 536 Group activities for children 3,077 Child participants in art & music therapy, after-school programs, etc. 764 Child participants in four Red Cross House camps 92% Disaster clients with family income less than $35,000 2,623 Days in operation since April 2003 Vision Statement We will serve every individual and family across the region by mobilizing the power of our community to prevent, prepare for, and respond to disaster.
