PRESIDENT’S CORNER
Where did the summer go? Even though it went too
fast, it was another great summer in Greater First
Colony, don’t you think?! As always, I want to
thank the following people to kick off the September newsletter: Jerry Dye for the donations of
golden beverages that magically appear each party,
Ruth Larson for her countless hours as pool chair
this summer, my Fools Regatta help: Richard
Schauffler and his son Zack, John Lacey for the
sound system, our volunteer judges and the entire
Larson family for help running the event. I am
pleased to report we raised over $570.00 for the
Marina Fast Forward Fund between registrations
and donations. Our big winners were as follows:
People’s Choice-Christmas 2014, Most Ingeniousa rookie with his “Bottle Rocket”. Most Environmentally Friendly- the “Day Fairy” and lastly the
Worst Example of Naval Architecture and the coveted “Mr. Potato Head Award to Mr. Szykman and
his “Beer Boat” (need I say more). A special thanks
to Roger Hunt and all the volunteers for our Labor
Day Picnic.
On a sad note, Sandy Tarantelli has resigned her
position as Business Manager, effective September
1. I know I speak for every one when I say a huge
thank you for her nine years of service to Greater
First Colony. I am very pleased to report that
Megan Schultz has accepted the position of Business Manager. As many of you know, Megan has
been very involved in the budget process the past
few years and she has her Master’s Degree in Accounting from W&M. The board unanimously approved the hiring of Megan.
I hope you all received a copy of the 2015 budget
for GFCACA. A special thanks to Sandy Tarantelli
and Megan Schultz, as well as the board, for all
their work on the budget. I hope you are planning to
attend the General Membership meeting scheduled
for Sunday, September 14th at 4:00 pm at our clubhouse. The Board’s sincere hope is that by moving
this to a Sunday, we will have better attendance from
those of you who seem to always have a conflict with
children’s activities on weeknights (hint hint). We
have some very exciting news to share with all of you
at this meeting and we need to approve the budget.
There will be plenty of time for questions, if needed,
prior to the vote.
In closing, we want to wish our dear friend, Bob Hunt
and the entire Hunt family the very best, as Bob recovers from his accident on August 14th. You can
never keep a great man down, Bob, get well soon!

AUG. 5, 2014 BOARD MTG. MINUTES
President Craig Larson called the meeting to order at
7:04 PM. Board Members present were Tucker Edmonds, Sonya Peretti-Hull, John Otey, Jim Szykman,
John Hochella, Alisa Lacy, Amy Day, Kevan Danker,
and Terry Arnett. Meagan Schultz was also present.
The minutes from the July Meeting were approved as
written.
Tucker gave the Treasurer’s report. For the fiscal year
through July 31, 2014: Revenue: $176,521; Operating Expenses: $81,491; Capital Expenditures:
$17,581; Net Income: $77,449. Please note the fiscal
year runs from October 1 through September 30.
In New Business: The Wigginton’s of Merrimac
Trail are the owners of the Shellbank Woods house at
110 Jameswood that has been under construction for
the last 15 years. They have put a rope across the
front of the property. However unsightly the fence,.

