BFO-Durham held its annual event “A Walk to Remember” on Sunday, March 4th MAY 2012
where bereaved parents gathered together to share in the memories of the children
they have lost. Approximately $9,600 was raised and will allow us to continue to offer Infant Loss Drop-In
Monday 7th, 7-9 p.m.
free support programs and services to bereaved families across the region.
We would like to thank the generous donors and corporate sponsors who contributed
to an unforgettable day for all. This year, The Carter family donated the banner in
loving memory of their daughter, Julie Carter and their son, Paul Carter; Cathy and
Fritz Wiener provided the refreshments. Fripps and Binky the Clown entertained the
children with face painting and balloon making. The Charles Street Band provided live
music for all to enjoy. One of the raffle prizes was an owl print donated by Colleen
Timmins in memory of her son, Greg, who sketched this drawing.

A MESSAGE
FROM THE
EDITOR
As I work on the May Newsletter, I am very much aware that Mother’s Day is fast approaching and that this is a very
difficult time of year for you. Some of you know that I am not a bereaved mom—I am a bereaved aunt who has
watched for the past 13 years as my sister struggles on this day and on her son’s anniversary date which is a week
later. I cannot pretend to even understand the heartache that all of you are experiencing, but I hope that through
my work as the Editor of this Newsletter and the Web Site, I have helped you in some small way through your grief
journey.
This has been a very rewarding time for me, more so in the past year, as I have retired from full time
work and have become more involved with BFO-Durham, both as a Board Member and Editor. I have made many
friends over the past 12 years and have come to think of BFO members as my extended family. Please keep your
contributions and submissions coming as they are so needed and so deeply appreciated.
Look for the Summer
Bulletin sometime in July and the third 2012 newsletter by the end of September. My thanks to Sharon for meeting
all my demands and for everyone who has contributed to this newsletter; I couldn’t do this without you. Have a

OF A

LIFE
A few weeks ago I attended the funeral of my dear friend Corrine. As a member of a Catholic religious order, she
had spent some twenty years in Peru doing missionary work. After she left religious life, she spent her last few
decades using her healing energies as a massage therapist.
It was the gift of massage that Corrine offered me after my son David’s death. Under her magic hands I felt the first
release from the great clench of new grief. She coaxed full breaths into my constricted lungs and gently guided me
back into the flow of life. Such moments of connection were her deepest joy, she said, and her true life’s calling.
At her visitation, one of Corrine’s relatives stated his belief that Corrine had been gypped. Life had short-changed
her, he declared. With all the love she had to give, Corrine should have been a wife and mother, and from this
position he would not be moved.
In the eyes of this man, daring me, it seemed, to disagree with him, I saw my own reflection. Had I not also
believed at one time that my own son had been robbed of a full and long life? In eleven short years, how much of
life did he really get to experience? Oh yes, all those “should-have” thoughts had brought me to my knees plenty of
times too. And it was quite a while before I had the courage to question them. Were they true? How could I know
for sure? How could I know for sure that Corrine’s life had been somehow incomplete because it had followed a
different trajectory than others would have wished? Was it my place to decide that David’s life was less fulfilling for
having been short?
At this point in my journey, believing such things about David just layers pain upon pain, which I’m sure is not his
will for me. What I do know for sure is that David loved his life. So did Corrine. And they both taught me to love
mine as well. And perhaps this legacy is the true measure of their lives.

BFO-Durham for the past 13 years, has facilitated support groups, one-on-ones and is a past Director of the Board.

We're holding a special event at Boston Pizza in Oshawa on Thursday June 7th, 2012 from 5-9 pm, called
“CELEBRITY SERVER FUNDRAISER” where family, friends and supporters of BFO Durham Region are invited to
come out for dinner and be served by BFO Durham board members and volunteers of B.F.O. Our volunteers partner
with the serving staff of Boston Pizza to serve you and 10% of all food sales is donated by Boston Pizza to BFODurham. This is also a great opportunity to promote our organization, including displaying banners or posters in the
restaurant, and have some fun together at the same time.
So please come out, bring friends and family, and
support BFO-Durham in this fun event. Enjoy the experience of some of our BFO members being the 'CELEBRITY
SERVER' of the evening, serving you and your family or friends dinner from the great menu Boston Pizza has to offer.

For the past 14 weeks I have had the pleasure of interning at Bereaved Families of Ontario - Durham Region. In my
short time here, I have learned so much beyond paperwork and textbooks. During this time, I was lucky to have
had the opportunity of working every Monday with Sharon Sears, Director of Member Services. While interning, I
had the pleasure of being closely involved with the planning of the annual Walk to Remember, which was a great
success and I am so happy I was a part of the committee. I was incredibly lucky to work with the team at BFODurham and I will never forget any of you. Every strong person who walks through the doors of this organization
has truly become my role model. It is admirable how strong you all are. I know your loved ones are looking down
on you, smiling and proud. BFO-Durham was an amazing place to intern and I am sad my time here has come to an
end. It has been a memorable 14 weeks and I cannot wait to come back soon and visit!

