Mushroom
magic
It’s ah mee again!
A
fantastic treat for DS owners, this latest
outing of the ever-popular Mario series
evokes the heroic plumber’s earliest
adventures in the Mushroom Kingdom. It’s just you, your moustache and some totally classic old-skool platform gameplay.
As in the original, Mario gets a power boost
with old favourites like flame-giving fire flowers,
invulnerability-inducing starmen and, of
course, the mushrooms that turn him
into Super Mario. Then there are
some new power-ups like mega
mushrooms for super-sized growth
and mini mushrooms for water walking.
Always fiendish, surprising and imaginative, it’s
one of the best 2-D games to come our way in ages.
The main game is the star of the show but a great
bonus is a two-player Mario versus Luigi game.
This puts you up against a mate for a
rollocking star-collecting contest. Hit
them with fireballs or jump on their
head and they’ll drop their stars. Doh!

Good Lord! Or Dark Lord… It’s up to you!
A lready a smash hit on the PC, this now comes
to the Xbox 360. Elves, humans, orcs, dwarves,
goblins and trolls all await your orders in
this epic Tolkien RTS sequel. The first game
focused on the three films and their famous battles
such as Helm’s Deep. Battle for Midde-Earth 2
expands on that and lets you explore parts of MiddleEarth only mentioned in the book. As
either good guys or the bad guys, your
aim, though, is still simple: build up
a vast army of soldiers, archers and
cavalry and then save or enslave the
world! To strengthen your army you
can hire special units like Aragorn (hurray!) or the
Narzgul (yikes!).
War of the Ring-mode, where you try and
conquer all of Middle-Earth one province at a time, is
especially fun because you can arrange your factions
any way you like. Elves fighting humans, even goblins
fighting orcs – the choice is yours! Bigger and better
than the first game, and easier to learn, you’ll get
utterly engrossed in your battles for Middle-Earth.

This

onto
the PSP,
as the
system’s
first
turn-based military strategy
game. You take the role of a field

loads of visual and audio effects,
Field Commander lets you battle

intact and
with spot-on graphics. As agent
Gabe Logan, you’ll be taking on a
series of goon-infested missions,
avoiding detection if you can,
killing or disabling when you must.
You will be interrogating terrorists,
picking locks, deactivating mines
and generally running amok.
Chickens, guided missiles… What’s going on!
T his classic party game racer has always been
bonkers – and now it’s completely insane!
This time around, you take your tiny,
skiddy weapon-laden vehicles not just on
crazy courses about the house but on treacherous
tracks through the garden too. You can almost smell
the cat poo in the grass cuttings – when you’re not
veering wildly from hazards such as chickens bent on
pecking you up. Dangers back in the house include a
breakfast table littered with cereal spills, a blazing hot
cooker and an overflowing bath. And your rivals are
still trying to take you
out with rockets!
Miniature
madness!
If you’ve never played Micro Machines before,
here’s how it works. Each race is split up into intense
10-second chunks, during which you earn points both
for damaging rivals and for your current race position.
The winner of the whole contest is the car with the
most points, not necessarily the first to cross the line.
It is a format that has always made for amazingly
fast, edge-of-your-seat fun – and Micro Machines v4
continues the series’ in fine crackers form.

M
ario Pinball may have been a
disappointment but Metroid Prime
Pinball totally rocks. It both evokes the
Metroid Prime games beautifully and,
most importantly, it works as a pinball game really
well. The dual screens of the DS are used brilliantly,
representing the tables in their entirety. The result is a
game that’s as addictive as a real life table.
There are two single-player modes. In Score
Attack, you play a classic pinball game on a table of
your choice. Meanwhile, adding a healthy dollop of
bonkers sci-fi to the mix, Multi-Mission Mode lets
you play through six different pinball table regions,
each with them own Metroid themes, hidden artifacts,
weapon upgrades, battle bosses and mini-games. And
if that doesn’t get your balls rattling, simultaneous
eight-player games action is also on the menu. In your
battle for the top score, the idea is to hit targets that
release Metroid enemies on your opponents’ tables…
And with the DS Rumble Pak plugged in, you get loads
of rumbling and vibrating in response to the action on
the screens.

