PRESIDENT’S CORNER
Welcome to summer fun in First Colony! First off, I
hope all of you are planning on attending our annual 4th of July party at the beach. We have big fun
planned with great food, fun games and word has it,
the dance floor will be open when the sun goes
down with hits from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, for
your dancing pleasure! I also wanted to remind all
of you about the Fools Regatta Marina fundraiser
on August 2. Remember, sometimes the simplest or
most stupid entry wins, so break out that wood,
cardboard, tape/glue and participate in this hysterical event.
My July thanks goes out to Larry Stolarski for all
his afterhours work at the pool, Bill Salyer for
mowing the parking field behind the tennis courts
and lastly, all the parent volunteers of our beloved
First Colony Flyers who not only held a great fundraiser, but got our season off to a great start with
over 155 members.
With the pool in full swing, please make note that
proper membership registration is being checked by
our computer database. Our attendants will be reporting violators to the chair and or board members
for follow up. As a reminder, our outside members
of the pool do not have vehicle stickers. We are
grateful to these members who now outnumber
GFCACA resident memberships!
There are a few of you who have not paid your
ramp fees to launch your watercraft. Please make
sure the “white stickers of 2013” have been replaced with the “2014 green ones”, hint hint!
The Board appreciates the lengthy due diligence of
the land sale at the end of Shellbank and thanks you
for all your input. The General Membership overwhelmingly voted to proceed with the sale at our
June 11th meeting. The Board looks forward to
proposing the Capital Reserves use of these funds in
our 2015 budget presentation for everyone to vote on.
A big thanks to everyone who helped organize the
reception for the Liebler Family. Len was a proud
First Colony resident, a great neighbor and a great
friend. He will be missed.
In closing, I have been using email blasts from time
to time and will continue to do so in the future should
something need to be communicated. If you have a

JULY 11, 2014 BOARD MTG. MINUTES
President Craig Larson called the meeting to order at
7:03 PM. Board Members present were Tucker Edmonds, Sonya Peretti-Hull, John Otey, Terry Arnett,
Alisa Lacy, Jim Szykman, and Amy Day.
The minutes from the March General Meeting were
approved as written.
Tucker gave the Treasurer’s report. Our current
membership is 328 households. The pool membership is 134: this year we have more outside members
than GFCACA members. For the fiscal year through
May 30, 2014: Revenue: $158,523; Operating Expenses: $65,073; Capital Expenditures: $16,535; Net
Income: $76,915. Please note the fiscal year runs
from October 1 through September 30.
Park Report: Lisa Tuckey stated that Mike McCann
will be the new chair for the Park. Lisa will continue
to help out and show Mike the ropes during this transition. As the weather has warmed up the usual

summer problems are returning. Craig reported the
previous weekend the park was littered with beer
bottles, cigarette butts, and several pairs of tennis
shoes thrown over the electrical wires. Also, two
picnic benches were broken and the new air conditioning unit for the pool house was smashed. Most
of the damage seems to be coming from young
adults rather than teenagers. The Board and the
members discussed various options to keep the park
clean and safe. These options include gating the
park with a keycard access as we have at the marina, hiring a security guard, using video surveillance, and requesting more frequent patrols by
James City County police. In the meantime, the
gates will be locked in the evenings and unlocked
in the mornings.
Pool Report: Ruth Larson stated the Flyers have
155 members, which is more members than we
have had in a long time. Pool Manager John Poorman and his crew did a great job opening the pool
for the season. We will have a strict check-in policy
at the pool: all members and guests must check in
at the pool house. GFCACA pool members and
outside pool members are reminded that guests may
visit two times. After that they must join the pool
in order to use it. The pool committee is planning
on having two evening special events during the
season. These fundraising events will be open to
the general public.
Marina: Richard Schauffler reported W&M sailing
team has built new sheds and will remove the floating dock. Johnny Timbers Tree Service who gave
GFCACA a large discount removed the large, dead
pine trees. Many thanks to Johnny Timbers and the
Hull family for their help.
Clubhouse Report: Sandy Tarantelli stated the
front of the clubhouse was painted in the spring.
The interior paint was touched up. Marion Wolfe is
doing a great job managing the clubhouse and rentals are up this year.
In Old Business: Last year the Board approved the
sale of the 9-acre wetlands parcel to the Riley’s. The
General Membership approved of the sale with restrictions on improvements. Board Member John
Otey represents the Riley’s as their Realtor. Craig
made it very clear that John was not on the Board at
the time of the initial approval. Furthermore, John
has recused himself from any votes concerning the
sale of the property.
The Riley’s attended the meeting and stated their intent for the lot is preservation of the creek and to stop
the erosion of the beach. Greg Davis, attorney for the
Riley’s gave a presentation on why the Riley’s would
like to purchase the lot without the structural restrictions amendment. Existing regulations through the
Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act and James City
County provide protection of the wetland. After a
lengthy discussion among the membership regarding
the pros and cons of the sale of the lot, Tucker made a
motion to accept the original contract from the Riley’s to the Greater First Colony Civic Association
with whatever current deed restrictions the Shellbank
Drive residents have. The motion was approved with
23 yeas and 2 opposed. The motion carried and the
sale of the land to the Riley’s was approved. Craig
thanked the membership for their careful consideration of the sale.
In New Business: The Board and members discussed
the landscaping contract for the association. A comprehensive contract that includes all the entrances, the
Park, and the mulch is needed. The entrances have
not been mowed as often as needed. Craig noted
Julie Murphy takes care of all the bushes and trees at
the entrances and it looks beautiful.
There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 8:47 pm.

