Chesopeian Colony "On the Lynnhaven River" April 2016 Newsletter www.ChesopeianColonyCivicLeague.org Inside: President’s Message by Jenny Reed Dredging Update Party Shed Treasury Report Garden Club Directory Clean the Bay Happy spring, residents of Chesopeian Colony! I want to send out a heartfelt thank you for allowing me to serve as the President of the Colony. I do not take this job lightly. There are many issues that have been moving slowly that I want to put on the fast track to prove we can be an effective board. Upcoming: Civic League Meetings Tues, April 26th 7:00pm Tues, June 28th Tues, October 25th Tues, January 31st Hope to see you there! Some good news. We have a new board member. Ben McCarty took my spot on the board as I moved up to be President. If you've had an early morning Mimosa at the end of the trail during the July 4th Parade, you can thank Mr. McCarty and his beautiful wife, Sami, for their contribution to the Colony. The board is very interested in beautifying the front entrance as a whole. I am making this my pet project. We have recently placed sprinklers on the West side to allow us someday to have grass in that region. We are also moving forward on updating the lighting and cleaning up the rust stains on the front entrance signs. We are currently taking donations towards updating the lighting with LED flood lights from below, as opposed to the florescent lighting, which is very "dated" to say the least. Due to some opposing views from a few Colony residents, we are working to fund the project with private donations. We are asking for $25 donations made out to CCCL with the words "front lighting" in the comments if you would like to support this project. The project has been estimated to cost a little over $2300 for all the lights, electric work and installation. We have already raised over $1500 by just publicizing the project on the Nextdoor app. I am personally very grateful for the overwhelming support from a number of our residents. Following the lighting change, we will then address the landscape of the front entrance, as a few of the bushes will need to be dug up to allow the lighting changes. If you have any suggestions on either the lighting or the landscape, please let me know so I can present it to the board or the garden club. Thank you all again for allowing me to serve! Please consider coming to the civic league meetings and getting involved in the Colony. -Jenny Reed Ollice (docreed@yahoo.com) Dredging Update – Frank Gurdziel We reached a major milestone for our project when the Joint Permit Application was submitted today to the regulatory agencies for their review. There have been many months of work designing the channels for the community dredging, including all of the requests for private dredging work on participants’ property to access their docks and boat lifts. Adjustments have been made to accommodate participants’ requests and the unfortunate obstacles presented by a few folks. The net impact has been a reduction from 131 to 121 properties included in the JPA application though we can still amend the application if the situation changes. The next step for those of us requesting private dredging will be to complete a new Disclosure Statement Form. This form was created to prevent conflict of interest situations from becoming an issue for city leaders. These forms will be mailed to the applicable participants in the next couple of weeks. They will have a cover letter explaining the form and requesting the owners sign and return the form. Please do this promptly! It is important that we do what we can to expedite the review process. Although there is now a formal project design, the city cannot bid the dredging project to select a contractor or initiate any work until the project is approved by the regulatory agencies. If you have any questions, feel free to contact any member of the dredging committee and we’ll make sure your questions are addressed. Clean the Bay Day – Event Chair Steve Mangum Join your neighbors at the neighborhood entrance, June 4th at 10:00 am for “Clean the Bay Day”. Adults and kids will work together to clean the shoreline around Chesopeian Colony. To increase awareness, we are sponsoring a photo contest this year. Photos can be color or black and white and there will be two age categories: 17 and under and 18 and over. First place photos for each category will win $25. Images will be judged based on artistic composition and on how well they communicate the value of maintaining a clean waterway in our neighborhood. To sign up for Clean the Bay day or to submit an entry for the photo contest, email Steve at svmangum@gmail.com. In the subject line indicate your interest, either CLEAN THE BAY or PHOTO CONTEST. Party Shed We are opening up the tents, chairs and tables that the Colony owns for rental to those in the Colony for a nominal fee. In order to rent any items from the colony, you must be current on your dues. You can make reservation requests by sending an email to CCCLreservations@gmail.com. If you have any questions, call Steve Vigus at 636-7135. Man’s Best Friends – Jenny Reed Some housekeeping issues! The azaleas are blooming, the trees are ripe with pollen (ACHOO), and people are beginning to get outside to enjoy the warm weather. Many of our residents have dogs that they walk daily. As you walk your dogs, please remember there is a city leash law. Please make sure all of your furry four legged members of your family are properly leashed, so as to not inconvenience those who are not as fond of your dog as you are. Also, clean up after your dogs and DO NOT leave the bag on the side of the road. Common courtesy please - I'm sure the offending parties know who they are.