VIVA PINATA
BREEDING

T Let’s make (Pinata) babies!
he whole idea behind it seems absurdly
simple. A strange cross between Animal
Crossing, The Sims and Nintendogs, it’s
basically a species-rearing game. A ‘Pinata’
rearing game, to be precise. To get started, you get
yourself a plot of land, grow a few plants and trees
and hope a few of these Pinata creatures stroll by,
like what they see and decide to say. Taking care of
your burgeoning ecosystem, you then try and make
sure your Pinatas thrive, grow big and strong and
mate to create little Pinatas. Happy Pinatas even let
you play mini-games with them. But careful! Some
breeds (there are hundreds of ‘em) – called ‘Sours’
– are bad and eat others… It’s insanely deep – and
just the kind of crackers game the Xbox 360
has needed for ages.
Viva Pinata also utilises the Xbox
Live service really well. You can visit
other people’s gardens and trade goods
or Pinatas. Your Pinatas will carry a tag on
them so if you plan to send a friend a Sour
Pinata, it can be tracked back to you!

Hey good-looking!
I f it ain’t broke, don’t fix it? Tell that to Nintendo!
So far, the N64 is the only one of its consoles to
escape the makeover treatment, and now the
DS has emerged from the labs with a complete
re-style as well. And in terms of both its looks and its
technology, the DS Lite is so much of an improvement
over the ‘mark one’ that it’s hard not to advise you
to put your hands in your pockets again even if you
adore your trusty original.
The spanking new model still has that classic
screen-saving clamshell design, but it’s much slimmer
and sexier than its predecessor. It’s 39% smaller and
21% lighter, to be exact – making this truly pocket-
sized. And despite its petite size, you still won’t
need to squint to see the screen, which remains the
same size. The DS Lite also sports revamped screen
brightness controls which lets you pump up the
luminescence to PSP-beating levels. In short, just as
you can be sure that you’ll be playing a raft of great
new games on your DS Lite (like the wonderful New
Super Mario Bros, see P5), you can also be sure that
you’ll certainly be turning heads. What a looker!

The world’s gone games console mad! Not only do we have the
amazing Xbox 360 to play on already – now we have Sony’s PS3
and Nintendo’s Wii on the horizon too. We give you the low-down.
PS3 your mind...
I
f you want a console with mega-sized bells on it, this is it. The PS3
is quite simply humongously powerful – 250-times more powerful
than the PS2 to be exact. According to the BBC, if the PS3 existed
in 1998, it would have been the mightiest super-computer in the
world! Sony’s console also uses a new and very high-tech type of disc
to store information called Blu-ray. These discs hold up to 25Gb of
data, compared with the 4.7Gb
of the Xbox 360’s DVD. It means
developers can create games
which have astonishing clarity
and detail. When the PS3 is
hooked up to a swanky hi-def
TV, the graphics will blow your
pants off! The PS3 also has an
online service to rival the Xbox
360, letting you play games
online or just surf about. The
fact it can also download and
manage music and movies too
means it’s also a beast of a
home entertainment hub.

Wii will rock you…
I
t’s not called the Revolution anymore – but it’s still going to
revolutionise the way we play games. It’s all thanks to the Wii’s
fantastic remote controller. It may only look like a flash TV flicker,
but because of its super-accurate multi-directional motion sensor,
it is actually a totally brilliant games invention. You hold this wireless
‘wand’ and get to control all the action by pointing and waving it at
your TV. So instead of hitting a button to kill an enemy with a sword,
instead you will actually be making the
slashing movements with the controller…
Good, eh? You’ll be using it as a gun, as
a fishing rod, a lightsaber… in fact you
won’t believe all the things you will find
yourself doing with it! Neatly plugging
into a ‘nunchuk’ controller, which you
use to do stuff like moving about, the
Wii’s remote is all about letting gamers
play a completely new breed of totally
interactive games. The Wii will also let
you browse the web, download classic
Nintendo games, and it’ll let you play
any of your GameCube titles too!
Flex those specs!

Steel
This provides just the sort of
breathless fun the Wii system was
designed for. This is the amazing
shoot-’n’-slice ’em up that we
have all been waiting for. Red Steel
sees you take on Tokyo’s underworld
single-handed. Your Wii remote comes into its
own acting as both a gun and a sword. One
moment you will be riddling around rooms
full of goons and the next you’ll be going
toe-to-toe with a boss character in a samuraistyle duel. Winning each duel gains their
respect and you also get to enlist their help to
complete your bloody, vengeful quest. If you
don’t kill them that is!
There will no shortage of stylish swords
available to help you cut your way through
the criminal ranks, and there’s an impressive
arsenal of firearms for longer-range slaughter.
Add to that bullet-riddling and limb-severing
slow-mo attacks and you’ll be kept busy
cleaning up Tokyo into the Wii hours…

