“Investing In Your Staff (a.k.a. IBA2016)”
Recently while in a meeting with a
group of broadcast managers, the
topic of allowing the sellers of all the
stations represented in this particular
media market attend an upcoming
early afternoon industry-specific event
came up with one General Manager
heard saying, “Basically, we’re investing
in our sellers by allowing them to have
the day off (from their daily routine.)”
All of the other managers in the room
agreed with the plan, so I’m going to
run with that and suggest all of our IBA
members, regardless of market size,
invest in your sellers and managers by
allowing them to take June 15th “off”
(from their daily routine) to travel to
Champaign-Urbana for our all-day
IBA2016 “Training Camp.”
While station owners and managers
will hopefully plan to arrive the night
before (6/14) to attend our President’s
Reception, Chairman’s Dinner, and the
honoring of Ben Kiningham, our 2016
IBA/W. Russell Withers, Jr. Broadcast
Pioneer; Beth Neuhoff, our 2016 IBA/
Vincent T. Wasilewski Broadcaster of
the Year, and Dick Rakovan, on tape
to receive our rarely-given “Lifetime
Achievement
Award,”
(admission
to our Tuesday evening events is
included in our 2-day $149.00 pass, or
available via a $50 ala carte purchase)
and then be on hand bright and early
the following morning for our 7am
“Power Breakfast” with IBA attorney
Don Craven, FCC attorney Scott Flick,
IBA lobbyist Mike McClain, and NAB
Executive VPCommunications Dennis
Wharton with “Legislative, Legal, and
Regulatory” issues. Providing exclusive
owner/management
opportunities
Tuesday night through Wednesday
morning’s breakfast allows sellers to
delay their arrival into Champaign until
9am Wednesday morning June 15th,
when all-day separate tracks for TV
Sellers & Management, Radio Sellers
and Management, and all involved in
the expanding world of Digital-specific
Sellers and Management will learn from
the best as talented presenters and
panelists from our industry’s national
associations, including TVB, RAB, and
NAB, plus outstanding successful
practicing broadcasters, and broadcast/

IBA2016 “Training Camp,” investing in
your sellers with a day away from their

of this year’s finalists for “IBA Silver

been tapped to emcee this year’s Silver
Dome Awards, with the red hot country

Speaking of awards, congrats to
IBA-member WTMX-FM in Chicago,
honored at last month’s NABShow in
Las Vegas with NAB’s Crystal Heritage
Award, an award reserved for only
those stations who have won five NAB
Crystal Awards, which WTMX-FM did
in 2000, 2002, 2005, 2010, and 2016.
Congrats to IBA’s long-time Treasurer
and President/COO of Hubbard RadioDrew Horowitz, Hubbard Chicago
Market Manager John Gallagher, and
the entire Chicago Hubbard team! And,
while we on the subject of awards,
congrats to IBF Foundation member
and Cromwell Radio Group Founder
Bud Walters, Cromwell Radio Group’s
Mattoon market manager Luci Englum,
and the entire Cromwell Radio team
on the news that the Illinois Special
Olympics has named Cromwell’s
Mattoon stations as “Media Partner of
the Year” for the entire state of Illinois.
Well done folks! Well done!

Radio family,” said Hubbard Chicago Market Manager John Gallagher.
“Thanks to the outstanding work of our team, WTMX has been a Crystal finalist
a dozen times and we are honored to receive the NAB Crystal Heritage Award.”

Special Olympics Illinois: Cromwell Radio Group
By Vanessa L. Duncan,
East Central/Area 9 Director
Here in Special Olympics Illinois Area 9, you can’t turn on
your radio without listening to one of the three amazing
stations broadcasted by the Cromwell Radio Group of Mattoon. Whether you
enjoy Country Music on 101.3 WMCI, Classic Rock on 92.1 The Axe, or Today’s
Greatest Pop/Dance hits with your awesome DJ’s on 104.3 The Party, you are
tuned in to the amazing news stories, local sports, community events, and great
prize giveaways that the Cromwell Radio Group provides non-stop, twenty-four
hours a day. And yet, that is not all they do. As a matter of fact, the Cromwell Radio
Group, it’s employees and affiliates, strive to get involved in volunteering and
supporting charitable events and needs, as one of the Area’s best community
partners. In this way, Cromwell Radio Group has sponsored and championed
for Special Olympics Illinois Area 9, and it was an honor to announce that this
company has won the 2016 Special Olympics Illinois Statewide Outstanding
Media Sponsor.
The Special Olympics Illinois Outstanding Media Award recognizes an individual
or organization that has helped communicate and/or promote Special Olympics
Illinois and the achievements of its athletes, coaches and volunteers through
news features, social media and/or other presentations. It also looks for media
who take the extra step to raise funds to support the program. The award is
presented each year to the Outstanding Media winner at the State Summer
Games Awards Reception at the Red Bird Arena. This year, the reception will
be held on Friday, June 10th, and several of the Cromwell Radio Group radio
personalities will be in attendance to accept this award.
Cromwell Radio Group has been supporting Special Olympics Illinois Area 9
athletes for more than a decade for several Special Olympics events throughout
the year. For instance, radio hosts of the 101.3 Yawn Patrol, Bub McCullough
and Renee Fonner, have been the co-MC’s of the Special Olympics Family
Festival hosted by Consolidated Communications, Inc. on during the past 10
years, and their presence at SOFF is excitedly anticipated by the S.O. athletes
who are great fans of Bub and Renee. Similarly, 104.3 The Party DJ’s, like Kallie
Middleton, have volunteered yearly to act as the Master of Ceremonies at the
Polar Plunge at Lake Sara in Effingham and the Post-Plunge Party. In addition, to
being the MC’s for the Plunge event, 104.3 The Party has had a team of plungers
participate in the Polar Plunge to benefit Special Olympics Area 9 athletes for
the past six years. This year they were able to raise over $5,000 for the cause
and fans of the 104.3 Cast are able to view their Polar Plunge video at http://
www.1043theparty.com/2016/03/08/polar-plunge-2016/.
The Cromwell Radio Group has also been consistently supportive and generous
at the Lake Sara Dam Run to benefit Special Olympics Area 9 and the annual
Taste of Something Special. During these two fundraisers, Cromwell Radio
Group has provided remote broadcasting support, radio marketing, and a call
to action from the listeners. And of course, all three of the Cromwell’s popular
stations provide countless public service announcements about Special
Olympics Area 9 competitions they provide throughout the year only helps to
raise awareness and spread the positive news about the benefits of Special
Olympics Illinois sports. Undoubtedly, the Cromwell Radio Group of Mattoon
deserves the recognition of Outstanding Media Support for Special Olympics
Illinois and much more, as it truly is a company that cares about its community.

