SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
REPORT
VOLUME 44 • ISSUE 1
Dear Wildcats, Parents, and Friends
As your new Eastmont High School Principal, I would like to say
welcome to what is going to be an incredible 2013-2014 school-year. I am
going into my 18th year at Eastmont High School and I have never been
part of a year that promised more for our students.
This is going to be a year of change, growth, and opportunity. We
have changed many of our daily operations to accommodate
construction and a campus that spans a larger area. Read this newsletter
carefully and stay tuned for more information while we will keep you up
-to-date as to our various daily adjustments. Please visit our website
frequently at www.ehs.eastmont206.org to watch for new developments
and changes.
We have grown
several of our programs
like College In The High
School, Advanced
Placement, Career and
Technical Education, and
interventions, which will
give our Eastmont High
First day of school. (2010)
school students more
opportunities to achieve, earn college credit, and get help if struggling.
It is an honor to serve this community as your Eastmont High
School Principal, and I look forward to seeing familiar faces and
meeting new people as we start the 2013-2014 school year.
Together let’s make 2013-2014 your best school year ever!

Athletics/Activities Handbook
The EHS Athletic Department
has developed an Athletic/Activity Handbook for parents and student
athletes. This handbook is a resource of information and is the first step in
the clearance procedure for a student-athlete. You can pick up the
handbook at the EHS Athletic Office or go online and view/print at the EHS
Athletic Department Website.
Fall Sports Clearance Nights
In an effort to meet the needs of
families that require after work hours clearance opportunities, EHS Athletics
Department is offering the following clearance event for fall athletes:
August 19th 6:00-7:30 PM Fall Sports Clearance Night
at the old District Office (460 9th St. NE).
The Athletic Office will be open for Fall Clearance of all athletes August

Mandatory Parent Meeting Nights
A parent or guardian of an
EHS Student-Athlete must attend a parent meeting before their son or
daughter may compete in an athletic contest. The meeting will cover a
variety of topics that are crucial for a parent to be aware of to help insure
their son or daughter has a positive athletic experience. We are offering
two meetings to provide enough space for attendees. Following the parent
meeting will be individual sport information meetings.

SCIENCE ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENT In 2011, House Bill 1410 delayed
the science assessment graduation requirement until the class of 2015. The class
of 2014 does NOT have to pass a state science exam to be eligible for a
diploma. Students in those classes must pass the reading and
writing HSPE and one math end-of-course exam, or stateapproved alternatives.
Beginning with class of 2015 students will have to pass the
reading and writing HSPE, two end-of-course exams in algebra
1 and geometry, and an end-of-course exam in biology.
ADVISORY
PROGRAM
An Excellent Question!
 It’s the path Eastmont has
chosen to meet the state
requirement to provide our
students a transition plan for
after high school.
 Your student’s Advisory class
is made up of the same
students and advisor during
all three years at EHS. This
arrangement provides an
opportunity to build a
continuing relationship with a
knowledgeable faculty
member. It is our hope that
your student’s advisor
becomes a comfortable
resource for their questions
and concerns.
 The EHS ADVISORY
program culminates with a
Senior Showcase evening. At
this event, seniors present
the Plan for their Future.
This year, Senior Showcase is
scheduled for the evening of
Thursday, May 8th.
This year, Advisory classes
will meet on twelveMondays
beginning in January.
The curriculum for Advisory
is posted on the our website
www.ehs.eastmont206.org and
you are welcome to review it
at your convenience. Advisory
is a required credit and grades
are posted on FamilyLink.
If you have any questions
concerning ADVISORY, please
contact your student’s advisor or
Julie Kuntz, Goal 4 Coordinator.

2013-14 COLLEGE TESTING SCHEDULE
S.A.T.
A.C.T. Tests
Both the
and
are used for admission into 4-year colleges
or universities. Most colleges will accept either test for admissions/scholarship
programs. The tests tend to be significantly different, so students may wish to
take both tests. You may retake a test if you are not satisfied with your initial
results, as only the higher score is considered for both scholarships and
admission purposes. Many of our students are not sure if they will attend
college and others will not know if they can afford to attend until they go
through the financial aid process (F.A.F.S.A) during their senior year. So, we
encourage as many students as possible to consider taking these tests.
Sophomores
may take the P.S.A.T. to practice for the SAT and to practice
for the PSAT/NMSQT which is offered to juniors as the National Merit
Scholarship Qualifying Test. This test will be given Wed., October 16, 7:45
AM to 12:00 PM. The cost is $15.00. Pay EHS bookkeeper prior to testing.
The PLAN is the practice ACT and will be offered Wed., November 13, 8:30
to 11:30 AM to sophomores only. The $15.00 fee must be pre-paid to EHS.
Juniors
should consider taking the PSAT/NMSQT (practice SAT and
qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Corporation’s scholarships).
The test is given at the same time as sophomores take it: Wed., Oct. 16
7:45 AM to 12:00 PM. Cost is $15.00, pre-paid to the bookkeeper.
The SAT and ACT should be taken by juniors in the spring of their
junior year. Test dates are listed below.
Seniors:
We recommend seniors retake either or both SAT and ACT in the
fall if they wish to attempt to improve scores earned last spring. If tests were
not taken last spring, take them in early fall.
Juniors and Seniors:
Pay very close attention to the Regular Registration
Postmark Deadline. You can sign up after the regular deadline, but there is a
late fee to pay. Avoid the late fee and register on time. Register on-line or
use the registration forms in the counseling office. Practice questions are
available on the websites and in brochures in the counseling office. Testing
runs from 8:15 AM-1:30 PM (8:15-12:30 for ACT). Doors open at 7:15 AM.

