Fasting produces benefits that endure beyond the 40 days of
Lent. Fasting helps us detach from things of the
world. Not because earthly things are bad or evil
but because they are good. We learn compassion as fasting helps us identify with the poorest
in the world in order to feel their hunger, their
ache, and their longing for sustenance. We learn
humility as we battle the controlling influences in
our lives. Fasting forces us to stand face-to-face with our human
weaknesses. We exercise self-control. A stronger self-control in
our lives allows us to overcome impatience, anger, indulgence,
and many other vices. We learn discipline. Fasting develops
spiritual discipline designed to tame the body so we can concentrate on heavenly things. By controlling the passions of our body,
we free our souls for prayer.

Lent Liturgy Changes
During Lent, we make some liturgical changes in our Mass. We
use the short penitential rite (form
B), the Apostle's Creed, and we
chant the "Holy, Holy, Holy" and
the "Lamb of God" in Latin. Here
are the "Sanctus" & "Agnus Dei"
in Latin:
Sanctus
Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus
Dominus Deus Sabaoth
Pleni sunt caeli
et terra Gloria tua
Hosanna in excelsis
Benedictus qui venit in
nominee Domini
Hosanna in excelsis.
Agnus Dei
Agnus Dei qui tolis peccata
mundi: Miserere nobis
Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata
mundi: Miserere nobis
Agnus dei qui tollis peccata
mundi: Dona nobis pacem.
