CENTRAL BOARD Mehrdad (Mike) Ebrani I am a proud husband to Sarit and father of four. I was raised in the world’s greatest community and would love the opportunity to help lead it to even greater achievements. Born and raised in a very happy, yet financially struggling family, a main concern of my parents was that I receive the best Jewish education. That coupled with being part of the Mashadi community has helped me a lot in life. I have always looked up to intelligent and successful members in our community and they have motivated me to strive hard to do well myself (not just financially). I decided to run the New York City marathon at age 22 because another community member had done it. My yeshiva education has taught me that even greater than being a successful businessman is to be charitable and giving – especially to our own community. If elected board member, I have two primary goals which I think are of utmost importance to keep our community strong and united going forward. The first is to promote marriages in our youth. In order for our community to grow I believe that we must encourage our youth to get married and start families at a young age. I would like our community to have affordable, sponsored Israel trips for our youth so that they can get to know each other better in a Jewish setting. I also strongly believe that our community should implement a large ‘Hachnasat Kallah’ fund where there will be a large pool of money available for youth who want to get married and don’t have the means. They can borrow from the fund (without interest) and give back when they can afford to. In order to keep our community identity strong I also firmly believe that we must initiate our own elementary school where our Jewish culture will be taught. In today’s society it will be very difficult to convince our youth not to intermarry with a non Jew if they were raised with them and felt very comfortable with them from a young age. I feel that I am part of the greatest community in the world because it is the most charitable when it comes to helping a fellow member. As a board member I would love to see my above goals come to fruition. Simon Ghassabian Born in Tehran Iran. Allen Hakim "My name is Allen Hakim and I am the son of Khosrow and Manijeh Hakim and have been married for 22 years to Lobat, daughter of Firooz and Gilda Kashanian. I was born in Tehran in 1967 and immigrated to the United States in 1978 during the same time that the most of our community made the difficult transition. I attended Hillcrest H.S. and then went on to earn a degree with high honors in Finance with a minor in Computer Science. Currently, I run an IT/Technology/ E‐commerce company, which deals with medium sized companies. I have reached an age that I can dedicate some of my time to our wonderful community and give back a small percentage that it has given to me and my family." My name is Mehran Hakimian, born in1968, to my mother Parvin and the late Iraj Hakimian, z”l. I am happily married to Arezou, daughter of Victoria khanoom and the late Mehdi Hariri‐Tolou, z”l. Together we are raising four wonderful sons, Spencer, Scott, Pierce and Anderson, to have a love and understanding of Torah, Judaism and Zionism. I was privileged to serve one year on the North Shore Hebrew Academy’s General Board followed by another three years on the school’s Executive Board. During my term, I co‐chaired the planning of the N’SHAMA Camp and also co‐chaired the school board’s Nominating Committee. Because of my unconditional love of The State of Israel, I am proudly serving as a Senate Club Member of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), where I am a member of its Congressional Club and currently serve on the organization’s Long Island Council. For the love of Judaism, I am currently serving as an Ambassador on Long Island’s Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC). I am also serving as a New York Cabinet Member of the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs (JINSA). Recently I was nominated to serve on the Village of Kings Point Planning Board where I am honored to help maintain and preserve the village where many members of our community reside. It is with great pride and passion that I am currently finishing my first term as a Central Board member of the United Mashadi Jewish Community of America (UMJCA). With Hashem’s help, I have humbly decided to commit myself to serve another three years to help safeguard our rich traditions and minhagim and to preserve the unity of our beautiful and blessed community. Nancy Hakimian My name is Nancy Hakimian and I am a 47 year old mother of three children and own a small business with my husband, Ron Hakimian (Javadoff). My parents are Rebecca and Hekmat Hakimian (Mortezazadeh). I have a Bachelor’s Degree in business from Pace University. Over the years, I have been involved in many community and school organizations: • Board of Mashadi Youth Committee • One of the Editors of the Megillah Magazine • One of the co‐founders of Mashadi Cancer Alliance • Board of Mashadi Sisterhood • Treasurer of Great Neck Public School PTA Running for the Central Board was not an easy decision to make, but I chose to do so because I believe that it takes a strong community to raise our children today. I believe our synagogues, besides being a place to pray, are the core to our everyday lives. As a mother trying to raise children with traditional Jewish values and a business‐woman with an understanding of fiscal responsibility, I would like to help create a blueprint of the direction that we would like our community and our synogogues to head towards. The previous Central Board did a tremendous job by lowering our community’s debt. The role of the next Central board should be to create a plan of where we would like our community to be in the next 10 years. Here are some of what I feel should be the priorities of the new Central Board: • Increasing Jewish education for our children after Talmud Torah • Looking into affordable housing options for the elderly • Searching for a full‐time Rabbi for Ohr Esther • Searching ways of increasing seating at our synogogues to accommodate the growing demographics • Looking into creating affordable options for our youth to be able get married If given the chance, I would love the opportunity to serve our beautiful and united community. Shahin Hakimian My name is Shahin Hakimian, son of Soleyman and Yafa Hakimian. I was born on July 18, 1966 in Tehran, Iran. I am the youngest of six siblings, and was raised in Tehran until the revolution. At the age of twelve, I came to America alone and lived with my brother until my parents arrived. After graduating from Forest Hills High School, I joined my brothers in their business and I have been a partner ever since. In 1995 I married my