The Yellow Avenger
VeggieTales:
LarryBoy and the
Bad Apple
Why not jump into the boots of LarryBoy, the
super-hero alter ego of VeggieTales’ Larry the
Cucumber? You’ll certainly have your work
cut out, mind. Cripes, Bumblyburg town has
been taken over by a spider-legged shevillain known as the Bad Apple, who’s wants
everyone to give into their sugar cravings. It’s
up to LarryBoy to restore common sense and
save everyone’s veggie bacon.
Luckily, for an oblong object with no
hands or feet, LarryBoy is surprisingly
resourceful. He can double jump, glide
with his cape, grab hold of things with
his plunger ears and perform a nifty
spin attack, too. He is also armed
with a magic spritzer bottle that
somehow makes energy-giving
mushrooms grow! This is a
funny and simple game
to pick up and play. We
reckon this will keep you
happy as Larry.

He’s square, he’s yellow, he lives in a
pineapple on the bottom of the sea – and
he’s making his PSP debut! Yes, everyone’s

to the handheld with this fantastic sidescrolling platformer that sees SpongeBob
take on the dastardly Dirty Bubble and his
legions of evil-doers.

Water Ball, Raging Whirlwind, Summon Sea

Full of the TV series’ silly humour, we
reckon Yellow Avenger is visually fab. The

look just like their Nickelodeon counterparts.
Alex Rider:
Stormbreaker
It sounds like some sort of snowboarding
game, doesn’t it. But no! This is so much
cooler than that. This is all about a boy, your
average everyday teenager – except that he’s
also literature’s youngest spy…
As told in the movie based on the series of
books by Anthony Horowitz, already orphaned
in a mysterious plane crash, the 14-year-old
Alex Rider discovers his uncle murdered in
circumstances that can only be described as
highly dubious. Showing a knack for sleuthing
that he never knew he had, young Alex sets
out to discover what’s happened to his uncle.
And hey presto – he soon finds himself
recruited by UK intelligence (his uncle was
already on the MI6 pay roll, it turns out). From
then on, it’s the jet set life for young Alex,
who’s suddenly allowed to shoot people and
use wicked gadgets. Join in the fun and get
fully immersed in Alex’s various adventures.
Everything from gun fighting, martial arts,
parachuting, scuba diving, racing and a
number of gizmo-based mini-games are all on
the agenda…

Sony is inviting us to rock out with this, the

Quick Q&A
Q
A
Q
A
Q
A
What was your first console?
My first ever console was the
Commodore 64.
What is your favourite game?
That has to be World of Warcraft.
What do you like about it so much?
The “never-ending” story element.
Blizzard always bring out new levels and
characters to keep the game exciting and
players interested.
Q
A
Q
A
What consoles do you play?
At the moment, I mainly play on the
PSP, DS and Xbox 360.
What has been your strangest
incident/request in the store?
I’ve only just opened CHIPS Ormskirk
so haven’t had any yet. I am sure I will!
Q
A
Why did you open a CHIPS store?
Games are my passion but I always
shied away from opening my own games
store because I thought it would be too
difficult without support. However, I was
on the Internet and came across CHIPS,
the only games chain in the UK to offer
franchises and started to investigate.
Q
A
Who will be helping out?
My dad and I are the joint franchisees
and my brother Andrew and sister Caroline
will be helping out behind the counter.
Meanwhile, my mum Susan and fiancée
Jennie will also give me support – but
more behind the scenes.
Q
A
Why did you chose Ormskirk?
I was a student myself in Ormskirk and
had lived in the town before that, so I just
know it will be a great success – not only
with the under-graduates but with the rest
of the town’s residents as well.

first-person shooter, its gameplay is hardly
innovative. But it more than makes up for that
with amazing graphics, a spooky soundtrack and
a bunch of truly terrifying monsters. The game
begins after a massive demonic invasion has
overwhelmed a Mars research facility. As one
of only a few survivors, it’s up to you to take on
the infernal horde. An arsenal of blooming great

cattle rustlers, corrupt lawmen, murderous
preachers, renegade army psychopaths,
merciless outlaws and evil tycoons in this
rousing action-adventure that plays like Grand
Theft Auto in the Wild West. Swapping a car for a
trusty steed and an Uzi for a good ol’ fashioned
six shooter, you’ll play young tyke Colton seeking
revenge after your papa is brutally gunned down.
The horse-riding is great fun and the very bloody
gun fighting – which lets you target individual
body parts – is very well done indeed. Are you

