The 2016 Scandinavian Festival
was again a huge event. It
took months of planning and
many volunteers on the day to
make things work. Cecilie
Meade did a fantastic job on
Facebook and a huge thankyou
goes to all our volunteers, in
particular Bente and Lars
Nielsen, who came up from
Gosford to help with preparations and run the kitchen on
the day. A long day and everybody had to go to work the
next day feeling a bit worn out!
Much less encouraging were
visits from Brisbane City
Council on the day (they closed
down two stalls in the street
completely and our smørrebrød
service temporarily for lack of
compliance) and the licensing

poppies on Fyn, meet old and new friends and try our ‘smørrebrød’
(Danish open-faced sandwich). Taste ‘rullepølse’ (spicy rolled pork),
smoked salmon, ‘leverpostej’, roast pork – or have a hot dog. The bar
offers Tuborg varieties direct from Denmark and is also proud to stock
SKOVLYST beers – the Danish club may still be the only place in Australia
to try Skovlyst. Not that we’re boasting. We even have FAXE Kondi. Of

Legegruppen mødes hver fredag i Heimdals lokaler fra 9.30 til kl 11.30.
Aldersgruppen er fra 0 til 5 år, søskende til yngre børn er selvfølgelig
velkommen i ferierne.
Vi starter altid med formiddagskaffe og hjemmebagte boller, efterfølgende
varierer aktiviteterne med fri leg, hoppeborg, tegning og sanglege mv. Vi skiftes
til at medbringe boller og tilbehør.
Vi betaler $2 hver gang per familie, medlemskab af Playgroup Queensland og
den danske klub Heimdal er en betingelse.
Nye medlemmer er meget velkomne til at komme og være med.

DANSK VINTAGE is pleased to introduce the Danish Retro chair collection
to Australia.
Danish Retro is a Danish company established in 2015 and is based on
owner/managing director Torben Ohlsen's passion for authentic vintage
Danish designer chairs. The company is committed to the preservation and
exposure of lesser known Danish 1940s and 50s chair designs and to
bringing recognition to their designers. Danish Retro's mission is to identify
each chair with help from the Danish public and media and to pay royalties to
either the designers or their surviving families. More importantly the aim is to
honour these Danish designers for their beautiful designs and to tell their
stories to the world.
Until a chair has been identified, it is given a product number with 'U' in front
indicating 'unknown designer', it will then be renamed after identification. The
first chairs, U3 and U4, have recently changed name to CFB 52 crediting
designer Chresten Findahl Brodersen's set of chairs from 1952 (see original
b/w photo). He lived 1920-1989.
Danish Retro has so far relaunched six strikingly beautiful designer chairs
from the golden era of Danish mid-century design. And more are coming! The
chairs are constructed with no expense spared using the same quality
cabinet maker's methods as the original examples. The armrests and legs are
made of European oak with a natural finish. Comfort and high quality
upholstery characterise these chairs.
Customers can choose from three price categories of Danish quality fabrics
from Kvadrat and Gabriel. Prices currently range from $1440 to $3540. Lead

The Christmas season will soon be upon us and what better way to celebrate than by
enjoying a Danish smorgasbord with family and friends – invite them along to a
delicious lunch at the Danish Club. There are many favourites on the menu including
pickled herring, roast beef, smoked salmon, fish wedges with remoulade, roast pork
with red cabbage, leverpostej, rullepølse and cheese. The bar is stocked with
Skovlyst and Tuborg and Carlsberg brews from Denmark and a variety of snaps.
Price: $40 for members and $45 for guests (children under 12 $20/$22.50).
All tickets must be booked and pre-paid by Tuesday 8 November 2016. Email Lone

Scandinavian Festival 11 September 2016
After a rainy Saturday, 11 September 2016 dawned with mostly blue skies and Austin
Street was soon ready for the 5th Scandinavian Festival. It was a marvellous sight
with lots of old and new stallholders setting up from early morning to be ready for the
crowds.
The entertainment program was put together by Kurt Christensen, our master of
entertainment, and he had again succeeded in getting a wide variety of Scandinavian
entertainers on board.
The Baltic Choir started the day with songs from the Baltic countries, followed by a
quick opening speech from Søren. The Heimdal Danish Folk Dancers presented
traditional dances from Denmark followed by Timo Jarvela and the Fiddle Group with
traditional and contemporary Finnish tunes. Then we heard the Scandinavian Singers
before Unni Kløvstad, the Ambassador for Norway, Grace Grace, the Minister for
Multicultural Affairs Queensland and Vicky Howard, our Brisbane City councillor,
officially welcomed the many visitors to the
festival.
KUPALEJA then entertained, followed by
Steinar Johansen on the accordion and
Finntune, the melodious Finnish all male
song group. The Heimdal Danish Folk
Dancers gave another presentation, before it
was time for Unni Kløvstad to draw the
winner of the fantastic first prize donated by
Emirates and 50 Degrees North. And the
happy winner, Annelie Sullivan, jumped up
from the front row and the prize was presented to her right there and then. The
Rhythm Society Dance Orchestra had in the meantime taken over the stage with their
wonderful swing music from the golden era of swing while the Corner Pocket Swing
dancers performed on the bitumen.
The busy market stalls offered a delicious selection of savoury and sweet treats from
two Danish bakers including flødeboller, the
Norwegian stall served their ever popular
waffles with brown goat’s cheese. Scandinaviyum presented their delicious smörgåstårtar, the Danish club again served their
hugely popular hot dogs. Add to this Italian
gelati, Norwegian pastries from the Norwegian
Student Association, Norwegian salmon with
mash, Finnish pullar and Karelian pies,
Swedish Goodies with lots of Swedish specialities to take home, what an amazing
choice.
Inside the Danish club house, Heimdal’s smørrebrødsteam worked hard to keep up
with the demand for smørrebrød - well done!
Our Skovlyst craft beer was popular in the bars which also served Somersby cider,
and Danish Tuborg beer.
There were many market stalls with interesting products of good quality including
Danish vintage furniture from dansk vintage, Jensen Opals, Hanne’s Christmas
decorations, Travel Managers, Emirates, 50 Degrees North, children’s clothing and
accessories, jewellery from Bud to Rose by Diddi, Muuri smoke oven, bicycles from
Reid Cycles, Swedish Goodies, Bricks4Kidz LEGO play centre, original silver jewellery
from Boda Silver all the way from Sweden, rainwear, Dirt by Earth, women’s wear
from Kaja Clothing, homewares from Nordic Designs, audio from Bang & Olufsen, Poul
Pava homewares from
AIDA – and much

