A Short Survey of Baseball Art
A Short Survey of Baseball Art Curated by Carrie Lederer and George Krevsky April 3 – June 12, 2016 at Bedford GALLERY “Whoever wants to know the heart and mind of America had better learn baseball.” —Jacques Barzun Arthur Miller, Satchel Paige, 1942, 2008, acrylic on masonite, 11 x 15 inches The arrival of spring means one thing to many: the beginning of baseball season. Safe at Home: A Short Survey of Baseball Art celebrates America’s beloved pastime by bringing the excitement of the stadium into the gallery through the artwork of both local and national artists. It was a privilege to co-curate this exhibition with art dealer George Krevsky, who for the past decade hosted an annual show of baseball art at his San Francisco gallery. Baseball crosses racial, economic, and generational divides as a game that provides entertainment in the best of times and comfort during some of the nation’s toughest moments, including The Great Depression, World War II and the Civil Rights Movement. It also symbolizes tradition — gathering around the television or meeting at the stadium to root for our home team. Baseball remains strongly anchored to the identity and spirit of the American people, and the artworks in Safe at Home capture the soul and essence of the game. Safe at Home was funded with a generous grant from the Lesher Foundation with additional support by the Diablo Regional Arts Association. —Carrie Lederer, Curator of Exhibitions and Programs Exhibiting Artists Carl Aldana Peter Allegaert Kirk Anspach Michael Arcega Ray Beldner Jeff Bender Libby Black Noah Breuer Stacey Carter Ann Chahbandour Rob Cox Kevin Dame Joe Davidson Gary Davis Dana DeKalb Elaine de Kooning Phil Dewey Lauren DiCioccio Willard Dixon John Dobbs Jennifer Ettinger Lawrence Ferlinghetti Kat Flyn Jon Francis Milt Friedly Debbie Gallas Jessica Gandolf Barry Gifford Harry Glaubach Sarah Gopher Richard Newman Claes Oldenburg Roger Patrick Raymond Pettibon Nan Phelps Valentin Popov S.