Neighbor 2 Neighbor Report: Ann Hunt stated the
first meeting went well. Kevan Danker will write
an article for the newsletter explaining the program.
Ellen Graham will draft a survey to our members
asking what types of volunteer jobs the neighborhood can offer. Kevan is also looking for members
to be on the committee.
Garden Club Report: Ann Hunt presented a $500
check from the Garden Club to the Fast Forward
Fund to be earmarked for the park.

SUNSHINE COMMITTEE
We sent our sympathy to Diane Lehner of Jameswood on the passing of her husband Bill.
We also sent our sympathy to JoAnne Liebler and
Augie Liebler on the untimely passing of her husband and his brother, Len. They are blessed to have
so much family in the area to comfort them at this
time.
Ralph and Joyce Cobb, who are our very first residents, and who still live in the first house built in
First Colony down on Shellbank Drive, celebrated
their 91st birthdays in June. They have been married more years than they care to remember.
I appreciate so much when neighbors inform me of sadness or sickness in our community. Please don’t assume
that someone else will tell me. I would rather get 10
calls than none to alert me to sickness or any other adversity. We want those in pain to know that we care. It
doesn’t take a minute to call or send me an e-mail.

WELCOMING COMMITTEE
Spring and summer are the traditional times for
people to move yet we have had very little activity
in our neighborhood this year. We are always on
the look-out for new people moving into the
neighborhood. We ride bikes and walk around the
community looking for realty signs and moving
vans, but people can move in or out in one day and
hardly be noticed by most people who live
here. We always appreciate when residents do notice new neighbors and notify us. We look forward
to welcoming new people and familiarizing them
with our neighborhood. Besides taking booklets
and brochures about Williamsburg and nearby activities, we take our latest directory and a map of
our area. Most important of all, we take an application for membership in the association and tell them
about the advantages and opportunities offered by
joining the association. We don't want anyone to
miss the fun we have here so contact us when you
see someone new moving into the neighborhood.

BEACH AND MARINA REPORT
Right of Way in the Channel
A reminder now we are in the busy season that the
rules of the road are:
 Incoming boats have right of way (since once in
the channel they cannot escape!). Outbound
boats should wait and only proceed if the channel is clear. Look before you head in or out.
 The channel is deepest on the side nearest the
docks. So, only one boat can safely pass
through at a time.
 Kayaks and canoes should not hang out in the
channel.
 Fishermen must tend lines and haul in to avoid
getting snagged on boats.
How to Replace Your Card
If you have lost a gate card here is what you must
do. Send email to firstcolonymarina@gmail.com.
You need to include your first and last name, address, and the 5 digit number on the card you still
have (find it on the edge, just the first 5, like 62313.
We then cancel the lost card. You need to send $10
replacement cost to GFCACA, PO Box 5123, Williamsburg VA 23188 (same place as membership).
You will be issued a new card. There is a delay
while that card gets entered in the gate computer.
You will be notified when that has happened.
Don’t Throw that Card Away!
In response to questions, here are some answers:
These cards come with lifetime guarantee and we
have never had one fail yet. So if you have one that
does not work, it just means it is not active in the
computer—membership lapses or it was reported
lost. If you find a lost one, or move away, please
turn the cards back in so we can re-use them and
save money. As long as you remain a member, your
card is valid, cards do not get replaced year to year.
Looking Good
We have hired First Colony high school student
Tristan Goering to do regular maintenance (mowing
the lawn, trimming the perimeter) for the summer.
This creates another job for neighborhood kids, is
cheaper than a commercial service, and is keeping
the marina well maintained.

FIRST COLONY COMMUNITY GARDEN

Summer is finally here. And with summer comes
swimming, as many of the young people in our
neighborhood know. The long awaited summer league
season is here! This year our team is to be headed off
by a new head coach, Allison Henning. In addition to
coaching Flyers this summer, she is an assistant coach
for year round team Coast Guard Blue Dolphins
(CGBD). While challenging the swimmers to do their
best, Coach Allison has put special emphasis on having fun while training hard. In addition, this year we
have a record number of swimmers, in excess of 180.
Our first swim meet was a friendship meet on Monday, June 16th. It was an excellent learning experience
for the new swimmers to get to know how a meet
works. It was also a good chance for our new head
coach to get to know her swimmers. The regular season starts on Monday, June 23rd and will continue until July 21st. Our home meets are June 30th, July 7th,
and July 14th. We encourage you to come out and enjoy the good food at the concessions stand and support our neighborhood swim team. The concession
stand will be open at 5 pm and the meets start at 6 pm.
We hope to see you there!
We’re looking forward to a good season, as we are
ranked second in the division as of last year. The
rankings for all of division one are as follows:
1) Kingsmill Sharks
2) First Colony Flyers
3) Queens Lake Eagles
4) Greensprings Gators
5) Kingswood Klams
And new to our division this year, 6) Windsor Forrest
Frogs.
Anyone interested in viewing the standings for all of
the other divisions can find answers at vpsu.com.
On June 14th, we had our annual Spaghetti Dinner
fundraiser. Everyone involved had tons of fun, from
the kids serving to the customers being served. A big
thank you goes out to Lynn and Rex Hoover and
Karen McWilliams for organizing it. Thank you also
to everyone else who helped both to set up and help
the dinner run smoothly, especially the Colburn girls
(Meredith, Lindsey, and Katie) and their mother
Cathy, who all stayed late to help clean up. Thank you
also to everyone who came out to support us and have
something to eat. We hope to see you all next year!