wife, Stacey, and we have been blessed with three children. I would love to follow in my mother and brother's footsteps to be able to give back to the community that we take so much pride in. David Hezghia Hello my name is David Hezghia. I was born in Mashad in 1949 (1328) and lived in Eidgah, Sareh Heyte until I was 6 years old. At 7 we moved to Janaat in Mashad. I studied in the Islamic School called Taher until 4th grade. We then moved to Tehran where I attended the Jewish School called Kourosh. After I finished Kourosh I attended ORT Technical School and studied Live Electric and Auto Mechanic until I graduated. I have been working since then for the past 46 years. I married my wife Jila when I was 24. We have 1 son and 3 daughters. Our son Jonathan is married to Stefanie, and our daughters, Shirin is married to Rodney Rahmani, Debbie is married to Isaak Nassimi, and Shana is a Doctors Assistant. Thank God I see it in myself and have the opportunity to return and help and serve my community again. In the past I have served on the Central Board, Mashadi Jewish of Great Neck, Talmud Torah Board, and other boards for over 11 years. I was Treasurer of Mashadi Jewish for 3 years and during that term we built and opened the Mashadi Jewish Center. I was very active on all of these boards and served on almost every committee. I was in meeting almost every night then and on Sundays and now see it in me again to do so. I have also been running Yom Kippur Minyans, mainly at Colbeh, for the past 25 years. In this past term, I have had the honor of serving as Treasurer of the Shaare Shalom Board and as a member of the Central Board as well. I think that I can take on any challenge as a Board member and do a great job. As a Board Member I will not stop until I finish the job at hand. I believe I can take on any responsibility as a Board Member, whether it is as Treasurer, Technical and Building matters, Financial and Expense matters, Security, and Safety matters as well. I can also take on matters with regard to the youth especially parenting and role model matters. I can keep on going but I do not want to take up too much space. Thank God my family has been serving our great community for many years as well. My wife Jila served on the Sisterhood for 10 years. My son Jonathan has been serving since he was 12 years old. At 12 he started the Youth Minyan in the back of our weekly Colbeh Minyan. After graduating College he started the Singles and Young Couples Minyan in the gym of Shaare Shalom which was very successful. Since Ohr Esther ‐ YMJC opened he has been one of the head Gabbayim and has been on the YMJC Board. He has served as Chairman (President) of the Board for the past term. My daughter Shirin is serving as Vice President of the Sisterhood. Debbie and Shana have both served the community on various committees as well. Ladies and Gentlemen, we have terrific candidates this year and I am sure everyone will do a great job. I know that you have a difficult job at hand on who to vote for but am sure you will do a great job and vote for people who will spend their time for the community. I would be honored if you vote for me as I believe I can do a great job serving on the Board and working for our great community. Ramin Kalaty My name is Ramin Kalaty, son of Mirza and Shahin Kalaty, married to Ronita daughter of Moses and Hellen Bassalian. I was born In Tehran, Iran in 1961 and moved to New York in 1977 and attended Windsor High School for my senior High School year, the following year got accepted to Polytechnic institute of Technology in Brooklyn and studied Mechanical engineering for two and a half years, and while attending college I got involved with my Fathers oriental rug business in 1979, and then attended Queens college for one more year. After College I was fully involved with our rug business and still am. I have been a board member of Oriental Rug importers association (ORIA) in 2000 & 2001, and been on the executive board of ORIA since 2008 till present. If elected to Central Board of our community, I like to ensure the unity in community without sacrificing any orthodox integrity and Halacha s of our community. In addition I think our Board should emphasize in providing an excellent atmosphere for religious and social services for the community with means that are provided. We should look into reducing our debt and even start saving for our future. We should emphasize in having our youngsters to mix more with the 54 Synagogue, and elders mix more with 130 steamboat road. I am sure there will be many more issues that need to be addressed and hope that I could help as much as I can. Linda Kamali Education: College graduate ‐‐Business Management, Participation in Community Committees: Served on the Supervisory Council 1998‐2001 Served on the Central Board 2001‐2004‐ Officer Position‐ Secretary Served on the Central Board 2004‐2007‐ Officer Position‐ Assistant Treasurer Served on the Central Board 2010‐2013‐ Officer Position‐ None Accomplishments in Community Programs: Initiated and established Senior Club and Senior Lounge with cooperation of other committee members, Completed installing plaques in building of Young Mashadi Jewish Center, with cooperation of other committee members, Initiated and rejuvenated the role of the new sisterhood by offering to the supervisory Council to pursue a referendum as well as to improve the image of the committee. With cooperation of Shaare Shalom Synagogue Board, designed and developed a new women section in south section of Shaare Shalom main sanctuary. Mark Karimzadeh
I was born in Tehran, Iran, and moved to London, England at the age of 4. Growing up in London, I began working in the community and Synagogue at age 11, by getting involved with the “Youth Service” of our Synagogue for 7 years, as an organizer and gabay of all the services. My love of sports and music got me involved with the Maccabi Association, and led to my volunteer work as a regular radio presenter of a music and talk show at the top London Children s Hospital, Great Ormond Street, for 7 years. Throughout my time at Manchester University, I was involved with the “Jewish Society”, primarily as officer for publicity and marketing, as well as Israel and Zionism. I graduated from Manchester University with an Honors B.A. degree in Economics. After moving to New York, I became involved with the Youth Committee, at first helping with various programs and publications. I was elected to two terms of the MYC, serving as vice president. My involvement with the American Friends of Bet El led to my being honored with their “Young Leadership Award” in 2001. I also served three terms on the Board of Shaare Tova, serving in various roles. Most recently, I have served for two terms on the board of Shaare Shalom Synagogue, acting as