AND its own building! The
school’s new home is at 460
9th Street...the former
Eastmont District Office.
FOUR DAILY SESSIONS
meeting Monday-Thursday
Two AM Sessions .. 8:00-11:00
Two PM Sessions .. 11:30-2:30
In addition to nice, new digs,
there are other enticing
changes for this year.
 Students will have the
opportunity to catch up on a
few classes at EHS during any
of their six periods with
assistance from 9th Street
Academy teachers..
 Also new this year is a room
dedicated for our student
parents to help with those
days of no childcare.
 We are also planning some
cool projects and school
community building
experiences...stay tuned for more!
Some things have not
changed: Students still earn
credits toward a high school
diploma with on-line courses
using APEX presented in an
independent study and selfpaced format
Anyone interested in joining
the 9th Street Academy

Late Start
Mondays
The Eastmont School
District will continue
the Late Start Monday
schedule for 2013-2014.
WHY? This schedule allows
time for staff development and
collaboration to occur
without taking teachers out of
the classroom and away from
teaching.
Every Monday, beginning
September 9th Eastmont
High School will be operating
on a special bell schedule with
1st period beginning at 8:54
AM. All 6 periods will meet
with each class time being
reduced by 11 minutes. Zero
hour classes will remain at
their regular scheduled time of
6:45 AM to 7:40 AM. Please
see Schedule B - Late Start
Monday on the bell schedule
for more information and
specific class times. The
addition of 10 minutes to each
day, make late start Mondays
possible without losing any
instructional time on an annual
calculation.
NEW FOR 2014~
Advisory on Late Start
Mondays! After Winter
Break, Late Start Mondays will
also include our Advisory
Classes. Beginning January 13,
2014, we will be using
Schedule G on most Mondays
through the beginning of May.
Advisory will not meet before
January.

Coordinator; 888-1292

CARS, PARKING
AND VISITORS
There will be no parking permits issued for the
2013-2014 school year. Parking will be on a first
come first served basis.
 Parking for Students at the Sterling Middle School Campus will be very
limited. There will be student parking in the main parking lot at EHS and
also along 3rd street. Parking will also be available in the EHS baseball
parking lot and the lower Sterling soccer field parking lot.
 There is no student parking in designated EHS or Sterling Middle School
Staff parking lots.
 There is no parking for Students in or in front of the Eastmont YMCA
parking lot. Students who violate this will have their cars towed at the
owners expense.
 We ask that during this year of transition students driving to school are
respectful of our neighbors around both campuses. Please do not block
driveways or mailboxes. Or park where it is posted no parking.
 Staff Only: Students who violate “Staff Only” parking lot restriction will
be ticketed. Repeated violations may result in the towing of the vehicle at
OWNER’S expense.
 Avoid Bus Loading Area: A growing safety concern is caused by students
and parents driving through the bus loading and unloading area off of Iowa
Street. This area is well posted and is for bus access only. Please do not
use this area as a means to exit parking areas.
Visitors: Several parking stalls are reserved for our visitor’s convenience in
the front row of the main lot nearest the school building. We ask that all
visitors register their vehicles at the Main Office.
Eastmont Hugh School takes the safety and security
of our students very seriously.
WILDCAT REPORT NEWSLETTER IS STAYING G R E E N !

Emergency Alert:
NOTES FROM THE NURSE
PA G E 1 6 - W I L D C A T R E P O R T
The District has three nurses who share their time
between schools. This means that a nurse is not
always at the school, but can be reached for
emergencies. In the absence of the nurse, first aid
will be administered as necessary through the
Administrative Office where staff has been trained to
respond to emergencies. If the nature of the
emergency is severe and staff is unable to reach any parent or
emergency contact, an ambulance will be summoned, if appropriate.
Students who become ill at school are to report to the health office
with a note from their teacher. Students should not use their own
phones to make calls home asking their parent to pick them up as
this creates confusion when the student checks out of school.
Efforts will be made to contact parents/guardians to determine
whether the child should go home or be allowed to remain in the
health room for a period of time.
Near the beginning of each school year, parents are asked to complete a
health questionnaire regarding any health concerns of their child. This is
important to fill out, even if there are no concerns. If the student has any type
of life threatening health condition, the school nurse will contact the parent to
develop a plan to respond to possible emergencies at school. If a child develops
a health concern during the school year, the parent should communicate this
information to the school nurse as soon as possible.
If your child takes medication it should be dispensed at home if possible. If
the student must receive medications at school, either prescription or over
the counter, an authorization form must be filled out by the child’s doctor and
signed by the parent before any medication may be dispensed. A student is
never allowed to carry medication with him/her unless the nurse has received
the necessary forms and has made arrangements for the student to carry it. In
most circumstances any medication used at school will be kept securely in the
health office and will be dispensed by trained staff members. In the event of a
sudden need for a medication, the parents are always welcome to come to the
school to administer the medication to their own child.
Most doctor offices have this form available or you can hold down the Ctrl key and click here for the on-line copy of:
Authorization of ORAL MEDICATION at School
Link Transit Has Options

