Keep one step ahead with our extra n uggets of gaming informatio n! Sony PSP BIGGTEERR New Xbox 360 has a huge 120GB hard drive & BET W ith the two new kids, Wii and PS3, now comfortably ensconced on the block, Microsoft is releasing an Elite version of Xbox 360, resplendent in a shiny, matte black casing with natty metallic detailing. The Xbox 360 Elite features a 120GB detachable hard drive which is six times the size of a standard Xbox 360 and twice as large as the PlayStation 3. Its UK release date has yet to be announced but it’s already on the shelves in the United States. With PlayStation 3 currently retailing at £425 and flying off the shelves, the Elite package is a timely shot across Sony’s bows. Although the hard drive won’t change the way you play games, it has a huge effect on the amount of content you can download. And to complement the release, Microsoft has announced that a raft of new video content is coming to the Xbox Live Marketplace. Some of the most major content providers, including Paramount Pictures, Time Warner and the National Geographic Channel, are bringing new stuff to the Marketplace. Watch this space! Format: Xbox 360 Release date: TBC Publisher: Microsoft INCOMING! Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles will be stalking onto Wii late summer... price slash >> PSP Sony has cut the price of a PSP to £129.99, so if you haven’t grabbed one yet, now is your chance! Sony has announced a new Platinum range of PSP games that includes Ridge Racer 2 and Tekken. ● See P39 for more. INCOMING! God of War: Chains of Olympus coming soon to PSP… SPRING/summer 07 ® NEWS W I R E D ! ALONE IN THE DARK Driver: Parallel Lines >>PC, Wii There’s something nasty lurking in Central Park… The movie-inspired getaway driving thriller, with its mix of car chase missions and on-foot shootery, is careering onto the Wii and PC. The Wii version has Scarface-style Remote gunpointing combat. Wii version out June 22 and PC on June 29. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Vegas >>PS3, PSP D rawing on scarifying themes conjured up by the classic horror writer H P Lovecraft, 1992’s Alone in the Dark was the first 3D survival-horror game. Famed for creating an atmosphere of unease and fear, it went on to spawn four increasingly less successful sequels. Now New York’s Central Park is the stage for a cracking, spine-chilling next-gen revival. Paranormal investigator Edward Carnby, the protagonist from the original games, is back and he’s asking the question: ‘Why is such a large park in such a crowded city…?’ OO! Baaagh The answer is not only extremely sinister but also involves ancient evil and some horrifying lurking monsters… But what makes the new Alone in the Dark really interesting is its innovative episodic format. Inspired by TV drama shows, the game is split into 30-40 minute episodes, each one ending on a tense cliff-hanger. So get ready for bite-sized thrills with explosions, fiery infernos, car chases and daring escapes thrown into the mix with the monsters. Format: PC, PS3, Xbox 360 Release date: July 30 Publisher: Atari Mario Strikers: Charged Football Offering truly incredible-looking graphics, a new, easy-to-use interface, lots of cool military hardware and tons of multiplayer options, this high-stakes battle with terrorists in the casinos of Vegas has that wow-factor. Out now (still out on PC and Xbox 360). Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2 The beautiful game has just turned ugly… soccer ker! >> PC, PSP, PS3 Already out on Xbox 360, now PC, PSP and PS3 gamers can join in the fray with Mexican rebels on the US boarder. This tense singleplayer campaign, populated with intelligent enemies, is backed up with superb 16-player multiplayer action. Out June 22. shoc T his ‘Wii-make’ of the GameCube’s excellent Mario Smash Football is quite the most anarchic game of soccer you’re ever likely to be involved in. Choosing from 12 playable ‘captains’ from the Mario universe, you take to the field in stadiums wrought with danger for a festival of fouling, complete with special moves galore. Enjoy Mario Kart-style power-ups and ball-bursting ‘Mega Strikes’ that can be targeted and shot down using the Wii Remote. It’s football, but not as you know it. To move, you use the analogue stick on the Nunchuck. You tackle by flicking the Remote. There’s no sense of fair play. In fact, that’s thrown out the window along with the rulebook. In this game, fouled players just get special treats with which they avenge themselves, such as the Chain Chomp which chases players from