➔ This top-notch sci-fi shooter carries on
from the ending of Quake II and once again
chronicles the battle between humanity and the
Strogg (cyborb aliens that are a bit like the Borg
from Star Trek). In a bid to stop the body-part
stealing fiends for good, humanity decides to
invade the Strogg homeworld. It’s a task which
becomes complicated when you’re captured
by the Strogg to be assimilated. The process
and try and guide them through the trials of
life. But everything else has been expanded
and improved upon in this great sequel.
For starters, the graphics engine has been
completely overhauled. Your Sims now all have
facial expressions and their world looks more
lifelike than ever. They also now age, have
children and grandchildren and can be assigned
“Aspirations” for their life. These aspirations
can be anything from a career to marrying that
someone your Sim has fallen head-over-heels
for. (Even a Sim can be a fool for love, it seems.)
A variety of “Fears” on the other hand – such
as loosing their hair – can ruin your Sim’s
happiness. Can you keep your Sim stress-free
enough to keep theirs? If you've got a console
version of Sims 2, see P26 for our simply
marvelous tips. ■

➔ A fast-moving action-adventure with
lots of exploration, even more fighting (hurrah!)
and a little bit of puzzle-solving, this is a much
better Shrek game than the first one. This
time round, you get to manage a team of four
fantastic heroes – all with their own skills.
Shrek’s ogre-style brute strength is handy when
it comes to lifting heavy objects, Donkey’s swift
burro kick opens doors and locked gates and
Princess Fiona’s ability to slow time helps beat
up the hordes of bad guys a whole lot more
effectively. Shrek, Fiona and Donkey are still the
stars of the show, of course, but this time round
you also get to play Gingerbread Man, Lil’ Red,
Puss in Boots and The Big Bad Wolf. Shrek 2’s
great multiplayer mode, meanwhile, allows up to
three more people to join in at anytime without
stopping gameplay. “Hero Time”, which are
special mini-quests which feature one character
at a time, add to all the fun. The Shrek 2 movie
was great and we reckon if you loved that, you’ll
love this too. Do you dare take on the terrors of
the dreaded Darven Mines? ■

David Colls, manager of CHIPS Darlington, began his career with CHIPS
way back in October 1996. Starting on a youth training scheme at
CHIPS Redcar, David quickly worked his way up and became manager
at just 19 years old. Since 2004, he has settled at the Darlington store
and is now the manager there.
Quick Q&A
Q
A
What was your first console?
The first console I ever owned was
the Sega Megadrive. But the first machine
I owned which played games was the
Amstrad CPC6128.
Q
A
What is your all-time favourite
game?
All time favourite game? I think I
would have to say Mario Kart on the
Nintendo DS.
Q
A
What do you like about it so much?
It is just such an addictive game to
play. The one-player game has plenty for
you to do. The Time Trials feature is one
of the major things that stands out as it
allows you to exchange your times with
all your mates. But, in addition to this, it is
the great multi-player aspect that is just
so very addictive. You just cannot beat the
feeling of hitting a friend with a shell in the
last corner and stealing their victory away
from them.
Q
A
What consoles do you play?
I own all the major formats that are
available. But I also have a fairly big
collection of older machines, including
Sega Megadrive, Mega CD, Master System,
Saturn, Dreamcast. Nintendo 64, SNES,
NES, Gameboy and the NeoGeo Pocket
Color, among others.
Q
A
What is the strangest incident or
request you have had?
I have had all sorts of random people
coming into the store. We have even had
old people asking if we sharpen scissors
or repair blankets! Also we have people
ringing up and asking if we are the
department at the council that deals with
housing. Or if we pick up and dispose of
fridges? I have even had someone recently
asking if there was a certain type of adult
entertainment nearby.