the Eastmont School District has
established the following behaviors to
constitute exceptional misconduct:
1) Possession or use of alcohol or
other drugs or possession of
paraphernalia - In accordance with
WAC 180-40-260(2), the Eastmont
School District has established the

Possession, use, sale, or delivery of
alcohol or other drugs, including overthe-counter and prescription, on
school premises or at schoolsponsored events.
b) Paraphernalia: Possession, use, sale,
or delivery of paraphernalia intended
for storage, use of distribution of
alcohol or other drugs, including overthe-counter and prescription while on

DISCIPLINARY ACTION
(for violation of unsafe misconduct)
Students determined to be in violation of
the School District’s Alcohol or Other
Drugs policy, as defined above, are subject
to the following disciplinary action:
First Offense: Forty- (90) days of
suspension, reduced to ten 10 days
with parent/student signed agreement
to the following Intervention Model.
Intervention Model:
 Outside screening/assessment with a
State Certified Chemical Dependency
Professional must occur as soon after the
infraction that an appointment can by
made (not to exceed 4 weeks), to
determine the level of care
recommended for the individual
student’s chemical use. Verification of
the assessment appointment will be given
to the Student Assistance Specialist
within 24 hours after the suspension, OR
on the first working day a State Certified
Chemical Dependency Agency is open.
 A urinalysis screening must be completed
within the first 24 hours after the
suspension, OR on the first working day
a screening agency is open. Verification
of the urine screen and a copy of the
results will be given to the Student
Assistant Specialist.
 The student must follow the
recommendations stemming from the
screening/assessment. In all cases, the
student must complete a minimum of 5
hours of counseling and/or education
with a State Certified Chemical
Dependency Professional or Student
Assistant Specialist. The cost of the
intervention and recommended followup shall be borne by the student and his/
her parent/guardian.
A student who meets the requirements
of the above Intervention Model, and has
the suspension reduced to 10 days, will be
given the opportunity to make up all work
in classes missed due to the suspension.
Second Offense: Long-term suspension
not to exceed 90 school days.
Third Offense: Long-term suspension to
expulsion.
The building principal, or his designee,
and hearing officer have the authority to
grant exceptions to this disciplinary action
in cases involving extenuating and/or
exceptional circumstances, including
but not limited to selling and delivery
of controlled substances on school
property.
Minor in Possession
The school will notify a parent/guardian,
police, and/or juvenile authorities.
INTERNET USE Because the Internet is such an important research tool,
students are offered access to the Internet at EHS. On the first day of
school students will receive the Eastmont School District Student Use Form
and the Parent Release Form-Network Policy. Once these two forms have
been reviewed, signed, and returned to the 1st period teacher, access to
the internet will be activated for your student. If you DO NOT want your
student to have access to the Internet through his/her school network
login, you have the opportunity to check the appropriate box on the Parent
Release Form to block such access.
State-Mandated
Attendance Laws
Enforced at EHS
State-mandated laws require
accurate attendance reporting.
Your early morning call to the
Attendance Office will
excuse your student’s absence
and enable us to accurately
report his or her attendance.
In addition, your call makes
absent notes and admit slips
unnecessary upon their
return. It also notifies their
teachers, in advance, that they
have been excused for missing
classes that day.
REMINDER: A phone call
or signed note is necessary
prior to a student checking
out for appointments during
the school day.
We also appreciate your
prompt response to the
phone dialer notification when
your student has had an
unexcused absence in one or
more classes. This allows us
to correct the attendance if
necessary. If you are not able
to reach us during office
hours of 7 AM to 3:30 PM
you may leave a message using
the voicemail system to
excuse your student.
A detailed description of the
attendance policy is outlined
in the EHS Student Handbook
and is available on the EHS
website.
We welcome inquiries and
questions at any time
regarding your student’s
attendance. Debbie Wirth is
in the Attendance Office
ready to assist you, 884-6665
and press 4.

Highly Qualified
Requirement
The “No Child Left Behind
Act” required that teachers of
core academic subjects be
deemed "Highly Qualified" to
teach the subject matter for
which they are responsible.
Newly hired teachers in Title I
programs or schools must
meet the highly qualified
requirement immediately.
Washington State's definition
of a highly qualified teacher
requires teachers of core
academic subjects to hold full
state certification, have at least
a bachelor's degree, and
demonstrate competency in
the teacher's assigned subject
areas. As a parent if you want
to inquire about the
qualifications of your student’s
teachers, you may contact the