the opposing team around the pitch. Pushing opponents off the pitch into an electrified fence adds further to the matchday mayhem. Great fun as a four-player party game (online as well), it’s the perfect antidote to today’s straight-laced football sims. Go on, push him into the fence! Format: Wii Release date: Out now Publisher: Nintendo INCOMING! Guitar Hero 3 publisher RedOctane has promised that the Wii version is going to involve motion-sensing madness… SPRING/SUMMER 07 SingStar Pop Hits NEWS W I R E D ! Colin McRae: DIRT >> Xbox 360, PS3, PC chart Have you got the X factor? topper L aaa…! Cough! It’s time to test your credentials as a pop god with the latest edition of this ever-fun karaoke fest. The likes of Snow Patrol, Lifehouse, My Chemical Romance, U2, Gorillaz and Lilly Allen all feature on Pop Hits’ 30-song, six-medley track list. As interactive as ever, it works the same way as the series always has: you sing and the game listens. Your voice is represented as a colour-coded bar running across the screen. If you’re singing in something approaching perfect harmony, you’ll be graded as ‘cool’ after you’ve finished your performance. Suck big time, though, and you’re looking at a rating of merely ‘okay’ or even ‘awful’… Pop Hits’ multiplayer modes are a really strong aspect to the game. We think they are definitely the most fun part! In one game, two players can either co-operate in a duet or challenge each other to a race to score the highest number of points. Team-based party games include both individual challenges and mini-games that require the frantic passing of the mic between team members. Ahem. Okay then, once more from the top… >> PSP, DS The fracas-loving worms are headed online, with daily updated stats and leaderboards on the Worms website. From WWII to outer space, your invertebrates will be unleashing crazy new weapons, such as the Bunker Buster and Buffalo of Lies… Out July. Diner Dash stomp! From the off, AC4 is fast and brutal, even when you’re using one of the six basic mechs that you must start with in single-player mode. Three different types of jet thrusters mean you can charge, leap and spin about like a metal ballet dancer before slamming your laser sword into an enemy mech’s head for a lightning-quick kill. As you earn points, you can throw multiple guns and swords onto either arm and add shields, new The world’s best rally game is revved up for its first next-gen outing. With better graphics, damage effects and scarily real handling, DIRT has you going sideways in hill climb events and rally cross. Pangya! Golf with Style >> Wii drop It’s EA’s new World War 2 ‘chute-’em-up’… zone W hile it hardly messes with the tried-andtrusted MoH formula (bags of atmosphere, lots accessibility and loads of Nazis to kill), Airborne should have enough that’s new to keep even the most war-weary veteran satisfied. This time, you experience the war as 82nd Airborne grunts Pathfinder Eddie La Pointe and Private Boyd Travers. Pathfinders are the guys who jump before the main force to designate drop zones with radio beacons. These missions are focused on stealth. When you have achieved your objective as Eddie, you will then go in again as Travers, guns blazing. Adding more in the way of tactics to proceedings, on each jump you can land anywhere you like in the battle area. Multiplayer-wise, online you can also parachute in over seven Deathmatch maps… Airborne will be hitting the Wii later in the year. Format: PC, PS3, Xbox 360 Release date: July 30 Publisher: EA Sticklers for tradition might splutter into their gins because of all the bare-chested lads and doe-eyed girls in short skirts, but we reckon this cartoony, power-up and effects-laden casual golfer is a must-have for the Wii. Swings your way June 8. Surf’s Up >> DS, GBA, GC, PC, PS2, PS3, PSP, Wii, Xbox 360 History Channel: Great Battles of Rome hannibal lecture A What we do in life… echoes in eternity! s this battle sim shows, history doesn’t have to be dull! Made in association with the History Channel, Great Battles of Rome lets you take part in more than 100 of the military campaigns that established the Roman Empire. During the game, you fight the Gauls, fight a civil war and take on Hannibal and his elephants. You can also fight from the Barbarian perspective and lead them in revolts, raiding expeditions and into key battles against the might of the Roman army. You can either select your own units and plan your own battle tactics or leave it all to the computer – that’s up to you. But if you do want to show-off your prowess as a