Operation
Construction
The air film carousel is used for the manufacture of umbilicals.
The upper rotating part is of steel construction
and carries the cable.
During manufacture, the cable is spooled
through various phases of production from one
carousel to another. In production about 15
different spoolings can take place.
The lower part is fitted with air flotation systems, floating against the underside of the
upper part. The two synchronised drive units
rotate the carousel with a steplessly adjustable
speed that is adaptable to production.

Advantages
Result
To start production of umbilicals.
Experience had shown that
the maintenance costs of
mechanical carousels were
high, and therefore the customer wanted to try alternatives.
An important factor was also
to meet tight delivery
schedules, necessitating a
more efficient system. The
customer chose Solving Air
Flotation!
Thanks to air film technology the height of the carousel could be reduced. This
was important, since the
height inside the production
hall was limited.
No investment in an overhead crane was required,
since the carousel also is
movable on air bearings.
By using air bearings the
floor loading was reduced,
resulting in large savings in
building costs.