with every security incident! If it’s an Emergency — Dial 911
James City County will not get involved unless the
fence is over 6 feet. They are, however, in violation of the restrictive covenants of Shellbank
Woods. The Board will be pursuing its options in
addressing the issue. John Otey stated residents
need to be mindful of the covenants within their
own neighborhoods. All Board Members agreed
and asked residents to abide by any covenants set
forth within their own neighborhood and for the
general good of all in GFCACA.
Kevan announced Williamsburg Area Transit Authority (WATA) will be adding a route along Greensprings Road with a stop at Greensprings and The
Maine. The route will follow Jamestown Road to
Greensprings Road to John Tyler Hwy to Route 199
and back to Jamestown Rd.
Business Manager Sandy Tarantelli has tendered
her resignation effective September 1. Sandy has
dedicated herself to GFCACA with amazing hard
work and perseverance for the past 9 years as Business Manager. The Board thanks her for her long
lasting service. Replacing Sandy will be First Colony resident Meagan Schultz. Meagan has served
on the Board in the past and has helped prepare the
budget for the last several years. Meagan holds an
MBA from William and Mary and is currently
studying to sit for the CPA Board Exams. The motion to hire Meagan Schultz passed unanimously.
The Board also approved to move the next General
Membership Meeting to Sunday, September 14 at
4PM. The Board hopes that a Sunday afternoon
meeting will allow more families to attend and allows the children to play on the playground during
the meeting.
In Old Business: The sale of the 9-acre wetlands
parcel is scheduled to close on August 22.
Calendar of Upcoming Events
The Board continued from the last meeting a
lengthy discussion of the 2015 Budget. Every committee request was considered and in depth conversations occurred concerning the Pool, Park, Clubhouse, Tennis Courts, Lake, Marina and Beach,
Community Garden and Landscaping in general.
Membership Dues and Initiation Fees for general
membership, the pool, and the marina were also
discussed. The Board will be implementing online
payment options for dues in the near future.
The suggested Reserve Study will be presented to
the General Membership Board Meeting in September. If approved, it will help us determine where
we need to apply the funds from the sale of the land
and give us a realistic assessment of our community
assets and their upcoming needs as our amenities
age.
Craig announced the Fools Regatta raised over $500
for the marina. The Board thanked the Larson family for another great event.
There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 9:14 pm.

Kevan reported on our website: Our site is currently hosted by Go Daddy and will require $200 to
maintain it. Eventually it will benefit GFCACA if
we update the website to one that is universal and
can be used with any web hosts.
The Board approved a new sign on John Rolfe to
direct traffic to turn left onto Shellbank to go to the
marina.

SUNSHINE COMMITTEE
My sincere thanks to all of the neighbors who assisted
Bob in his recent bicycle accident. I am sorry that I am
not aware of all of you by name, but I am so grateful for
your efforts. To Linda Knowlton and her daughter, big
hugs and thank you for your help and concern. To the
gentleman who called to alert me to the accident and to
let me know that an ambulance had been summoned, I
appreciate your help so very much. Please let me know
who you are so that I may personally thank you. We
have received many calls of concern and support and we
thank each and every one of you for these as well. The
entire Hunt family is so grateful to be living in this caring
neighborhood. Sylvia Hunt
Belated get well wishes were sent to Kerry
Armbruster of Crossover Rd, who had an operation
this summer.
Pam Franck of Shellbank Drive is undergoing heart
surgery at Duke University as I write this. I have
sent best wishes from the association, and hope that
by the time this is published she will be recovering
nicely.
We sent get well wishes to Sid Lanier of Shellbank,
who is recovering from an operation.
BEACH AND MARINA REPORT
I also sent a note to Howard Burke of John Rolfe
Lane, who if suffering multiple medical problems.
For many years Howard was our Beach and Marina
Chair, and has always been a helpful presence down
there.
Slow Hurricane Season
But don’t forget: you need to have a plan for your
boat. You are responsible for moving or securing
your boat. If you are out of town, someone needs to
be able to execute your plan.
I received the following note from JoAnne Liebler:
“To our Neighbors and Friends, Len loved where we
lived and for 33 years we have been blessed to be
part of this great community!! Thank you for the
flowers; however, the support and kindness given to
our family is most appreciated.”
Don’t Loan Your Jet-ski
Recently, a member loaned a guest their jet ski. The
guest was not experienced, and ended up ramming a
boat (OK, my boat!). Extensive damage to my motor
meant he had to pay to have it replaced—a $1,900
mistake. Lucky for me, he was honest and owned
up. Lucky for all of us, no one got hurt. You wouldn’t loan your car or motorcycle to someone without
a license or experience would you? Reminder: Virginia law requires anyone 45 years old and younger
to have taken a boater safety course in order to operate a jet ski.
I received the following note from Augie and Sandy
Liebler: “The Liebler family thanks you for your
kind expression of sympathy and the lovely flowers.
Lennie was loved and respected in our community
and will be missed by many.”
Long-time resident and great First Colony supporter,
Bob Hunt, fell off his bike while swerving to miss a
dog on The Maine, which had run out into the
street. He took quite a fall, as I understand, and we
all send our wishes for a very speedy recovery.
Fool’s Regatta
This year the Regatta raised over $500 for marina
improvements. We will use that money to continue
upgrades at the marina. Thank you to Craig Larson
and Family and all our participants.
I just learned that Mark Gavan, son of Bill and Mary
Gavan passed away on August 11th. The Gavans
were long-time residents, and great supporters of our
association. Mary died a few years ago, and Bill
moved away. If anyone knows his current address,
please let me know, so I can send him a card from
the association.
William & Mary Sailing
The team is back for the Fall. As always, they will
organize sailing events to which we are invited and
do marina clean up volunteer work. They have also
improved their docks. You can follow the team here