2016 Silver Dome Awards
Congratulations to All Silver Dome Finalists!
It’s All About You - A New Format for this year’s award program!
Big changes are coming to the Silver Dome Awards presentation to allow for a longer celebration of each finalist and the winning
entry. A segment of each finalist will be featured as each finalist entry is introduced to the audience. A longer segment of the winning
entry will be played upon the announcement of the winner. Each winner will proceed to the front of the room to accept their award
and pause for a picture. Gone is the staged photograph, replaced with a backdrop and the opportunity for you to have your station take
the photo, post immediately on Facebook, Tweet it, Instagram, or whatever media you choose. It’s an awards program, all about you!
Stations of the Year will be announced throughout the awards program and are no longer saved until the end of the night.
Plan now to attend the Silver Dome Awards Banquet on June 15th. Reception begins at 6pm with dinner served at 7pm. The award
presentation will get underway at 8pm. Tickets are $50 for the Silver Dome Banquet and are included with the One-Day ($99) and
Two-Day Passes ($149).
BMI Sweet Ending Featuring
LOCASH!
LOCASH, fresh off two
chart topping hits “I Know
Somebody” and “I Love This
Life” will be the topping off
the BMI sponsored dessert as
a sweet ending to the Silver
Dome Dinner.
Recently signing with Reviver
Records, the duo is joining
forces with some of the biggest
names on the Country Music
business landscape. Formerly
the LoCash Cowboys, the new
name brings an underlying current of new and exciting energy, but
the music is the same style their fans have come to know.
The duo of Preston Brust and Chris Lucas have enjoyed hit singles,
sold-out concert appearances here and abroad, and have tasted the
top of the chart as two of Nashville’s fastest-rising songwriters.
Their profile has risen in the business thanks to the pair of hit
singles from two of the format’s most iconic voices.

Get Ready to experience Livin’ Loud
“I think having Keith Urban recording “You Gonna Fly” and giving
us our first number one song really changed it all, and having Tim
McGraw doing “Truck Yeah” a few months later was huge to us as
songwriters, said Lucas.
LOCASH has recently appeared on the Today Show, Jimmy
Kimmel Live, and Times Square on New Year’s Eve as well as their
debut at the historic Grand Ole Opry.
LOCASH has made believers out of Nashville, radio, and the
corporate world as well. They have earned endorcement deals
from Dean Guitars, Under Armour, and Mossy Oak apparel, Bud
Light, Bowtick Bows and Crossbows, as well as Kicker Audio, who
supposed their “Livin Loud” tour. Chris and Preson also believe in
giving back to their communities by participating in charities such
as D.A.R.E., St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, and the T.J. Martell
Foundation.
LOASH performance is included with tickets to the Silver Dome
Awards at $50 each or included with any One-Day ($99) or
Two-Day ($149) Pass. Ticket information at www.ilba.org.

Meet the RAB Training Staff:
Brandeis Hall, Vice President of Professional Development
“In my current position as Vice President of Professional Development, I get to offer Radio stations vibrantly
creative solutions for their clients, specializing in helping them find and maximize revenue sources outside
of traditional advertising budgets. I drink prodigious amounts of coffee and teas (excepting Earl Grey, which
is vile). And I still travel at every opportunity, visiting all but two states in the continental U.S., many of the
Caribbean islands, Alaska, South Africa, traipsing back to Europe and dear England, and to Idaho Falls, Idaho
(which is practically Canada, if you ask me). My current mantra is, “Keep calm and read Jane Austen.” Oh, and I
can sing the Greek alphabet; but rarely do.” https://www.facebook.com/brandeis.hall