General in the field, the PSP version has wi-fi head-to-head battles, while the PS2 has a splitscreen multiplayer mode. All this comes with 30 documentaries from the History Channel shedding light on the fascinating story of Rome and its wars. These are great for a little background information and even better for building the atmosphere and tension before you go to battle. Unleash hell! Format: PC, PS2, PSP Release date: TBC Publisher: Black Bean Games TBA Based on this summer’s flick, think of this as Tony Hawk’s with water. A solid sort of monster, eh? Developed by Starbreeze, the team behind the brilliant Escape from Butcher Bay, this brutally bonkers game is based on the series of comics by Top Cow. GTA 4 We’re gonna get lost in a city GRAND TH t! this big. It’s absolutely vas New kid on the block ‘Life is complicated. I killed people, smuggled people, sold people. Perhaps here, things will be different.’ These are the somewhat sorrowful words of the new lead protagonist, Niko Bellic, in the recently-released teaser trailer for Grand Theft Auto IV. So what do we know about him? Well, not a great deal, truth be known, but we can establish the facts and add a little colour around the edges. He’s a swarthy sort of cove, of Eastern European appearance, most likely hailing from the former Yugoslavia. His cousin, Roman, has apparently persuaded Niko to move to the United States to indulge himself in the American dream. We see Niko striding towards the city over what appears to be New York’s Brooklyn Bridge. Does the bad guy want to go straight? Will his cousin lure him into derring deeds of do? Yes, we can’t wait, either! The next-gen graphics look total ly amazing There’s a new kid in town. The kid’s called Niko, the town’s New York… R ockstar Games does things a little differently. On May 9, 2006, we were furnished with a firm release date for Grand Theft Auto IV for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It is, undoubtedly, the most eagerly-awaited title for the latest generation of super consoles. And so the date October 19, 2007 became etched in the minds of Grand Theft Auto fanatics across the globe. And then silence. No dripfeed of screen shots, press releases, character info or renders. No fanciful trailers. The wealth of GTA fan sites were left to stew and speculate… for more than 10 months! It wasn’t until the end of March that the first (and only) GTA trailer appeared. In 63 carefully-edited seconds of footage, we’re introduced to a new character, Niko Bellic (purportedly), a stubbly fellow of seemingly Eastern European bent, possibly a Croat or a Serb. We can but speculate (see ‘New kid on the block’ box, left). However, significantly, the trailer depicts a barrage of landmarks that will be familiar to residents of New York City… and fans of Friends, Seinfeld and Kojak. The saucy devils at Rockstar have only gone and re-created New York in all its glory, from the Statue of Liberty and Times Square to Manhattan Bridge and the Erie Lackawanna ferry terminal. INCOMING! GTA 4 will be released with a fully-fledged official strategy guide… INCOMING! GTA 4’s long missions will have multiple endings… 14 SPRING/SUMMER 07 Fi r st loo k ! GTA 4 HEFT AUTO We can’t get wait to get out for a drive. You won’t see us again! New blocks on the block From Liberty City to Vice City to San Andreas, the Grand Theft Auto series has taken us to a wealth of locations in the US, places which look familiar but are called by a different name. But where is Grand Theft Auto IV set? The visual clues from the trailer point clearly to New York, which more than likely provided the inspiration for Liberty City. However, this time around, developer Rockstar has teased us by throwing in a slew of historical landmarks, ones that clearly ape their New York counterparts. A quick list: Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Chrysler Building, Brooklyn Bridge, Flat Iron Building, Coney Island Cyclone, MetLife Building, Times Square… we could keep going. In the trailer, the word ‘Liberteen’ appears at the side of a rail track, just to keep us on our toes, presumably. It’s got to be New York! The processing power of both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 enables artists to produce visuals of cinematic beauty and if the promise of the trailer is realised – and we’ve no reason to believe why it should not be – then we’re in for a rare treat. Grand Theft Auto may be castigated (often rightly) for its violent nature but it’s always provided us with the opportunity to simply cruise the streets in an