I appreciate so much when neighbors inform me of sadness or sickness in our community. Please don’t assume
that someone else will tell me. I would rather get 10 calls
than none to alert me to sickness or any other adversity.
We want those in pain to know that we care. It doesn’t
take a minute to call or send me an e-mail. Thanks to all
those who keep me informed.
Boats/Trailers Must be Functional
Please note that owners must keep their boats and
trailers functional and licensed/registered. Please
ensure your trailer tires are ready to roll. Boats/
trailers not functional will not be allowed to renew
spaces next year, per our marina rules.

WELCOMING COMMITTEE
Sylvia and Carter Davis, the new owners of 171
The Maine, have been familiar with First Colony
for many years. For the past 14 years, they have
lived in Berkeleys Green and often came through
our neighborhood when they were out walking. In
addition, their children, Julia and Jake, have been
on the swim team for the past 5 years which required the family to spend even more time
here. Things started to change after Carter's sister,
Erin Roehrle, moved to First Colony and invited the
Davis family to go to the marina with them for water activities. The Davis family loves anything to
do with water. In fact, the children are on swim
teams year round which requires Sylvia to specialize in chauffeuring as part of her homemaking
skills. Carter is supportive and proud of the children, but he has to work. He is a US Marshall. Once their view of First Colony had been
expanded, they decided that maybe they needed a
house in First Colony, too. They are pleased with
their newly remodeled house with its huge
yard. When they sit on the screened porch on the
house's top level, they are in the tree tops looking
over the back yard which extends farther than they
can see. It's blissful, too, as they no longer have to
compete or even hear the noise of their former
neighbors at Berkeleys Green doing their endless
yard work.

First Colony Memorial Garden
Attention neighbors! First Colony is home to a
very special and unique place – the memorial garden. It is located midway within the park and can
be entered from the parking lot or from Pasbehegh
Drive. This lovely area lends itself to reflection
and peaceful moments. The First Colony Garden
Club has been taking care of the garden including
weeding, watering, planting and mulching. This
past year in particular has seen a renovation in design and the addition of many new shrubs and
plants. The garden is available to all residents so,
if you have not already visited it, please do. As
always, the First Colony Garden Club welcomes
new members anytime but you do not have to be a
member to enjoy the memorial garden!
NOTES FROM THE GARDEN CLUB
First Colony Garden Club kicks off the new year
with our Wine & Cheese meeting on Monday, September 15th. Meetings are held at 7:30 p.m. at the
Clubhouse the third Monday of the month, September through May. All Greater First Colony residents are welcome as we discuss our programs and
speakers for the year, and catch up with our
neighbors.
If you are interested in gardening, please join us.
There are no requirements to know anything about
plants or landscapes, no competitions, and no
flower arrangement judging. If you would like to
attend with another member, call one of our board
members and we will be glad to meet you before
the meeting. Board members are: Suzanne Alt (607

The 9th Annual Greater First Colony Walk for Hunger
Please make a note the 9th Annual Walk for Hunger is on November 1st at 9 am.
We
will have free T-shirts available for participants on a first come, first served basis. Availability is
pending sponsorship. If interested in becoming a shirt sponsor of this long running GFCACA tradition, please contact me. Meet in the parking lot at the park a few minutes before 9 am, place your
donations in the silver Ford truck, grab a T-shirt and make the First Colony Loop with your
neighbors. As usual we gladly welcome bikes, trikes, strollers, skates, and skateboards, pets, et
al. If you are unable to participate in the walk your donation is still warmly appreciated and will be
collected via brown grocery bags like last year.
