Traditional Chinese Qigong:
The Practice of Motherhood
Levels I-V
Charlotte Rotterdam
Dale Asrael (Levels I-IV) and Eva Wong (Level V)
Tantric Buddhist teachings invite us to regard all
aspects of our world as sacred and all activities
as integral to our spiritual path. How then does
motherhood with its profound joys, lifelong
commitment, and inevitable challenges become
a spiritual practice? In this weekend, we draw on
key teachings and meditative practices from the
Tibetan Buddhist tradition to reveal the profound
practice of motherhood. We will encounter the
divine Mother in both her peaceful and wrathful
manifestations and gain insight and inspiration for
working with the broad spectrum of emotions we
traverse as mothers. Through teachings, meditation,
and discussion we will weave together a supportive
and generative community and develop tools
to take back into daily life. All are welcome; no
previous meditation experience is necessary.
Levels I-II: April 1 – 3 | Level III: June 9 – 11
Level IV: June 11 – 13 | Level V: June 13 – 15
Cultivate strength of body and calmness of mind
through the healing Taoist practice of qigong. This
intensive program is a rare opportunity to receive
instruction in two unique qigong lineages – the PreCelestial Limitless Gate School (Xiantianwujimen)
and the Yiquan School.
Tuition: Levels I-II: $195 + 2 nights
Levels III, IV, or V: $195 for each level
+ 2 nights per level
Tuition: $185 + 2 nights

AWAKEN YOUR HEART AND MIND
In Level I, we will practice techniques to strengthen
the musculoskeletal systems, nourish internal
organs, circulate energy, and still the mind. In Level
II, we will delve more deeply into postures that
cultivate flexibility, strength, and softness in the
joints, muscles, and tendons. We will also learn selfmassage techniques to support our internal organs
and circulate qi—or life energy—through our
meridians. In Levels III, IV, and V, we will learn animal
forms for balance and strength as well as practices
for removing blockages. Talks on qigong, Chinese
medicine, and Taoism will be included. Levels I-II
must be taken together. Levels III-V may be taken
separately but sequentially.

FLOW:
SHAMBHALA
Teachings and Practices
from MindfulnessBased Stress Reduction
(MBSR)
Yoga and Meditation
Learn to Meditate
Katharine Kaufman
Patricia Kelly
We have all had moments or
days that flow well. This delightful
motion may begin in what the
yogis call “nadis”, or energetic
channels, which run throughout
our bodies. Our individual rhythms
are unique and in “flow,” we are
free of striving, finding lightness
and ease while inhabiting our
body. We discover that stillness,
small movements, and simply being
present with our breath allow us to
unearth our quiet wisdom, as well
as prepare us for more spectacular
sequences of postures. When we
return to stillness, we are different
for having moved. In this retreat,
we will investigate this interplay
of movement and stillness by
partnering sitting meditation with
yoga. We will practice a variety
of creative asana sequences,
deepening and refreshing our
practice. By listening to our
body’s natural flow rather than
demanding a certain performance,
we may experience a practice that
is rich, refreshing, nourishing, and
supports our well-being.
It seems we all agree that
training the body through
exercise, diet, and relaxation
is a good idea. So why don’t
we think about training our
minds? This weekend retreat will
give accessible and powerful
meditation practice techniques
to help us find peace within
ourselves while developing a
strong and flexible mind. We will
draw from Turning the Mind Into
an Ally, the best-selling book
by Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche,
as we explore this question
together in a contemplative and
nurturing environment.
Janet Solyntjes
SPRING | SUMMER PROGRAMS
Inspired by the work of Jon
Kabat-Zinn, this extended
retreat offers an in-depth
look at mindfulness tools for

Through sitting, walking,
and body scan meditation
practices, mindful yoga, and
extended periods of silence,
we will return to our lives
better equipped to manage