HINTS AND TIPS
Jon Hare, the daddy of Sensible Soccer, gives you
all the inside information you need to become a winner at this
footy favourite, from scoring goals to defence and tactics.
Scoring Goals
pulling back on the stick at the same time as you curl the ball into the
The secret of scoring is to be very accurate where you are aiming
before you kick the ball. Other football games are more forgiving, but
in this game, it is down to you pointing the player’s arrow in the right
direction and getting the timing, power and aftertouch of the shot just
right. There are many ways to score, here are a few to get you started:
penalty area. This is all done by feel alone. Then, whilst the ball is in
the air, wait until it is near one of your men in the box and aim towards
the net and press the kick button, then watch your man throw himself
at the ball and hopefully head it straight into the back of the net.
The powered curler
The secret of scoring from freekicks is to hit the ball softly enough that
you can get it over the wall and dip it back down again before it goes
over the cross bar. Practise makes perfect with this skill and dipping
is one of the most difficult skills in the game. Remember to push the
stick forwards to dip the ball the moment you have pulled back to loft
it, try adding a bit of curl too to really trick the goalkeeper.
Run a man down to the edge of the D, aim just off-centre of the goal
and then, holding the kick button down to power the shot, curl the ball
away from the keeper and into the corner of the net.
The near post tap in
Get a man to run diagonally into the penalty area with the ball and as
the keeper comes out, power the ball just inside the near post.
The far post slide
The dangerous freekick
Ball Control & Aftertouch
Get a man to the edge of the penalty area and pass the ball across the
goal towards where another player is running in. As the ball passes in
front of him, press the kick button to slide him towards the ball and
push it into the back of the net.
The secret to becoming a top grade Sensible Soccer player is to
learn how to master the all important art of aftertouch. What should
be remembered is that aftertouch is analogue and it is all about feel.
Also, it should be remembered that it is used throughout the game
for clearing the ball, crossing and playing through balls, as well as for
shooting.
The open play header/volley
Curling the ball
Run a man down the wing and cut him in field so that he is pointing
at about 45 degrees into the pitch, then play a lofted cross across the
pitch and curl it hard in field so that by the time it reaches the goal
area it is travelling across the face of the goal. While the cross is in the
air, this is the time to run another player into the goal area and press
the kick button to hurl him towards the ball and make him head or
volley it into the net.
The long shot
Not as easy as some of the older versions of Sensible Soccer, but it
is still possible against the weaker goalkeepers to launch a very long
high shot from just past the centre circle and manage to dip it and curl
it just under the bar and into the net.
The corner
The easiest way to score directly from a corner is to aim the ball at
about 30 degrees away from the goal line and then add a bit of loft by
28
SUMMER 06
Get the feel for how much curl you get for different lengths by how
long you push the stick to the side directly after kicking, sometimes
you will want maximum curl but at other times you will only want very
little curl to get the ball exactly where you want it.
Clearing the ball
The basic loft shot is essential in defence if you want to clear your
lines quickly. A quick yank back on the stick after a fully powered
shot normally does the trick.
The ball over the top
A more sophisticated approach to clearing the ball is to play a
powered lofted clearance and then to dip it by pushing forward again
very quickly after lofting it, almost in a very fast rocking motion. If this
is played from the midfield and is aimed and timed right, it will cause
the ball to drop just in front of your strikers and allow them to run onto
the ball and maybe create a chance on goal.
hints and tips
The through ball
The sliding recovery
An effective way to produce a through ball is to kick the ball and
deliberately curl it into the path of another of your players. Played
right, this is an effective way to cut through the opposition’s defences.
The key element to winning a game of Sensi is the ability to dominate
the battle for the loose ball. If you see a ball running harmlessly out
of play, don’t give up on it but chase it down and slide one of your
players at it then, while he’s sliding, redirect the stick so that when he
gets to the ball, he will kick it into the path of one of his team mates.
The chip
My personal favourite, but it is very hard to pull off and is almost
impossible when sprinting. It involves letting go of the left stick
entirely just after the point when the kick button is pressed. This
causes the player in possession to kick the ball very softly up into the
air, so that it soon comes back down again. It is perfect for chipping
the keeper from the edge of the box if he is off his line.
The glancing shot or header
One skill that only more experienced players tend to use is to deflect
the ball at an acute angle as they are jumping to head the ball or
sliding to kick it. This is done by redirecting the left stick just after the
kick button is pressed and as the animation of the player going for the
ball is being played. This skill will make you more deadly in front of
goal and better at keeping possession when the ball breaks loose too.
Defence & Winning the ball
Like all good football games, in Sensible Soccer, possession is only
half of the fun. It is just as much fun to hassle and harry and tackle the
opposition into submission to win the ball back.
The sliding tackle
You have to be careful with sliding tackles in this game. Quite simply,
a sliding tackle from behind will nearly always result in a freekick and
very often in a card too. It is best to slide tackle players face on as you
are very unlikely to get penalised then. The slide tackle is not quite
as long as on the original Sensible Soccer and you have to make sure
that you time it right or else your player will miss the tackle entirely.
The running tackle
You will be more likely to dispossess the opposition by running into
him if you approach him head on. If you approach him from the side,
he will often hold you off, particularly if he is stronger than you.
Closing down a man
Remember the selection process is automatic. Just push the man you
want towards the ball and the AI should automatically select him as
your next current man. To close a man down quickly, you should use
the sprint button. Remember sprint is more effective for defenders as
it does not effect their ability to kick the ball as it does for attackers.
Moving the goalkeeper
The right stick moves the goalkeeper to come out or go back and to
cover his left or right post. Goalkeeper movement is particularly useful
for bringing the goalkeeper out when one-on-one with an opposition
striker, just watch out for the chip. If the goalkeeper is moved left or
right it will help him to save shots played that side of him, but will
put him at a disadvantage for shots played the other side, particularly
during penalties. The goalkeeper’s party piece is moving the walls at
dangerous freekicks, they automatically cover the vulnerable side of
the goal as the keeper moves from side to side between the posts.
Running clear
The only easy way to keep the ball once you have it is to sprint as fast
as you can away from the opposition, but be careful that you do not
inadvertently run the ball out of play or make it impossible for you to
get a shot away as the ball runs away from your feet. The best way to
use sprint is in a lot of short bursts in a mazy run and change direction
frequently as you pick your way through the opposition’s back line.
Passing
The key to passing is to learn to be accurate with where you are
aiming the arrow before you press the pass button. Although players
with greater passing skill have a wider margin for error, you’ll still
need to concentrate in order to play a decent pass. Passing is at its
best when several are strung together in quick succession, as the
opposition defence is shot to bits. Remember that a pass receiver
will play a first time shot when he gets the ball if the kick button is
pressed before he receives it.
Tactics
The tactics in Sensible Soccer are fairly simplistic but it is important
that the player uses all the tricks available to him if he is going to win.
Avoiding the offside trap
With the introduction of the offside law, special care has to be taken
by attacking teams not to overload their attack against a defence of
lesser numbers. A four-man attack line against a three-man defence
will usually incur many offsides and it is up to the attacking player to
acknowledge this and to change his formation accordingly or suffer
the frequent sight of the flag being raised against his players.
Using sprint and substitutes
Each player has his own individual sprint energy and when it has
run out, it is not easy to get back again. Do not waste sprint energy
chasing a totally lost ball. Having no sprint energy left is one of the
main reasons that a player might be substituted within a game. Also
using a substitute striker with full sprint energy against a defence with
little or no sprint energy left can be very effective and dangerous.
Picking a formation to suit your squad
Each squad in Sensi only has 16 men, so there are certain formations
that are much more natural for some squads to play. Players should
bear in mind the formations that they prefer before choosing the
custom team type that they want the team to be based on.
Learn the player types
There are 21 different player types in Sensible
Soccer 2006 and they are all very different from
each other. Take the time to read the manual
and learn the strengths of each one.

