Do Something Good!
VOL 88 NO.7 | AUGUST 2016 – 5776 S HABBAT S ERV ICES | AUGUST Do Something Good! While watching the Yankees game one summer evening, (I think it’s important to come right out and declare my sports allegiances: the New York Yankees and … wait for it… the New York Jets!), my dad and I were talking about what I was going to do after college. On and on I went spouting out ideas, proposals, and declarations. “Dad,” I exclaimed, “I want to do something big!” His almost instantaneous response, as clear now as it was over twenty years ago, still echoes in my ears and mind: “Forget about big. Do something good.” As I write my very first bulletin article as Temple Sinai’s new Senior Rabbi, I hope that is exactly what I will be able to do here. I want to do something good, and I want to do it with you, this extraordinary congregational family As I start this new journey, I am fully aware that Temple Sinai is engaged in its own ongoing adventure. Let’s not shy away from the fact that change can be uncomfortable. It can be unsettling. Indeed, it can be scary. But it can also be exhilarating. It can be valuable. It can be worthwhile. And, quite often, it can be all of these things at the same time. But change is what leads us to find the best in our selves. Marriage, children, a new home, a new career all come out of change. I hope to find new possibilities in my life by embarking on this sacred path. As the Temple Sinai family looks ahead, quite naturally, with trepidation and excitement, we need not worry that any of us will look ahead alone. I am incredibly grateful for all of the hard work, time, and effort Temple Sinai’s Rabbinic Search Committee, chaired by current Temple President, Bob Brickman, gave to the process of finding a new rabbi. Bonnie Aronson, Cary Becker, Jack Benjamin, Tracey Dodd, Gene Fendler, incoming Temple President Robin Giarrusso, Tim Gold, Sandy Levy, Hope Meyer and Joanie Tuchman were and are extremely devoted to this Temple and its future. Bob and Robin have been with me every step of the way to make my professional and our family transition that much easier. I also want to thank, in advance, our Succession and Host Committee, Robin Giarrusso, coordinated by Bob. I have no doubt that with the support of Jodi Aamodt, Jay Corenswet, Robin Giarrusso, Sheila Gold, Cliff Kern and Rob Steeg, I am in very good and able hands, and to that end, so is our congregation. Brickman rabbireimer@templesinaino.org rbrickman@cox.net T his month we begin the fifth and final book of the Torah, Deuteronomy, in Hebrew Devarim. The Israelites are on the banks of the Jordan and can see Eretz Yisrael off in the distance. Moses, who knows that he will not be entering into the Promised Land, senses the anticipation and anxiety his people feel. But, to address those feelings, Moses does not look to the future. Nor does he speak about the present. Moses turns to history and reminds the Israelites of all that has happened to them leading up this seminal moment. Moses wants the Israelites to remember what came before, and he wants to give them a vision for the future. He must help the Israelites place all they have experienced, all they expect to experience, and all they will actually experience within the framework of a story—the story of a nation. And isn’t this our story? A story that has been written and told and evolved since 1870. To that end, I feel blessed to partner with Rabbi Cohn and Cantor Colman as they share with me Temple Sinai’s sacred past and what it means to build an exciting future. But what about you? I’d like each of you to tell me your story. What does Temple Sinai mean to you and your family? What has it meant to you in the past? Where would you like to see it go? What role would you like to play in your Temple’s future? Hearing these stories, remembering and building upon the successes of our past, dreaming of the future will undoubtedly bring my father’s words to life: Let’s do something good… TOGETHER! B’Shalom, Rabbbi Matthew A. Reimer 2 AUGUST 2016 S ummer is always a chance for our Temple Sinai youth to explore and enjoy some activities other than those with their schools, which reaches what can seem like a frenetic pace through the academic year. Our congregant families have so many choices including local camps (both Jewish and others), family summer travel, Henry S. Jacobs (Jacobs) camp and other “sleep away” camps. I can tell you that in my own family, with three campers, we had three different styles of camps! I really enjoy speaking with our congregant families about the options they have considered and pursued during their summer. It is a diverse array and I think we are fortunate in New Orleans that each child has so many choices that fit the particular interest of our children. As a temple we respect all of these choices and will look forward to hearing what our children have been up to this summer. Temple Sinai continues to have a special relationship with Jacobs camp and the participation of our students that go to Jacobs Camp has been strong. Our Educator Ann Kientz, and Cantor Joel Colman spent several weeks at Jacobs Camp during the second session of camp in July and visited during the first session. Rabbi Reimer, during his first week at Temple Sinai, went with Rabbi Cohn on a special trip to say hello to our campers and get his first introduction to Jacobs camp. I appreciate his visit during a particularly hectic time of personal transition to New Orleans. You should know that our Temple, through its “Camp Fund”, has