Charley Cropley
Bodily sickness, like all suffering,
has real, discoverable causes.
The cause is not cancer, colitis,
weak adrenals, or a lowered
immune system. The cause of our
health problems is the innocent
misuse of our own body and
mind. During this empowering
retreat, we will discover how
we connect with our ability to
eat, think, move, and relate.
Through our exploration of these
four essential activities, we will
learn how to skillfully imbue
our daily lives with care and
free ourselves from habits that
repeatedly cause harm. After our
weekend together, you will see
unmistakably the healing power
you have and how to wield it to
revitalize your body and mind.
Tuition: $190 + 2 nights
Charley Cropley, ND, is a
Naturopathic physician who, after 35
years of practice, uses no medicines.
He teaches his clients that they are
endowed with self-healing capacities
exactly equal to their condition.
They learn that illness itself is what
heals them. It awakens their love of
themselves and guides them in the
heroic work of healing their own selfharming ways.

SHAMBHALA
The Art of Being Human:
Foundations of
Chinese Divination:
Shambhala Training I
Principles of the I Ching
Jonathan Barbieri
Eva Wong
Through the practice of meditation, we glimpse
unconditional goodness as the ground of our
existence. This immersive weekend workshop
helps us open to ourselves with gentleness and
appreciation and begin to see our potential as
genuine and compassionate human beings. This
program is recommended for new and experienced
meditators, as well as those looking to enrich their
existing spiritual path.
Chinese divination is the art of reading the
energetic patterns of the universe so that we can
live harmoniously in the world, appreciate the
flux and permanence of the Tao, and intuit the
interdependency of all things. In this program,
participants will learn the foundations and tools of
divination: the trigrams of the bagua, the celestial
stems, terrestrial branches, the Chinese calendar
system, and principles of hexagram transformations
that form the heart of all I Ching- based systems
of divination. All Chinese forms of divination have
a strong component of omen reading. A diviner
first reads omens before deciding whether it is
auspicious to perform the divination. Participants
will also be given basic instructions on how to read
omens from the natural and social world that can
impact the divination process. The program features
an omen-reading walk around Shambhala Mountain
Center to observe and interpret happenings in the
phenomenal world, presentations, and work groups.
Participants will receive a booklet that summarizes
materials presented in the course.
You will receive a copy of Shambhala: The Sacred
Path of the Warrior by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche.
Tuition: $150 + 2 nights
Jonathan Barbieri has taught Buddhist and Shambhala
trainings extensively throughout North America for
over 30 years. Each year he presents a New Year’s
Resolution program at Shambhala Mountain Center
that explores how to bring our aspirations into focus
by slowing down and seeing more clearly through
Mindfulness meditation. Jon has consulted with cities
and counties on workforce development, created
contemplative co-housing communities and, most
recently, taught Mindfulness programs to public
agencies and businesses. He was formerly the Executive
Director of Shambhala Mountain Center.
This program is a requirement for all subsequent
Chinese Divination programs offered by Eva Wong.
Tuition: $300 + 2 nights
Eva Wong is a lineage carrier of Xiantianwujimen
Taoism, a lineage that specializes in qigong as well as
divination and the study of the I Ching. She has written

