Ball of fire gala
by Janine Adamczyk
On Saturday, November 9, 2013, the Polish Center was aglow in red as we held our Ball of Fire Gala fund
raiser. As you may know, we have begun a campaign to retire our mortgage and this year’s Gala was the
campaign kickoff. The Ball of Fire Gala was attended by 150 people. Everyone enjoyed delicious hors
d’oeuvres and dinner prepared by Jack Norman Catering. In addition, the event
featured a beautiful ice luge and an open bar compliments of Planners Financial
Group. Entertainment included the Grace Notes Trio performing during cocktail
hour and Matthew Byczynski’s melodious piano playing during dinner.
The silent and voice auctions featured a wide variety of items including
vacation packages, jewelry, sports memorabilia, and gift certificates for many
different goods and services.
It was a fabulous night which was enjoyed by all. It was also a financial success
for our organization and the Free & Clear campaign with a profit of over
$25,000!
Thank you to the Gala Committee for all of their hard work in coordinating
a wonderful evening. Thank
you to all the sponsors, auction
donors, and attendees for
making this a night to
remember!

Greetings,
2013 was another eventful year in the life of the Polish Heritage Alliance. It was encouraging to see so
many enthusiastic faces at the annual membership meeting last September. We extend
congratulations and a warm welcome to new board members Bernie Jendrzejczak, Nick Ignatowski,
Janet Protasiewicz, Mike Kaiser, and Steve Chybowski (Secretary). We thank our departing board
members Andy Wasielewski, Clark Wantoch, Joe Dudzik, Michael Krass and Fran Wasielewski for their
years of dedicated service.
Francis Vogel, our Executive Director, has moved
on to pursue other professional opportunities. We
thank him for his service and wish him well in his
new endeavors.
The Board and staff are carrying on in his absence,
and we have every reason to be optimistic about
the future of PHA.
As previously announced, Polish Fest 2013 was the
best-attended and most profitable in years. We
followed that up in November with a blazingly
successful Ball of Fire Gala (see page 1).
Throughout the year, the Cultural Committee has
exercised industrious creativity in presenting a rich
array of concerts, art exhibits, lectures, Polish
classes, folk art workshops and other programs
highlighting Poland’s cultural heritage.
A broad array of social events in 2013 supplied a
steady round of fun for all ages, ranging from the
Golf Outing to the Beer Tasting and Vodka
Tastings, and the Holiday Bazaar.
Our amazing Bingo volunteers turn out every
Wednesday for one of the PHA’s major fundraising activities.
2013 was also the year we kicked off our
mortgage-burning campaign, under the slogan
“Free and Clear in Our Fifteenth Year.” We have
already made significant progress towards our
goal of eliminating the Polish Center’s debt and
establishing a reserve fund for the future.
The Polish Heritage Alliance is dedicated to
promoting all aspects of Polish heritage and
culture, and the Polish Center is our home. If you
haven’t visited in awhile, please drop in for some
of our
upcoming
events or just
to say hello.

SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR DONORS
On Saturday, November 30th, the Polish Center celebrated Adam Mickiewicz (17981855), Poland's greatest national poet. His poetry (set to music by Ignacy
Paderewski and Grażyna Bacewicz) was beautifully
sung by Alicia York. The program also featured
music by Fryderyk Chopin, Aleksander
Tansman, Karol Szymanowski, Witold
Lutosławski and Tomasz Gapinski - expertly
performed by Charles Asch (cello), Tom Gapinski
(piano), James Gapinski (guitar); Alison O'Leary (Flute); Shannon
O'Leary (violin), and Alicia York (soprano).
It was an elegant, enjoyable evening with full attendance. CDs of the performance can
be ordered by calling the Polish Center.

The Polish Heritage alliance Needs You!
By Susan G. Mikoś
The Polish Heritage Alliance is a membership-based and
volunteer-driven nonprofit organization. We have professional
staff to help manage our day-day-operations and banquet
business, but we need YOUR involvement to make us successful
in our mission of promoting Polish culture and heritage.
There are many opportunities to get involved, from serving on
the Board of Directors to serving beer at Polish Fest. Committee
positions include Finance, Membership, Free & Clear Campaign,
Cultural Programs, Gardening, Facilities, Personnel, and various
special events or task forces.
Volunteer
We also need a host of volunteers to keep our Polish Center
Opportunities
activities running smoothly.
If you like to meet people and have some daytime hours free, we would love to have
you staff our front desk. We are always looking for people to help with special
projects like mailings and with various community events, such as fish fries, Pączki Day,
the golf outing, beer and vodka tastings, brunches, galas, etc.
If you have a particular skill, like communications, graphic design, or grantwriting, we
could definitely put your talents to good use!
Our weekly Bingo games provide an important revenue stream that helps keep the
Polish Center’s doors open. Our dedicated cadre of Bingo volunteers is in need of
reinforcements on Wednesday nights. If you would like to help out in a relaxed and
friendly environment, this could be for you!
The Polanki Library at the Polish Center is always looking for volunteers who love
learning and/or have an interest in family history.
For Polish Fest opportunities, see the Festival Director’s article on page 4 or check out
the new website at www.polishfest.org.
If interested, call us at 414-529-2140, send your name and phone # to the PHA at

Polish fest 2014 Closer Than You Think!
by Jane Riley Best, Festival Director
The snow flies, the days are short, yet sunshine and long summer nights are not just a far
off dream. In six months, the 33rd Annual Polish Fest kicks off the ethnic festival season at
Henry W. Maier Festival Park.
Polish Fest 2013 was a great success thanks to so many dedicated volunteers and
enthusiastic attendees. Building upon that momentum as a festival takes year round effort.
There is plenty going on behind the scenes to bring you the best entertainment, food
and cultural offerings. Vodka tastings, an inspiring Cultural Village, captivating dancers,
an outdoor Mass, memorable souvenirs, tantalizing food offerings, imported Tyskie...all

Thirteen and a half years ago, a dream came true when the Polish Center of
Wisconsin opened its doors. After years of meeting in rented spaces,
Milwaukee’s Polish community was able to build a home for itself in a secluded
area of Franklin.
Today, the Polish Center of Wisconsin provides gathering space for Polish
groups, presents concerts of Polish music, showcases Polish art and history,
and organizes events featuring Polish culture and products.
Milwaukee’s Polish community worked together to build the Polish Center.
Many contributions – large and small – made the dream a reality. Built in the
style of a Polish country manor house, the Polish Center is a fitting symbol of
Poland’s proud national heritage and a testimony to the achieve-ments of
Polish people in Wisconsin.
Visitors from other Polish communities, especially Chicago’s, admire our
beautiful Polish home. If we want the Polish Center to be here for our
children and grand-children, we must sustain the support that made it
possible in the first place.

recently installed handicapped-accessible doors; now, we
urgently need to re-pave the front walk, refresh the EIFS
(synthetic stucco) exterior, refinish the hardwood floors,
replace carpeting, and make major repairs to the heating
system.
With these needs in mind, the Board of Directors has
launched the “Free and Clear in our Fifteenth Year” fund
raising campaign to eliminate the remaining $309,000 of
mortgage debt and build a reserve fund to provide for
future maintenance costs.
You can be a part of this campaign. All donations are
appreciated, and will be gratefully acknowledged.
Contributions above $750 will receive permanent
recognition at the Polish Center. Larger donations will
enable us to reach our goal sooner and add to our
