September 28th in the 475 lobby. Take this opportunity to purchase items for the holidays, birthdays or a special gift for yourself. To read more about Books Are Fun, click on their logo.

PARKING DECK RESTORATION
Major restoration work is underway on the parking structures at 475 Half Day Road
and 485 Half Day Road. Begun in the second week of August, the replacement of all
sealants and concrete waterproofing at the 475 parking deck is slated for completion
by September 22nd. The more extensive work on the 485 parking structure will involve
concrete repairs as well as sealant replacement and water proofing. Begun the second week in September, the project is slated for completion by the end of October. Both projects required the closing of large sections of the parking structures in
order to prevent any damage to vehicles. We appreciate the patience of the employees and visitors at both buildings. The improved conditions on the lower levels of
the parking structure will be worth the inconvenience.
REVOLVING DOORS
Slamming doors and cold drafts have plagued and chilled office buildings for centuries. It
wasn’t until August 7, 1888, that an inventor named Theophilus Van Kannel patented his
solution to this problem.
The Van Kannel Revolving Door, as it was originally named, has been implemented worldwide in a variety of settings because it eliminated slamming doors and cold drafts of air
through office lobbies and buildings. The revolving door, which predates mechanical cooling, was actually
credited with saving lives due to its ability to keep cold air out of buildings.
Van Kannel received the Franklin Institute of Philadelphia’s “John Scott Legacy Medal” that he was awarded in
1889 for his outstanding contribution to society.
Descendants of Van Kannel’s original design can be found at the entrances to the 475 and 485 Half Day Road
buildings. Whenever possible, please try to use the revolving doors instead of the conventional push / pull
doors. They prevent slamming doors and outside air drafts, which conserves energy and helps keep the first
floor lobbies comfortable.

USE CAUTION!
The arrival of fall marks the beginning of a new football season, a new holiday
season, and the start of another deer season. The migrating and mating season
for deer across the United States usually runs from October through December a season that proves deadly for many deer and motorists alike every year.

To avoid vehicle-deer collisions, drivers should:
 Remain alert for posted deer crossing signs. These signs are placed in known active deer crossing areas.
 Be aware that deer are most active during the early evening.
 Use high-beam headlamps as much as possible to illuminate the sides of the road where deer
can linger.
 Be aware that deer often move in a herd - if you see one deer, there is a good chance several
more are just a few yards behind.
 If a collision with a deer seems inevitable, it may be best not to swerve. The risk of personal injury
is greatly increased by swerving which can place you in the path of oncoming vehicles or may
cause you to lose control of your vehicle.

It was another successful soccer season here at Millbrook. Despite the heat this summer, employees (male and female) from Plexus, Eagle Test Systems, and other companies in the Millbrook Business Center, have been getting together Friday evenings after work for a friendly soccer match. It
has been a great time to relieve some stress before the start of the weekend, meet new people, and
get some exercise. Games continued throughout the summer and fall season. The new season will
start up again in the Spring. No special equipment and/or gear is required to play. All skill levels are
welcomed. If you are interested in joining them for the next upcoming season, contact helya.azari@
teradyne.com or warren.huey@plexus.com for more information.

FALL BACK
Fall is quickly approaching and so
is Daylight Saving
Time. On Sunday,
November 4th, clocks are
moved back one hour from 2am
DST to 1am standard time.
The reason for daylight savings,
like all daylight savings changes,
is to increase the period of light
during the afternoon while decreasing the hours of daylight in
the mornings.