Mindfulness Retreat
for Educators
Walking the Path of the Dragon:
Rona Wilensky & Linda Wallace
Eva Wong & Peter van der Molen
Take time this summer to cultivate your capacity
for attention, emotional balance and compassion
both in and out of the classroom. Designed to
support you in bringing mindful presence to your
personal life and professional work in schools,
this retreat includes periods of silent meditation
practice, mindful movement, solitary reflection,
experiences in and with the natural world, and
opportunities to share perspectives and experiences
with other educators.
For thousands of years, the cultures of Asia have
used their knowledge and understanding of energies
in the land to situate towns, build homes, locate
spiritual centers, and bury the dead. In China, this
discipline of knowledge is known as Fengshui. Deeply
rooted in Taoist philosophy and the view that our
place in the universe is not to dominate but to live
in harmony with nature, Fengshui inspires us to see
and experience the flow of energy in the land. At the
heart of Fengshui is the belief that land is filled with
qi, or energy, and this energy is carried in mountains,
valleys, rocks, and waterways. The oldest form of
Fengshui is called Kanyu, which is the observation
and interpretation of landforms. Kan means mountain,
and yu means valley. In this program, participants
will learn how to identify benevolent, wrathful, and
malevolent energy, evaluate types of mountain, valley,
and water energies, as well as recognize geographic
features that regulate, amplify, and channel energy in
the land.
Mindfulness for educators is part of a global
movement to bring research-based practices to
professionals in sectors such as human services,
physical and mental health care, military,
legal services, and business. Person by person,
organization by organization, the practices and
view of mindfulness are helping to transform
individual lives and social structures across society.

of experience (or no experience) with
mindfulness practices.

Family Camp
Women’s Summer
Meditation and
Yoga Retreat
Steve Sachs & Kelly Lindsey
Looking to get away to nature with your family this summer?
Come nurture bonds while rejuvenating your spirit in the beautiful
terrain of Shambhala Mountain Center. Family Camp is a creative
and contemplative retreat the whole family can enjoy. Take time
for yourself in the mornings with meditation, yoga, workshops, or
just relaxing in nature while your children participate in enriching
group activities. The afternoons and evenings offer fun family
activities like guided hiking, yoga, dharma art, storytelling, talent
show, singing, and dancing.
Children are in a morning program from 9:15-12:15, grouped
by age: Tigers (3-5), Lions (6-7), Garudas/Rights of Passage
Children (8-10), and Dragons (11-14). Activities are varied and
experiential including craft projects, time outdoors, stories, songs,
hikes in the woods, and group games. Children are introduced to
sitting meditation and meditative arts as ways to work with their
hearts and minds. They are also introduced to the notion of basic
goodness as a way to instill confidence, bravery, and compassion
– all while having fun and developing friendships!
This special program, led by Kelly Lindsey, marks the transition
children begin to make from being solely family-centered to
becoming important individual members of their community.
Through sitting meditation, kyudo (Zen archery), haiku, ikebana,
calligraphy, and other meditative arts, Rites of Passage gives
children powerful tools to help them care for their own mind
and emotions. These tools also empower them to relate to their
internal and external worlds with confidence and gentleness. At the
week’s end, this transformative program is sealed with a powerful
ceremony in which the children take a vow of mindfulness and
kindness towards themselves and others.
Our bodies hold emotions,
images, patterns, and stories.
When we inhabit our bodies
through mindfulness practices,
we come to know ourselves
as complete and wakeful
beings. During this rejuvenating
program, we will play with the
four postures of meditation,
practice nourishing yoga, and
retreat in the forests, fields,
and groves of Shambhala
Mountain Center. Through sitting
meditation, we will contemplate
the nature of Way-Seeking Mind,
the tender under-world of our
being. Our practice and insight
will deepen through silent
periods, and our community will
develop understanding and trust
through talking circles.
This retreat takes place in a
scenic pavilion among the pine
trees – an indoor/outdoor space
– and is limited to 15 women.
Tuition: $285 + 4 nights
See Katharine’s bio on page 10.