Dear CHIPS
Dear CHIPS
I would like to congratulate Nik and Don in
celebrating CHIPS’ 20th anniversary. In an
industry such as ours, there have been many
people come and go but it is great to see the
success and continued growth that CHIPS has
managed. Retail is tough at the best of times
but, as an independent company, CHIPS has
the advantage of being close to its customers
and can therefore react to their needs and
I am saving my money for when the Wii and
PS3 come out. But I can’t decide which one to
buy. The PS3 is expensive but my sister will
love the music downloads. But then the Wii
has those controllers that I really want. Help!

y the time we meet again, Autumn
will once again be with us. As
some famous poet once wrote,
Autumn is the “season of mists and

just an extremely flowery way of saying
we’re going to be spending a lot more
time snug indoors playing games.

Dear CHIPS
I’ve just been flicking through the anniversary
edition of CHIPS magazine and wanted to
congratulate you all on your longevity and
achievements over the last 20 years. I have
very fond memories of the times I’ve spent
with Don and Nik, going back almost to
1986 when I was working at Microdealer.
My most vivid memories are of a trip I made
to Middlesborough around 1993. Nik and I
appeared on local radio and found ourselves
conducting a phone-in having to justify
the prices of software (some things never
change!). Halcyon days, fondly remembered.
I wish you every best wishes for the 20 years
to come!