executive secretary, and subsequently as vice‐president, and working closely with the President on all aspects of the Synagogue. I have been nominated to run for the central board, and if elected, I hope to be able to continue improving the smooth running of the various community synagogues, and try to find ways to increase attendance to our Synagogue services, and to enhance, improve and develop all of the various services that are offered to the community, while helping to properly budget for these services that we provide to our community. Mojdeh Karimzadeh I was born and grew up in Tehran. Learning about my community and Jewish values started in our family’s synagogue in Tehran (the Rafinia Synagogue). We moved to New York in 1978. Four years later I married my husband Mansour and moved to London and lived there for 17 years. During my early years in London I attended the Hampstead Garden Suburb Institute where I studied English and Social Art. My adult life experiences and bringing up children were shaped in London. These included living among a mixture of Mashadi, Sephardic and Ashkenazi communities and friends. During which I learned about other cultures and minhagim and more importantly appreciate our Mashadi way of life. I have been active in a number of charity organizations both in London and in New York. I was a member of the Sephardic division of JIA (equivalent to UJA) and EMUNAH, Israel’s largest religious Zionist women organization. I was elected to the Central Board and had the privilege of serving as the secretary of the Board during this past term. This position meant that not only I had to be aware of the issues and the views of the Central Board but had to keep in mind the needs of the community when making decisions. As a result my involvement in charity and communal activities has increased. I have been involved in a number of projects, including collection of funds for the first Mashadi Sefer Torah for the Kotel synagogue and leading the MYC trip to Israel as a chaperon. I have also been active as a member of the Mashadi Cancer Alliance, helping those who needed guidance and assistance and started the annual Donate Your Hair program. If re–elected to a second term of Central Board , I will strive to unite the community under our traditional values. For our community to stay together in the future, I believe that we have to strengthen our Mashadi values and teach them to our children by action and not just by words. Having been away for many years I have realized the importance of our traditions and my goal is to keep the same values for generations to come no matter where we or our children live. Sheila Kavakeb "Respect for others & their opinions is a cornerstone of humanity". This is among my favorite Persian Quotes & something I live by. This is something I've learned through my upbringing as a member of our community. I highly value my ties to the Mashadi Community along with it's traditions & moral values. Religiously, I'm a Traditional Jew like the majority people in my age group. My social life consists of many friends whom I hold dear. I have strong bonds both inside the community & out. I hope to be able to contribute towards Israel & Zionism & Family Affairs. Zionism is something my parents instilled in me as a child. I started trying to help when I was 16 years old in the Jewish Cub Scouts. My first position was as a coach for the Girls Scouts. At 18, under the supervision of the woman's Jewish Federation in Iran, myself and nine other girls started the Girls Jewish Federation in Iran. I was honored to be working alongside the late Mrs Shamsi Hekmati & Mrs Maliheh Kashvi who was the wife of a prominent Jewish Congressman in Tehran. After our move to America, I spent 5 years volunteering for the Jewish Federation of America in St Louis, MO (a division UJA). That led me to Hadassah, where I was served as a Board Member for 3 years & was actively volunteering for almost 10 years. For those who don't know Hadassah is an international Jewish organization. Since moving to NY, I've also been on the Board of WORLD ORT (an Israeli organization) & more recently volunteered my time to other causes like HIBM. Yehonathan Mordechai I was born on July 1956 in Jerusalem Israel to A”H, Elisha and Hanna Mordechai (maiden name Deil). My grandfather Haji Mehti Mordechai immigrated to Israel over 80 years ago. He went from wealth to poverty due to the economic condition in Israel at the time. I am one of 8 children and my father would take upon himself any job in order to bring food to the dinner table. We had no refrigerator, televisions, heating system, gas, or hot water and unfortunately at age 7 I had to go work after school. I was only given 8 year of education and was needed to go work full time to help the family. At the same time our home was full of guests and always a happy place. One afternoon an Israel government social worker approached my mother to fill up a form that would give them government aid. When my father heard this he discarded the form and said “me and my children will work hard, if we get used to be given money we will end up lazy beggars”. At age 18 I joined the Israel Defense Forces and at 21, I met my dear wife Esther. We moved to New York 24 years ago where we were privileged to meet the Mashadi community that we fell in love with the community. Today we have 4 kids Amnon, Ayala, Daniel & Elior. My son in law is Roni son of Dina/Yossef Sioni. My daughter in law is Melanie daughter or Ester and Morris Livian. Today thank Gd we have 7 beautiful grandchildren. I work in the diamond business with my sons. I believe our Jewish religion and in hard working. Additionally I’m not afraid of challenges as life is full of them. I am firm believer in honesty and anti‐gambling. I am an advocate of sports, eating correctly and sleeping properly so one can function for life. Sammy Namdar I was born in England in 1961 and later moved to Italy. After joining the family s business, I moved to New York in 1984 to open a branch of my family s diamond business. Two years later I met and married my lovely wife Mina; Baruch Hashem we have five children. Having enjoyed the many benefits of our great community for all these years, I would like to contribute back to our community. Goals: • Unity. Although we may have different religious levels and lifestyles, we have always shared an amazing unique bond of unity. This must be preserved and strengthened. • Youth. Substance abuse is a sensitive problem with our youth, which must be addressed with the proper awareness and education. • Finance. Besides what we spend on paying property loans, our yearly budget is massive. I believe we can continue to look for ways to spend less and receive the same products and services. • Israel & Zionism. We need to continue supporting