has a deluxe binding
with metal latches and
thick back and front covers. Letters found in the
Bible are from the 1890s.

Alvey, lost nearly all his
sight, due to age related
causes. This is not noteworthy. However, three
years later, the same
man became faint and
dizzy, so he called 911.
He began to feel better
on the ambulance ride
to the hospital, but he
wanted to be checked
out anyway. By the time
the doctor made it to his
room, Alvey’s sight had
been restored. Even after
thorough examinations
by two ophthalmologists,
no cause was found.
• You’ve probably heard
or seen pictures of bioluminescent lagoons, but
the bacteria that cause
this phenomenon are not
limited to small bays and
inlets. In fact, there is a
bioluminescent patch of
ocean to be found off the
horn of Africa. “Patch”
may not be quite the
right word to describe
it, though; the area that
glows is the same size as
the state of Connecticut.

sweatiest part of the
human body is not the
armpits; it’s the palms
of the hands.

If you spend significant time in Penn’s Woods, you’ll
probably agree that our most commonly obser ved game
animal is the squirrel. Here in Western PA, we are blessed
with an abundance of both fox and gray squir
rels. It
doesn’t matter if I’m hunting deer, turkey, bear, pheasant,
or even waterfowl; it seems I always see squir rels. A typical day during deer season from before sunrise until after
sunset will normally involve watching 1 or 2 dozen squirrels going about their daily activities. I view squirrels as
my “stealth barometer”, believing that if I’m quiet and still
enough to see squir rels, I’m also going to see deer . I fi nd
that squirrel sightings keep me focused.
Almost ever y hunter can tell a favorite squir rel story.
Their athletic tr ee-climbing abilities and acr obatic antics
often leave obser vers smiling. Sometimes, their aggr essive chases involving two or three squirrels go on for several minutes, up and down tr ees, across the ground, over
logs, and around other trees like a barber pole. Their deliberate foraging and bur ying mast (acorns, hickory nuts,
beechnuts, walnuts, and other nuts) r emind us squir rels
know to cache food when abundant for the winter ahead.
Occasionally, you’ll be afi eld at the peak of the mast cr op
and stand in awe as a steady “rain” of oak leaves and their
attached acorns come falling to the gr ound as squir rels
cut them of f to add to their lar der. You might have the
privilege of watching a squir rel build a leaf nest or car ry
materials into its den tr ee to pr epare for colder weather .
Some hunters get to experience having a squirrel climb
onto their tree stand (I’ve had that happen 6x) and twice
I’ve even had squirrels start to climb up my pant leg while
I’ve stood motionless in my tr ee stand. Squir rels’ incessant barks, alarm calls, and chatter make the woods a far
more interesting place.
Over the years, I’ve had some unusual, humorous, and
even strange encounters with squir rels burned into my
memory that are worth sharing. First, I lear ned the tr ue
meaning of patience and remaining motionless fr om a
gray squirrel when I was in high school. During ar chery
season, I had climbed into my tr ee stand well befor e first
shooting light. While still dark, I tur ned around rather
quickly when I heard a noise directly behind me. It was a
squirrel climbing a tree only fi ve feet away and it fr oze at
my chest height since I had star tled it. That happened at
6:35 AM and I did not climb down until 10:45 AM. For over
four hours, that squirrel remained motionless while I was
in my tree stand. Only an occasional slow eye blink and the
slightest tail movement indicated it was alive. That squirrel remained in place until I crawled down that mor ning
and was gone when I returned later that afternoon. From
that experience, I lear ned the extr eme patience of war y
wildlife and the requirement for me to be very deliberate
and observant when I hunt.
Once while deer hunting at a for mer “red tag” ar ea, I
went into the woods befor e first light and found an excellent stand over-looking a well-traveled hollow . Approximately 20 yards to my front was an old oak den tr ee, over
6 feet in diameter , with all its branches br oken off and
numerous cavities excavated into its hollow cor e. Over
the first hour of daylight, I had the privilege of watching a
“squirrel commune” come to life as eleven different squirrels came out of the various holes and went their separate
ways. Next week, I’ll share several more memorable squirrel stories that ar e part of what makes time in the woods
and amongst its inhabitants so special. God Bless, Be

The fear of the number 13, triskaidekaphobia, gets a fair amount of attention in our culture. It gets referenced frequently in motion pictures and is apparent when that floor number is omitted in a tall hotel building. There are other numbers that people fear. The fear of the number 4 is called tetraphobia. Fear of 23 is called 23 enigma. Numbers give us a way to measure things. I found it interesting as I researched how
we came to have measurements that have been standardized. The origin of the foot seems fairly obvious. The problem arises when it’s time to determine whose foot is to be used. In ancient Europe there was the
Roman foot and the North German foot. Some were divided into 16 units and others 12. The Greek foot wasn’t even the same measurement in all of the Greek cities. Then came the new foot that was 10/11 of the
old foot. There had to be some people that didn’t like any of the feet mentioned. They probably didn’t like how their feet looked in sandals either. Surprisingly the furlong remained an eighth of a mile and the rod
also stayed the same length through all of this foot shuf fling. A rod is 15 old feet or 16.5 new feet in case you wer e wondering. The yard has an interesting story behind it even if it’s possibly a fable. Henr y I of
England invented the length by measuring the distance from his nose to the tip of his thumb. The banter about whose nose or thumb to be used was avoided. The King can do these things if he wants to. It’s too
bad that the whole foot thing wouldn’t have been that simple. The cloth sellers ran with it. They sold cloth by the “yard and handful.” The handful part was an extra part added to the measurement to avoid paying
taxes. I’m sure that the customer was paying for the extra but there was no tax collected on the handfull. It wasn’t long before the revenue people insisted on a measurement that included “yards and inches.” King
David of Scotland defined the Scottish inch as the width of a man’s thumb at the base of the nail. As you may have guessed ther
e was an allowance for a small, medium or large man’s hand. In search of a universally
accepted measure the meter came into existence. The decimal based system was proposed by John Wilkins, an Englishman, in 1668. There was no talk of noses and thumbs in this new system. The standard for
the meter would be one ten millionth the distance between the Nor th Pole and the Equator of our planet. That must not have been precise enough though. Since 1983 the meter has been “the length of the path
travelled by light in vacuum during a time interval of 1/299,792,458 of a second.” Who could argue with that? And I thought that using body measurements was complicated. ©2013 WBB

Good marriages have a balance. The practical r ealities of daily living ar e enhanced by the joy and spontaneity of continually falling in love with each other.
Realism can help a husband to see that he is taking his wife for granted and is
not being sensitive to her feelings. It can cause a wife to see that her critical comments are tearing down her husband’s self-respect.
Realism is not enough, however . Romance, often discar ded after the wedding,
keeps a marriage from growing dull. It can prevent the kind of situation depicted
in the cartoon of an elderly couple sitting on the front porch of their home. The
husband is saying, “Sometimes, Sarah, when I think of how much you mean to
me, I can hardly keep from telling you so.”
Paul’s words in Ephesians 5 encourage a love between two people that r eflects
Christ’s self-sacrificing devotion to His church. In addition, it’s a love fi lled with
kindness and tenderness.
Whether you’re dating or have been married half a year or half a century, Christ
can help you balance your relationship with realism and romance. Keep drawing
on His love and see what it does for your marriage.