automobile and enjoy the scenery while listening to music. Heck, if the teaser trailer for GTA IV is anything to go by, it might be weeks before you even get around to tackling a mission. Why not simply take in the sights, enjoy a hotdog, watch the steam rise through the sidewalk vents, gaze out across the bay from the top of the Statue of Liberty, take in a movie… Ahem, anyway, it looks like there’ll be plenty to do without engaging in any of that nasty violence. So what of Niko Bellic? Is he a man desperate to escape from the war-torn former Yugoslavia, a man who has seen enough violence to last several lifetimes? It may be that Rockstar offers an entirely different career path for Niko, one that enables him to move up the ladder without resorting to poking folk in the eye. We can but hold our breath. Not until October, though. That’d be suicidal. One feature in the pipeline is downloadable episodic content. Rockstar is producing exclusive adventures for Xbox 360 players via Xbox Live. To date, two downloadable packs have been confirmed and it would be no major surprise if Rockstar were to do something similar for Sony. October 19, 2007, then. Hi-def GTA. You know you want it... July’s film is sure to be a cracker – and this action-adventure, the best in the series so far, will have your wands twitching wildly in anticipation. Order of the Phoenix follows the events of the book/film very closely, but its new ‘sandbox’ structure means that you can play as not just young Harry but also Dumbledore and Sirius Black and are free to discover your missions yourself by wandering the castle and grounds. This really brings the magic of the place alive and gives you plenty of opportunity to use your six exploration spells – and your seven combat spells. On the DS, you can stir potions and cast spells with the stylus, while the Wii’s use of the Remote as a wand is remarkably well done. Spells are cast with a mere flick of the wrist, thrusting the Remote forward propels an object away from you, while an upward motion with both the Remote and the Nunchuk makes an object levitate. You’ll stay one step ahead of the opposition and also get the most out of your game M any top games have strategy guides to go with them, but what are they for? Are strategy guides just for cheats? No, we don’t think so… Strategy guides are simply meant to help you get more out of today’s sometimes complex and often huge games. Take Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. This fabulous RPG is set in an absolutely vast world. Its quests and secrets are hidden, not only in great forests, towns cities and wildernesses, but also in countless dungeons and even other dimensions! Without a helpful strategy guide’s map, you’d need several lifetimes to discover it all yourself. Strategy guides also provide much more information about how to approach a game than manuals ever do. Take the Halo games. The beauty of Halo is that its various enemies are each vulnerable to a specific weapon. Fearsome Elite warriors, for example, don’t like Needler guns up ’em, while hulking armoured Hunters have orange-coloured weak spots round their waists and on the backs of their necks. But does the manual tell you this? No! Yet exploiting these enemy weaknesses is exactly what the gameplay of Halo is all about. It’s all in the guide. As well as containing useful maps and tactics for beating bosses and enemies, strategy guides will also have explanations for puzzles, checklists of collectible items and even walk-throughs to help you complete all the levels. Some guides do provide cheats, although this is less common in official guides. Last, but not least, a good strategy guide can also be a great souvenir of a game that you really love. Some guides, such as the World of Warcraft Atlas, are seriously-beautiful collectors items and make the perfect gift for any fan. Ask the knowledgeable staff at your local CHIPS store if there is a guide for a game you’re interested in. W ith its fiendish puzzles, deadly traps, precarious platforming and frantic creature battling (not to mention its climbing, shooting, acrobatics and swimming), 1996’s Tomb Raider did things no game had done before. And now, thanks largely to the success of last year’s brilliant Tomb Raider: Legend, we now have the chance to play it all over again as a new and thoroughly-improved game. In a nutshell, Anniversary takes all the best bits of the original game and goes one better with an enhanced version of Legend’s spanking game engine. Just as in the original game, Anniversary sends Lara off