Israel through investing, buying Israeli products, and becoming more involved in Israeli affairs. Simon Nassimi For as long as I can remember I’ve been interested in giving my time to my community. Back when I was 15 years old a friend and I decided to get involved in the Parties & Recreation Subcommittee of the MYC. Being involved in the organization of these social events soon led to my involvement with a wider assortment of community affairs. I went on to joining the MYC and down the line served two terms as President. Being involved with community affairs wasn’t easy. As always, it can be challenging to bring so many points of view together into one collaborative effort. But to me there was nothing more gratifying than someone telling me that they met their spouse at one of the events I helped organize or a teenager who went on the Israel trip and came back a Zionist or someone becoming more spiritual from a Shabbaton we threw. My next involvement with a board was for Shira Chadasha. After I had gotten married, I wanted to learn more about our religion and I was attending their services regularly when they decided to have an election. At that point my intentions of joining the board were very different than what I ended up accomplishing. I had a vision of creating prayer services for all levels of observance where everyone would feel comfortable and enjoy. Even though we couldn’t accomplish that with the main minyan, we were able to start the very successful early minyan which many community members from all the synagogues attended. Even though I was very proud of my involvement with the “early minyan” my main accomplishment was to repay close to one million dollars of loans which were borrowed before my time as treasurer to build the building. Today, I attend the services at 130 and my love for the community hasn’t been greater. I feel that having a community like ours is a treasure which each one of us should hold dear. That is why I have accepted my nomination for the central board. I feel for us to continue to instill this unity there must be some issues addressed. I think for any traditional community assimilation should be our biggest concern. We have unfortunately lost a few members to societal factors and we need to try to prevent that for future generations. To achieve that we need to find a youth director who could help guide our children to continue to follow the right path. I think we could also benefit from a recreational center where the youth can go to on their spare time. We also need to take advantage of many of our own, very competent, community members to get more involved. We have many talented and trusted members who could help the youth in this initiative. Now the way we pay for these projects is very simple. We definitely need to continue with the initiative of this Central Board to become more financially independent with the combination of keeping costs low and raising fundraising efforts. But we need to take it a step further and find ways where the community as a whole could make money with the buying power of its members. The way we do this is by studying how other tight knit communities, who have been around for longer than we have, and addressed these issues. We have a very unique community and as a member of it I feel it to be my obligation to continue to cultivate its strengths and improve on it’s weaknesses. Hooman Rafael Yaghoutiel Born in 1972 to Dr. Lotfollah Yaghoutiel z”l and Mrs. Giti Yaghoutiel, Hooman is one of four siblings. He is the proud husband of Eileen, with children Dylan and Olivia, and is the son‐in‐
law of Mr. & Mrs. Bahram and Stella Hakimi. Experience/Education: • Director/Head of Planning & Analysis for a large investment management company • MBA in Management and Finance from NYU Stern School of Business • Lectured courses at Queens College (and a summa cum laude graduate) • Active in the pro‐Israel community • Former President of the Mashadi Youth Committee Vision: • Unity/Collaboration: encourage greater dialogue between community members across various age groups and synagogues, with the key objective of further strengthening our unity and core values. This can be achieved through, for example, more frequent town‐hall meetings, enabling community members to voice their opinions and value‐added ideas. • Financial: maintain a balanced budget and seek money‐generating opportunities for the community. With today’s competitive and challenging economy, create a venue to provide career counseling for our younger generation. • Decision Making: involve those individuals within the community (and outside as necessary) who are subject matter experts on the issues under consideration, allowing the Board to make informed decisions. Create a transparent environment and seek public opinion through various means, including surveys. Empower those who can do the best job for a given project. In short, work together towards meeting the interests of our community ─ strengthening our future while honoring our past. We are an exceptional community ‐‐ together we can ensure we keep it that way! SHAARE SHALOM Ephraim Aminoff I was born in London in 1951 to Nuriel and Tavous Aminoff. My father had emigrated to London from Mashad in 1930. After high school, I graduated from London University with an honors degree in Chemistry. After a few months teaching, I entered the accountancy profession and after 3 years became a Chartered Accountant [equivalent to a CPA]. In 1978 I started my own business as a diamond dealer. I served on the Mashadi Central Board in London for a few years until I emigrated to New York in 1991 .I have been the English editor of Shalom Week for many years and I have served on the Central Board for 6 years. In my first term as Assistant Treasurer and Recording Secretary and in my second (current) term as Treasurer. I am married to Nili [ Kordvani] and we have 3 daughters, Shirlee (Gordon) Candie[Zar] and Kellie. Naim Bakhshi Born in 1958 in Mashhad. Studied photography and photojournalism in NYU and Germain school of photography. Married to Dina Aziz and blessed with two Sons Elan and Adam. My parents are Salim and Soraya Bakhshi. My late mother inlaw was Sara Aziz. My dear Father inlaw may hashem give him refoa shlema is David Aziz. I have been involved with security of 54 since it's opening and prior to that Share Tova in queens also. I hope to serve the community in a different aspects now. May hashem help me to serve with full power. I thank the community for the support. Besalel Ben Haim I am a New York litigation attorney born in Tehran, Iran in 1977. I graduated Yeshiva University s Yeshiva College in 1999 where I was a member of the Dean s List. Upon graduation, I was awarded the Max and Sophie Manicoff Memorial Award in Talmud. I received a degree of Juris Doctor from