FOODEX JAPAN is the largest food and beverage trade show in Asia, and will take place this year for the 34th time. This year’s exhibition has been attended by many wonderful exhibitors in the USA Pavilion, which is a showcase for the USA food market. The new design of the USA Pavilion will reflect the hope of a fresh outlook for change. Based on the great reputation that this pavilion has built up over many years, it has become an excellent forum for exchanges between exhibitors and approximately 90,000 buyers. The stage has been set for many business opportunities and chances to stimulate buyers’ interest. I encourage you to take this opportunity to visit the USA Pavilion in Hall 1. The USA Pavilion Directory contains a list of exhibitors, their contact details and information about the products. As we prepare to showcase our products at Asia’s largest food trade show, I would like to express our deep appreciation for the excellent food and agricultural markets we enjoy in Japan and in the rest of Asia. We are proud to celebrate our 34th year exhibiting at FOODEX. During this time, Japan has been an extremely important market for U.S. food products and FOODEX has been an essential showcase for many of these products. The USA Pavilion will again be one of the largest at the show, featuring several new exhibitors and products. As a world leader in agriculture and Japan’s largest supplier of food and agricultural imports, we are pleased to feature an exceptional array of innovative, safe, and healthy products at the USA Pavilion. We hope you find the show rewarding and enjoyable. Please be sure to visit our pavilion, where our exhibitors and staff look forward to greeting you and assisting your business. Sincerely, James P. By Jim Prevor President/Editor-in-chief AMERICAN FOOD AND AG EXPORTER At this moment in history, with financial structures in disarray, recession or worse foreboding and the winds of protection whipping through the halls of power in capitals around the world, it is no small thing for a phalanx of United States exporters to travel the vastness of the Pacific Ocean to make a stand for trade and friendship at FOODEX JAPAN 2009. There is a temptation to think that the temperature of relations between great nations is best taken at official summits, where prime ministers and presidents, emperors and kings pronounce relations to be friendly or hostile, improving or slipping downward. That governments matter is of little doubt, but the true state of relations between peoples is best judged not by what leaders say but by what people do. It is in trading and exchange, in tourism and travel, in cultural sharing and translation where one finds the activities that build millions of tiny • 6 • • • • • • USA Pavilion Directory at FOODEX JAPAN 2009 bridges of understanding and friendship. Enough bridges built can tie two countries like brothers. Even when the politicians may battle, the relationship is almost unbreakable. The phrase “special relationship” is often used to describe the connection between the United Kingdom and the United States, but in many ways, that relationship is a form of nostalgia. It is with Japan that America finds its most special connection. Japan and America constitute the two great free enterprise economies of the world, exchanging each year over $100 billion worth of goods and services. It is hard to think of two countries that share closer interests. The food and beverage industry has played no little role in the connection between Japan and the United States. Japan is the largest overseas market for U.S. food and agricultural exports, at over $11 billion dollars — important business for the United States and an important source of food for an import-dependent Japan. The USA Pavilion at FOODEX, endorsed by the United States Department of Agriculture, is over 100 companies strong. These companies are a source of vital sustenance for the people of Japan and conduits of friendship between neighbors across the Pacific. As politicians deal with reverberations of the world financial crisis, • • • • • • • they will depend crucially on the voices they hear from their countrymen as to the policies most likely to induce prosperity. At a trade show such as FOODEX, let us hope that the statesmen will see the poetry in the mundane acts of commerce that do take place at FOODEX: That they will hear the symphony of hand-shaking and bows being exchanged… That they will understand that in search of mutual benefit, the business people of Japan and the United States serve as Ambassadors of friendship, goodwill and understanding… That the pursuit of commerce and the conduct of capitalism is, by its nature, entangling and thus creates the preconditions for caring about one’s neighbor… In times of stress it is tempting to think one should pull back, rely on one’s devices, one’s own country and its products. But this is the path to ruin. One of the things that ties the United States and Japan is a fundamentally optimistic way of viewing the future. There are always setbacks, always disagreements, but in the end both nations approach the world with a certainty that we can make tomorrow better than today. The exhibitors from the United States have traveled to find ways that together we can build that brighter tomorrow. They stand in defense of the notion that trade enriches the world economically and culturally. They also open the American cornucopia to our close friends, the Japanese, and in the universal expression of friendship, say, “Let us share a meal together.” So this visit is now often a reunion for old friends as well as an invitation to new ones.