on an adventure to a series of ancient crypts, dim temples, hidden kingdoms and lost valleys in search of the secrets that will lead her to the fabled lost civilisation of Atlantis. This quest takes Lara from darkest Peru and Greece and then on to other long-forgotten places in the world… If you’ve played the classic, all this will sound familiar – but don’t get too complacent, Anniversary has some surprises in store for you. For starters, some sections are entirely new, while others you may think you remember are now much bigger – and a new sense of scale forces you to approach each challenge like it’s new. Retiring boss of Sony Computer Entertainment has said the company is already planning for the PS4, 5 – and 6… SPRING/summer 07 33 TIPS tips crackdown ›X360 Gangs have taken over Pacific City! But with our handy guide for superhero agents, you’ll soon be levelling (and cleaning) up… Listen Up! A trainee superhero cop, you’ve been bred for the job of saving Pacific City from three gangs led by 21 bosses. To do this, you’ll need to develop all your superhero skills – agility, driving, explosives, strength and firearms. You start off with a zero-star rating in each of these. Read on, though, and you’ll soon be a 4-star superhero. Lock and load! You’ve got some thugs to kill. Agility Agility is responsible for how quickly you can run and how far you can jump. Getting around the world of Crackdown gets easier as your agility increases, so it’s a good idea to get working on this skill straight away. There are a number of ways you can do this... >Collect agility orbs The easiest way to obtain agility is to collect these green orbs. The more icons floating above each orb, the more agility it has. In all, there are 500 orbs scattered throughout the game – all of them in high places such as cliffs and rooftops. The orbs in Shai-Gen need an agility of three or four to reach them, so look for your orbs first in Los Muertos, then Volk and then Shai-Gen. Always go back and check areas you have already visited. It could be that you didn’t have the agility previously to search all of the high places. >Snipe enemies When you snipe a foe from high up, you’ll not only boost your firearms or explosives experience but also add to your agility. It’s not a big bonus, but sniping is still a fun habit to get into. The Firefly rocket launcher is useful for this – as is a sniper rifle (though a sniper rifle won’t get much use in the rest of the game). 34 Spring/Summer 07 >Complete rooftop races >Complete road races Complete these races in less than the target time for a boost. These are actually quite tough, though, when your agility is lower than four. Deliberately get a rubbish time in a race and the next time you attempt it, all you have to do is beat that time… Points in the bag. Driving Explosives Driving in Crackdown is a great laugh – especially once you reach a driving skill rating of 4, when your vehicle will sprout mounted machine guns, be able to jump and climb and nitro boost like a rocket into oncoming cars. Here’s how you can improve your driving... Increase your explosives level and you boost both the blast radius and the damage you inflict with your rockets and grenade launchers. In fact, reach a 4star rating and you must be careful not to blow yourself or your co-op partner up... >Run people over! Run over gang members. It’s a decent enough hobby and it’s also the quickest way to boost your driving experience. >Perform stunts Early on, you don’t get much driving experience for stunts, but later on, double barrel rolls, double flips and the like give you more points than killing enemies. Land them on your tyres to make them count. The beach is a good area to perform stunts. >Jump through stunt markers There are over a dozen stunt markers in Crackdown. Jump through them all and you’ll earn driving experience. The tough ones are all about getting your truck ramp in just the right place. Keep trying. TIPS tips crackdown Firearms The greater your skill at firearms, the more accurate you’ll be and the more damage you’ll inflict with each hit. You’ll notice a significant improvement in the results of your shooting every time you level up. The 800-round Harrington rifle is an excellent weapon. >Get busy The more bangs you make, the more explosives experience you earn, so go to work. Stick close to supply points for ease of reloading, and lob grenades into groups of enemies as often as you can for maximum casualties. The heatseeking Firefly, which can lock onto moving targets, is fantastic. Strength How far you can lift and