Yeshiva University s Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in 2002. At Cardozo, I graded on to the Law Review as a member of the top 10% of my first year class and served on the Law Review from 2000‐2001. I was also a member of the Dean s Scholarship. I am completing my second term as a member of the board of Shaare Tova Synagogue. Prior to joining the Shaare Tova Board, I was asked to review the expenditures of the synagogue and after doing so, I successfully recovered over $25,000 in funds overpaid to New York City s water and sewer board. During both of my terms on the Shaare Tova board, I was elected by my colleagues on the board as the Executive Secretary. I am proud of the many accomplishments of those boards but especially proud of those in which I took a personal initiative. Those projects included renovating the basketball court and updating the library. We successfully navigated through a difficult transitional period during my tenure on the Shaare Tova Board which included some difficult lessons in fiscal discipline, which I believe I can bring to the Shaare Shalom board.I believe my background as an attorney was an asset to the Shaare Tova board, which I hope to carry to Shaare Shalom. I strongly believe that this community has provided me and continues to provide me with so much of what I have today and I feel a duty and obligation upon myself to return my services to the community. I hope to be given the opportunity to repay the çñã the Mashadi community has bestowed upon me and display my gratitude by assisting the future boards of all the community synagogues and the Central Board in any way they deem fit. Should I be elected to the Shaare Shalom board, my goals, on a micro‐scale, would be to work on discovering a solution for the cramped women s section in the side synagogue where I pray on Shabbat. We must find a way to make the women s úôéìä experience more enjoyable. Also in the side synagogue, I would like to probe the room s temperature imbalance. I would also like to explore a solution to the manner in which the men s room becomes defiled any time the building sees moderate traffic. On a grander scale, I would continue in the exemplary leadership example of our past boards and maintain the expansion of services provided while being mindful of budget constraints. Marlon Ebrani I was born in Tehran, Iran to Azizollah and Ashraf Ebrani in 1958. I completed my elementary and middle school in Iran and moved to New York in 1973 to continue my education. I completed my Bachelorette of Science in economics from Queens College in 1979. I was one of the elected members of the first Mashadi Youth Committee in New York in early 1980's, which organized many social and religious activities for the Mashadi Youth in New York. Although I have studied the laws of Judaism for many years, Mashadi culture, unity and traditions are my first priority. My goals as an elected member of the Synagogue Board are to pursue these Mashadi traditions within the synagogue grounds and to provide a positive environment to continue our father's costumes that kept us together for so long. I was born in Mashad in 1949 (1328) and lived in Eidgah, Sareh Heyte until I was 6 years old. At 7 we moved to Janaat in Mashad. I studied in the Islamic School called Taher until 4th grade. We then moved to Tehran where I attended the Jewish School called Kourosh. After I finished Kourosh I attended ORT Technical School and studied Live Electric and Auto Mechanic until I graduated. I have been working since then for the past 46 years. I married my wife Jila when I was 24. We have 1 son and 3 daughters. Our son Jonathan is married to Stefanie, and our daughters, Shirin is married to Rodney Rahmani, Debbie is married to Isaak Nassimi, and Shana is a Doctors Assistant. Thank God I see it in myself and have the opportunity to return and help and serve my community again. In the past I have served on the Central Board, Mashadi Jewish of Great Neck, Talmud Torah Board, and other boards for over 11 years. I was Treasurer of Mashadi Jewish for 3 years and during that term we built and opened the Mashadi Jewish Center. I was very active on all of these boards and served on almost every committee. I was in meeting almost every night then and on Sundays and now see it in me again to do so. I have also been running Yom Kippur Minyans, mainly at Colbeh, for the past 25 years. In this past term, I have had the honor of serving as Treasurer of the Shaare Shalom Board and as a member of the Central Board as well. I think that I can take on any challenge as a Board member and do a great job. As a Board Member I will not stop until I finish the job at hand. I believe I can take on any responsibility as a Board Member, whether it is as Treasurer, Technical and Building matters, Financial and Expense matters, Security, and Safety matters as well. I can also take on matters with regard to the youth especially parenting and role model matters. I can keep on going but I do not want to take up too much space. Thank God my family has been serving our great community for many years as well. My wife Jila served on the Sisterhood for 10 years. My son Jonathan has been serving since he was 12 years old. At 12 he started the Youth Minyan in the back of our weekly Colbeh Minyan. After graduating College he started the Singles and Young Couples Minyan in the gym of Shaare Shalom which was very successful. Since Ohr Esther ‐ YMJC opened he has been one of the head Gabbayim and has been on the YMJC Board. He has served as Chairman (President) of the Board for the past term. My daughter Shirin is serving as Vice President of the Sisterhood. Debbie and Shana have both served the community on various committees as well. Amir Kohan Mr. Amir Kohan was born in 1942 into an observant family.He went to elementary school in Mashad and graduated from high school in Tehran.He than completed 2 years of hebrew language course in Israel.Mr Kohan was one of the "talmidim of the Maktab"(Beth Midrash) of Mullah yousef Dilamani.He obtained his shechilah license from the late Mullah Yousef Dilamani and the late Mullah Yousefzar.His Community service began when he came to America and contributed various articles to the Megillah and shofar magazine. He than became one of the Farsi editors of the Shalom. week and Shalom Magazine.Every week Mr Kohan retells the story of the parasha of the week( with explanations) in Shaare Shalom as well as distributing hundreds of flyers on the same subject in easily understandable farsai.Among his other accomplishments are: Member of the Talmud Torah committee, supervising the youth minyans of the Shaare Shalom ( and previously colbeh). Every year he is appointed by the Central Board to conduct the Yom kippur services in the Hilton Hotel as well as being the chazzenand