SHAMBHALA
Mindful Hiking:
Learn to Meditate
Opening to Change
Greg Smith
Kay Peterson
It seems we all agree that training the body
through exercise, diet, and relaxation is a good
idea. So why don’t we think about training our
minds? This weekend retreat will teach accessible
and powerful meditation practice techniques
to help us find peace within ourselves while
developing a strong and flexible mind. We will
draw from Turning the Mind Into an Ally, the bestselling book by Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, as we
explore this question together in a contemplative
and nurturing environment.
Sometimes we welcome change in our lives; other
times it comes unexpectedly. It may feel like our
life adventure has brought us to the banks of a
swollen river and we’re not sure how to proceed –
do we turn back or take a leap of faith?
You will receive a copy of Turning the Mind Into
an Ally at the retreat.
Tuition: $150 + 2 nights
Tuition: $175 + 2 nights
AWAKEN YOUR HEART AND MIND
Greg Smith, a well known sangha artist and thangka
painter, has lived and painted at Shambhala Mountain
Center for many years. He has been a student of
meditation since 1976, first with Chögyam Trungpa and
later with his son Sakyong Mipham. Greg has taught
meditation and Buddhist studies since 1982.
Through engaging mindfulness/awareness practices,
we can delve deeply into our connection with the
natural world, turn our attention toward the subtle
interplay of our thoughts and feelings, tune into
our sense perceptions, and rediscover our innate
ability to weather impermanence in our lives with
grace and strength. Join us for a weekend that will
include sitting and hiking meditation (moderate
difficulty at 7,000’- 9,000’ elevation), restorative
yoga, group discussions, and lots of time for solo
reflection in nature.

Big Sky, Big Mind:
Running with the Mind of Meditation
Contemplative Astronomy
Cynthia MacKay, Marty Kibiloski, Tara Michelle & Mike Sandrock
Jim Tolstrup & Andrea Schweitzer
This popular retreat is based on Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche’s bestselling book Running with the Mind of Meditation: Lessons for Training
the Body and the Mind. Geared for runners, walkers, and other athletes,
the book offers fresh insights into the activities of meditation and
movement, and the ways our running experience can be dramatically
enhanced by working with the principles of meditation.
Come experience a personal
connection with the universe,
under the sparkling, starry skies
of the Rocky Mountains. We will
combine interactive astronomy
activities with periods of
contemplation; presentations of
the astronomical lore from Celtic,
Tibetan, and Native American
traditions; and a guided walk to
observe the interplay of the sun
and seasons with the land. No
astronomy background is required.
Our retreat will bring these teachings to life through direct
instructions in the practices of sitting, walking and running
meditation, yoga, and discussion groups. We feel our way into the
mindfulness of the Tiger, discover the pure appreciation and joy of
the Lion, and see our basic goodness in the strength and gentleness
of Windhorse. Designed for runners and walkers of all levels, as well
as other athletes wishing to experience the joy of synchronizing mind
and body.

Sometimes our emotions
bring joy, ease, and clarity. At
other times they can color our
perception and lead to habits of
aggression, grasping, ignoring,
pride, and jealousy. Derived from
Buddhist tantra, this practice
recognizes five archetypal
patterns of innate intelligence
that can arise in a sane or
neurotic way. By cultivating
deeper awareness and loving
kindness for our diverse
cognitive and emotional styles,
our neuroses are transformed
into boundless wisdom and
compassion resulting in
clarity, calm, discernment,
confidence, and skillful action in
relationships.

Compassionate Acceptance:
A Mindful Path to Healing
Life’s Wounds
Thomas Roberts
We all carry with us a store of life’s hurts,
betrayals, and traumas. Much of the impact of
these experiences resides deeply in the nerves
and cells of our bodies, to be re-lived repeatedly
throughout our lives. Too often, we develop a type
of aversion to these hurts – a kind of wishing they
would go away. Deep healing occurs only when
we soften our self-aversion and begin to accept
and relate wisely with deep compassion to that
part of ourselves that needs healing.
This retreat will provide a spacious and
safe place to work on bringing mindful and
compassionate acceptance to these difficulties.
Through contemplative, Taoist, and Buddhist
teachings and healing practices you will explore
a kind of emotional, spiritual, and physical
healing based on acceptance and compassion
that is often overlooked. This depth of healing is
integral to deepening the spiritual path.
You will leave this retreat with a lasting
foundation to help you tap into the healing
wisdom of your body.
Tuition: $185 + 3 nights