chuck objects and the amount of melee damage you can do is what this skill is all about. Level up enough and eventually you’ll be able to kill an enemy with a single kick, boot a car through the air and lift a tenton bus, chucking it at a mob of enemies. Strength is important as well because melee attacks are a good way of taking on bosses. Also, extra strength gives you extra health. In fact, every time you level up, you gain a health bar. >Pick on Los Muertos gang members In short, killing enemies with your bare hands is how you earn strength. Earn some easy strength by picking on Los Muertos gang members. They are mostly very weedy and will go down under a 2-star attack like a sack of spuds. After, you can move on to beating up the gangs in Volk and then Shai-Gen (for whom you really need to be at level 3). >Level up firearms and strength simultaneously Run towards an enemy shooting at them. If they are still alive when you reach them, you will automatically perform a melee attack. When the crim is dead, both your firearms and your strength skill will go up. >Throw stuff Tossing vehicles and objects at enemies will increase your strength. The heavier the stuff you chuck, the more your strength will increase (if you hit your target). Heave ho! >Melee vehicles This is a simple way to level up strength. Start hitting a vehicle before the enemies can get out. This can kill the occupants – easier than taking out a gang on foot. >Get on target You target a specific enemy or vehicle with the left trigger. Increase your accuracy further with the right trigger. An icon shows the part of the enemy you are targeting. >Reload quickly Press the LB (Left Bumper) to reload, then quickly press the X. Before it switches, the weapon will instantly reload. >Co-op If you have a co-op partner who is at a higher level than you, get them to dump a weapon and then take it to a supply point. Now always have it. spring/Summer 07 35 TIPS tips the codebank final fantasy xII tony hawk’s project 8 ›PS2 Obtain these character figurines for your Sky Pirate’s Den and prove to your friends that you excel at this RPG! Hardcore fans were still enjoying the games, but everyone else was becoming bored by a lack of ingenuity in design. But Legend developers Crystal took over from Core and rescued Lara from the doldrums with a quite beautiful game. Crystal did this by taking Lara, giving her a brand-new game engine and taking her back to her roots for a traditional mix of solo exploration and puzzle-solving. The fighting is more stylish than the earlier games. Lara can still flip, dive and roll while shooting, but now she’s also armed with other acrobatic moves. Her new grappling hook also makes things interesting. You can use it to pull things towards you, break things open, or even swing from the ceiling, Indiana Jones-style. Just like the RTS, you play as a Green Beret for the fast action, as a Sniper for the tactical shooting and as a Spy for the stealth and sabotage parts, switching between them on the fly. The Spy is a great laugh because his key weapon is disguise and his hobby is silently garrotting Nazi’s and making off with their uniforms. The Sniper, meanwhile (a cheeky cockney), can hold his breath for a slow-mo accuracy shot – and can even line up and take out two Nazis with a single shot. On other occasions there is nothing for it but to throw caution to the wind and take control of your Green Beret. He’s definitely the hardest of the three. He can skillfully wield two weapons at once and will quickly pile up those bodies when you’re in a tight corner. Strike Force hasn’t got the greatest AI but it’s still tremendous fun and it supports decent 16-player shenanigans online. And don’t forget that it is a total bargain at £9.99! spring/summer 07 39 ® chat chips chat What’s going on at your local CHIPS store? E U B L SixAxis ready to R M If there is one thing that is rubbish about the Sixaxis controller, it is its distinct lack of rumble. The force feedback of the PS2’s classic DualShock controller was dropped for the Sixaxis because of a long-running legal dispute with the owners of the 44 SPRING/summer 07 technology, a company called Immersion. Sony went on to lose a court battle with Immersion and had to fork out $82 million (£41 million) in royalties for the seven years that the DualShock had been on the market. Bad news for rumble fans, then. But better news is on the way, folks. Their legal fight at last over, Sony has now started talks with Immersion to get the motion-sensing Sixaxis rumbling like the old DualShock. Hurrah!