helping Rabbi Nissanian. He produced and distributed a thousand tapes consisting of the Mashadi melodies and tunes of the teffillot with the voice of Mr.yacob behnam.Mr Amir Kohan is one the main producers and editors of the farsi section of the unique Mashadi wedding album as well as the extradionary Mashadi history book.The style of writing in the 750 page history book shows how much the editors care for israel as well as the presveration of the Mashadi minhagin and wish to pass this on to future generations.He improved his general and jewish knowledge by reading hundreds of books in Hebrew.Farsi and English in his personal Library.He also usesthe daily' Torah Fax' ( Explaining the Tenach) and his own discussions with our community rabbis.He believes that the reason Hashim gives us blessings such as wealth and knowledge is to use them to help other people espically ones's family and community.In conclusion, Mr Kohan states that if he is elected as a member of the Shaare Sholam Synagogue board by our respected community he will feel obligated to do even more then before to keep the Torahs laws and continue to keep the Mashadi minhagim as well as follow our community's Rabbis, elsers and elected officers.he will surely hope to be actie in the future in the management of running of the Shaare Shalom Synagogue. David Kordvani I came to New York at the age of 16 and finished my high school and college here. It seems as if I always had a great love for my community, but I really started my community work around 20 years ago. I served 2 terms on the first Central Board and then served 2 terms in the Synagogue Board .I then took a 3 year break after which I served another term on the Synagogue Board. I believe that our present Synagogue Board has already had many accomplishments, but when I was approached by a ‘persistent’ Supervisory Council, I realized there was still much more that I could do in our synagogue and it would be selfish of me to retire. Amongst the list of things I would like to call my ‘accomplishments’ are the following; 1. Managing editor of Shalom Magazine 2. Managing editor of Shalom Week ( Distributed to 18 synagogues for the last 20 years ) 3. Managing editor of the Mashadi Wedding Album (This 5 year project would never have happened without the perseverance of my late wife Marilyn) 4. Managing editor of Rachel’s Diary [ a children’s picture book depicting the proud history of Mashadis from Allahdadi till the move to New York]. This book is being taught in our Talmud Torah and even some Yeshivas and creates knowledge and pride in our youngsters. 5. I helped over 1200 Mashadis register to vote thus giving our community a major influence and upper hand in village politics. [Please note that none of these projects could have come to fruition without the selfless dedication of tens of volunteers.] These are some of the things that our Shaare Shalom Board has accomplished during the last 3 years.. 1. By far the single most important one has been the reestablishment of the Gym Minyan for teenagers. Only 3 years ago we hardly had a minyan on any Shabbat[ maybe 8 to 10 boys and no more than 4 girls}. However through a series of initiatives and promotions and also by the selection of the right directors we have succeeded in attracting over 250 youngsters and teenagers to attend our different minyans on the middle floor and the gym on a weekly basis. 2. We extended the women’s section in the back and succeeded in attracting over 100 new young ladies, who never had seats, to attend the synagogue almost every week. 3. We established an annual bar mitzva/ bat mitzva welcoming day to our Gym by giving each teenager a beautiful certificate welcoming them as an adult member of the Mashadi Community. 4. We established a tradition that all high school graduates register to vote on the Community Graduation day. 5. We feel that we have improved the decorum in the main sanctuary during the Torah reading [especially when there are not too many shiras] 6. Reprinted the Mashadi Passover Hagadah by Mr. Robert Livi., These are my goals for the next term, if elected: 1. My priority is to make sure that our Gym Minyan and Youth Program on the middle floor will be even more successful. I feel that as unbelievable as it is that 250 young people come to us every single week, there are at least as many, if not more, who do not attend any minyans who are in the same age bracket. I feel that I still have the patience, experience and the urge to bring more and more kids to this minyan. 2. My priority is to extend the other side of the ladies section in the back by going 2 rows forward in order to have a uniform women’s section with beautiful matching portable dividers. This could be accomplished by re‐
seating a few gentlemen from the back rows to the front [with their consent]. 3. Create a new “easy to read” Hashkava Board (Mourners Board) with working lights in order to honor our lost ones. 4. Professionally decorate our social hall with the help of our Central Board and donor families in order to attract more events and possibly even weddings to our synagogue. 5. We are in the final stages of printing the ‘Book of Halacha & Mashadi Customs’ by our own Rabbi Ben Haim . This authoritative book will hopefully preserve our Mashadi ways and customs forever. 6. Finally, try to create a fun atmosphere in order to attract all different types of people while maintaining the holiness of our synagogue. In other words, I would very much like to make Shaare Shalom Synagogue the ‘place to be’ at on any given Shabbat for our young and old, men and woman alike. OHR ESTHER Tony Aziz I have no relation to the other Tony Aziz. I am 29 years old, the son of Rosalyn and Fereydoon Aziz. My wife is Stephanie Aziz, the daughter of Sima and Hooshang Nematzadeh, and even though I am not directly related to my father‐in‐law I guess you can say I have politics in my blood. After graduating high school in Great Neck, I went to Israel and served in the IDF for 1 year and 3 months. I will forever cherish that experience which made me a Zionist for life. I have participated in organizing many Pro‐Israel events for our community over the last few years and I am always accessible to community members that would like my help in starting new programs to support Israel. I have a Degree in Finance and used to work for JP Morgan and for a hedge fund called Citadel. My financial background has given me an analytical mind and strong problem solving skills. I also have a 1 year old son, which has given me strong diaper changing skills. I have 3 reasons for running for YMJC board: 1) I enjoy volunteering and want to continue my efforts of community service. 2) To try to bring an end to political divide in our community and bring back some unity. 