The Scent of My Baby
When we think of babies, we think of that certain scent. The scent that newborns seem to have, for me - that came and went.
The scent of my baby is a different one, it’s not shampoo or baby powders. It’s not that “newborn scent” but that of fresh cut flowers.
For God chose my son to be with him and leave me down below. So the flowers I place upon his grave are the only scent I know.
So when I smell a flower, my son always comes to mind and the delicate scent of a flower seems to suit my son just fine.
For my son touched and brightened my life just like a flower may. And the true beauty of a flower was my son in every way.

A MOTHER’S PAIN
You see me smiling.
What you don't see is that I am screaming behind that smile.
You see me go on with everything....work....groceries.....life in general.
What you don't see is that it takes every ounce of energy I have just to breathe.
You see me alone with my thoughts.
What you don't see is me talking to him.
You see me say "I am fine".
What you don't see is the huge hole in my heart that can never be filled.
You see me and think "she's back to normal".
What you don't see is that there is no normal for me anymore.
You see me and think "Oh my God, I hope this never happens to me".
What you don't see is that as much as I long for you to understand me...I hope this never happens to you either.
You see me joking and laughing with others and think she must be getting over what has happened.
What you don't see is that I can never forget, nor would I want to, you don't get over the loss of a child.
You see me sad and don't know what to say so you keep going.
What you don't see is all I really want is for you to ask how I am doing, really, and give me a hug.
You see that life goes on.
What you don't see is the moment my child died, the life I had will never be the same.
You see that I am strong...... do not be deceived.
What you don't see is that I am weak and weary. Some days "I am 6 feet from the edge".
What you see is a mask....a lie. The mask helps you cope with me and me cope with myself.
What you don't see is the raw sometimes unbearable pain.
You don't see me being unable to breathe.
What you don't see is my despair. You don't see me screaming to Heaven for God to give my child back.
What you don't see you could never understand anyway unless you walk a mile in my shoes.

Our Library is really growing according to our book records, but our shelves are not always reflecting the same. While we
encourage members to make use of our resources, we currently have over 150 books not returned between the years
2003–2011. These books are mostly donated by our members in memory of a beloved child or other member of the family
and often contain a loving inscription. It is upsetting that these books are missing. Many times in grief we push things
aside, unable or unwilling to deal with them.
It is with this in mind that we ask all members to consider us at this time of spring cleaning and the latest craze of decluttering. If you have books you have borrowed or bought over the years which relate to grief studies and our healing
process, please bring them back or donate them in memory of your loved one. A special label will be placed on the inside
cover of all donated books acknowledging this heartfelt distinction.

“RUN TO REMEMBER”
On January 26, 2008, Jeff was suddenly taken from us in a violent act.
This was more than the loss of a young life.
It was the loss of a son, brother and truly loved friend. Words cannot describe the loss and heartache his family and
friends continue to endure.
The 4th Annual Run To Remember—in loving memory of Jeffrey David Warne (part of the Whitby International North
Marathon) will be held on May 27th this year. “Team Jeff” will consist of runners and walkers of all ages and fitness
levels. Our goal is to cross the finish line in honour of our beloved and dearly missed Jeff and to raise money for
Bereaved Families of Ontario—Durham Region.
Please join us!
In the past three years we have raised over $23,000 for BFO-Durham by way of the Run to Remember. Our goal for
this year’s run is to raise $11,111.11 - the number 11 is more than just a number. It was Jeff’s favourite number
and he always wore it proudly on his hockey and soccer jerseys.
We would like to ask for your sponsorship or donation to help us achieve our goal. All sponsorships of $250 or more
will have their company name prominently displayed on the running shirts worn by all Team Jeff members and also
printed in the quarterly newsletter distributed to more than 600 families through BFO-Durham.

MEMBER SERVICES
In April, we celebrated our volunteers during the week of April 15th. To say 'thank you' seems to be insufficient in
terms of my appreciation for all the support and hard work that our volunteers have contributed to BFO-Durham.
This year, with all of our changes, I have relied heavily on our volunteers; whether the job was big or small, they
were always there to lend a helping hand. From our various groups, drop-ins, fundraisers, office help, the one-onone support for our parents, and the tremendous job that our board members do to keep our operation running
smoothly, all of our volunteers should be recognized as a valuable asset to our organization. This is especially true
when new parents come into a drop-in or need to talk to another parent about the loss of their child; we can always
rely on our dedicated volunteers to provide the kind of compassion and understanding to help them through their
difficult time.
I would like to express my sincere appreciation and gratitude to all of our volunteers for their long hours and their
significant contributions this year in support of our organization. Despite the difficulty at times in our busy lives to
find the time to contribute, we all appreciate the effort from each and every volunteer as we work together in loving
memory of our children.

In the fall of 2008, BFO-Durham, in recognition of its 15th anniversary, planted a tree in the Newcastle Memorial
Forest in “Memory of All Our Children”. The Memorial Forest was established by the Newcastle Lions Club to provide
a living memorial for a loved one.
The Newcastle Lions Club would like to invite you and your family to the final dedication service to be held on
Saturday May 12, 2012 at 2.00 pm. They advise that you bring along a lawn chair.
