Responding to
hunger with dignity,
hope and help
A message from Executive Director Shelley Rotondo
Thank you.
That’s what I think when
I look at this report to the
community. The numbers
point to the growth of our
work over the past five years,
and of the unprecedented
need for food caused by a
devastating and lingering
recession. The names tell
the story—but only in part
because there isn’t room
to list them all—of the
generosity of thousands
of organizations and
people such as you who
have made it possible to
rise to the challenge.
In more than 20 years of
working in hunger relief, I
have never seen this level
of need. That viewpoint is
confirmed by a recent USDA
report that shows that hunger
in Washington is at an alltime high, and growing faster
here than almost anywhere
else in the country. It is also
painfully, personally real in the
stories we hear from clients
at food banks. People who
have barely held on for four
years have exhausted their
unemployment benefits,
exhausted their savings and
exhausted their other
options. Now, they’re
just exhausted and
coming to us in greater
need than ever before.
Yet, in this season of hope,
those of us privileged to work
at Northwest Harvest are
both hopeful and thankful.
We give tremendous thanks
to the community that has
sustained us so that we
can continue to be a safety
net sustaining the people
depending on us. We’re
very aware that you have
entrusted us to be careful
stewards of your donations,
and never take that for
granted. We are proud that
93 cents of every dollar
goes directly to feeding
people. We are proud that
we are able to provide more
than 350 food programs
throughout Washington
with enough nutritious food
to equate to 1.7 million
meals every month—and
to provide a meal for only
22 cents. And we’re proud
that, with your help, we
are doing more than simply
serving food; we are offering
hope and dignity to people
who have little of either at
this time in their lives.
Giving hope and dignity has
a wonderful ripple effect. We
have seen our clients become
our volunteers, such as the
9-year-old girl who asked
her Daddy if she could help
at the food bank because
the people there had helped
her. We have seen donors
on fixed incomes give what
they can because they know
others have even less. We
have received warm notes of
thanks from you because you
feel good about the difference
you make every day.
Every gift, whether it’s time
or food or money, matters.
We appreciate each one,
and are confident that our
neighbors will continue to
lend a hand now when it is
most needed. Together, our
community will prevail in
the fight against hunger.
“This month we again had record breaking totals in both families
served and family members served. We found it difficult to
keep the shelves filled but managed to serve everyone with the
generosity of our donors.”
—Lakes Area Food Bank, Pierce County

“Dear Northwest Harvest: After taking up the food stamp challenge with my synagogue this
week, I am sending you a check for $100. We expect people to live on $31.50 a week. I tried
it and felt hungry, tired and head-achey on my diet, and I have resources to shop around for
best food prices and bulk foods. The hungry and poor do not have these options.”

“One year ago, my husband was a successful federal employee making $4,000 a month—
then he got MS. His medications run $22,000 per month. We’ve exhausted our savings and
medical plan, and my salary as an administrative assistant barely pays for a few expenses.
I’m afraid we’ll lose our house. We never thought we’d be in this position. I am so grateful
for the food, the friendly ears and the connections to other sources for help.”

“We have seen a lot more new clients. Many do not have a place to live and are staying with relatives;
others, even if they are working are still not making enough to pay bills and purchase food. The challenge
is to have enough to give to all the families and to be able to serve them 2 or 3 times a month. We do not
have any funding to purchase food, so all that we are serving is what we get from Northwest Harvest,
commodities and donations.”

“This morning an elderly woman called the food bank wanting to know if she qualified to use the
food bank’s services. She explained that she got $600 a month in social security, but her husband’s
unemployment has run out. When they ran out of food, a neighbor gave them some potatoes, so they ate
boiled potatoes for two days. They ran out of potato soup two days before calling us. The volunteer who
took the call explained how the food bank works, and that there are no qualifications for getting food. ”

Northwest Harvest Hunger Response
THREE SQUARES
Backpack Program
“Thank you
for the food,
it keeps me
healthy.”
—2nd Grader,
Pierce County
Research shows that hungry
children can’t concentrate on
learning, are sick more often and
have more behavior problems.
Yet, even with school meals and
food banks, one in four children
in our state struggles with hunger.
Northwest Harvest’s Three
Squares program provides food
to students in more than 40
high-need schools, where a high
percentage of students receive
free or reduced-price meals. A
Three Squares pack is filled with
nutritious, kid-friendly food for
children who have limited food at
home in the evenings, weekends
and during school breaks.
This past academic year
(September 2011 - June 2012),
Northwest Harvest operated
the Three Squares program
in eight school districts in
Washington, providing more
than 29,000 take-home bags
and in-school snacks to at-risk
students selected by school
coordinators for the program.