3) To improve the quality of the chulent on Shabbats. I appreciate the opportunity to serve you and hope to have your vote. Oliver Etessami I have been blessed throughout my life to have role models who not only taught me about the importance of Mashadi life and our community, but who exemplified what it means to be a good person and leader. As the grandchild of Mr. Abdolrahim Etessami and the late Mr. Abdolrahim Zar z"l, I have learned how gratifying it is to serve our community and to do so with a full and happy heart. It is my goal to give back to the community who has given me so much since my youth. I believe that in order to maintain our unity and to expand on the possibilities for future generations, it is important that we keep an open mind to different options and suggestions, and work together to have our Kanissa's needs met. If elected, I look forward to collaborating with the upcoming Kanissa board members, and will strive to serve and better our community. Marco Hadjibay My name is Marco Hadjibay son of Moris and Mandana Hadjibay. I am a graduate of Great Neck North High School and Boston University. I believe that what makes our community so special is our unity which has lasted for decades. As the community grows we need to make sure that this unity does not fade away. This should be done by having programs involving the youth so that this spirit of unity is instilled in them. I look forward to be able to help our community in any way possible for it to flourish. Afshin Hakimian My name is Afshin Hakimian (Ghaffarzadeh), I am married to Ghoncheh (Nabavian) Hakimian and my I have three children Corbin, Cate and Ross. I went to Yeshiva Dov Revel for middle school and then to Ezra academy for high school. I Went to queens college for 3 years and have been working ever since. I have had many experiences serving the community first for a few years on the youth sub committee in Shaare Tova years in Queens and helping out on all youth related subjects at the time. Recently I have been helping out with the Yom Kippur Minyan of Colbeh since its start and more recently helping Mr. David Hazghiyan run it. I have an interest to help our synagogue and community grow and prosper in the future and am looking to help out in any capacity as needed. Kami Kalaty Born in Tehran in 1975. After moving to the US in the late 70’s, most of my childhood was in Kew Gardens, where I attended Yeshiva Dov Revel. Moved to Great Neck in my pre‐
teen years, where I went to Great Neck North. I graduated from NYU, with degrees in Marketing and Information Systems. Employed since then in the family business. Member of MYC for 2 terms: Treasurer of MYC for 1 term, Editor of HaChodesh, Head of Parties and Recreation subcommittee Married to Dina with 3 children (ages 8 years, 4 years, and 4 years) Served on YMJC Board for the 2010‐2013 term . My primary area of focus during my first term was launching “Community Programming”. Along with an amazing team and our program directors, we maximized use of 130 Steamboat Road as not only a Synagogue and youth center but a FAMILY center‐ catering to the social, religious and educational needs of our youth (ranging from newborns to teenagers to young adults) and young families as a whole and seniors while adhering to our cherished Mashadi and Jewish values. My goals for my 2nd term on YMJC board continue to be the same as my first term: • Continue with building the success of our Community Programming • Explore creative ways to increase attendance of Kanissa on a regular basis , especially by our community’s women. • Through programming and based on my running and race experience, promoting Health and Fitness to our community members • Bringing Chesed opportunities to the community • Security • Involvement in Shabbat Kanissa affairs • Involvement in searching for a prominent Rabbi for our Kanissa and for our youth’s future • Aid with Fundraising events, such as annual Charity Auction By serving on the YMJC board, I will hope to continue prioritizing our community’s needs. Leon Kashi Born in Milan, Italy in 1971. Raised in Milan and Attended School of Jewish Community of Milan. Member of board and director of Centro Sociale Mautrizio Levi: Treasurer and director for 3 terms for a social center membership for Jewish singles of Milan. Participated in many aspects of security team for the 3 synagogues in Milan frequented by Mashadi community. Moved to Great Neck in 1993. Married with 3 children (ages 9, 7 and 5 years). Currently helping at YMJC with security volunteering and services as Gabbay for the YMJC Synagogue. Goal for my term on YMJC: Help to increase attendance of Kanissah and to maintain a respectful decorum and keep the services to a more efficient and timely fashion. Establish programs geared to Zionism and Jewish Heritage program inside the 130 building. Educate our Kanissah attendees about the importance of security for our building during services as well as other days and to create more awareness. Regulate the food distributed during Shiras (especially unhealthy and allergy foods for kids) and try to offer healthier options. Focusing on creating more fundraising events. Joseph Kashimallak My name is Joseph Kashimallak and I am running for the YMJC Synagogue Board. I am married to my wife, Jasmine, and we have a son, Gavin. I attended high school at Great Neck South, and Graduated from Boston University in 2005 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. I served on the MYC board for three years and had a hand in organizing events for the youth as well as organizing financial matters for the board. For many years I have respected our community leaders for the time and work they put into our programs and events, and I have been active in the events available to all. I’m proud to be a part of this community and would be honored to give back. Daniel Koren I was born in Jerusalem, Israel to Joseph (Kordevani) and Yehudite (Livian) Koren and am the oldest of six siblings: Sarit, Anat, Dalia, Benjamin, and Ruth. I'm married to Sepideh (Elian) and we are blessed with 4 wonderful children: Naomi, Abigail, Joseph and Jacob. My great grandparents immigrated to Jerusalem in the 1920's from Meshed. They were instrumental in developing the Mashadi community in Israel and later my grandparents serving as leaders in the community in Milano and New York. Community and kanissa matters have always been important in my family. I am a firm believer in having all the community members involved in the kanissa continue to expand the wonderful work that our 130 board has so tirelessly accomplished so that we can secure a better future for the generations ahead. If elected I pledge to serve my community to the best of my abilities and I look forward to hearing the opinions, suggestions and needs of all our men, women and children in order to better our