Not surprisingly, the
Viking village again
attracted a huge crowd
and their displays were
a delight. The raffle
draw was scheduled
for 2:30 pm and
tickets sold briskly
throughout the day
right up to the very
last minute. The
generous donations enable us to raise the additional funding required to run the
festival.

big thank you to all members who supported the event by buying raffle tickets and
attending on the day.
The feedback we have received has been fantastic – everybody had a great day and
enjoyed themselves, and we would like to send a huge thanks to all the volunteers for
the day – without you, it would not have been possible.

Report from the AGM August 2016
Magnus Hindsberger, long serving committee member and former President, and Pat
Christensen, Treasurer - retired. Both have agreed to help with the change over.
New committee for 2016 –2017
Merete Kern – President and Pia Blak – Committee member, are continuing.
Asbjorn Hansen – is the new treasurer.
The Danish Church in Brisbane has had a successful year. We had a successful
Christmas Market in November, which was well attended and supported by loyal
volunteers.
The day after the Christmas Bazaar we set up a stall at Heimdal’s Christmas market
where we had a successful day selling Danish goods and craft items left over from our
fete. Thank you to the Danish club for inviting us along.
The major contributions to the church for the year were the Christmas Bazaar 2015
along with membership fees and donations.
The Danish Club Heimdal kindly donated an amount of $1,000 to the Danish Church in
Brisbane. Thank you Heimdal!
The Christmas Service was festive with attendance by the Scandinavian Choir,
followed by coffee and cake for all.
Three young people were confirmed on 20th March at a well attended church service.
Our yearly Christmas Bazaar is our main source of revenue for the year. A big thank
you to the many willing helpers who helped make it happen. Without this support the
Fete and other church activities would not be possible.
We look forward to a successful year ahead and hope that we will have the same
support again this year.
Best wishes to the new and continuing committee members who will help ensure that
the Danish Church in Brisbane has a healthy future.

SBS lukker dansk radioprogram. Den danske stemme på SBS
Radio har sagt sit sidste ord
SBS Radio har drejet nøglen om for det danske program og afskediget
redaktionens tre medarbejdere, Mik Aidt, Lisbet Vester Fraser og Vibeke
Sybrandt. Dermed nedlægges et samlingspunkt, som gennem 30 år har
formidlet nyheder om og for det dansktalende samfund i Australien. Det
sker samtidig med at SBS nu søger to nye medarbejdere til det
vietnamesiske program og tilfører nye ressourcer og medarbejdere til
SBS Radios lokalsamfunds-kontaktarbejde og online formidling.
Beslutningen om at lukke det danske program permanent har vakt
undren og vrede. De norske, svenske og finske programmer, som
sendes fra Sydney, hvor SBS ledelsen sidder, får lov at køre videre, så
hvorfor er det kun det danske program, som blev sendt fra SBS i
Melbourne, der skal rammes af sparekniven? SBS Radio’s leder Mandi
Wicks forklarer i et interview på hjemmesiden, at lukningen sker som
en del af en større omstrukturering, som i løbet af det næste år vil blive
gennemført i henhold til resultaterne af den nye Census, den australske
folketælling.
Godt 100 herboende danskere har deltaget i en meningsmåling på
www.da.surveymonkey.com – 93% svarede, at de ønskede at
programmet skulle fortsætte.
Programmets redaktør gennem det seneste halvandet år, Mik Aidt,
efterlyser ligesom mange af programmets lyttere en mere klar
udmelding fra SBS omkring, hvorfor man prioriterer som man gør – og
han siger, han er skuffet over at SBS vælger helt at nedlægge
redaktionen: “Hvis det, som det her drejer sig om, er et spørgsmål om
prioriteringer i forhold til antallet af lyttere og kernelyttergruppens
sprogfærdigheder, så kunne man sagtens have valgt at lade det danske
program fortsætte blot på et mindre ambitiøst niveau med mere fokus
på de nye digitale muligheder for effektiv og målgruppefokuseret
nyhedsformidling,” siger han til Den Danske Kirke.
Mik Aidt fortæller, at han nu forbereder at starte en dansk podcast og
annoncefinansieret nyhedstjeneste, som tager tråden op, hvor SBS