committed to a significant number of scholarships for our campers with financial need to supplement funding of Jacobs Camp tuition, at increased levels over the last two years. These scholarships have been funded by our congregation members through donations, in addition to their ongoing financial commitments to the Temple’s operations. We are all so thankful for this generosity. Another thank you to Michael Kirschman, chairman of our Religious School committee, who has revived this committee over the past year supervising and working closely with Ann on parent and teacher surveys, input to the operations and budget of the Religious and Hebrew schools, and continued work to enhance the experience of the schools. As we move to the opening day of Religious School, the impact of this collaborative work will be coming forth. Rabbi Reimer, as our new Senior Rabbi, will also be an important part of the input to our program. Thank you to all of our Religious School and Hebrew School families for supporting our students and our programs. As always, we welcome your suggestions, and you may contact Ann, Michael or myself with any observations. We look forward to an exciting fall and programming year with Rabbi Reimer in place, supported by Rabbi Cohn, Cantor Colman and our entire Temple Sinai staff! B’shalom, Bob Brickman TEMPLE SINAI FROM THE TEMPLE EDUCATOR SISTERHOOD CO-PRESIDENTS’ MESSAGE Ann Zivitz Kientz Doris Baron & Leslie Kastl annzkientz@gmail.com djbaron73@aol.com leslie1@a2zmd.com August Education Update Notes from Sisterhood O ur summer has flown by much too fast as usual. However, so many wonderful things happened and the planning for the coming year is right on track! Our pilot program for FREE summer Hebrew classes for the class of 2016-17 Bar/Bat Mitzvah students was a stellar success. Thirteen of our 18 students who have a Bar/Bat Mitzvah scheduled between August and May participated! It was not only a wonderful opportunity to continue learning and polishing skills, but also an opportunity for me to really get to know them on a much more personal level. Jacobs Camp was another spectacularly fun Jewish experience this summer for 31 of our students who were campers, plus three staff members and two of our teens participating in the NFTY Israel trip. Cantor Colman, Rabbi Cohn, Rabbi Reimer and I all loved sharing great times with Temple Sinai Campers. If you have not yet registered your child for Religious and Hebrew Schools, you can find the link in my parent email and also on our Temple Sinai website page under Education/Religious School. If you have a child who is Pre-K age – 10th grade, our Temple Sinai Religious School on Sunday mornings from 9:00-11:30 is a wonderful way to learn the Jewish religion, culture, heritage, traditions and ethics and to connect to Jewish youth. Our staff is made up of incredibly well rounded Jewish leaders, thinkers and doers who are exactly the type of role models that our children need. Also, if your child is in the 3rd or 4th grade it is time to begin Hebrew School on Wednesdays from 4:00-5:30 pm. The students arrive between 3:30-3:45 pm and enjoy a bit of down time and a filling after school snack before we begin the learning. Our first year students learn how to read Hebrew and a few basic blessings, our 2nd year students learn the prayers of Friday night and our 3rd – 5th year students learn the prayers of Saturday morning as well as the Torah service and concluding prayers. This foundation prepares them not only to become a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, but also to be able to participate fully as a congregant in Shabbat services anywhere they go. Please register by August 15th so we can be ready for your child. If you have any questions about the schools, please don’t hesitate to contact me anytime: AnnZKientz@gmail.com. The first day of Religious School is Sunday, September 11th and the first day of Hebrew School is Wednesday, September 14th. I can’t wait to see “all y’all” back home at Temple Sinai. TEMPLE SINAI W e are proud and excited to be our Sisterhood’s co-presidents. Leslie hails from Alexandria, Louisiana, where she was an active member of Congregation Gemiluth Chassodim. She served as Sisterhood President several different times and also served as the Religious School Director. She also served on the Temple’s Board of Directors. Doris is from Monroe, Louisiana, grew up in Temple B’Nai Israel, and has been a member of Temple Sinai in New Orleans since 1969. At Sinai she taught in the Religious School, was Co-Advisor of Sinai’s Temple Youth Group, and has been an active Sisterhood member during the past 45 years. We are scheduling our 2016-17 Sisterhood meetings and programs for the year, and you will hear more about these as the year progresses. Preparation for the Attic Sale is well under way at the time of this Bulletin’s publication. Many thanks to all of you who donated items for Sale as well as to those who gave of their time and volunteered to work. A special “shout out” goes to Genie Dyer for taking this project on as the manager. On behalf of the Sisterhood of Temple Sinai, we extend a warm welcome to Rabbi Reimer and his family. We look forward to many years of working together. The first Sisterhood meeting of the year will be held on Sunday, September 11 at 9:00 a.m. in the Goldring Pavilion. Sisterhood is looking forward to a busy and productive year which will provide Temple Sinai with constructive and entertaining programming. – Doris & Leslie Your Clergy Wants to Know...