kanissa. Andy Levian I can proudly say that I have just completed my first 3 year term on the 130 board and quite honestly, the experience has exceeded all of my expectations. As the youngest member running, I went into the last election wanting nothing more than to be a voice of the singles minyan, with the hopes that our vote would count as much as any other vote when it came to decisions changing the future of our building. I could never have imagined that a group of 9 of us, with the help of other very helpful community members, would be able to accomplish so much in such a short time span. Being involved and witnessing the addition of over 100 new programs we now have, as well as being a co‐chair of the now annual Chinese Auction, I can truly say we have not only made immediate differences but ones that will last for a long time to come. Elected or not elected, I am really looking forward to being as active as I was this next 3 years and seeing how much further we can take our community. Benjamin Nabavian My name is Benjamin Nabavian, the son of Manouchehr and Liza. I have just turned 27 years old and am graduate of Binghamton University in 2008. I am currently a Gabbai of the 130 singles minyan, and have been for 4 years now. As a gabbai, I have met with the central board on many occasions to address our minyans needs, and I have been instrumental in bringing our 2 esteemed Rabbis, Adam Sabzevari and Mosheh Aziz downstairs to run our minyan. Also, for 2 years now I have been running a Sunday morning shiur with Rabbi Adam that has been very successful, averaging 40 attendees per week. Also, I have previously been involved with 130 programs such as @130 and Ivread, and was on the board of the last and current Chinese Auctions. If elected, my main goal to serviing the community and the YMJC will be to feature our 2 bright, young and gifted Rabbis, and also usher in a new generation of youth which will be entering our building in the near future, while still serving the many people around my age, both single and married, with their needs. I also look forward to working with current and past board members, as well as other boards such as the Central Board in order to achieve our goals. Daniel Nassimi My name is Daniel Nassimi son of Mehdi & Ania Nassimi. I am happily married to my beautiful wife Chantal Nassimi (Daughter of Miriam and Sami Hajibay). I have attended North Shore Hebrew Academy until high school then made the switch to Great Neck North. For college I attended two years at Lynn University located in Boca Raton Florida and then transferred to Baruch College in NYC. My entire life I have been surrounded by community affairs as it started with my Late Grandfather and my late Grandmother. My Father was on the Central Board and involved with many other Jewish Organizations as he as devoted a large part of his life to helping the community. My mother on the other hand is very involved in community matters as well; she runs the Senior Citizen Program at Shaare Shalom. I am looking forwarding to continuing this family tradition and giving back to the community all that has given me so much. David Zar My name is David Zar and I am the son of Roya & Jamshid Zar. I am blessed to be married to Amanda Zar, daughter of Lida & Essagh Azizi. We have a daughter Nadine and g‐d willing expecting in March. I graduated Hofstra University in 2002 with a Bachelors degree in Finance and minor in Economics. I work in the Real Estate business and manage properties in New York City. Part of my management responsibilities are working with vendors, contractors and problem solving. Community programs and budgeting (saving money) are some roles I hope to play an active role in and if elected, I will do everything I can to help our community continue to grow and prosper. After finishing high school in 1980, I migrated to the United States, first living in Israel, then spending 5 years in Italy working in the jewelry business. I currently work for LeVian Corp. I am honored to have been asked to help serve our community. While in Italy i was responsible to collect donations from Mashadis in Italy and send them to Israel. Since 1985 I have been living in NY and have been a part of the community here and have assisted any community board in any way neccessary at anytime they have needed for my help. I love my community very much and am willing to do anything I can to help. Goals: If elected I am willing to do anything that the Shaare Tova boards needs me to do. My goal is to do anything to help solve problems in the community and to help better the community. Behrouz Hakimian Simone Kamali Gideon Levy My name is Gideon Levy. I am a U.S. born Mashadi who is involved in many organizations that service our community, one being Hatzoloh for the past 20 years. I have been a board member of Shaare Tova, as well as Gabay, for two terms, I have been a resident of Kew Gardens my whole life and I have been here when Shaare Tova was purchased as land to become a synagogue to service our community. Since Shaare Tova has undergone several changes in the past several years, I believe that we MUST act quickly in accomplishing many issues that will secure the asset of the shule in the hands of the Mashadi s. I hope that in the next four years to be able to assist in accomplishing these tasks. Shahrokh Liviem My name is Shahrokh Liviem. I am completing my first term as a member of the Shaare Tova Board. Over the past few years, under the guidance of Rabbi Avraham Nissanian, Shaare Tova has become a center of Torah Education well known by many Jewish Communities. Also, with the support of our board members, we were able to modernize the synagogue in many different ways. My goal is for Shaare Tova to grow financially and spiritually. I would like to advertise our beautiful ballroom and our new website so it can generate business for the Synagogue. Raised in Iran, and graduated High School, from ORT of Iran in 1962. College degrees: Received Bachelors and Masters degrees in Industrial Engineering in Kansas, USA in 1971. Job positions: • College instructor in Tehran from 1972‐1974. • Project manager of imperial iranian navy headquarters in Tehran 1974‐1976. • Personal Manager of Kodak of Iran in 1977. • French nuclear power plant project in Abadan, Iran, 1978. • Established a business as a jewelry designer, and importer and manufacturer of color stones, in 1979, and is self employed until now. Married in 1979 in Iran. Moved to America and had 3 children. Two elder daughters are married with children, the youngest is single. I have been on the board of Shaare Tova for 18 years, since the passing of my father A"H. It is my goal to continue the Mashadi traditions. I am semiretired and that enables me to keep up with all aspects going on, on a daily and weekly basis, in Shaare Tova.
